We <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/04/18/gopro-hd-hero-2-will-get-free-protune-upgrade-with-24fps-higher/">got a peek at this one during NAB 2012</a> a few weeks ago and were told its flat lens should cut down on vignetting and blurring. Compatible with all of its <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/hdhero">HD Hero</a> family, the casing will set you back $50 and also up for grabs in the bricks-and-mortar likes of Best Buy, Sports Chalet and several specialist sports stores. All that remains is to recall where we left that <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/05/23/depthx-robotic-submarine-maps-worlds-deepest-sinkhole/">robot submarine</a>.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/gopro-nab-2012/">GoPro @ NAB 2012</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/gopro-nab-2012/#4971746"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/04/05dsc00916_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/gopro-nab-2012/#4971747"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/04/04dsc00926_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/gopro-nab-2012/#4971748"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/04/03dsc00922-1334783600_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/gopro-nab-2012/#4971749"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/04/02dsc00923_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/gopro-nab-2012/#4971750"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/04/01screen-shot-2012-04-17-at-11.00.48-am_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div></p><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/05/14/gopro-flat-lens-dive-housing/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Flat-front dive housing for GoPro cameras available now, ready for your Memorial Day diving trip</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/05/14/gopro-flat-lens-dive-housing/">Flat-front dive housing for GoPro cameras available now, ready for your Memorial Day diving trip</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 14 May 2012 19:11:00 EST. The closest many of us will get to outer space is photography and, thanks to ever-cheaper and ever-more-durable cameras, getting those pictures is easier than ever. We recently visited Project Aether on location in Fairbanks Alaska, a group working to study what happens in the upper atmosphere and, along the way, inspire students around the world. Using a helium-filled weather balloon and a payload made of carbon fiber tubing, the team lofted a set of GoPro <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/12/24/gopro-hd-hero-2-review/">HD Hero 2</a> cameras, one of which captured photos of the green aurora borealis and, off to the side, the lingering the glow from a long-set sun. That black arc below? That's the earth.</p><p> We'll have much, much more to come on Project Aether in an upcoming Distro feature, but for now, enjoy the video below -- and keep your head in the clouds.</p><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/04/25/project-aether-films-northern-lights-at-100-000-feet-using-a-gop/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Project Aether films northern lights at 100,000 feet using a GoPro camera on a balloon (video)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/04/25/project-aether-films-northern-lights-at-100-000-feet-using-a-gop/">Project Aether films northern lights at 100,000 feet using a GoPro camera on a balloon (video)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 25 Apr 2012 08:01:00 EST. Once it's released in the in the summer, the new ProTune mode will enable owners to record their video at a new 35Mbps data rate, and shoot at 24fps to more easily intercut it with other sources later. Also integral to the new software is the "CineStyle" color profile developed by Technicolor that will let pros and prosumers streamline their workflow and produce better looking videos. We got a look at some of the video shot with beta versions of the new firmware aboard and the tweaks did plenty to enhance the color balance and image quality we were already impressed by <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/04/09/contour-vs-gopro-hd-hero-2-through-the-desert-and-into-th/">earlier this month in the desert</a>. Unsurprisingly given the pro atmosphere here at NAB, GoPro is also continuing to push the Cineform codec it acquired last year. There are press releases after the break as well as a few more pictures in the gallery, including a few more of its new underwater dive housing (above) with a flat front to reduce blurring and vignetting.