GameTap drives in its first update of the new year with the addition of GRID. Fans of Codemaster's DiRT might find it worth their time to check out the high-speed arcade style races found in GRID. GRID (Windows) - There's something magical about playing this game while sitting in a cardboard box with the top open. We also recommend turning off the TV sound and making your own car noises. Magic Academy (Windows) - It's a hidden object game. The digital version of a Where's Waldo book. This week, GameTap adds Just Cause to the free games list. Why? You know, just 'cause. Ouch! We sprained a finger forcing that joke through. Check out the full gratis list after the break.

Fans of the adventure genre should rejoice as GameTap adds 2002's Syberia to its subscription lineup this week. The story follows Kate Walker, a lawyer sent to finalize the takeover of a family-owned French toy factory, who discovers that the owner has died and sets off to find the heir to the company. A fantastical journey follows etc. Syberia (Windows) - Adventure fans should make sure to play this game. Zombie Shooter (Windows) - Kill, kill, kill, the zombie threat. This week, GameTap adds Total Overdose, an over-the-top action romp, to the free games list. Grimm's A Christmas Carol episode continues to be free to play until New Year's Eve. The full gratis list is after the break.

    12.23.2008

This week's additions to GameTap aren't all that exciting, but if you didn't take the opportunity back in October, now's your chance to play Overlord one week for free. The game's minions may be a little glitchy and frustrating at times -- but for free, it's worth a test drive. Stronghold Crusader Extreme (Windows) - Like Stronghold Crusader, but extreme! Al Emmo and the Lost Dutchman's Mine (Windows) - An adventure game where the protagonist reminds us of Leisure Suit Larry. The game's description notes Al is a 42-year-old who lives with his parents and travels to "dusty Anozira out west to pick up his mail order bride, Ivanna." Check out the full free games list after the break. Remember that last week's A Christmas Carol episode of Grimm is free to play until New Year's Eve.

    12.18.2008

Grimm's second volume ends this week with the negative gnome's (dwarf?) take on A Christmas Carol. The good news is that, instead of the standard 24 hours of free play, the latest episode will be available to freeloaders from now until New Year's Eve. Grimm: A Christmas Carol (Windows) - Scrooge vs. Grimm: FIGHT! Warhammer 40K: Dawn of War: Gold (Windows) - The original Dawn of War, plus the (arguably) superior Winter Assault expansion. RTS fans owe it to themselves to play this. GameTap adds King of Fighters 2003 to the free games list for one week. Check out the full gratis rundown after the break.

Even more Grimm this week, as the second volume gets ready to wrap up on December 18. We've also got tasty pastries and an open world, alternate-future shooter. Grimm: The Pied Piper (Windows) - Something tells the music won't be as innocently alluring. Digby's Donuts (Windows) - Mmmm, donuts. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Shadow of Chernobyl (Windows) - Fun for the whole nuclear family! Okay, not really, but it is quite fun. For the freebies this week, we've got Tomb Raider Anniversary -- but only for this week. A friendly reminder, Grimm is free to play for the first 24 hours of release. Full list of free games after the break.

    11.25.2008

GameTap will be updating with Painkiller and a new episode of Grimm today, due to the annual "gobble day" falling on this Thursday. Instead of the normal 24-hour grace period for freeloaders, the new episode of Grimm will be available to non-subscribers through Thanksgiving. Grimm: The Golden Goose (Windows) - This goose lays golden eggs and everyone lives horribly ever after. Mo' money, mo' problems. Painkiller (Windows) - An FPS that's filled to the brim with pew-pew pew-pew-pew and ka-booooom. GameTap adds Fallout and Hitman: Blood Money to the gratis games roster this week. The full list of free-to-play titles is hiding from the apocalypse after the break.

