Some of us express our &uuml;ber-geeky tendencies by building <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/19/tron-lightcycle-case-mod-is-totally-awesome-100-percent-3d/"><em>Tron</em> lightcycle case mods</a>, or <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/10/digidrench-whets-our-appetite-for-water-based-arduino-adventures/">playing with Arduino</a>. While others tend to err on the side of... insanity. MIT student Tyler Christensen would probably fall into that latter category, most recently strapping a tesla coil (and associated capacitors) to his head. The result is seriously impressive, and no animals (or humans) were harmed in the making of his costume -- though the DRSSTC (Dual Resonant Solid State Tesla Coil) didn't fare so well, considering that it "blew up" the day before the holiday weekend. Christensen still had a chance to test the contraption on camera before the incident, however, walking around town while zapping the sky to the tune of the <em>Harry Potter</em> theme song -- a seemingly appropriate selection. Check it out in the video after the break.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/15/mit-student-creates-tesla-coil-musical-hat-for-halloween-surviv/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>MIT student creates tesla coil musical hat for Halloween, survives</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/15/mit-student-creates-tesla-coil-musical-hat-for-halloween-surviv/">MIT student creates tesla coil musical hat for Halloween, survives</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 15 Nov 2011 00:27:00 EST. Sure, we may have had our official Halloween costume contest on October's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/25/the-engadget-show-026-a-visit-from-intel-a-trip-to-new-york/">Engadget Show</a>, but who are we to deprive you the reader of taking part in the spooky holiday fun? We've asked everyone to send in their geeky costumes and got some great responses, from the above playable Game Boy, to Barf from <em>Spaceballs</em>, to the requisite Vulcan, to a handful of Steve Jobses. Check out some of our favorites after the break, and continue to send them along to tips [at] engadget [dot] com.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/engadget-readers-halloween-costumes/">Engadget readers' Halloween costumes</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/engadget-readers-halloween-costumes/#4571290"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/10/engadget-halloween-costume-2011-1-14_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/engadget-readers-halloween-costumes/#4571294"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/10/engadget-halloween-costume-2011-4_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/engadget-readers-halloween-costumes/#4571297"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/10/engadget-halloween-costume-2011-7_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/engadget-readers-halloween-costumes/#4571298"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/10/engadget-halloween-costume-2011-8_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/engadget-readers-halloween-costumes/#4571303"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/10/engadget-halloween-costume-2011-13_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div></div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/31/your-geekiest-halloween-costumes/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Your geekiest Halloween costumes</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/31/your-geekiest-halloween-costumes/">Your geekiest Halloween costumes</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 31 Oct 2011 15:03:00 EST. The world of green tech presented us with some neat tricks and eco-treats this week from this <a href="http://inhabitat.com/3d-printers-can-help-solve-hermit-crab-shell-shortage-by-printing-custom-replacements/"> plan to 3D print new shells for homeless hermit crabs </a>to this handy <a href="http://inhabitat.com/nyc/the-leafsnap-app-helps-you-identify-every-tree-in-nyc/">LeafSnap app</a> that helps you identify all different kinds of fall foliage to an energy-efficient <a href="http://inhabitat.com/ufo-hotel-room-the-newest-suite-at-the-treehotel-is-shaped-like-a-flying-saucer/">UFO hotel room</a>, which recently "landed" in the forests of Sweden. Speaking of spaceships, we also spotted this <a href="http://www.inhabitots.com/star-trek-enterprise-feeding-system-is-out-of-this-world/">Star Trek Enterprise feeding system for babies</a> (you're never too young to live long and prosper) as well as plans for a massive <a href="http://inhabitat.com/airborne-metro-a-giant-nuclear-powered-airport-that-flies-3000-passengers-across-the-sky/">nuclear-powered airport/airplane</a> that could fly as many as 3,000 passengers through the sky, and Philips showed off its eerie and futuristic<a href="http://inhabitat.com/philips-microbial-home-design-features-fascinating-eco-innovations-like-bacteria-powered-lamps/"> bacteria-powered lamps</a>. In honor of All Hallow's Eve, we rounded up the <a href="http://inhabitat.com/top-6-creepiest-buildings-for-a-frightful-halloween/">top six creepiest buildings of all time</a> as well as <a href="http://inhabitat.com/6-creepy-churches-made-of-bones/">six spooky churches made of bones</a>. And just in case you missed the craziest Halloween story of the week, check these photos of a trio of <a href="http://inhabitat.com/nyc/photos-ray-villafane-carves-the-worlds-largest-pumpkin-into-an-intricate-spine-tinglingly-sculpture/">ghastly zombies bursting out of the world's largest pumpkin's hell, er, shell</a>.<br />