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/gopro-nab-2012/">GoPro @ NAB 2012</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/gopro-nab-2012/#4971746"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/04/05dsc00916_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/gopro-nab-2012/#4971747"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/04/04dsc00926_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/gopro-nab-2012/#4971748"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/04/03dsc00922-1334783600_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/gopro-nab-2012/#4971749"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/04/02dsc00923_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/gopro-nab-2012/#4971750"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/04/01screen-shot-2012-04-17-at-11.00.48-am_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div></p><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/04/18/gopro-hd-hero-2-will-get-free-protune-upgrade-with-24fps-higher/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>GoPro HD Hero 2's free ProTune upgrade will add 24fps and higher bitrates</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/04/18/gopro-hd-hero-2-will-get-free-protune-upgrade-with-24fps-higher/">GoPro HD Hero 2's free ProTune upgrade will add 24fps and higher bitrates</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 18 Apr 2012 17:51:00 EST. Sometimes it's a no brainer, with some awesome new gadget just aching for some air time. Other times it's a matter of our wanting to do something cool, like, say, flying a plane. The <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/12/24/gopro-hd-hero-2-review/">GoPro</a> / <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/12/contour-helmet-cam-goes-official-bringing-1080p-video-with-wid/">Contour</a> segment from the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/03/26/the-engadget-show-31-douglas-rushkoff-sony-irobot-mwc-and-ai/">last Engadget Show</a> was a little bit of both. The ultra-rugged camcorders were a perfect fit for our desire to take on some extreme activities in the Nevada desert.<br /> <br /> We started out by taking Polaris RZR for a spin on some sand dunes around the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. And while we didn't really anticipate that it would be windy enough that day to ground planes at nearby McCarren Airport, the 50MPH sandstorms certainly did their part in testing the mettle of the devices -- and our camera crew, for that matter. We strapped both to the roll bar of the all-terrain vehicle and took off into the desert.<br /> <br /> Things were thankfully a bit calmer when we took to the sky the following day with help from the folks at Sky Combat Ace. The camcorders joined us in our respective cockpits, proving that they could take the punishment of a several G ride -- even if we didn't hold up so well. This time around, the buggy's got a Canon 550D, is sporting an armored shroud and it brought a buddy with some serious imaging chops to help it get up close and personal with a pride of lions in Kenya's Masai Mara. The new BeetleCam, dubbed the Mark II, has six wheels, two flashes, a Canon EOS 1Ds MK III for stunning stills and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/gopro">GoPro</a> camera capable of streaming HD video. How did round two in Africa turn out? Pretty darn well, but as they say, the proof is in the pudding, so check out the amazing shots taken by the twin BeetleCams at the source below.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/03/05/beetlecams-back-with-armor-on-board-and-it-brought-a-friend-pa/">BeetleCam's back with armor on board, and it brought a friend packing a Canon EOS 1Ds MK III</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 05 Mar 2012 04:12:00 EST. A problem that's seemingly inspired a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/kickstarter">Kickstarter</a> project called Headcase Pro. Effectively it's a lightweight aluminum case aimed at making the GoPro infinitely more mountable. Unlike the bog-standard plastic housing, the Headcase Pro has a self-tightening door that should prevent it from flying open on impact, along with gunk-repelling rubber sealed buttons. Most pleasing to frustrated directors will be the nine threaded mount holes, letting you attach it to your existing tripods and peripherals. Also, the Headcase Pro is large enough to work with the BacPac and battery packs without the need to change doors, and a protective lens ring is a final sweetener. For those of us with more amateur needs, there is the Headgear model, which fits around the standard GoPro case, but still bumps your mount choices and protects your lens. Think this has got legs? Or simply want one for yourself? Then $328 will get you one of the first run, and push the project along to its $25,000 goal. Still not sure? Then focus on the video after the break for a demo.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/unruly-headcase-pro-headgear/">UNRULY Headcase Pro / Headgear</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/unruly-headcase-pro-headgear/#4860321"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/03/prov20jlens560x_thumbnail.png" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/unruly-headcase-pro-headgear/#4860322"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/03/prov20jclosed-empty560x_thumbnail.png" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/unruly-headcase-pro-headgear/#4860318"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/03/prov20jopen-battery560x_thumbnail.png" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/unruly-headcase-pro-headgear/#4860319"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/03/prov20jopen-monitor560x_thumbnail.png" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/unruly-headcase-pro-headgear/#4860320"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/03/prov20jopen-empty560x_thumbnail.png" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/03/02/insert-coin-unruly-headcase-wants-to-make-your-gopro-less-so/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Insert