    11.20.2008

The tales of Grimm continue this week on GameTap with Cinderella. Subscribers of the service also have a chance to get their mad scientist on, destroying everything in their path for points, in Elements of Destruction. Grimm: Cinderella (Windows) - We doubt there will be singing mice. If there are, they'll probably die in some gruesome way. Lionheart (Windows) - An action-RPG from 2003 that uses Fallout's SPECIAL system, coupled with Diablo-esque hack n' slash. Elements of Destruction (Window) - Be a mad scientist who likes to destroy cities. In the end, it's a little cathartic. No new free games this week and next week's update will occur on Tuesday, due to the Thanksgiving holiday. The full list of current free-to-play titles can be found after the break.

    11.13.2008

GameTap keeps the Grimm episodes rolling, farting, and stomping along this week with King Midas. As with all Grimm titles, the latest episode is available to non-subscribers for free during the first 24 hours after release. Grimm: King Midas (Windows) - Grimm goes after the man with the golden touch. Not to be confused with the man with the golden gun. That's Bond. Space Hack (Windows) - A sci-fi RPG with "Diablo-inspired gameplay mechanics." No new games on the free titles list this week. Don't worry, there are still 143 "no money required" games available, and the full list can be found after the break.

    11.06.2008

Grimm's second volume continues on GameTap this week with The Singing Bone. The site also adds THQ's Earth-bound FPS Red Faction II, created by Volition, developers of the Saints Row franchise. Grimm: The Singing Bone (Windows) - The game is available to non-Gametap subscribers for the first 24 hours after release. Red Faction II (Windows) - Sorry, Mars. The red planet just wasn't cool enough for the sequel. This Earth-based FPS totally missed the boat by not calling itself Blue Faction. Just ignore the historical basis for the series' name and the color change would have been fine. The current list of 143 free games can be found after the break. Sorry, no new additions this week.

    10.30.2008

Grimm, GameTap's original series, returns this week with The Master Thief. Volume 2 will have eight new episodes leading up to Christmas, with the last one being the series' take on A Christmas Carol. Subscribers can play Grimm at any time, but freeloaders can check out The Master Thief for the next 48 hours. Grimm: The Master Thief (Windows) - American McGee's Katamari-esque, fractured fairy tale returns. Fallout Tactics: Brotherhood of Steel (Windows) - A tactical RPG, set in the Fallout universe, following the Brotherhood of Steel. The game is briefly mentioned in GameTrailers' Fallout retrospective. There are no new additions to the gratis games catalog this week. The current list of 144 can still be found after the break.

    10.23.2008

GameTap brings the goods this week with the addition of Supreme Commander and its expansion Forged Alliance. There's also an extra evil treat for the freeloaders out there. Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance (Windows) - The well received RTS by Gas Powered Games in one package. Die By The Sword (Windows) - Treyarch's sword fighting game from a decade ago. World Poker Championship 2 (Windows) - That title couldn't be any more descriptive. This week temporarily adds Overlord to GameTap's free-to-play titles for one week. Give it a spin, there's definitely a "love it or hate it" division about the title. The service also adds Penumbra Overture for the foreseeable future to the gratis list, which can be found after the break.

    10.16.2008

This week's new GameTap titles bring us a little gem from 2000 and an adventure game that totally flew under the radar earlier this year. Jack Keane (Windows) - A cartoony and light-hearted adventure game. Sacrifice (Windows) - The critically acclaimed RTS with RPG elements, made by Shiny Entertainment back in 2000, deserves a test drive. This week temporarily adds Hitman: Contracts to GameTap's free-to-play titles. We have also received the release schedule for volume two of Grimm, which can be found along with the list of gratis games after the break.

It's a decent enough week for GameTap as Sam Fisher sneaks in and explains chaos theory through action. Also, Lady Croft gives it away for free. Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory (Windows) - Pre-emo Sam Fisher is out to save the world in this third installment in the stealth-action series. Ocean Express (Windows) - Sounds intriguing, right? Well, it's a Tetris hybrid clone. This week sees the addition of Tomb Raider: Anniversary as a free-to-play title for one week. The full list of gratis titles can be found after the break.