<br />
On the green transportation front, we took the <a href="http://inhabitat.com/test-drive-inhabitat-zips-around-town-in-the-manual-transmission-honda-crz-sport-hybrid/">Honda CR-V hybrid for a spin</a> and came across news that <a href="http://inhabitat.com/good-news-tesla-announces-it-will-reintroduce-a-redesigned-roadster-in-2014/">Tesla will reintroduce its sexy roadster</a> in 2014. We also saw that GM is working on <a href="http://inhabitat.com/future-gm-vehicles-could-drop-drivers-off-at-destination-and-park-themselves/">cars that could drop drivers off at their destinations</a> and even park themselves, and the auto giant impressed us even further by joining Ford and Chrysler, who are working closely with engineering students from the University of Michigan Solar Car Team to create <a href="http://inhabitat.com/detroit-3-automakers-partner-with-u-m-solar-car-team-to-create-cars-of-the-future/">viable solar-powered cars for the future</a>. But if you can't wait that long, this <a href="http://inhabitat.com/solarships-solar-cargo-helium-plane-is-a-futuristic-airship-that-actually-exists/">Solarship is a blimp-like solar-powered airship</a> that actually exists today.<br />
<br />
In tech news, Facebook announced that they'll be building a <a href="http://inhabitat.com/facebooks-fancy-new-server-farm-will-be-cooled-naturally-by-arctic-air/">fancy new server farm</a> in the Arctic. And speaking of cold weather, we also spotted where this clever <a href="http://www.ecouterre.com/studio-nls-umbrella-coat-offers-a-hands-free-solution-for-rainy-days/">Umbrella coat</a> that has a handy umbrella instead of a hood - perfect for rainy fall days. A new study showing that <a href="http://www.inhabitots.com/turn-it-off-tv-is-officially-harmful-to-children-under-two-says-aap/">TV is officially harmful to children under two</a> confirmed some of our suspicions and we also saw news of a judge who ruled that <a href="http://www.inhabitots.com/judge-blocks-cell-phone-warnings-in-san-francisco/">cell phone warnings be blocked</a> in San Francisco.<br />
<br />

We had a great time combing through your <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/11/photoshop-contest-send-us-your-best-most-terrifying-frankenga/">Frankengadget mash-ups</a>, and while there were many worthy submissions, we sadly had to narrow it down to just five. Our submission deadline has since passed, but now the real fun begins -- it's time to vote! Scroll through the gallery at the bottom of this post, then make your pick in the poll below, selecting just one winner (you can use the thumbs above as your guide). Your top selection's creator will get to take home their very own copy of Adobe Creative Suite 5.5. Voting closes at 12PM ET on Friday, and the winner will be announced on the Engadget Show <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/11/the-engadget-show-returns-friday-october-21st-win-a-ticket-t/">later that evening</a>, so stay tuned!<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/19/poll-vote-for-your-favorite-frankengadget/#poll70022">View Poll</a></p><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/frankengadget-finalists/">Frankengadget Finalists</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/frankengadget-finalists/#4540430"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/10/2011frankengadget-2-multiboot_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/frankengadget-finalists/#4540432"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/10/2011frankengadget-5-awesomegadget_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/frankengadget-finalists/#4540434"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/10/2011frankengadget-9-amonsterisborn_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/frankengadget-finalists/#4540431"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/10/2011frankengadget-3-ilcphone_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/frankengadget-finalists/#4540433"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/10/2011frankengadget-6-ibeastsound_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/19/poll-vote-for-your-favorite-frankengadget/">Poll: Vote for your favorite Frankengadget!</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 19 Oct 2011 18:00:00 EST. We know, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Halloween/">Halloween</a> is <i>so</i> last month, but with a costume like this... who cares? Dan Liuzzi's "I am 8-Bit" headgear was crafted from insulation foam, joint compound, a cardboard box, glue, some gesso spray and acrylic paint. Even Dan himself calls the project "pretty amateur stuff," noting that it took him around two to three weeks to complete. You've got a bright future in that face, Dan -- we can just <i>feel it</i>.<br />