Coin: UNRULY Headcase, wants to make your GoPro less 'so so'</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/03/02/insert-coin-unruly-headcase-wants-to-make-your-gopro-less-so/">Insert Coin: UNRULY Headcase, wants to make your GoPro less 'so so'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 02 Mar 2012 11:19:00 EST. Having already launched an <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/23/kogeto-dot-brings-bite-size-panoramic-video-recording-to-iphone/">iPhone version</a> of the device back in May, Kogeto has a prototype of its Android counterpart on display here at CES, along with a second prototype, for the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/12/24/gopro-hd-hero-2-review/">GoPro HD Hero 2</a>. The idea behind the device is pretty simple: just download Kogeto's app, attach the holster to your smartphone, and begin recording. The accessory will then automatically capture 360-degree panoramic video, which can then be uploaded to the web, via the company's dedicated web platform. While you're there, you can also use Kogeto's online editing tool to cut and splice your video, jumping from angle to angle with the company's intuitive user interface. The quality of the video we captured during our hands-on with an iPhone 4 version wasn't exactly top-notch, but we're told that there are notable improvements for 4S users. All told, it's definitely a cool little attachment, and one that seems rife with creative potential. The iPhone 4 version, as we mentioned earlier this year, retails for $79. The Android rendition, meanwhile, is slated to hit the market this fall, likely for a similar price. No word yet on when we can expect to see the Dot arrive for GoPro, but be sure to check out our full gallery and video, after the break.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/kogeto-dot-panoramic-video-capture-prototypes-for-android-gopro-at-ces-2012/">Kogeto Dot panoramic video capture prototypes for Android, GoPro at CES 2012</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/kogeto-dot-panoramic-video-capture-prototypes-for-android-gopro-at-ces-2012/#4747287"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/01/belieberdsc00508mat800_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/kogeto-dot-panoramic-video-capture-prototypes-for-android-gopro-at-ces-2012/#4747288"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/01/belieberdsc00509mat800_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/kogeto-dot-panoramic-video-capture-prototypes-for-android-gopro-at-ces-2012/#4747289"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/01/belieberdsc00510mat800_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/kogeto-dot-panoramic-video-capture-prototypes-for-android-gopro-at-ces-2012/#4747292"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/01/belieberdsc00511mat800_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/kogeto-dot-panoramic-video-capture-prototypes-for-android-gopro-at-ces-2012/#4747293"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/01/belieberdsc00512mat800_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /><br /><em>Mat Smith contributed to this report.</em><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/12/kogeto-unveils-dot-panoramic-video-capture-prototypes-for-androi/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Kogeto unveils Dot panoramic video capture prototypes for Android, GoPro (video)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/12/kogeto-unveils-dot-panoramic-video-capture-prototypes-for-androi/">Kogeto unveils Dot panoramic video capture prototypes for Android, GoPro (video)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 12 Jan 2012 17:41:00 EST. We're certainly not going to say no to more functionality for GoPro's rugged camera units. Here at CES's Digital Experience, we've got to get a glimpse at both the WiFi BacPac and Remote Control Kit. The WiFi Bacpac does what you'd expect it to do -- but with an extra twist. Alongside WiFi connectivity, it'll also play nice with both Android and iOS devices. The apps will display any captured content immediately, with a free-to-download app that will connect with the camera.<br />
	<br />
