GOG Big Fall Sale Finale: FTL, Fez, Sam And Max, Rogue Legacy
GOG.com kicked off its DRM-free Big Fall Sale Finale this morning, putting more than 700 games on sale until Tuesday, November 25. The sale is split into two 48-hour periods, the first a "recap of flash deals" that rapidly come and go, and a second period with the Big Fall Sale's daily bundles that starts on Sunday. Thrifty buyers may want to act fast, as some of the flash deals will expire within hours. The deals include Fez ($5), Rogue Legacy ($3), Deus Ex: Game of the Year Edition ($2.49), Pathologic ($2), System Shock 2 ($5), Rollercoaster Tycoon: Deluxe Edition ($3), FTL: Advanced Edition ($5) and the four primary Wing Commander games are $3 each, with the first two games bundled together. Sam & Max Save the World and Beyond Time and Space are $15 each, while The Devil's Playhouse is $17.49. OG.com also has deals on bundles starting today, such as the Fedora Deluxe Pack, a five-game Tex Murphy bundle that players can download at 80 percent off ($7.16). The digital games distributor is also offering a movie bundle for $8.45 that features five films, including The King of Arcades, Pixel Poetry and Minecraft: The Story of Mojang. [Image: GOG.com]
GOG adds Star Control, more Mac games
Good Old Games continues reaching out to new platforms, adding official Windows 8 support last week and expanding its Mac support with additional games this week. The newly Mac-compatible games include all three Star Controls and a bunch of games that are going to be really anticlimactic after the news that all three Star Controls are on Mac.Okay, the other new GOG Mac games include Puddle, Pirates! Gold Plus, Master of Orion 1+2, Alone in the Dark 1, 2, and 3, Broken Sword 2: Remastered, Dragonsphere (which is free), and Screamer 2.
Dreamfall: The Longest Journey, Far Cry 2, American Nightmare hit GOG
"Old" may no longer be a requirement for admission to the Good Old Games vault, but we're glad to see that "good" still makes the cut. The Longest Journey's sequel, Dreamfall, open world shooter Far Cry 2, and Remedy's Alan Wake's American Nightmare have arrived on the service, and are now available at $15 or less.Other recent updates include a few other, properly old games like Torin's Passage, the Quest for Glory series, and Silver.
Witcher 2 digital sales pass a quarter million
The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings sold nearly a quarter of a million copies through digital distribution channels between May 17 and October 30, publisher CD Projekt has announced. The company revealed in late August that it had reached nearly a million sales of the RPG between retail and digital. CD Projekt's DRM-free digital distribution service GOG.com sold approximately 35,000 copies of the game, with Steam picking up the five-headed lion's share with 195,000 sales. According to the publisher, "all other digital distribution outlets combined sold approximately ten thousand units." "The digital sales of The Witcher 2 have exceeded our expectations. We are even more pleased that our own platform GOG.com had such a great share in the Witcher's success," said Marcin Iwiński, co-founder of CD Projekt Group. "The performance of GOG.com in selling new titles is not completely surprising, as we have said for years that DRM isn't necessary. It is gratifying to see that the only platform that offered The Witcher 2 DRM-free from launch has performed so well." Well, yes, but over 550 percent more went the Steam route. So, the crowd angry enough about DRM to vote with their wallets form a vocal minority. It's not hard to see why Ubisoft, which has been one of the harshest of publishers when it comes to DRM, considers it a success.
You haven't Myst this great deal on Cyan games
If you're looking to pass a quiet weekend clicking your way through some puzzles, look no further than Good Old Games. The DRM-free retailer has put its whole selection of Cyan games on sale for half off this weekend. That includes Myst 1 and 2, the RealMyst remake, and the pre-Myst children's adventure game The Manhole for $2.99 each, and Uru for $4.99. If you want the whole package, and several lost weekends, you can get it all for $16.95. The offer ends Monday at 11:59 PM EDT, so ... buy the games you want before then, unless you want to pay more for your island getaway.
GOG updates site, gives away 1994's Dragonsphere
GOG.com has delivered two much-awaited site updates to their online game store. First, the team has developed a special downloader app, now available for Windows, that will optionally take care of your various GOG.com games downloads, running things like error checks easily and automatically. And there's also a new messaging system on the site, allowing users to chat and message each other about games and other topics. Both new features are optional, but GOG says they're meant to fill out the online experience. And to celebrate the big update, GOG (a.k.a. Good Old Games) is also giving away a title for free, MicroProse's point-and-click graphical adventure Dragonsphere, from all the way back in 1994. The game hasn't aged all that well (you young whippersnappers probably won't remember a time when all we had were 256 colors and fewer pixels than an iPhone), but if you're in the mood for a trip to retroland, the price is right.
GOG offers community favorites for half off this weekend
Assuming you're still buying games from GOG.com after last week's shutdown stunt, there are some excellent deals to be had this week on the site's "Community Favorites" list. All of the games on the list are half off, which means you can pick up Duke Nukem 3D: Atomic Edition or Myst: Masterpiece Edition for just three bucks, and Psychonauts or Syberia for just five. Sure, the site may have played a little too hard on your heartstrings with its fake story of shutting down for good just to promote a site revamp, but everybody appreciates cheap, classic PC games, right? And even if not, you can always go grab one of those iPhone games instead -- that's a great sale, too.