Some people buy a costume for Halloween. Others piece one together from scratch. Michael Colton makes six-foot-tall flying ghost helicopters that chase children down the street. He pieced this one together from some off-the-shelf R/C <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/quadrocopter/">quadrocopter </a>parts mounted to a simple aluminum frame, all held together with zip-ties and covered with an old bedsheet. He calls it Mr. T, and we pity the fool who doesn't watch it in action after the break, staged as the performance might be.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/10/31/man-celebrates-halloween-with-flying-ghost-helicopter-video/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Man celebrates Halloween with flying ghost helicopter (video)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/10/31/man-celebrates-halloween-with-flying-ghost-helicopter-video/">Man celebrates Halloween with flying ghost helicopter (video)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Sun, 31 Oct 2010 23:11:00 EST. We can't all have heads as amazing as Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo, but this holiday season we can have pumpkins that are every bit as blinky. Mike Szczys has posted a detailed walkthrough of how to create the above Jack-o-creation at <em>Hack a Day</em>, which features a 5 x 14 matrix of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/led">LEDs</a> on the front that can be programmed to light up in various ways, like the Knight Rider sweep or to simply scroll the message "HAPPY HALLOWEEN." That's shown in the video below, but hopefully version 2.0 can manage the tricks displayed in the second embed that's also waiting for you after the break.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/10/28/led-pumpkin-would-be-perfect-for-your-next-sleepy-hollow-dance-p/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>LED pumpkin would be perfect for your next Sleepy Hollow dance party (video)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/10/28/led-pumpkin-would-be-perfect-for-your-next-sleepy-hollow-dance-p/">LED pumpkin would be perfect for your next Sleepy Hollow dance party (video)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 28 Oct 2010 11:15:00 EST. <div style="text-align: left;">Looking for a little inspiration for your Halloween costume? Then you might not want to read any further, as you'll likely only find yourself struggling to match the Samus Aran costume that 11-year old Joseph DeRose and his father are building. That costume apparently only consists of an arm cannon at the moment, but it's certainly an impressive arm cannon -- it packs an array of LED lights with various settings (controlled by an <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/arduino">Arduino</a>, naturally), not to mention an assortment of sound effects from the Metroid games. Those not concerned about being upstaged can check out a video of the build process after the break.</div>

<strong>Update:</strong> Due to a technical issue, we won't be livestreaming the show tonight.<br />
<br />
<strong>Update 2: </strong>Or maybe we will! We appear to have worked out some of the issues, so <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/10/23/the-engadget-show-live-with-microsofts-aaron-woodman-windows/">head on down</a>!<br />
<br />
The Engadget Show is sponsored by Sprint, and will take place at the <a href="http://thetimescenter.com/">Times Center</a>, part of The New York Times Building in the heart of New York City at 41st St. between 7th and 8th Avenues (see map after the break). Tickets are -- as always -- free to anyone who would like to attend, but seating is limited, and tickets will be <strong>first come, first served</strong>... so get there early! Here's the updated info on our <strong>new ticketing policy</strong> that you need to know:<br />

    <li>Ticketing will begin at the Times Center at <strong>2:00PM</strong> <strong>today</strong>, Saturday October 23rd, doors will open for seating at 5:45PM, and the show begins at 6:30PM</li>
    <li>We now have <strong>assigned seating</strong>, so the first people to get their tickets -- and the Sprint text-to-win winners (see below) -- will get priority seating. This also means that once you get a ticket, your seat is guaranteed -- <strong>you won't have to get back in line</strong> to get a good seat.</li>
    <li><strong>We still had plenty of tickets left over</strong> at the last taping, so just because it's 5:00pm and you finally finished Halo: Reach doesn't mean you won't get a seat at the show -- so get your butt up to the Times Center <strong>this evening!</strong></li>
    <li>Ticketing will continue until all tickets are given away</li>
    <li>You cannot collect tickets for friends or family -- anyone who would like to come must be present to get a ticket</li>