	The remote control kit, meanwhile, is capable of stringing together several different cams, with a largely dual-button setup that looks an awful lot like a heart-rate monitor. Check the hands-on after the break and expect to see these arrive later this year -- price to be confirmed.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/gopro-hd-hero2/">GoPro HD Hero2</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/gopro-hd-hero2/#4733173"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/01/hero001_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/gopro-hd-hero2/#4733176"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/01/hero002_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/gopro-hd-hero2/#4733177"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/01/hero003_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/gopro-hd-hero2/#4733179"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/01/hero004_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/gopro-hd-hero2/#4733181"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/01/hero005_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div></div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/09/gopro-hd-wi-fi-bacpac-and-remote-control-kit-hands-on-video/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>GoPro Wi-Fi BacPac and Remote Control Kit hands-on (video)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/09/gopro-hd-wi-fi-bacpac-and-remote-control-kit-hands-on-video/">GoPro Wi-Fi BacPac and Remote Control Kit hands-on (video)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 09 Jan 2012 23:16:00 EST. Now, you can add HD Hero 2 ($300) to the ever growing list of options now, as this is the latest (and they say greatest) incarnation to date. <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/11/16/gopro-HD-hero-review-and-helmet-cam-face-off/">Last time</a> we tested the Hero Original -- as it's now called -- against the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/25/contourgps-helmet-cam-review/">Contour HD</a>, but now we're pitting new against old, like for like, side by side. Not only will we discover how the new boy stands up against the camera it effectively usurps, we'll also see how it fares out in the field. Above all, we'll see whether a smattering of new recording options, and a supposedly "two times sharper" image make it worth the extra dollars.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/gopro-hd-hero-2-review-0/">GoPro HD Hero 2 review</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/gopro-hd-hero-2-review-0/#4676496"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/12/mg3298-1323785940_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/gopro-hd-hero-2-review-0/#4676498"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/12/mg3299_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/gopro-hd-hero-2-review-0/#4676500"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/12/mg3300_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/gopro-hd-hero-2-review-0/#4676502"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/12/mg3301_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/gopro-hd-hero-2-review-0/#4676503"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/12/mg3302_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/12/24/gopro-hd-hero-2-review/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>GoPro HD Hero 2 review</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/12/24/gopro-hd-hero-2-review/">GoPro HD Hero 2 review</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Sat, 24 Dec 2011 16:00:00 EST. Want to catch every frame of your next extreme sports wipeout in all of its grotesque glory? <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/GoPro/">GoPro</a> knows where you're coming from, and has updated its line of high definition helmet cams to help you capture every bone-breaking moment. The HD Hero2 competitively boasts that it's twice as powerful its 2009 predecessor, the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/11/16/gopro-HD-hero-review-and-helmet-cam-face-off/">original HD Hero</a>. The new helmet cam promises to capture 1080p 16:9 footage from atop your sweaty noggin at both narrow (90-degree), wide (170-degree) and medium (127-degree) angles, and can snap up to ten 11 megapixel photos per second. The camera's mini-HDMI port, composite out, USB, SD card and HERO ports will help you share the spoils of your spills when your adventure ends -- at least until this winter, when GoPro's WiFi BacPac promises to enable live broadcasting and camera control over WiFi. Best of all? The Hero2 kills the original HD Hero's confusing 3-digit code interface in favor of a simple language-based menu.<br />
<br />
The HD Hero2 comes in three $300 configurations: outdoor, motorsports, and surf editions, all of which are compatible with existing accessories. Too rich for your blood? Then you'll be happy to know that the previous models are getting price drops -- $200 for the original HD Hero and a paltry $150 for its <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/30/gopro-releases-its-budget-friendlier-179-hd-hero-960-teases-3d/">"960" variant</a>. Hit the break for the official PR and a full list of features.