MSI is also upgrading its gaming laptops with Intel's new CPUs
MSI is joining a slew of other hardware makers in refreshing its gaming laptops with 9th-gen Core CPUs. It says these processors will allow its machines to deliver up to 45 percent better performance than previous versions.
Lenovo's latest gaming laptops pack 9th-gen Intel Core CPUs
Lenovo has announced two new gaming laptops, while it has refreshed some models in its Legion lineup -- all of which work with 9th-gen Intel Core i7 processors. The IdeaPad L340 Gaming laptop is a little more budget-friendly than other portable Lenovo gaming machines. It has blue lighting and options to switch between Gaming and Quiet modes. It's compatible with NVIDIA's new GeForce GTX 1650 GPU and features Dolby Audio, while Intel Optane memory is available as an option. The L340 will be available late May, starting at $870 for the 15-inch model and $920 for its 17-inch sibling.
Razer is selling a pink gaming laptop in time for Valentine's Day
Picture the scene: it's time to do some work on your fancy gaming laptop, so you decide to hustle to your local coffee shop for a change of environment. Once you've picked up your java and found the ideal spot, you take out your computer. If it's the latest version of Razer's Blade Stealth 13, people around you may think to themselves, "Wait, is that laptop pink? Wow." You'll smugly sit down and bask in the adulation. Or, at the very least, you and your machine should stand out amid a sea of grey and black laptops.
Alienware will beat HP to sell the first laptop with a 240Hz display
Earlier this week, HP said it would be the first to release a laptop with a 240 Hz display, but according to Dell, that's not quite the case. The company has announced that its Alienware m15 lightweight gaming laptop will also have a 240 Hz display and will arrive in March, ahead of the July date that HP promised. It will also have a refresh rate below 1 millisecond, all of which should make for pretty incredible gaming performance.
Dell's XPS 13 is its first laptop with Dolby Vision
As it does nearly every CES, Dell has unveiled its latest, revamped XPS 13 laptops. Last year's models were already solid, but there are a few welcome changes. The webcam has been redesigned and is now on the top again, so you'll no longer look like Boris Karloff on Skype calls. Dell managed to shrink the bezels to 4mm and fit it into the size of an 11-inch laptop, despite the 13.3-inch display. And one of the screen options is a full HDR 4K Ultra HD version (3,840 x 2,160) that supports Dolby Vision -- the first for a Dell laptop -- which pumps out 400 nits of brightness.
HP's Omen 15 is the first gaming laptop with a 240Hz display
HP has just upped the refresh rate ante with its latest Omen 15. The company says it's the world's first gaming laptop with a 15.6-inch 1080p 240Hz IPS display, meaning it should stay ahead of even the quickest-shooting gamer. The laptop itself should also be able to keep up with the screen, as it's equipped with NVIDIA's all-new RTX 2070 Max-Q GPU, an 8th-generation Intel Core i7-8750H processor, 16GB of RAM and the latest 802.11ax wireless, aka "WiFi 6."
Lenovo gives its Legion gaming laptop line a tasteful makeover
If I asked you to imagine a gaming laptop, flashy designs, colorful lights and beefy chasses probably come to mind. Lenovo wants to move away from that motif and appeal to more users by redesigning its Legion series of gaming systems. For E3 this year, the company is introducing the new Y530, Y730 (in two sizes) and Y7000 laptops, which feature a subtler aesthetic, among other updates. It's also adding four new desktops to its lineup -- the T530 and T730 towers and the cubic C530 and C730.
Gigabyte Aero 15X review: The best lightweight gaming laptop yet
NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang flaunted a Gigabyte Aero 15X at CES as to show how Max-Q tech can make laptops both light and powerful. With the updated 2018 Aero 15X, Gigabyte has shown it's not just about the graphics. It features an all-new eighth-generation Intel 6-core CPU and with a new 144Hz display, addresses the last model's biggest shortfall for gamers. At the same time, it retains the clever design, NVIDIA GTX 1070 Max-Q graphics and huge battery, making the Aero 15X the best lightweight gaming laptop you can buy. That said, there are a host of similar laptops coming soon, so Gigabyte might not retain its crown for long.
Samsung's latest gaming laptop has a 6-core i7 processor too
The Samsung Odyssey Z -- not to be confused with the Magnavox Odyssey or Samsung's VR headset -- is the electronics juggernaut's latest gaming laptop. Once you open the lid, you'll see just how far that design ethos goes. The keyboard has been pushed to the lowest portion of the tray, and in between that and the 1080p display is what Samsung calls the Z AeroFlow Cooling System. Here's how the company describes it:
ASUS’ Zephyrus M is a thin gaming laptop with a six-core i7
Today, ASUS Republic of Gamers (ROG) announced the Zephyrus M laptop, which is the thinnest gaming laptop to have an eighth generation Intel Core i7 processor and NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 graphics. The laptop will be available for preorder starting April 3rd. The laptop starts at $1499, with the top-of-the-line model at $2199.