We're expecting to get our grubby paws on an <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/14/samsung-nx100-mirrorless-camera-gets-official-14-6mp-i-functio/">NX100</a> later today for some longer-term testing, but for now, we wanted to go ahead and get you our initial impressions after handling the new mirrorless compact for a couple of minutes following Samsung's Photokina 2010 press event. The device itself is far smaller than the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/NX10/">NX10</a> of last year, but it's still decidedly solid, if not a touch thick. The 20mm pancake lens on the model we tested was well built, and the i-Function capabilities were downright impressive. It took us a tick to grok how it works, but a good 30 seconds of learning presented us with loads of on-the-fly flexibility. You simply tap the i-Function button with your right hand in order to select what type of setting you'd like to change (exposure, ISO, shutter speed, etc.), and then rotate the wheel on the lens in either direction in order to change the value. <br />
<br />
Despite our doubts, it actually worked beautifully, and now we're eager to see this type of technology on even more cameras (even if its reserved for Samsung's range). The 3-inch AMOLED on the rear was also stunning, sharp and bright, and the whole thing fit in our hands well. We're still fond of our DSLR for most things, but we could totally see a unit like this making the most sense for amateurs who aren't fond of lugging around something so gigantic. Ergonomics, design and i-Function? All were stellar -- here's hoping the image and video quality meet those same standards, and we'll be bringing you those opinions just as soon as we can form them. Video's after the break, if you're thirsty for more. <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/samsung-nx100-hands-on-at-photokina-2010/">Samsung NX100 hands-on at Photokina 2010</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/samsung-nx100-hands-on-at-photokina-2010/#3380513"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/09/samsung-nx100-handson-photokina0510-1284984889_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/samsung-nx100-hands-on-at-photokina-2010/#3380514"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/09/samsung-nx100-handson-photokina0508-1284984890_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/samsung-nx100-hands-on-at-photokina-2010/#3380515"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/09/samsung-nx100-handson-photokina0507-1284984891_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/samsung-nx100-hands-on-at-photokina-2010/#3380516"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/09/samsung-nx100-handson-photokina0506-1284984892_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/samsung-nx100-hands-on-at-photokina-2010/#3380517"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/09/samsung-nx100-handson-photokina0505-1284984893_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div> <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/samsung-nx100-launch-event-at-photokina-2010/">Samsung NX100 launch event at Photokina 2010</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/samsung-nx100-launch-event-at-photokina-2010/#3380420"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/09/samsung-nx100-press-event-20100483_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/samsung-nx100-launch-event-at-photokina-2010/#3380421"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/09/samsung-nx100-press-event-20100482_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/samsung-nx100-launch-event-at-photokina-2010/#3380422"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/09/samsung-nx100-press-event-20100481_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/samsung-nx100-launch-event-at-photokina-2010/#3380423"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/09/samsung-nx100-press-event-20100480_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/samsung-nx100-launch-event-at-photokina-2010/#3380424"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/09/samsung-nx100-press-event-20100479_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/20/samsung-nx100-hands-on-video/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Samsung NX100 hands-on (video)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/20/samsung-nx100-hands-on-video/">Samsung NX100 hands-on (video)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 20 Sep 2010 08:23:00 EST. Tired of all the DROID talk? Well, tough cookies, mister. Nilay, Paul and Josh have a lot to say on the subject, and you're just going to have to sit there and take it. Or you could skip the first 40 minutes of this week's podcast, but that's just a recipe for regret. If you do stick it out you'll be treated to some unusually candid discussion of Josh's facial hair and other more pertinent questions picked from the USTREAM discussion that will almost certainly frighten you straight.<br />

