Our dreams of finding intelligent life in the depths of space usually involve more chipper scenarios than what's seen in this narrative trailer for Grey Goo, which launches this week. Can't we just have lighthearted destruction a la Lilo & Stitch? Why all the threats of extinction? [Image: Grey Box]

Petroglyph Games' combat-focused real-time strategy, Grey Goo, will deploy units for battle on Steam on January 23, 2015. Community Manager Mathew "Berek" Anderson shared the release date on the official Grey Goo forums, explaining that the team's alpha testing supplied enough information to allow them to create a full development schedule, negating the need for a future beta. More information will be released over the coming weeks, including background details on Grey Goo's tri-faction fight on Ecosystem Nine between the Goo, the Morra and the human race. Petroglyph Games continues its focus on the real-time strategy subgenre with the announcement of Grey Goo, a new real-time strategy game that promises to focus on combat instead of micromanagement. Little is known of the game's plot (beyond the title's reference to the theoretical apocalypse scenario brought about by endlessly replicating nanomachines), but Grey Goo will feature three unique factions as well as "epic" units for each. Additionally, the game features adaptive AI "based on real-world Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) concepts," which the developer claims should give the game "near-infinite replay value." Grey Goo is slated for release on Steam this Fall. More details can be found on the game's website, though what's currently available is scant. [Image: Petroglyph Games]

Second Life was attacked over the weekend by a worm that created self-replicating rings, similar to the ones from Sonic games. When users touched them, the rings multiplied, clogging the game world with what Linden Labs called "grey goo." The service was closed briefly to clean up the rings and their nefarious code. While we don't play much Second Life, we're fascinated by its culture. We think that that a big part of general society will eventually meet in an MMO world; these interfaces may turn into the next generation of the internet. And the attack reminds us that pranksters -- or worse -- will always be present.Second Life is still a miniscule scale of what MMOs could become. Will these sorts of hacks prevent MMOs from reaching the general population?[Via Slashdot]
