After nearly six years as President of Emerging Devices for AT&T Mobility, Glenn Lurie has been promoted to CEO of the division. The move is part of a major reorganization effort by AT&T to merge Mobility and Business Solutions (Enterprise) into one group. Lurie will continue to report to Ralph de la Vega, who has been tasked with overseeing the new division; de la Vega will in turn report to AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson. The news was first reported by Fierce Wireless, and Engadget has confirmed the report with official spokespeople. AT&T says that the new group will essentially fold the marketing and distribution arm of AT&T's Business Solutions department into Mobility, which it believes is the next "natural step" toward integrating the company's wireline and wireless operations.

AT&T's Glenn Lurie believes that WiFi-only tablets won't be around for long as the cost of cellular modems falls. Talking at CTIA Wireless, the "emerging devices" honcho thinks that the low ($30) cost of an HSPA+ radio will eventually make manufacturers abandon the two-tier model -- doubling the potential customers for his network. He pointed to the success of the sold-out Pantech Element and has said that the company would be offering similarly enabled tablet devices in the future. Of course, if manufacturers only charged $30 extra for 3G-enabled tablets in the first place, we probably wouldn't be having this conversation.

We had the opportunity to sit down and chat with Glenn Lurie -- AT&T's President of Emerging Enterprises and Partnerships -- about the company's Digital Life product which was announced back in February and launched today at CTIA 2012 here in New Orleans. Our takeaway? AT&T wants to tag everything in your home with an IP address and tie it all together seamlessly in a blaze of wireless glory. Don't believe us? Watch our video interview and judge for yourself. Brad Molen contributed to this report.

We had a chance to sit down last week with Glenn Lurie, the man recently selected to head up AT&T's new Emerging Devices group that is responsible for making sure the network's airwaves are supported by as many devices as possible -- laptops, netbooks, MIDs, e-books, you name it. Netbooks are clearly the push right now, but Glenn's eager to talk about e-books in particular, and it sounds like we can expect announcements before the year's out. Follow the break for the full interview!

  • AT&T, Verizon looking to join e-book reader market?

As far as business relationships go, Amazon and Sprint's Kindle lovechild has proven to be a fruitful endeavor. So it's with little surprise that other manufacturers have been seeking out that same feeling of carrier companionship. According to Verizon Wireless VP of open development Tony Lewis, there are five e-book readers in the works from various companies that are looking to be certified for use on the network, possibly in the same way Kindle uses its connectivity to download books on the fly. While he wouldn't provide any names, he did hint they were looking at segments of the market Kindle isn't currently catering to, such as college textbooks. We've also got word that AT&T's looking to hop on the bandwagon, with head of emerging devices Glenn Lurie chiming in that they want to be a part of that market. If that Whispernet connectivity is the feature that's been tempting you to go Kindle, looks like you'll have a few more options on the horizon, if you're patient.Read - VerizonRead - AT&T

Glenn Lurie, formerly the president of National Distribution for AT&T Mobility and in tight with the launch of the iPhone, is sitting in a new corner office today, and the placard outside now reads "President of AT&T Emerging Devices, National Distribution and Resale." In the role, Mr. Lurie will lead the carrier's "strategic initiative to drive the innovation that will bring wireless connectivity to a host of new consumer electronics devices and applications." We're talking PCs, MIDs, UMPCs, cars, navigation systems -- you name it, this is your man for getting AT&T wrapped up in it. One of his first quotes in the new position was that "high-speed wireless broadband service can enhance a huge variety of gadgets," and while some may say that's obvious, we're just glad the man has his sights set in the right direction. More WWAN devices of any kind? Yes, please.