BOO! It's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/halloween">Halloween</a> and it's also a Saturday, so let's not hear any pathetic excuses for not carving <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/pumpkin">pumpkins</a>. While we're no experts, we've got a few tips for making your jack-o'-lanterns better looking and more unique:<br />
<ul>
    <li>Always mark where you're carving first instead of freestyling, especially for the lid. Once the knife's in there's nothing you can do about it.</li>
    <li>Want an accurate carving? Draw or print your pattern on paper first and then stick it on the pumpkin, so that you can use a pin to punch an outline.</li>
    <li>Use a scalpel. Seriously, it's so much better than kitchen knives.</li>
    <li>Be creative: consider using a variety of carving depths instead of just cutting out holes. It's best to start off with the darkest areas so that you know where the threshold is. If it's too shallow you can always scrape the trench.</li>
    <li>Don't use candles -- they don't last and aren't safe for the kids and animals; many LED candles have a convincing flickering glow, so try those. Alternatively, why not convert a cheap <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/solar/">solar</a> garden light into a lid for your jack-o'-lantern? Or go <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/ben+heck">Ben-Heck</a> and try the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2006/10/21/its-the-great-robotic-overlords-charlie-brown-make-a-cylon-ja/">Cylon mod</a>?</li>
    <li>Keep the seeds for roasting -- they make a good snack.</li>
</ul>
Feel free to refer to our gallery for the whole process. You know, after getting beat up last year at the Engadget HQ Halloween party for daring to <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2005/11/03/a-ridiculous-number-of-ipod-costumes/">dress up as an iPod</a>, we're ready to exact a little bit of revenge with this most excellent robot mask idea. The idea is simple enough: it simply pairs the MouthOff app with a cardboard box and tinfoil, but the results speak (and lip sync) for themselves. Check out the video how-to after the break.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/09/08/diy-robot-mask-uses-iphone-display-to-lip-sync-your-drunken-hall/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>DIY robot mask uses iPhone display to lip sync your drunken Halloween slurrings</em></a></p><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/cellphones/" rel="tag">Cellphones</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/wearables/" rel="tag">Wearables</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/09/08/diy-robot-mask-uses-iphone-display-to-lip-sync-your-drunken-hall/">DIY robot mask uses iPhone display to lip sync your drunken Halloween slurrings</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 08 Sep 2009 10:25:00 EST. While Sony's $400 <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/rolly">Rolly</a> never made much sense as a roll-about musical robot, at least Aldebaran Robotics' <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/nao">Nao</a> could walk upright and play a little football. Now the two have come together to battle on the dance floor. The 91 second video posted after the break is about 70 seconds too long, but consider this your moment of Zen for the day. Bonus points for any readers who re-enact this for Halloween.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/08/26/video-sony-rolly-vs-nao-in-epic-robot-dance-off/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Video: Sony Rolly vs Nao in epic robot dance off</em></a></p><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/robots/" rel="tag">Robots</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/08/26/video-sony-rolly-vs-nao-in-epic-robot-dance-off/">Video: Sony Rolly vs Nao in epic robot dance off</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 26 Aug 2009 05:40:00 EST. We've always thought our basement full of old Newtons and Amiga machines was pretty spooky, but we'd admit that we've been one-upped by Pennsylvania's Halloween Park, which built an entire haunted mansion using off-the-shelf HAI home automation equipment. Designed by Digital Panacea, the system is "run by typical motion detectors, contacts, resets, and timers," which trigger spooky sound effects and mechanical effects, including a leaping ghost nicknamed Dead Fred. That's way more interesting than the usual home-automation setup, we'd say -- any of you planning on re-rigging your systems at home before the kiddies come by?<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/household/" rel="tag">Household</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/31/haunted-house-run-using-home-automation-gear/">Haunted house run using home automation gear</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 31 Oct 2008 13:01:00 EST. <div align="left">Pumpkins outfitted with LEDs are certainly all <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2006/10/21/its-the-great-robotic-overlords-charlie-brown-make-a-cylon-ja/">well and good</a>, but the ever-versatile <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/arduino">Arduino</a> platform has now upped the Jack O' Lantern modding possibilities considerably, and MAKE's Marc de Vinck looks to have made a decent stab at things with this immodestly dubbed "scariest pumpkin ever." To help it snag that title, de Vinck did away with the usual spooky halloween sound effects and instead opted for a <em>car horn</em>, which lets out a blast whenever someone presses the impossible to resist red button. That, obviously, presents a number of problems, and MAKE warns not to leave the pumpkin unattended, or let someone press their ear up against it. Or, if you're not quite ready to tackle the project yourself, you can simply get a taste of it at a slightly more tolerable level by checking out the video after the break.</div>

