We've been waiting on this one for a good long while, but we're pleased to say that if your chosen flavor of TV happens to be a 1080p, LED-based DLP set with 56-inches of screen real estate and a hard to remember model number, Samsung has just the display for you. Their HL-S5679W packs in a 4000:1 contrast ratio, HDMI input, analog/digital tuner, and of course that 20,000 hour lifespan, speedy startup and heat and energy savings provided by the LED backlit pixels. It's shipping now with a MSRP of $4,199, but the word is you can nab one for around $4,000 on a certain proverbial street.[Via HD Beat]

  • Samsung shipping LED based DLP - HL-S5679W

We are so ready to see these things. We have been hearing about Samsung's LED based DLPs for...well...it seems like forever. There were reports that they were shipping a few months ago but that didn't pan out and then they got delayed! But it now seems like they are shipping for real, although you probally won't be able to get one till Augest as the offical product page states. The HL-S5679W is going to MSRP for $4,199 with a street price around $4,000. In case this is all news to you, let us give you a little background. DLPs are based off of three major things: a set of tiny, tiny mirrors (called the DMD), a color wheel, and a lamp. These new LED based sets replace the last two items and simplify the process. Instead of sending light through the color wheel and then off the tiny mirrors to achieve all the colors, the whole process is based off of red, green, and blue LEDs. Therefore you get more consistent colors, no rainbow effect and also, a lot longer life then light bulb based models.

For those patiently awaiting the release of the first LED backlit HDTVs, your time draws near, friends. Step aside, NuVision -- Samsung's officially posted their HL-S5679W LED-backlit 1080p DLP HDTV, which should result in a 20,000 hour lifespan with faster startups and even better color using the already infamous colormongering DLP system. You'll also get such features as dual HDMI inputs, a 4,000:1 contrast ratio picture, and Samsung's DNIe Digital Natural Image Engine. Perhaps most surprisingly, however, is the 56-incher can be found listed online for less than $4,000, even if it is still in "coming soon" status.[Via HD Beat]
