If you like the idea of wearing ridiculously extravagant costumes whilst beating up people, but don't have the money, lack of moral code or WWE career to support it, we're here for you with a friendly reminder: As part of Microsoft's Games with Gold service, Gotham City Impostors is free right now for Xbox Live Gold users. So go get already. The Xbox 360 multiplayer shooter is joined tomorrow by wrestle-former Guacamelee: Super Turbo Championship Edition on Xbox One, and between those two you'll get enough masks, spandex and wacky violence to sustain you right through to winter.

  • MMO Burnout: Revisiting Gotham City Impostors

Remember that scene in 2008's The Dark Knight where those nerdling Batman-wannabes were running around in imitation capes and cowls shooting at criminals with shotguns? That's pretty much what you get when you log into Gotham City Impostors, Monolith's garish, goofy first-person shooter set against the sprawling backdrop of DC Comics' legendary mythos. And for all you MMO historians in the crowd, yes, that's the same Monolith that originally developed the late, great Matrix Online. %Gallery-174397%

  • Gotham City Impostors F2P arrives on Steam very, very quietly [update: trailer]

A free-to-play version of Gotham City Impostors apparently launched very quietly on Steam yesterday. Monolith Productions' multiplayer shooter, originally released for Xbox Live Arcade, PlayStation Network, and PC in February as a paid-for download, is now available to download onto PCs for free. What's curious is there seems to be zero official word from Monolith or publisher Warner Bros. Interactive on the matter. What's more, the game appeared as an unofficial listing on Steam's Open Steamworks database earlier this week. There are downloadable content packs listed on impostors' Steam page too, although the price list looks oddly incomplete. It very much seems the game launched accidentally, but it's definitely there. We're downloading it right now, and people are playing it.We've reached out to Warner Bros. Interactive for comment.[Thanks, Ethan]Update: Warner Bros. Interactive sends us a press release, which you can find after the break. It says those who download the new Steam version have "will have access to the original game, as well as all DLC packs, which includes new maps, weapons, mascots and more." There's also a 'Migration to Steam' page up on the game's website, which offers 'exclusive rewards' to anyone who' previously purchased the game.

Prepare to be slightly, mildly confused. Gotham City Impostors, the non-Batman Batman game, is getting a free map based on Arkham Asylum, setting for a different recent Batman game. There's probably a way we could present that information that would be confusing, like "Batman game to be set in Arkham Asylum" or "You've never been to Arkham in this Batman game" but really it's not a big deal. Can you tell we started this post planning to play up the confusion angle and then stopped ourselves?Speaking of confusion, this free map launched on the North American PSN last week by accident, in place of the Rodeo Pirate Pack. It will launch as planned on Xbox May 16, and PC at an unspecified date soon after.

The free update for Gotham City Impostors is out today – and, unlike the updated version of the other Batman game, it doesn't add any truly repellent box art. Instead, it adds a new "East End" map, new language options for created characters, and a "Bounty Hunter" team deathmatch mode.

Another free update is gracefully dropping from on high in Gotham City Impostors, adding a new map, game mode and character customization option to Monolith's downloadable shooter. The East End map is described as a grimy and dilapidated section of Gotham, all the better for two gangs of psychos to wage war.Bounty Hunter is a new team deathmatch-based mode where, upon mowing down an enemy player, you'll see them leave behind a coin – grab enemy coins for points and your teammate's cash to deny the enemy their score. The last part of the update is customizable player character languages, which means you can finally run around as a Spanish wannabe-Batman.

The Simpsons Arcade Game took the top spot in the list of downloaded PSN and PS3 games for the month of February, though there is no mention of whether free PlayStation Plus downloads are considered. [Update: Sony has confirmed that PlayStation Plus downloads were not factored into this list -- this list is all sales.] Following The Simpsons is Gotham City Impostors and House of the Dead 3, according to the PlayStation Blog. With the launch of the PS Vita last month, Sony is now ranking downloads for that platform in its own specific, monthly list. Escape Plan was the most downloaded Vita game for the month, followed by 3G freebie Super Stardust Delta and Tales From Space: Mutant Blobs Attack.Hit up the PlayStation Blog for the full list.