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/24/gopro-launches-hd-hero2-helmet-cam-announces-video-streaming-wi/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>GoPro launches HD Hero2 helmet cam, announces video streaming Wi-Fi pack for winter</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/24/gopro-launches-hd-hero2-helmet-cam-announces-video-streaming-wi/">GoPro launches HD Hero2 helmet cam, announces video streaming Wi-Fi pack for winter</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 24 Oct 2011 03:01:00 EST. By the time winter rolls around, Alistair Roberts will probably remember his summer vacation a heckuva lot better than the rest of us. Why? Because he brought an <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/30/homebuilt-uav-hunts-down-hydrogen-balloons-fires-firework-flame/">FPV</a> plane to record his mountain biking holiday in the Spanish sun. With a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/06/gopro-3d-hero-battery-and-lcd-bacpac-hands-on/">GoPro camera</a> mounted on the servo-powered cradle, Alistair piloted the plane by moving his head and using a remote control -- all while streaming first person video from the cockpit into a pair of goggles. By pairing the high tech toy with another GoPro on his dad's mountain bike, and a stationary camera on the ground, Alistair was able to create a truly amazing vacation video from 1200 - 1500 feet in the air traveling around 20kmph (12mph) -- way cooler than any of the ones our dads recorded back in the day. Check out the video after the break.<br />

That globe, which launched June 15th, was attached to a weather balloon, and apparently carried with it a GPS / GSM tracker, two <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/gopro">GoPro</a> cameras, two Canon cameras, and one <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/26/ultimate-buzz-lightyear-robot-to-the-rescue-on-video/">Buzz Lightyear</a> figurine. The mission? Capture last week's lunar eclipse. Lucky for us, the mission was successful and both the cartoon astronaut and the accompanying film were successfully recovered. The resulting photographs are quite stunning, but you don't have to take our word for it. If you missed <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/15/google-and-slooh-space-camera-make-todays-lunar-eclipse-viewabl/">Google's live stream</a>, you can catch up with Buzz and the team at the source link below.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/21/russian-eclipse-enthusiasts-launch-floating-globe-to-shoot-the-m/">Russian eclipse enthusiasts launch floating globe to shoot the moon</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 21 Jun 2011 21:16:00 EST. Remember that 3D Hero expansion kit we ogled back at CES? <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/06/gopro-3d-hero-battery-and-lcd-bacpac-hands-on/">How would you forget</a> is likely the superior question. At any rate, GoPro has just announced the general availability of that very module, with $99.99 getting you a waterproof 3D expansion kit for the insanely popular <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/11/16/gopro-HD-hero-review-and-helmet-cam-face-off/">HD Hero camera</a>. For those who've forgotten, the kit allows a pair of 1080p lenses to form a single 1080p 3D camera, and it's waterproof to 180 feet, too. In related news, it seems as if <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/GoPro/">GoPro</a> has also taken this opportunity to snap up CineForm, and it's wasting no time in putting the outfit's compression and workflow technology to good use. Customers can surf over to to GoPro's website in order to suck down a gratis copy of CinaForm Studio, which makes it easier on 3D shooters to create, watch and share their three-dee imagery. The app also converts 2D material into 3D H.264 files, and for the price mentioned here, it ain't a half bad inclusion. PR's after the break, if you're so inclined to visit.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/05/gopro-ships-200-3d-hero-expansion-kit-acquires-cineform-in-its/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>GoPro ships $99 3D Hero expansion kit, acquires CineForm in its spare time</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/05/gopro-ships-200-3d-hero-expansion-kit-acquires-cineform-in-its/">GoPro ships $99 3D Hero expansion kit, acquires CineForm in its spare time</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 05 Apr 2011 06:33:00 EST. Aiming your helmet camera and replaying footage is a problem on most models. The <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/07/26/drift-innovations-hd170-helmet-cam-review/">HD170</a> makes it easy, but then hits you with a lot of bulk. <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/contour">Contour</a> is working on a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/contour,liveviewfinder">viewfinder app</a> for iOS and Android devices that will wirelessly stream video, but that's not out yet. GoPro's LCD BacPac, on the other hand, is shipping today. We spent a little <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/06/gopro-3d-hero-battery-and-lcd-bacpac-hands-on/">quality time with one at CES</a>, a tiny screen that clips on the back of a 1080p <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/hdhero">HD Hero</a> and lets you see what's being filmed and also play back what you've captured earlier. As you can see it adds about a quarter-inch of depth onto the camera but comes with a replacement back door to retain compatibility with all mounts. It's shipping now for $80, making it a somewhat expensive accessory for a $300 camera.<br />

