Heroes & Generals' latest update is codenamed "Rommel," which seems rather appropriate given the new general characters and officer rank overhaul. "The Rommel update is an important update, as it wraps up our vision with the character progression tree," explains Reto-Moto game director Jacob Andersen. "So you may start your career as a foot soldier and work your way up to become an officer and finally a general in order to command armies and wage war resources." Rommel also adds FG 42 and M1 carbines for paratroopers, new win conditions for wars, a "much larger" campaign map, improved tank handling, and more. Reto-Moto's press release says that Heroes & Generals now has more than 2.6 million registered players. Don't forget to view the seven-minute Rommel dev vlog after the break.

Wargaming.net is adding a new title to its free-to-play arsenal. World of Tanks Generals will soon raise its flag alongside the worlds of tanks, warplanes, and warships. The F2P, browser-based game will combine real-time strategy and collectible card gameplay to allow players to slip into the roles of nations in World War II. Tanks, artillery, and infantry will all be brought to bear alongside technology research and unit upgrades for strategic gameplay. The game will comprise several single- and multiplayer modes that will take players through historical events. The game will launch with the US, U.S.S.R, France, and Germany as playable nations, and will also be made into a card-based board game. [Source: Wargaming press release]

  • The Firing Line: Hands-on with Heroes & Generals

During the first 10 minutes of my time with Heroes & Generals, I killed once, died twice, and drove a tank, a jeep, a half-track, and a bicycle (not necessarily in that order). I also rode shotgun on said tank and said jeep, manning a nifty vehicle-mounted machine gun in the process. I marveled at the visuals, took way too many screenshots of my squadmates looking at the blow-away badass in-game map (it's the little things, amirite?), and generally had a helluva good time. Did I mention that all of this happened in a browser?
