The importance of nerdom in public society has increased exponentially in the past decade, with the video game industry now producing over $25 billion in annual revenue alone. Ask any random group of cosplayers at San Diego Comic-Con what the above completely customized, electronic Halo MJOLNIR Assault Armor suit is worth, and they'd probably guess in the thousands. According to the experts at History Channel's Pawn Stars, they'd be wrong. This Halo fan is hoping to score a humble $2,000 for his spectacular suit, but the Pawn Stars won't go a cent over $200, crushing his dreams and possibly losing him a girlfriend. We salute you, Halo Hero, for testing the waters in popular society for nerds everywhere. We'll be sure to keep our fetishes in convention halls and caves -- for now.

  • Windows Phone Mango augmented reality hands-on

We're still waiting to get our first big bite of the full Mango experience after this morning's liveblog, but we were able to get a quick hands-on with a few of the apps making use of the operating system's new features. Chief among them is the History Channel app, which is making use of the augmented reality features that have been enabled. Using the internal gyro and accelerometer the device was able to overlay landmarks, which with a tap can be added to the phones home screen -- you know, in case you really want to know what's up at the Brooklyn Bridge. We also got a look at the updated Weather Channel app, which will not identify cloud types using any augmented reality trickery, but will give you quick and easy access to what's up -- and about to start falling. Check out the pics below, and get ready for a video after the break. %Gallery-124315%

  • n3D presents History Channel's The Universe in 3D on July 30

History Channel doesn't have its own 3D network yet, but the day after season five premieres there, it will be aired at 10 p.m. on DirecTV's n3D... in 3D (and in 2D on The 101.) A&E TV VP David Zagin claims "The 3D experience greatly enhances the graphics of The Universe," and it certainly seems possible, given the CGI renderings featured on the show, which will focus that episode on "The 7 Wonders of the Solar System" including mountain ranges on Saturn's rings, a massive Volcano on Jupiter as well as its red spot, and hi-res photos of lava flow on Mars. Check the press release after the break for all the details, no word whether there will be any more 3D episodes coming our way, but hopefully this means things are looking up for DirecTV's attempts to acquire content for the first 24-hour 3D network in the US.

We're not a hard blog to please. Send us some screens and some video, perhaps a trailer that has a badass guitar solo screeching throughout, and you've won us over. That's exactly what's going on in the Sniper: Ghost Warrior multiplayer trailer above. Sure, there's a whole bunch of sniping to check out but, man, those licks! We just hope that music doesn't play in-game, because we probably won't be able to kill anyone while we're busy headbanging with our leather bracelet and denim vest on. Accompanying the finger-melting trailer after the break is a bounty of new screens, so if you like your action a bit more still -- but just as violent -- hit up the gallery below. %Gallery-93064%

  • Sniper: Ghost Warrior aiming for Xbox 360 & PC in 'Q2 2010'

click to zoom and enhance First of all, no, there isn't a better title for an FPS than "Sniper: Ghost Warrior." That's just a fact. Second of all, the game's coming from the makers of such gaming classics as Chicken Riot and I Love Beauty: Hollywood Makeover, so we expect nothing but the best from the just-announced title. Sniper: Ghost Warrior is the first Xbox 360 venture from Poland-based devs City Interactive, an idea the company says was born out of some recent television programming. "With all-new programming airing nationally on the History Channel and the Military Channel regarding the training of snipers and their missions, interest in the art of sniping has never been greater," VP of sales Lisa Rivera explains. The game is said to be centered around the assistance of rebels who are trying to overthrow "an aggressive and hostile military command" that has taken over the once-democratic (and fictional) nation of Isla Trueno. A handful of screens were released with the game's announcement this morning (which we've dropped into a gallery below), and if those tickle you pink then it'll interest you to know that the game's got a "Q2 2010" release window. %Gallery-87697%

  • History Channel debuts in Poland and Hungary

Relatively speaking, there's been quite a lot of HD action on the international front of late, and we're pleased to see that History (as it's known these days) will be taking its content to Central Europe. The channel will be debuting in both SD and HD in Poland and Hungary, and while Toya and UPC Polska will offer the standard-def feed in the former nation, Aster City will be delivering both feeds; in Hungary, UPC Hungary will host the SD version while T-Kabel broadcasts both. Best of all, it sounds as if History may cross over into neighboring countries as well in the upcoming months, so keep a close on your EPG if your carrier hasn't jumped in just yet.