Look, we know good and well your <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Halloween/">Halloween</a> night is already booked solid, but that's not to say you can't start getting spooked out a few days beforehand. HDNet Movies is looking to set the tone this year by debuting the horror film <em>Splinter</em> two days prior to its theatrical release. The flick is the feature film debut from British director Toby Wilkins, and the press release even describes it as "an exhilarating ride of jolts and laughs, and a throw back to the classic creature features of the early '70s and '80s." Sounds like the perfect way to spend an 8:00PM time slot on October 29th, yeah?<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/hdnet/" rel="tag">HDNet</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/new-content/" rel="tag">New content</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/23/hdnet-movies-debuting-splinter-to-get-you-in-the-halloween-spiri/">HDNet Movies debuting Splinter to get you in the Halloween spirit</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 23 Oct 2008 20:07:00 EST. With Halloween just around the bend, Mark Gervais' creation is just too timely too ignore. Originally conceived around this time last year, the Hallowindow projector rig turns your peaceful, totally plain home into a nightmarish haunted house with just a beamer, a white sheet, a source, some speakers and Mark's own animation DVD. All's that left for you to do is hop on past the break for a pictorial setup guide and pick up the Hallowindow DVD from the read link. Oh, and before you pass this off as just a gimmick, give the video (also waiting after the break) a look. It's spooky, we tell ya.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/16/hallowindow-projector-rig-turns-your-home-into-a-haunted-house/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Hallowindow projector rig turns your home into a haunted house</em></a></p><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/diy/" rel="tag">DIY</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/misc/" rel="tag">Misc</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/displays/" rel="tag">Displays</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/projector/" rel="tag">Projector</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/16/hallowindow-projector-rig-turns-your-home-into-a-haunted-house/">Hallowindow projector rig turns your home into a haunted house</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 16 Oct 2008 13:24:00 EST. Good thing Halloween is months away. You'll need that time to hone your sewing skills in the noble quest to create a Daft Punk suit of your very own. <em>Instructables</em> has everything you need (except the electroluminescent wire, soldering iron, heat gun, and pleather tracksuit) to build an EL suit worthy of electronic celebration. Best of all, your tutor for the course is none other than the suits' creator for the duo's 2007 tour. Now get moving humans, it's time to let the robots rock the party.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.hacknmod.com/displayMOD.php?hack=1526">Hack n Mod</a>]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/wearables/" rel="tag">Wearables</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/06/23/your-daft-punk-homework-create-your-own-el-suit/">Daft Punk Homework: create your own EL suit</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 23 Jun 2008 01:52:00 EST. Enter Morgui, the University of Reading-based robot that has been around for some time, but is just now getting the credit a bizarre skull that follows humans around should. The creation, which consists of a disembodied head, oversized blue eyes, and a classically evil grin, has been officially banned from testing around anyone under the age of 18 (permission notwithstanding) by the school's ethics and research committee, leaving the "Magic Ghost" to spook only mature audiences from here on out. Mo, as it's so aptly nicknamed, sports a metal head, the ability to detect visual / auditory cues, and sensors for radar, infrared, and ultrasonic detection as well, but oddly enough, it cannot detect human emotion, so you better not count on this fellow to have sympathy on your soul when you're screeching. The purpose of the machine is to judge how "people react to robots," and when the bot just so happens to lack any form of facial covering beyond a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2004/11/02/prepare-to-be-terminated-the-kibertron/">skeletal structure</a>, we're sure the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2005/03/15/giant-spiderbot-not-your-average-john-deere-offering/">reactions</a> are quite noticeable.