The first batch of free Gotham City Impostors DLC hit Xbox 360 in February, and it's now available on PC; it includes katanas, pistols, drop-in matchmaking, improved mouse support and a new highrise level, The 25th Floor. There's no word yet on a PS3 DLC launch. Producer Nate Edson and associate producer Lucas Myers explain the new PC content in the above video, wherein they prove they are the best actors in existence, ever. No, really -- keeping with the "impostors" theme, Edson and Myers obviously want to throw us off and are therefore pretending to be terrible actors in a scene that is painful to watch, and they act horribly so well that they're obviously the best in the business.

You've been doing a great job killing those Batman and/or Joker imitators in Gotham City Impostors and Monolith wants to reward your hard work with some free DLC. Available starting today on Xbox 360, this content update adds a new level called The 25th Floor, a rooftop arena with a lovely view of the Gotham skyline. In addition to the map, there are also some new outfits and a few new weapons: a semi-automatic pistol and a katana. Finally, a new toxic gas support item is available, which should help you injure and disorient your opponents with stinky, stinky gases.PS3 and PC players will have to wait for the DLC, though Monolith and WB haven't revealed exactly when this content will come to those platforms.

  • Users report reset glitch in Gotham City Impostors

It seems Gotham City Impostors might not have gone through quite the same ruthless training and disciplined regimen that Bruce Wayne did before he became Batman. An admin on the game's official forums recently posted about a potential glitch in the game that resets earned stats and unlocked content, and that thread has earned itself a whopping 63 pages of irate customers on both Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3. Just losing your stats in the game is a waste of time, but some of those customers bought and paid money for XP boosts and other items to help them level up, which means they're losing that money as well.Another official forum post suggests that the problem arises when the trial version of the game is converted into the full version. We've contacted WBIE for more information on the glitch. If you're thinking about unlocking the full game or have a lot of stats saved up already, you might want to step gingerly until a fix is out.[Thanks to everyone who sent this in!]

It seems that some PS3 users are running into trouble with Gotham City Impostors, and we're not referring to all the fake Batmen clogging the streets. According to posts on the Gotham City Impostors forums, some PS3 users are unable to unlock the full version of the game. Even after paying for the title, some find themselves stuck with the trial version.A forum administrator notes that Warner Bros. is working on the issue with Sony and asks that users experiencing the problem respond to this thread with their PSN ID and the country from which they are playing. In the meantime, if you haven't already purchased Gotham City Impostors, we'd recommend waiting until the issue is resolved.

We should have known from its title that Gotham City Impostors couldn't be trusted to operate entirely how it promised. The Xbox Live version isn't set to launch until tomorrow, but today more than 100 DLC items are available in the Xbox Marketplace, ranging from 80 to 320 MS Points. All of the items are cosmetic and won't affect gameplay in any way, Monolith tweeted, and all of them will be unlockable in the full game.We assume it could have been worse -- getting access to optional DLC before a game launches is better than getting access to required, paid-for DLC months after a game launches. So really Gotham City Impostors isn't such a bad guy after all ... oh. We see what you did there, Monolith.

Monolith's Bats vs. Jokerz shooter, Gotham City Impostors, was originally due for release on digital distribution services by January 10. It's been pushed to February, according to a quick missive from publisher Warner Bros. The title is in beta now. The real Batman would show up on time. Just saying. This seems to be one faux-superhero shootout game worth waiting for. Our preview lauded its "feel factor," "quick and responsive" controls, and "powerful and diverse" arsenal.

There's a thing that most licensed games just don't get. The license association, the premise, really, is the bait, but it's the gameplay that's the hook. The game is the thing. For just a few minutes, let's strip away the goofy exterior surrounding Gotham City Impostors. Take away the Batman references, the Joker allusions, the bright colors, the bonkers aesthetic. Dress it all the way down to the only thing that matters: the game. When you do that, you've got something more surprising than a weird Batman game without Batman, with lots of guns: a candidate for the best downloadable console shooter since Battlefield 1943.%Gallery-130941%
