  • The Daily Grind: How do you keep track of your passwords?

It's a hazard of the job that we accumulate scores of passwords while writing at Massively. It makes sense: Every new MMO tried means a new account, and because I'm not stupid, a new password. Unfortunately, the numbers began to pile up on me and I began to realize that there was no way I was going to remember all of these for when I'd go back to a game months after the fact. My old system used a common theme (say, names of Pokemon) that allowed for different passwords while giving me a chance at guessing them if I forgot. My new system is a $0.99 notebook that I desperately hope my kids don't discover and chew up. It's a slight improvement but not perfect. So I'm curious: How do you keep track of your passwords? Do you memorize them, write them down in a notebook, have a text file on your computer, or use a password manager program? Every morning, the Massively bloggers probe the minds of their readers with deep, thought-provoking questions about that most serious of topics: massively online gaming. We crave your opinions, so grab your caffeinated beverage of choice and chime in on today's Daily Grind!

  • If there was a GI Joe MMO, this is what it would look like

I am in love with the Champions Online character creator. I may not have a character past level 8 in the open beta, but I'm already wishing I had more character slots. I guess it's a good thing we can save our costumes! With the recent GI Joe movie hype, and the simple fact that I'm a ginormous GI Joe fanboy since I was probably 6 or 7, I decided it might be fun to see how close I could get on recreating GI Joe characters from my youth in Champions Online. We've paid homage to this amazing character creator before, but we just can't get enough! Follow along after the jump (warning, large pictures ahead!) to see if you can name the five characters I created. This is not an official competition, and the only thing you'll win is my respect and love. Isn't that totally worth it?

Joe: Rise of Cobra related content is planned to invade the Home cinema, along with a G.I. Joe Training Game where players have the chance to win in-world loot for their expert marksmanship. Finally, the cast and crew get involved in the promotional onslaught with an exclusive welcome message video from sexy rivals Sienna Miller and Rachel Nichols, and a trailer introduction from director Stephen Sommers. Whether anyone apologizes for the upcoming action flick is unclear.

We had just grown accustomed to laying off gratuitous use of our dreadful "layoffs" tag, but alas, an unhappy economy continues to produce unhappy stories such as this one. In a move first reported by VentureBeat, Foundation 9 Entertainment has announced several cost-cutting measures to its employees. The company is currently working on various versions of G.I. Joe (pictured), Where the Wild Things Are and the PSP entry in the Assassin's Creed franchise. The group's Austin, Texas-based Fizz Factor studio will be closed, while the Amaze and Griptonite teams (both based in Kirkland) will be merged under the leadership of the latter's studio head, J.C. Connors. According to a statement released by Foundation 9, "Having separate 'console' and 'handheld' studios under the same roof simply didn't make sense in light of the convergence in capabilities of modern game hardware!" Exclamation point.Foundation 9 will also be implementing cutbacks at Double Helix, the Californian studio responsible for Konami's Xbox 360 and PS3 stab at survival-horror, Silent Hill Homecoming.

Reader Amanda S sent us this picture of a Draenei Barbie (that is a Draenei, right? Not a Night Elf? Oh yeah -- check the hooves) she says she and a friend made when they were bored. It's not the most involved craft we've ever seen, but it looks pretty good and it's an interesting idea: make Warcraft characters out of existing dolls, rather than completely from scratch. GI Joe would probably be perfect for putting together a figure of the new King Wrynn. But we do like the dress and the shoulders -- nice job. Whenever Blizzard figures out how to do player housing, we can put her in a dream house as well.Got a WoW-related craft that you'd like to share? We'd love to see it -- send us a tip through the tipline and we'll check it out.

    GDC09: G.I. Joe impressions

    by

click to enlarge It's always troubling when you're not allowed to actually play a game due out within a couple months. Such was the case with our GDC demo of EA's G.I. Joe: the Game. Sure, we could pretty much gather everything we needed to know about the canonical sequel to the film (yep, we guess COBRA isn't defeated) from watching two people play it, but, c'mon. So, here's what we saw while being fed dozens of bullet points. Two Joes (out of a total 12) run forward through (in this case) desert and snow-covered environments. The play mechanics actually weren't as brutally simple as we'd expected -- there's a melee attack and charged melee attack that add to the "fire" button. Players can strafe, concentrating fire on the same enemy as your partner kills them faster (oh really?) ... and it looks like an up-rezzed PS2 or Xbox game. Still, there were bits that should please G.I. Joe diehards -- but those couldn't get us over the fact that this isn't a PSN/XBLA title and is, in fact, a (likely much more expensive) retail release on PS3 and Xbox 360. (It's coming out for everything, by the way.)%Gallery-47599%