Origin's EVO15-S packs a lot of gaming power into a 4.3-pound laptop
With Intel's release of new Core-i7 and i9 chips for portable PCs, a lot of interesting new lightweight gaming laptops are hitting the market. Origin, for one, just launched the EVO15-S and business-oriented NT-15 laptops that fit pretty incredible specs into a small size. They both pack NVIDIA GTX 1070 Max-Q graphics, up to 32GB of RAM, and Intel's six-core i7-8750H processor into a 4.3 pound, one-inch thick package, which should please gamers and video editors alike.
Razer's Blade Pro gaming laptop can now be had for $1,700 less
When Razer redesigned its Blade Pro laptop late last year, it finally had a flagship notebook that lived up to its name. The 17-inch Blade Pro had a gorgeous 4K display, a screaming fast processor, top of the line NVIDIA graphics and even somehow managed to fit a mechanical keyboard in a laptop chassis. The only problem was that it cost almost $4,000. Now, Razer is offering another option: a pared-down version of the Blade Pro that costs almost half as much.
ASUS' new ROG Strix gaming laptop is built for FPS players
ASUS' IFA welcome mat is scattered with laptops, and it's not just more slender ZenBooks. The company's gaming arm, ROG, has recast its Strix gaming laptop in two different editions, each dedicated to a different type of game. First up, the SCAR edition, which was built for first-person shooter gamers "looking for a competitive edge". That edge involves the newest eighth-generation Intel Core i7 processors, and NVIDIA's GeForce GTX 10 in the way of graphical might. You'll be staring into either a 15-inch or 17-inch screen, with a 5ms response time and smooth 120Hz refresh rates. ROG says this will eliminate motion blur, while also contradicting itself and teasing an even smoother 144Hz, 7ms display option also in the works.
Acer’s Nitro 5 is a flashy but forgettable gaming laptop
Acer's Nitro 5 is the company's attempt to reach out to those folks who don't game often but still want to have fun once in a while. The result is a laptop with a variety of middle-of-the-road configurations that you can take all the way up to a Core i7 CPU and NVIDIA's GeForce 1050 Ti. In addition, you can throw in as much as 32GB of RAM. Prices start at $799 when it launches in July.
Acer's new Predator gaming laptop trades power for portability
What's the point of getting a powerful laptop if you can't drag it to a gaming party? Acer's latest back-to-school update for its Predator series of laptops, the Triton 700, may actually be portable enough for those trips. It packs the latest NVIDIA graphics chips and an advanced dual-fan cooling system into a chassis that's just 18.9mm (or 0.75 inches) tall. Acer hasn't shared many other details about the notebook yet, except to say that it will be ready for the back-to-school season this summer. In addition to size, the overall weight impacts portability, so we'll have to withhold any final assessment until we learn that crucial detail.
The new Razer Blade Pro trades gimmicks for 4K gaming power
When Razer made its first laptop, it was a company best known for selling third-party gamepads and high-performance gaming mice. Premium gimmicks were the name of the game. The company routinely released products with 17 buttons, adjustable tension analog sticks or retractable parts. This flair for novelty carried over to Razer's first gaming notebook, which featured a set of 10 customizable keyboard buttons that each housed its own tiny LED display. It was neat, but the flagship laptop was soon overshadowed by a smaller, more powerful model. Now, the company is finally giving its original notebook the upgrades it deserves: a screaming new processor, the latest in graphics technology and a keyboard without the hindrance of the original's silly "Switchblade" interface. This is the new Razer Blade Pro.
ASUS' ROG Strix GL502VS is a mid-range (and VR-ready) gaming laptop
The idea of a "gaming laptop" usually brings to mind one of two images: an oversize laptop with enough power to rival a desktop machine, or a shockingly thin (and expensive) notebook that punches above its weight. Somewhere in between you'll find 15-inch systems like the ASUS ROG Strix GL502VS, a gaming laptop small and light enough to lug around, yet thick enough to house the sort of powerful internals you'd need to play just about any game you want. Though it's not a premium machine by any means, the Strix strikes a nice balance between power and portability.
ASUS upgrades its crazy ROG liquid-cooled gaming laptop
ROG, ASUS' well-respected gaming PC arm, likes to unveil a barrage of weird systems at Taipei's Computex -- and this year is no different. To start with, its insane liquid-cooled GX700 gaming laptop is coming back for another round. The GX800 still has the giant attachment at the rear, but will now be powered by an NVIDIA SLI GPU, along with Intel's K-series CPU. There are two 330W power supplies to ensure all that liquid-cooled overclocking you'll be doing. Indeed, if you're not planning to overclock, you're probably looking at the wrong gaming machine.
Razer's Blade Stealth gaming ultraportable is all work and no play
At some point, every laptop-owning PC gamer asks the question, "Can I hook a desktop graphics card up to my notebook?" Until recently, the answer was no, but times are changing. In the past year Alienware, MSI and ASUS have all announced laptops with external GPU accessories, promising a workhorse on the go and a gaming behemoth at home. Razer's take on this trend took CES by storm, running away from the electronics show with Best of CES awards for both People's Choice and Best PC. And why not? The Razer Blade Stealth is sleek with impressive specs and has a strong pedigree. Still, there's a problem: This ultraportable laptop ships without the GPU dock it needs to actually play games. Whoops.