    10.02.2008

We really don't want to focus on the new GameTap titles this week, so let's look at the good stuff that's recently been added. The first season of American McGee's Grimm is done, with new installments coming soon. Don't forget to check out Fallout 2 (the first Fallout is free to play) before the third installment nukes us later this month. But If you must know this week's additions: Dancing With the Stars (Windows) - The top-rated show infects your PC. Ride! Carnival Tycoon (Windows) - Another sub-par tycoon game. Secrets of Great Art (Windows) - Where's Waldo and I Spy meet high art. The one saving grace this week is Sacred Gold hitting the free games lineup. The full list can be found after the break.

Whatever, it's your choice. The full list of free-to-play titles can be found after the break.

  • GameTap creates European 'partnership' with Metaboli

    09.24.2008

Turner Broadcasting's GameTap service will be "partnering" up with Europe's Metaboli to create an amalgamation of the two companies. The GameTap service will continue as usual in the US, but Metaboli will take "direct management" of the business and brand in early 2009. Turner will become an equity investor in the group going forward, meaning the company kind of got sold. We've contacted GameTap to clarify several points, most of which the company doesn't seem to be prepared to answer at this time. There's no real clear answer what this all means to gamers both in the States and Europe, just that the two companies will apparently work out what they'll become over the next few months.Update: We did hear back from a Turner representative that "contrary to what some are writing this is a true partnership with Turner majorly invested despite the fact that Metaboli will be taking over operations at some point in 2009."[Via GameDaily; Thanks Matt]

    09.18.2008

It's a tale as old as time, a song as old as rhyme: Beauty and the Beast. Well, maybe not this time. American McGee's Grimm puts its own special twist on the fairy tale in this week's GameTap update. Grimm: Beauty and the Beast (Windows) - Remember, it's free to non-subscribers for the first 24 hours after release. Mission: Runway (Windows) - Like Project Runway, but without any of the entertaining elements. Worst of all: No Heidi Klum. We're sure those of you who read this post every week have come to notice the "no new titles" pattern to GameTap's free games list ... this week isn't any different. The stagnant list of free-to-play titles can be found after the break .

    09.11.2008

GameTap adds a pair of dark tales this week for subscribers. American McGee's Grimm keeps "improving" childhood classics with the addition of The Devil and His Three Golden Hairs (remember, it's free to everyone for the first 24 hours). Also, the dynamic duo of Kane & Lynch get all violent up in the joint. Grimm: The Devil and His Three Golden Hairs (Windows) - Much like Harry Potter, it just keeps getting darker. Kane & Lynch: Dead Men (Windows) - You think we're going to put some Gerstmann-gate crack in here, don't you? Well, we're not! We aren't going to mention it at all. Once again, there aren't any additions to GameTap's free games list this week. The full list of free-to-play titles can be found after the break.

American McGee's Grimm continues on GameTap this week with The Girl Without Hands -- yup, it's getting darker. Same as every week, the episode is free to non-subscribers for the first 24 hours after release. The service also gets into the drug trade by adding the addictive Puzzle Quest. Grimm: The Girl Without Hands (Windows) - Katamari Grimm-acy do your thing! Puzzle Quest: Challenge of Warlords (Windows) - It's time to finally play this game if you've somehow missed out on it. There aren't any additions to GameTap's gratis games lineup this week, but the full list of free-to-play titles can be found after the break.

This week American McGee's Grimm retells the story (in Grimm's special way) of the anthropomorphic Puss in Boots. The episode is free for everyone the first 24 hours after release and will be available only to GameTap subscribers after that time. Grimm: Puss In Boots (Windows) - Cats are evil and Puss is no exception. Dogs rule! Patrician III (Windows) - How to describe ... how to describe? Oh, it's like playing "Medieval Tycoon." There are no new additions to GameTap's free games lineup this week. As always, though, the full list of free-to-play titles can be found after the break.