Yo, check out new G.I. Joe screens

click to enlarge thisss ssshot! G.I. Joe fights for freedom wherever there's trouble -- and, evidently, there's some to be found in the sparsely populated settings of EA's upcoming movie tie-in game. Snake Eyes features prominently in this first batch of screens from G.I. Joe: The Game, most likely because, as in the movie's trailer, he's the one character that actually looks remotely like he's from ... G.I. Joe (and not someone who raided the X-Men films' wardrobe storage).Looking at these screens is only half the battle. The other half is reading our first impressions of the game in action. Your reward for victory: a trip back in time with Konami's equally deep 1992 arcade game.%Gallery-47599%

  • Yo Joe? More like: Oh no, G.I. Joe game impressions

    James Ransom-Wiley

EA is talking up its first G.I. Joe game, a movie spin-off, as "cross-generational." It's so easy to control that even "mom" can play. Which means, moms -- if you're reading -- not only will you be subjected to chaperoning a mission to the local theater to suffer through the G.I. Joe film adaptation this summer, you also may be expected to idle away your weekends with the game. Let's hope it's a short one.G.I. Joe: The Game plays as any generic third-person shooter, with the bonus of the aforementioned base layer Mom Controls®. Literally, all that is needed to proceed is the left thumb steering the on-screen character and the right index finger, locked down on the designated shooting button -- just keep on holding it and the game will automatically target a new enemy once the current one has absorbed too many laser blasts and disappears into the well known in-game ether. Of course, "hardcore" gamers will find melee and character-exclusive secondary attacks, along with a rolling dodge and cover mechanic mapped to their controllers.EA is throwing out some big-name inspirations for its game: Contra, Ikari Warriors and Ikaruga. We suppose you could consider G.I. Joe as a like-designed title in so far as it is built as an "arcade" throwback, with high scores being the ultimate reward. Actually, the ultimate reward is unlocking all twelve playable characters -- unlocking characters requires score points, though. Scoring is linked directly to difficulty setting and one's play. Dying, for example, decreases one's overall score, but, on the lowest difficulty setting, will not produce further setbacks. Think of this as a "no fail" setting -- you know, the one mom can play.

  • EA to launch G.I. Joe game alongside movie

We've known for a year now that EA has had the rights to toy favorites G.I. Joe, so perhaps we shouldn't be surprised that they'll be rolling out their take on the license alongside this summer's tent pole film, G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra. EA's not talking gameplay at this point but we know (1) you'll get control of 12 different Joes (2) single-screen co-op and (3) it's basically coming to every platform. The game's story will apparently pick up at the end of the movie's (it's going to have a story?) and allow you to "re-create and re-live the greatest moments from the film, cartoon series and action figure toy line". From that last bit, we can only assume there's going to be a level where the Joes dry hump giant Barbie dolls and get their faces melted after lying under skyscraper-sized radiators.

  • LucasArts and BioWare confirm impending announcement

    by

LucasArts and BioWare have invited members of the press to attend an event later this month at which the two companies will finally officially announce the game they've been working on together. They did not say what the game is, of course -- then how could they officially announce it at the event? Obviously we're suspicious that it will be the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic MMO (or just Star Wars: The Old Republic, as the rumored title goes).EA's John Riccitiello already confirmed the existence of that game under the table way back at E3, and other tidbits of news have only supported it since then. But hey, we suppose it could be something else. It was suggested in the Massively offices that maybe LucasArts bought the rights to He-Man, and it is in fact a He-Man MMO. Or maybe GI Joe. Yeah, we're a-stretchin'. More likely: a Willow game.According to Worlds in Motion, the invitation says it's "the game that's been rumored about for years." Uh-huh. The announcement will come October 21st, so hold your horses. Or your speeders. Whatever.

When we first caught wind of the games made possible by EA's newly inked deal with Hasbro, well ... at first we cringed at the thought of Monopoly over EA's POGO service (some games will make you more violent), then we wondered aloud where the G.I. Joe announcement was. With a live-action movie debuting next year, the opportunity to exploit our nostalgia could just as easily take a two-pronged offensive with the release of a game based on the license. But, alas, there was no mention in their announcement ...Hollywood trade pub Variety reports "Numerous sources said that EA will release a game in conjunction with Paramount's 2009 summer tentpole" and that an "EA rep confirmed that the publisher has interactive rights to G.I. Joe as part of its overall deal with Hasbro, but declined to comment on any specific game plans." [Update: An EA spokesperson just confirmed with Joystiq that their "agreement with Hasbro does include the digital rights to GI Joe."Well, now we know ...[image credit]

Korean actor Byun-hung Lee, whose likeness was used for the protagonist Wayne Holden in Capcom's Lost Planet: Extreme Condition, has been casted in the upcoming G.I. Joe film to play Storm Shadow, according to the official Capcom blog. The film is expected for release in 2009.On a related note, has anyone ever noticed the alternate text when highlighting your mouse over Capcom blog links? We particularly laughed at the text for the link related to the G.I. Joe movie: "Directed by the guy who directed Van Helsing? Danger!" We laughed. The screenplay for G.I. Joe was written by Stuart Beattie, who is penning the film adaptation for Deers Gears of War.
