We've just received a new trailer for upcoming minigame compilation Guiness World Records: The Video Game. It was kind of a sleeper hit for this blogger at E3. Despite it being a minigame compilation, which usually elicits a rolling of the eyes, it managed to impress through some fun scenarios and tight controls. [Via press release]

Aside from knowing the game exists, I didn't have anything else to go on when I came across Guinness World Records: The Videogame at my closed-door session in the back of the Warner Bros. meeting room at E3. When the game was revealed, I figured it would just be another cookie-cutter mini-game compilation that didn't hold much value. Actually, I was wrong, as Guiness World Records is a pretty fun title.

Underachievers can now take to the Wii in an effort to impress their friends with virtual accomplishments. TT Games has announced Guinness World Records: The Videogame (really? a game?) for the Wii and DS, so there's no reason for you not to be included in the book that features a new holographic cover every year. It's full of mini-games, of course, and features some of the most popular records -- like growing the longest fingernails, and eating a jumbo jet. Sounds ... gross. World Records enables players to compete in such prestigious events via "accessible game mechanics." No clue what these actually are, but if it involves sitting around for 50 years growing long fingernails, then at least it'll score highly for longevity. It's released in Q3 2008, if you can wait that long to participate in the "most remarkable activities in the world."[Via press release]

Hideo Kojima's has been in London this week, not just for the signing of pre-release MGS4 sleeves at HMV Oxford Street, but also to pick up a couple of Guinness World Record certificates. Kojima will be featured in the new Guinness World Records: Gamer's Edition 2008 with two achievements to his name. First, for creating Metal Gear Solid 2, the best selling stealth game on the PS2 to date. His second achievement is for inventing stealth games in the first place with Metal Gear Solid 1 on the original PlayStation. Two prestigious awards, indeed. The Guinness World Records: Gamer's Edition 2008 is on shelves now.[Via Press Release]

Finally getting the street cred that its creators have so long desired, the multi-platform, distributed computing network known as Folding@Home is to be recognized by Guinness World Records. According to the group, the network is now the most powerful distributed computing cluster in the world. The system, which utilizes the power of more than 670,000 PS3s, PCs, and lawnmower motors to crunch data, has overall computational capabilities greater than a petaflop (which is a ton of flops). The linked consoles tackle a number of tasks, and scientists harnessing the network's power are able to study complex medical problems -- such as Parkinson's and Alzheimer's -- much more quickly. Vijay Pande, Associate Professor of Chemistry at Stanford University and head of the Folding@home project says, "Without them [the Folding@Home users] we would not be able to make the advancements we have made in our studies of several different diseases." Now that Guinness has recognized the system, it can proudly stand next to luminaries such as the man with the longest fingernails, and fastest land animal.
