Hans Zimmer is producer on the soundtrack for Beyond: Two Souls, with Assassin's Creed 3 composer Lorne Balfe at the helm. Balfe and Zimmer collaborate frequently, including on films such as Inception and Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows. Beyond creator David Cage confirmed the music news at Gamescom, adding that the soundtrack is two hours of full orchestral music. "We believe that with the addition of Ellen Page, Willem Dafoe, and now Hans Zimmer with the soundtrack – we were really looking for the best, most talented people out there to create the emotion in Beyond, and we have a beautiful soundtrack in the game," Cage said. During that panel, Cage revealed multiplayer for Beyond, including a free app that turns touchscreen devices into controllers, intended to make the AAA game less intimidating to casual players.

Look, we were sure your a capella version of "Microphone Assassin" would be both topical and well-delivered, but in the end the gig for voice of Assassin's Creed: Revelations' theme song didn't go to you. It went to Madeline, who just may have the coolest job at Ubisoft now -- aside from the guy who tests the wrist blades, of course. To ask Ubisoft, Madeline's voice held a quality that "inspired and moved us all." You can listen to her winning performance by heading on over to the UJAM site.

  • You could sing the Assassin's Creed: Revelations theme (seriously)

Upon hearing about Ubisoft's singing contest for this November's Assassin's Creed: Revelations launch, we've been furiously putting ink to paper in an effort to cage all of our wild lyrical genius. Apparently, that is all for naught, as the contest doesn't actually seek lyrics to go with our symphonic collective voice, but rather one especially melodious vocalist for non-lyrical singing. Rats! AC: R composer Lorne Balfe and general composer dude Hans Zimmer explain the contest in the video. They are looking for folks to put vocals to the game's theme song (available here), and to then get on Facebook for some Marketing 2.0. After reaching the top 20 "Liked" versions of the theme on Facebook, you'll enter the second round, where a handful of musicians (including Zimmer and Balfe, among others) will pick the creme de la creme. Finally, if you're chosen, you get to record your version of the theme, get credits in the game and the soundtrack, and you'll be "awarded" a prize of $1,000. The only question we have now is this: How much would it cost to pay a professional vocalist to record the theme? Regardless, potential entrants have until 8:00PM PST on September 19 to enter, giving you just under two weeks to get crackin'. So, uh, get crackin'!

While you might not recognize, let alone be able to pronounce, the names behind the Crysis 2 score -- Borislav Slavov and Tilman Sillescu, anyone? -- EA's got one that might ring a bell: Hans Zimmer. The Hans has contributed "part of the dramatic score" for Crytek's sequel, the publisher announced today, squeezing in one last plug before the game and soundtrack are released next week. You can sample the introductory track in the audio clip below -- or do it the right way: Wait until next week when you can get the full soundtrack on your iPod, squeeze into a body suit and go bounding up 5th Avenue.

Sure, Modern Warfare 2's multiplayer mode has already sucked you in, but just imagine what would happen if you added an invigorating soundtrack to all those bullet-soaked moments? Well, guess what: The game's soundtrack composer, Hans Zimmer, recently indicated in a Facebook note that the "soundtrack album is in the works." That's right -- soon you'll be able to take the orchestrated drama from the single-player campaign and import it into a looping death march beat. But hey, at least your folks will be glad you're listening to classical music, right? [Via GamePro; image credit: quintanomedia]

  • Hans Zimmer believes in the legitimacy of games, approached MW2 as a 'novice'

Hans Zimmer may have a laundry list of feature films he contributed to on his resume, but the renowned film composer says he still had to approach his work on Modern Warfare 2 "truly as a novice." In an interview with USA Today, he speaks like a true convert. When asked about the legitimacy of games as an art form, he frankly states, "Absolutely, that we can't even question anymore." Zimmer says his first experience working on a game has, unsurprisingly, been very different than working on a film. "I had never done this before, so it was nice to sort of go at it a little fresh." Due to the length of major video games (even the shorter ones), Zimmer was forced to create considerably more music than the average project. "I never added it up [because] then I would have panicked," he admits. Looks like that "ridiculous" budget was good for something!

  • Song used in GameCube commercial spurs lawsuit

Another day, another lawsuit. This time, the big N is the one under the legal knife -- or was, since the plaintiff dropped the case a week after filing it for currently unknown reasons. Filed on June 12th and dropped on June 18th, Morgan Creek Productions felt that Nintendo's use of a song in a Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door commercial violated copyright laws, as the song was used without proper authorization. The tune in question is "You're So Cool" by Hans Zimmer, which appeared in the film True Romance. The complaint cites that Nintendo played the commercial "sometime within the past three years," which isn't very specific. This could be one possible reason why the suit was dropped, unless the companies happened to reach a quick, under-the-table settlement. In any case, you can watch the "offending" commercial above.[Via Game Politics]