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.collisiondetection.net/mt/archives/2007/01/robot_deemed_to.html">CollisionDetection</a>]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/robots/" rel="tag">Robots</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/01/16/universitys-morgui-robot-deemed-too-scary-for-kids/">University's Morgui robot deemed too scary for kids</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 16 Jan 2007 10:05:00 EST. If you happen to have one of them shiny new <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2006/09/12/hands-on-with-the-2g-ipod-nano-rainbow/">2G iPod nanos</a>, and you happen to have a penchant for the occult, and you're looking for a new party trick to impress your friends with while dressed in your gadgety-themed <a href="http://displays.engadget.com/2006/10/27/youre-finishing-your-gadgety-halloween-costume-this-weekend-ri/">costume</a> that you're wearing to that hot Halloween party, well, right now -- fear not, Engadget is here to keep you on the techno-supernatural cutting edge. Those creative friends of ours at <em>CNET UK</em> turned their iPod into a Ouija board, remarking on the similarities between the Click Wheel alphabet-search system and an analog board. <em>CNET UK</em>'s ghost (named "Brad") communicated through various tunes on the iPod, clearly the medium of choice for today's hip 21st century spirit. Now if you do try this at home or are participating in other Halloween festivities, make sure to keep it fun and safe for all involved -- awakening long dead spirits can ruin somebody's night. You do want to be around to read Engadget on <em>D&iacute;a de los Muertos</em>, don't you?<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.uberreview.com/2006/10/iouija-turning-your-ipod-into-a-ouija-board.htm/">The Uber-Review</a>]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/portableaudio/" rel="tag">Portable Audio</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2006/11/01/how-to-turn-your-2g-ipod-nano-into-a-ouija-board/">How to turn your 2G iPod nano into a Ouija board</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 01 Nov 2006 02:51:00 EST. Sure, we've got <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2005/10/11/the-doublespace-stove-and-easy-chair/">plenty</a> of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2005/08/24/ijoy-zipconnect-massage-chair-plays-tunes/">options</a> to <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2006/02/03/herman-miller-aeron-chaise-by-sietze-kalkwijk/">sit in</a> when it comes to <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2006/08/31/the-irocker-chair-with-built-in-ipod-dock/">rewarding</a> yourself, but what if you've got a mischievous trick-or-treater that really needs some <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2006/05/08/electricity-may-cause-cancer-leukaemia-depression-etc/">payback</a> for stiffing you in the candy department? Enter Lil' Sparky, the miniaturized (albeit potent) electric chair, handcrafted to scare the living daylights out of anything or anyone who dares to place its behind in it. Rob Cruickshank has officially "put the cute in electrocute" by wiring up a wooden electric chair that's powered by a single 9-volt battery and can deliver the juice to the unlucky participant with just the flip of a toggle switch. While we certainly don't condone the act of channeling unabated voltage through anybody's bones, be sure to <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fWtKr70TECI">peep the video</a> of the electrifying chair in all its sizzling glory just in case the need presents itself. <br /><br /> [Via <a href="http://www.boingboing.net/2006/10/29/lil_sparky_miniature.html">BoingBoing</a>]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/gadgets/" rel="tag">Misc. Charlie would be better off trying to kick that football than tracking down this jack-o-lantern. The guys at Evil Mad Scientist Laboratories put their l33t stenciling, carving and LED wiring skills into this Cylon Centurion n&eacute;e pumpkin, and naturally posted all the info necessary to create your own. This stacks up pretty well against the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2005/10/27/some-seasonal-convergence-the-pumpkin-pc/">pumpkin PC</a> and even the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2005/10/24/the-engadget-pumpkin/">Engadget pumpkin</a>. But for truly evil and mad status, we'd prefer a fruit-based rendering of Number Six, destined to be destroyed October 31st by <strike>Starbuck</strike> <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2005/10/27/some-seasonal-convergence-the-pumpkin-pc/">Power Mac </a>-- only to download, re-emerge next Halloween and continue its plan of human genocide through sweet, pie-based deliciousness. Frak.<br />
