Electronic Arts told the LA Times during an interview this week that the Godfather franchise is done at the publisher. EA Games label president Frank Gibeau told the paper, "We're not going to do another one." He then noted that there was no Godfather game in the schedule going out three years.EA's PR followed up with the Times to say no decision had been made about the fate of the mafia franchise and that "Paramount is a great partner." The speculation is that EA is toning down its focus on licensed properties and working on making a stable of original franchises to exploit.

Two weeks after Godfather II launches April 7, several pieces of premium (i.e. get out your wallet, sucka) DLC will become available on Xbox 360 and PS3. Purchased separately, the three packs will set gamers back $14.75. The full bundle can be laundered for $10. The Pentangeli Map Pack: All-new Cuba multiplayer map and Junkyard multiplayer map. ($6.75 / 540) Level 4 Weapons Bundle: Modern Dillinger, the .700 Magnum Impact, the Herzstopper, the MG-S1 Sniper Wolfe, and the Street Sweeper. ($4.00 / 320) Jack of All Trades: Download Jimmy Lira – Lira starts out with the arsonist, engineer, medic, and safecracker specialties and comes equipped with a level 2 machine gun – the MP38. ($4.00 / 320) The Corleone Bundle -- All of the above ($10.00 / 800) Although you're free to complain about these microtransaction shenanigans in the comments below, remember the best way to let EA know how you feel is by voting with your wallet. It's an offer you can refuse.

  • 'Don control' in Godfather II introduces RTS-style gameplay you can't refuse

Our friends at GameTrailers.com have a new trailer for The Godfather II that showcases an interesting feature coming to the EA franchise: Don Control. The multiplayer feature offers what looks to be an RTS-style control system where one person hosting an online match can place bets on the match (that will in turn carry over into the single-player campaign), issue commands to their human teammates (should they cooperate, that is) and follow individuals of their choosing from a third-person perspective. Rather than phoning in the de rigeur multiplayer, it seems as though EA has taken the extra time afforded them by the game being pushed back to beef up a very different experience than what the single-player campaign offers. To see exactly what we're talking about, hit the break to check out the trailer.%Gallery-48229%

  • EA's Schofield sticks to 'quality games' mantra

Though EA's pledge to focus on quality games and new IP may have resulted in critical approval and a more positive image among gamers, the company has still been forced to take serious financial cost-cutting measures in recent months. Thankfully, Glen Schofield, manager of EA's Redwood Shores studio, isn't about to let some unpleasant realities get in the way of staff morale and a commitment to top-notch titles."I said, look, I can't tell you if this is the end or not, but we're making some great games here," Schofield relayed to GI.biz. "If we continue to make great games, if we continue to push this, we're not going to lose our jobs. Because we're making great stuff." The studio hopes to follow up the positively received but commercially disappointing survival-horror, Dead Space, with potentially great stuff like The Godfather II and hellish actioner Dante's Inferno.Schofield reportedly told his staff, "People who aren't making great games are going to lose their jobs. But if you're making quality and we continue to push on that, and you're a quality person then you're going to keep your job." That almost sounds like a threat, doesn't it? Talk about the man(tra) sticking it to you.

EA, going against the game releasing grain, will not be delaying Godfather II's release date as is usually the norm when publishers shift around their release schedules. Instead, they'll be bumping Godfather II's release date ahead (an expedite?) to late February. The 24th in North America and the 27th in Europe, to be exact. That means that a game that we really haven't seen or heard much of will be releasing in a little over a month's time. Interesting decision EA, now how about spending that marketing budget?

EA's The Godfather II will be hitting PS3, Xbox 360 and PC on February 24th in North America, and February 27th in Europe. The open-world game promises to be a more strategic affair than before with the new "Don's View" feature, allowing you to see a 3D representation of your criminal activity across all three of the game's cities. Those who pre-order the game will have a distinct advantage. The pre-order bonus is an exclusive in-game character, Tommy Cipolla. Other characters in the game start off with just one skill and a level-one weapon, while Tommy is truly a talented guy. He has two skills (arsonist and medic) and can carry a level-two shotgun. How badass. Surely, this is an offer you can't refuse.%Gallery-29683%

During a William Blair & Company's investor meeting earlier this week, EA boss John Riccitiello mentioned that their EA Redwood Shores studio is currently hard at work on a sequel to Godfather, conveniently called Godfather II. Surprise!More interesting is what Riccitiello then went on to say about Godfather II's interesting gameplay twist, telling investors that "you can play this game both at the street level, much like a GTA-style game, but you can also play it top-down, almost like you're in an RTS, controlling the strategy of the boroughs so you can see what's going on..." He also mentioned that it's a game they'll be "talking a lot about this fall", pretty much slating it for a 2009 release.GTA-style Godfather with a hint of RTS? Color us confused yet intrigued.
