  • High School Musical: Save Twenty Bucks On It!

Not being familiar with the High School Musical movies, characters, or songs, we aren't sure if High School Musical: Sing It! has the wide appeal required to be a good party karaoke title. However, if you're a fan and have yet to pick up the Wii game (for some reason), then today's Amazon Deal of the Day is for you. That is, if you love karaoke and don't care what you're singing. The online retailer has dropped the game's price to $29.99 for today only. If you've got a Boogie microphone or other Wii-compatible USB mic, you're good to go. If you don't, you may be stuck paying the same price for the separate components that you would for the bundle. So, really, this Deal of the Day is big news for a very specific audience: super karaoke fans (who either have Boogie or are planning to buy American Idol or another mic game) who also love High School Musical. Or people who can find a cheap used Wii mic.

Since the most-watched basic cable event ever simply could not be left in standard def, DirecTV is airing High School Musical 2 in HD on August 24. The exclusive broadcast will include three high definition airings with 5.1 surround audio beginning at 6 p.m. If you're somehow unaware of the High School Musical series phenomenon, this is likely caused by not being a girl between the ages of 9-15, or somehow related to one. This preview is just a taste of what to expect when Disney Channel HD launches on DirecTV in early 2008, or when High School Musical 2 is released on Blu-ray in December. We're sure that Zac Efron, Corbin Bleu and the rest are exactly what you had in mind for your new HDTV.

We promise we won't tell anyone that you talked about High School Musical, but odds are that if you don't live under a rock inside a cave, you've been exposed to this crazy phenomenon. Maybe you've even played the new DS game. It's okay, you can tell us. We're all friends here -- and we've seen some pretty solid reviews on it!So, any rhythm game hounds thinking of giving this one a try?

  • Disney unloads a barrage of tween-centric consumer electronics

Worried your kids haven't been completely indoctrinated with the Disney universe and its philosophy of watch, buy, and buy? Well fear not, parents, because the cartoon-kingpin has got your back (and your pocketbook). If your tweens have been looking for something to do, and playing stickball just ain't cuttin' the mustard, maybe they need the $99.99 Disney Flix Video Camera (pictured), a tween-targeted digital video camera that comes bundled with Disney Director software, which lets the little rapscallions star in their own Disney movies. The company is also offering LCD TVs, such as the $299.99, 15-inch High School Musical model, which resembles a locker and sports 1024 x 768 resolution (the displays also come in Disney Princess, Hannah Montana, and Pirates of the Caribbean motifs). Additionally, the cartoon-factory is offering docks for use with your iPod, selling for $69.99, which feature alarm clocks and AM/FM tuners, though the Hannah Montana version does double duty as a guitar amp -- presumably to use with your Disney guitar. All the products will be available sometime this Fall, but good luck getting your kids to wait patiently.[Via StockHouse]

We're just going to say the editing by GameTrailers was done to spare you. We've shown you the face of a man after the Disney press conference, we even gave the thing an award for being so fantastically painful. Is it as bad as the Jamie Kennedy performance at the Activision press conference? Well, it's a different type of pain. Instead of feeling bad for the man on stage making a fool of himself, in this case you have to feel for the audience who definitely didn't sign up for what was incoming. Watch, enjoy, and remember that this is supposed to be a press conference -- not the halftime show at some Six Flags concert.

  • High School Musical: a great idea with one fatal flaw

We love the basic idea behind High School Musical. We think a karaoke game would be a big hit with the "expanded audience" out there in the "blue ocean." If we were the type to perform in front of people rather than hiding in total silence, we'd totally play it.The major problem with High School Musical is High School Musical. If we're going to be singing in a game, we'd rather not sing material from a Disney made-for-TV movie. We'd rather belt out the theme from Night Trap than whatever was written for High School Musical.Check the link for some new screens. We hope the game is more exciting than the microphone peripheral!

If you have a pre-teen or know anybody into musicals, than by this point you are well versed in High School Musical, the Disney channel made-for-TV stealth phenomenon. In August, Disney will unleash the game as a Karaoke Revolution-style title on the Wii and PS2. For the DS version the release says, "Fans will dance and play along with the movie's songs and create their own dance videos in order to win the national title." We have no idea what that means and Disney Interactive isn't returning our calls to explain -- is there some DS camera we don't know about? The launch of the games is expected to coincide with the release of High School Musical 2. There will also be bonus tracks from other popular Disney Channel artists -- that's so Raven! We apologize for the interruption and now return you to our regularly scheduled chest-beating and macho programming.[Via GoNintendo]

  • High School Musical brings karaoke, microphone to Wii

The first Wii game likely to ship with a peripheral in the US (not counting foam doodads) is not a Nintendo first party game. It is a licensed game. From Disney. Based on a made-for-TV movie. Disney Interactive is bringing an adaptation of their hit movie High School Musical to the Wii as a karaoke game. The story of the game will follow the first movie, while also affording players the chance to sing the songs from the second. We weren't really aware karaoke games needed or could support stories, but we'll accept it. High School Musical is set to ship this August with an included microphone.High School Musical is facing competition only from Dance Dance Revolution: Hottest Party in the race to be the first US-released Wii game with a special controller as well as the first full music game for the system. That's pretty progressive for Disney!

  • High School Musical: from the Disney Channel to your DS

We aren't sure how to feel about the announcement of DS and Wii games based on the Disney TV-movie High School Musical. On the one hand, it they're music games, and we categorically get very, very excited about all music games. On the other hand, it's based on a made-for-television movie, which, despite High School Musical's popularity, still makes a negative statement about the quality of the property. The DS game involves dancing competitively, and creating and sharing videos of those dance performances-- it sounds kind of like Unison. We're going to have to go watch the movie now and try to sort out our feelings.
