So, today you have two flavors to choose from for your weekly Xbox Live Arcade fix. In the retro side of things, you've got Gyruss, complete with updated 3D rendered graphics, multiplayer (co-op and versus) over Xbox Live, coming in at a cool 400 MS Points. On the other side you've got 3D Ultra MiniGolf Adventures, which features 36 holes, 4 player support over Live, and even a nifty course editor to mix things up with, and that one runs you 800 points. So, not that we're expecting Microsoft to make a habit out of it (yet), but what do you think about having dual releases, with one retro and one "new" game available on the same day?Read: GyrussRead: 3D Ultra MiniGolf Adventures

  • This Wednesday: XBLA brings Gyruss, Minigolf Adventures, end of world

You'll need to hang on to something for this. When Wednesday arrives, it will bring with it an unstoppable, apocalyptic event that will inevitably tear the very fabric of existence apart and toss a stick of dynamite into the resulting hole. On April 18 at 9AM GMT (2AM PDT), Xbox Live Arcade will receive two new titles. Simultaneously, at the same time, and concurrently! The beast of Armageddon, hideously comprised of both rancid flesh and newborn baby skin, will roll onto the digital shore and spew forth Konami's old-school shooter, Gyruss, and Sierra Online's take on very small Golf, 3-D Ultra MiniGolf Adventures. Coupling the old with the new(er) seems like an excellent strategy to adopt for future release days. Why, it's only matched in sheer brilliance by the concept of releasing more than one game per week. At the rate things move in the gaming world, it's surprising how long it took us to get to the end of it. %Gallery-2596%If you want to shoot things in space (who are coming to kill you, by the way) this week, expect to pay 400 MS points ($5). %Gallery-2599%If swinging clubs is more your thing, be prepared to set aside 800 MS points ($10). And if you want to do both, well, you can!

The blokes over at Gamerscoreblog just confirmed that 3D Ultra MiniGolf Adventures and Gyruss will both be hitting Xbox Live Arcade this coming Wednesday. They also confirmed our (sound) predictions about the price, with MiniGolf coming in at 800 Microsoft Points and Gyruss at half that, which is standard issue for retro remakes. You can also check out the flickr sets for both games to take a look at their screenshots. So, we asked you before, which of these two are you the most interested in?

Update: This has since been confirmed by Gamerscoreblog.CVG is getting the word out that this Wednesday may be a first for Xbox Live Arcade. They're saying that we'll not only be getting one, but two Arcade titles available for download. Previously rumored Gyruss will be giving gamers their retro fix, as well as (Hyper) Ultra 3D Minigolf Adventures (Mega Xtreme to The MAXX). Our guess is that Minigolf will run you about 800 MS Points and Gyruss will be 400. That all being said, we're still going to slap the "Rumor" tag on this one until we get more information, as two titles in one week is currently unprecedented. Should this happen to follow through, though, which game would you plan on picking up, if not both?[Via GameStooge]

  • Arcade classic Gyruss to blow Xbox Live Arcade streak

Gyruss is listed on Konami's website as a March 2007 Xbox Live Arcade release. We're sure that a cursory, even perfunctory, glance at your word-of-the-day desk calendar will remind you that there's only one more Wednesday in store for March, leaving little room for interpretation here.Just when we were getting used to this -- Alien Hominid HD, followed by Worms, followed by Konami's coin-op classic Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (with co-op multiplayer!), and then today's Castlevania: Symphony of the Night -- Gyruss comes along and spoils our fun. Maybe they want to pile all the Konami offerings in a row, or maybe they didn't want us to get too used to the streak of desirable titles; either way Gyruss is launching us back to the dark times of back to back releases of Root Beer Tapper and Paperboy. • Gyruss coming to XBLA next week?

While we knew of Gyruss' existence in the Xbox Live Arcade line-up, and that it would arrive sometime in the future. We didn't know when "soon" meant back in October, but according to Konami's XBLA page, it comes out just shy of half a year. Just underneath Castlevania: SOTN, Gyruss can be found to have a March 2007 release. That pretty much narrows it down to March 28th. We can't tell if Konami knows something we don't, or if it still is in Microsoft's hands with certification, but we hope to hear more on this soon. The game's details also reveal the online co-op and versus modes that will be available when the title does actually release. Whether that's next week or not, we'll just have to wait and see. You down for some co-op shoot 'em up, or would you rather have something else for the final Wednesday of March?[Via GameStooge]

  • XBLA, Contra and Gyruss coming "soon"

There's a small section devoted to Xbox Live Arcade in the latest issue of Konami's newsletter -- creatively titled, "Konami News". In the newsletter, Konami announces that both Contra and Gyruss are coming "soon." How soon is soon? We don't know, but there are ten more Xbox Live Arcade Wednesdays this year, and we can only hope that these games are destined for two of them. (Small Arms first, please.)The article contains some previously unreleased info on both games. Contra will feature updated graphics and sounds, online multiplayer (!), and leaderboards. But does it have "the code?!" That's all we want to know. Gyruss will feature updated graphics, new versus and co-op modes, and leaderboards. We have to hand it to Konami for actually upgrading its old arcade games for XBLA. That's the kind of thing more developers should do -- unlike Namco, who actually removed multiplayer from games like Pac-Man and Galaga. So, are you excited for Contra? Any other Konami games you'd like to see resurrected?[Thanks, J.Goodwin]

Yesterday we mentioned that an new franchise was to be announced for XBLA sometime during all this TGS/X06 hullballoo. We even asked all of you for your best guess. Well, it looks like we got our anwer sooner rather than later, and the answer will most likely be a disappointment to many. In total, four new franchises have been announced, and they are: Gyruss New Rally-X Rush'n Attack Yie Ar Kung Fu (Japan only) While these games are a welcome addition (especially Rush'n Attack), it falls well short of our hope for original content -- or even an XBLA specific entry to a classic franchise. We hold out hope that a real contender will emerge before all is said and done. But, on to business. We said we'd name drop whoever guessed right and ... oh, wait ... nobody got it. In that case, we'll just give the Perv of the Week Award® to reader, AOE, for suggesting Boon-Ga Boon-Ga "complete with custom controller." Sick, man. Tucked in Microsoft's TGS press release announcing 1080p support and Japanese HD-DVD info, was a short bit on Xbox Live Arcade's presence at TGS. They revealed the following list of Konami and Namco Bandai titles: Contra Gyruss (previously unannounced) Dig Dug Track & Field New Rally-X (previously unannounced) Rush'n Attack (previously unannounced) Ms. Pac-Man Yie Ar Kung Fu: a "Japan-exclusive Xbox Live Arcade game" and "one of the very first fighting games" will be released in 2007 Some of these we've known about, others we've seen before (Contra was at Microsoft's E3 event, and, oh yeah, it's also ingrained in our consciousness), but there are some interesting additions, including a Japan-exclusive title. Our question is, why is Konami wasting their time with some of these games when all we want are those classic Konami beat 'em ups? You're sitting on a gold mine Konami! Seriously, you're sitting on it. Get up and let us at it.