Helmet cam user? Chances are you've suffered the extreme indignity of capturing footage of the sky or the ground but, sadly, nothing in between. They're hard to aim. <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/gopro">GoPro</a> is tackling that issue with the LCD BacPack, a clip-on LCD that attaches on the back interface port on <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/hdhero">1080p HD Hero</a> cameras, showing you not only what the camera is looking at but also battery life and even a speaker. Then there's the Battery BacPac, which is the same size but instead of a display makes room for a second battery and, thanks to its miniUSB port, doubles as an external battery charger. Neat! And, yes, there's a new back cover needed to fit over the new bulge.<br />
<br />
Finally there's the egregious 3D Hero expansion, a revised version of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/30/gopro-releases-its-budget-friendlier-179-hd-hero-960-teases-3d/">what we saw in September</a>. It comes with a cable to ensure that both start filming at the same time, though sadly it doesn't come with any extra neck muscles to keep this thing aloft should you affix it to your helmet. We got a chance to look at some of the resulting footage and the results are compelling -- not as clear as your average big-budget Hollywood summer release but, considering the size of the thing, quite compelling. All three devices are expected to launch in the next few months but, sadly, at undisclosed prices. <br />

Photos make great mementos for important moments, but a picture of your kid taking her first step or writing his first blog post isn't quite as meaningful as a full-motion video of the event in question. That's why a video recorder of some sort is a must-have, and while your average compact camera is capturing better footage than ever, sometimes you need something a little more dedicated. That's when you need a camcorder, and this year we even have a bunch of 3D models to choose from. Which ones are right for you and for your budget? Click on through to find out.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/11/19/engadgets-holiday-gift-guide-video-cameras/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Engadget's Holiday Gift Guide: Video Cameras</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/11/19/engadgets-holiday-gift-guide-video-cameras/">Engadget's Holiday Gift Guide: Video Cameras</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 19 Nov 2010 13:46:00 EST. It's been almost two months since <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/gopro">GoPro</a> announced it'd be releasing a cheaper helmet cam, the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/04/gopro-bringing-high-def-helmet-cams-to-the-masses-launching-18/">HD Hero 960</a>, positioning it beneath the $299 and 1080p HD Hero we <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/11/16/gopro-HD-hero-review-and-helmet-cam-face-off/">enjoyed last year</a> and give those doing professional stunts on amateur budgets a chance to capture their glory. Now here it is, yours for the taking today -- if you don't mind a resolution capped at 1280 x 960 and a deleted "Hero Bus" expansion port, meaning no external displays or batteries. That port is what you'll need to use the company's next accessory, a dual camera mount shown off at Interbike (and pictured below) pairing two of the HD Heros to film in 3D. You'll need to manually stitch the resulting footage together, but there is at least a sync cable included so that the two start and stop at the same time -- something sadly lacking on the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/10/02/tachyon-xc-3d-helmet-cam-hands-on/">Tachyon XC 3D</a>. That mount is set to retail for $99, but the requirement for dual $299 cameras will price this out of most budgets. However, the $179 MSRP on the HD Hero 960 makes it a compelling alternative to Contour's $220 720p <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/contourhd">ContourHD</a>. <br />

If you want high-def footage from your lid you have <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/helmetcam">more choices than ever</a>, but if you're on a budget there just aren't that many. The 720p <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/contourhd">ContourHD</a> is currently the best value at around $230, but we've received word from <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/gopro">GoPro</a> that the company is looking to under-cut that with the upcoming $180 HD Hero 960. We have scant few details about this new model, set for release this fall, but based on the name we're guessing it'll fall short of the current <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/gopro,hdhero">HD Hero's</a> 1080p and offer a maximum of 960p, which should be plenty of pixels for most extremophiles. We also have to figure it will continue with its predecessors boxy stylings, but we'd certainly be happy to see a somewhat sleeker redesign.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/04/gopro-bringing-high-def-helmet-cams-to-the-masses-launching-18/">GoPro bringing high-def helmet cams to the masses, launching $180 HD Hero 960</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 04 Aug 2010 12:33:00 EST. What's this, another way to capture for posterity the extremeness of our helmet-requiring pastimes? Yes indeed, a new player has entered the increasingly crowded POV/action/helmet camera market, the Drift Innovation HD170, offering 1080p recording in a durable case that stands poised to take on GoPro's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/gopro">HD Hero</a> and VHoldr's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/contourhd">ContourHD 1080p</a>. However, the built-in color LCD here lets you do something you just can't do on either of those two: check your footage on the camera itself. Does this make up for some of the cam's other shortcomings? Read on to find out.<br />