Pimping their new television show to the "youngins", The History Channel is offering free gamer picture and theme downloads for their latest docu-reality show Ax Men. Sadly though, Ax Men isn't about assassins running around New York City on a mission to kill, it's about the people involved in the logging industry. A very dangerous industry. The free downloads are available to U.S. Live subscribers and rate pretty low on the coolness scale. But they're free and we've never, ever been against free goodies. Ax Men premieres March 9th on The History Channel, Ax Men downloads premiere on the XBLM right now. Please be careful when downloading.

It is the season to give, you know, and while we've heard that Comcast will be on the receiving end of things when it hikes rates in 2008, at least users across the nation are receiving a boost in their HD lineup before having the family over this holiday season. Up next on Comcast's list is St. Paul / Minneapolis, Minnesota (and western Wisconsin), which is receiving 11 new channels to complement the 22 already available. Among the newcomers are CNN HD, Animal Planet HD, Discovery HD, Food HD, Sci-Fi HD, TLC HD, Universal HD, USA HD, TBS HD, History HD and FSN North HD. Reportedly, customers in the area are already able to view USA, Sci-Fi, Universal and Food, and the rest of the gang is slated to go live on or before December 17th.[Thanks, Ed]

It's that time again -- you know, the moment when San Antonians that rely on Time Warner Cable (partly owned by Time Warner, parent company of AOL, which owns Engadget) can look forward to even more HD channels when they flip on the set. TWC has been doing its part to add a (small) number of high-definition stations of late, including a few here in the Raleigh market this month, and those dwelling in south-central Texas should now be able to view the Lifetime Movie Network (LMN), Food Network HD, HGTV HD and The History Channel HD. We know, it's not the most enthralling list of additions, but hey, we'll take what we can get.

When it's late at night and we're ready to relax in our beds, we usually watch The History Channel or police chase videos. By the time we go to bed, that's usually the only thing that's on aside from infomercials. It's a tough break, but we're not complaining. So, we were immediately interested in this new line of games from The History Channel and Slitherine Strategies. The first game, which is The History Channel Pocket History: Rome, tasks the player with taking over the Roman Empire. Not only must they build and extend the Empire's cities, they must also manage the economy and govern the population. This first title is scheduled to release in April 2008, with subsequent sequels to follow in that year.[Via DS-x2]

We still don't believe it. There's actually a History Channel game on store shelves right now. And it's for PSP. Great Battles of Rome is now available for Europeans to play, and it's certainly one of the most intriguing licenses we've seen in quite some time. We haven't mustered the courage to find a copy, but can any of our European readers care to share their experiences? Here are a few screenshots from the PSP version of the game:%Gallery-4011%

  • History Channel to offer online dogfighting "gameisodes"

    by

    06.05.2007

Starting on July 13th the History Channel will be allowing online gamers to recreate historical dogfights in different aerial theaters around the globe. Kuma Games is producing at least 11 downloadable "gameisodes" (that coined phrase makes us shudder) that you can download during new episodes of the upcoming season of Dogfights.According to Kuma Games CEO Keith Halper, "There will be a variety of planes to fly, starting with WWII planes like Zeros and Hellcats. We receive the script for each show from the History Channel, and we evaluate it to make an accurate but fun gaming experience that's true to the show."The network certainly loves gamers, having previously used footage from Brothers in Arms during a show of the same name. We're fine with the tie-in games for tv shows, in fact it could really liven up things like According to Jim. Is that still on the air? Also, just imagine a How William Shatner Changed The World "gameisode." We're now declaring a moratorium on the word "gameisode."

While we all read the long list of new HD channels DirecTV will be bringing to us this fall, it is always good to get more details. We now know that the History Channel HD will launch -- on at least DirecTV -- this fall as a simulcasted version of the SD channel. This is certainly more exciting than the upconverted Weather channel we learned about last week, but we are still a long way from 100 HD channels this year. 100 HD channels or not, DirecTV is poised to be the provider to be reckonged with when it comes to HD, now if only they could work out all those bugs in the HR20.

History Channel is turning their sights once again to video games--and this time, the subject is Rome. Black Bean Games (Evolution GT, SBK-07) is handling development duties of The History Channel: Great Battles of Rome. Players will play the role of a Roman legionnaire and will fight against barbarian hordes, as well as rival countries. It is promised to have more than just combat, though. It will have an empire-growing strategy element as well. The developers haven't confirmed if the corner of your PSP's screen will have a giant "H" in it during gameplay, though.