<div>What's this, another tiny, high-definition camera to strap onto your person before doing something wild and crazy? Yes, it's the latest pixel-pushing contender for high-def helmetcam supremacy, the GoPro HD Hero; a little gray box in a waterproof case that can record 1080p at 30fps, 720p at 60, and comes with a selection of mounts that will enable the thing to hang on to just about whatever you want to sling it from -- but at $299 you might not feel particularly inclined to put it in harm's way. Worth the risk, and how does it compare to the competition and its predecessors? Read on for the full analysis, and of course plenty of gratuitous high definition footage.<br />

GoPro announced its <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/07/23/gopro-offers-1080p-high-def-in-a-little-helmetcam-with-the-hd-he/">1080p HD Hero Wide</a> helmet cam earlier this year, back when people were jumping off of high things and speeding around other things whilst wearing helmets. Now the summer adventure season is drawing to a close, the winter one is starting to develop, and the company has released a series of high-def, high-adrenaline clips to show what that camera can do -- most filmed when the days were still long and the sun still high. Sadly the videos are not embeddable, but click on that read link for your morning dose of speed. The company has also released a good bit of information about the cam, that it's 30fps at the full 1080p or an optional 60fps mode at 720p. 720p footage is recorded at a particularly wide 170 degrees, while 1080p footage is slightly less wide (though still rather broad) 127. Also, the company promises that the microphone will actually be usable at speed, a rarity in this sort of device. It's all slated to ship this fall, and we look forward to putting one through its paces then.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/misc/" rel="tag">Misc</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/camcorders/" rel="tag">Camcorders</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/09/29/gopro-releases-first-footage-from-1080p-hd-hero-wide-helmet-cam/">GoPro releases first footage from 1080p HD Hero Wide helmet cam</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 29 Sep 2009 08:51:00 EST. The high definition-helmetcam wars are heating up. We recently tested the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/30/vholdr-contourhd-wearable-hd-camcorder-hands-on-and-impressions/">VholdR's sleek ContourHD</a> 720p goggle-mounted shooter and definitely enjoyed it... but you know us: always looking for more. More is what the GoPro HD Hero Wide looks set to offer, with full 1080p recording at 30fps; a first in the extreme camera segment and not something frequently found in a device this small. Just as impressive is a 720p at 60fps recording mode, perfect for catching every detail of your aerials and varials -- and subsequent faceplants. We're still not particularly fond of the "cube on the head" look of the thing, but that cube will at least now contain an 1100mAh battery, said to offer a solid two to three hours of battery life. Quite a package, and while the expected package price of $299 is $100 more than the company's current offerings, it's still solid value. No word on when this will be showing up at the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/03/25/supercross-rider-dons-gopro-camera-on-helmet-wins-race/">supercross scene</a>.<br />

Oh sure, we've come across <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/05/02/twenty20-helmet-camera-records-sweet-jumps/">oodles</a> of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2006/10/24/oregon-scientific-busts-out-head-mountable-atc-2000-webcam/">cameras</a> designed to be <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/08/15/samsungs-sc-x300l-wearable-camcorder-gets-reviewed/">mounted</a> on or around one's noggin, but c'mon, surely we aren't the only folks who reckoned no one actually <em>used</em> these things, right? Taking a huge leap forward for lifebloggers and fans of recording sweet jumps everywhere, Yamaha's Josh Hill managed to not only rock a GoPro Motorsports HERO camera for an entire race, but he also grabbed the gold in front of some 41,000 onlookers in the Minneapolis Metrodome. See kids -- strapping gizmos onto your head isn't <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/02/28/remote-wrangler-straps-remotes-gizmos-to-your-noggin/">just for nerds</a> and basement dwellers, after all.
