More bad news for fans of little Windows servers for home. <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/hp">HP</a>, makers of the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/whs">MediaSmart</a> boxes that defined the first release of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/whs">Windows Home Server</a>, has confirmed that it is canceling plans to support the next major release of the OS, codenamed <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/whs,vail">Vail</a>. This comes hot on the heels of the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/11/24/windows-home-server-vail-drops-drive-extender-support-ms-sugg/">removal of storage pooling</a> from that release, an extremely unpopular move among the relatively few but ardent fans of WHS. HP is promising to continue support for its existing MediaSmart products but apparently has already redeployed development teams to focus on <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/webos">WebOS</a> devices. For its part, Microsoft will be relying on <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/acer">Acer</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/tranquilpc">Tranquil PC</a> to hang the decorations for the Vail release party. Anyone still care to RSVP?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/12/01/hp-dropping-windows-home-server-to-focus-on-webos-wont-be-hitt/">HP dropping Windows Home Server to focus on WebOS, won't be hitting the slopes at Vail</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 01 Dec 2010 07:35:00 EST. It's not just oddly random <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/20/hps-photosmart-estation-android-tablet-hands-on/">Android tablet-based printers</a> for HP today -- the company also announced two new all-in-one PCs, the TouchSmart 310 (pictured above) and the Omni100. The TouchSmart 310 is obviously the latest in the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/touchsmart">TouchSmart</a> line, with a 2.8GHz Athlon II 240e dual-core CPU, 4GB of RAM, Radeon HD 4270 integrated graphics, a 1TB drive and a 20-inch 1600x1900 touchscreen running the latest version of HP's Windows 7 touch overlay with custom interfaces for Facebook, Hulu, Netflix, Twitter, and HP's built-in HDTV tuner. Not bad -- but we'll see how much all those options cost above the $699 base price. On the non-touch front, the Omni100 also has a 20-inch 1600x1900 display, but it's running HP's MediaSmart Windows 7 overlay on a 1.8GHz Athlon II 260u with 3GB of RAM, a 500GB drive and the same Radeon HD 4270 integrated graphics. It's also cheaper, starting at $499 -- we're definitely a little concerned that HP's cheaped out on display quality at those prices, but we'll have to see things in person first. We'll find out soon enough -- both of these hit on the 22nd.<br />

For those enjoying media bliss thanks to a little <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/hp,mediasmart">MediaSmart</a> box humming away somewhere in the corner, life just got a even more lovely. HP has announced a partnership with <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/tivo">TiVo</a> that allows MediaSmart users to install a Windows Home Server add-in, enabling the two devices to talk sweet nothings to each other. From within the WHS console you'll be able to suck recorded content from the TiVo onto the MediaSmart's expansive storage array and, from there, play it on any of your compatible devices (PC, Mac, Xbox, PS3, etc.). Or, when you start to miss those happy TiVo sounds, you can send that content back over to DVR to view from there. The WHS extension is available right now to MediaSmart owners, so get on with the downloading already.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/10/hp-mediasmart-add-in-adds-tivo-compatibility-enables-video-tran/">HP MediaSmart add-in adds TiVo compatibility, enables video transfers to and fro</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 10 Mar 2010 07:59:00 EST. The wild world of rapid-fire phone software updates has spoiled us all, but HP's bringing just a smidgen of that to the world of home servers. This week owners of the last-gen EX470 and EX480 series <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/mediasmart">MediaSmart Servers</a> will be able to nab a DVD that updates their servers to the new 3.0 software currently available on the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/09/15/hp-mediasmart-ex490-and-ex495-home-servers-beef-up-mac-support/">EX490 and EX495 models</a>, including better Mac support and automatic media transcoding. Unfortunately, this update isn't free: you'll have to pay $25 for the privilege. EX470 / 475 owners are also encouraged to bump their unit up to 1GB of RAM if they haven't already. We aren't thrilled at the fee, but there is something a bit more reassuring in this process than Motorola's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/02/15/motorola-publishes-schedule-of-android-upgrades-for-its-handsets/">"hope and pray"</a> OTA update model.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/02/23/hp-mediasmart-ex470-and-ex480-getting-3-0-software-upgrade-optio/">HP MediaSmart EX470 and EX480 getting 3.0 software upgrade option this week</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 23 Feb 2010 22:46:00 EST. Listen, son, back in our day we had a tape drive, a copy of Retrospect and a nightly schedule... and we <em>liked</em> it. These days HP thinks it can stuff a Dual Core processor, 2GB of RAM and up to four 2TB drives in our faces. The new EX490 and EX495 can handle up to 7TB of internal storage and up to 17TB pairing up internal drives with external hanger-ons. More interesting, however, are the new software capabilities built on top of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/WindowsHomeServer/">Windows Home Server</a>. Mac users now get admin features, media collection and bare metal recovery over Time Machine, and the servers have a built-in video converter for collecting and converting videos for a specific device. Speaking of devices, iPhone and iPod touch users can also stream media off of the servers using a free HP iStream app. The EX490 has a Celeron processor and 1TB of storage for $549, while the EX495 does 1.5TB and the Dual Core for $699. PR is after the break. <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hp-mediasmart-ex490-and-ex495-home-servers-press-shots/">HP MediaSmart EX490 and EX495 Home Servers press shots</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hp-mediasmart-ex490-and-ex495-home-servers-press-shots/#2283834"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/09/msmart-pr-02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hp-mediasmart-ex490-and-ex495-home-servers-press-shots/#2283833"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/09/msmart-pr-03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hp-mediasmart-ex490-and-ex495-home-servers-press-shots/#2283835"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/09/msmart-pr-04_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hp-mediasmart-ex490-and-ex495-home-servers-press-shots/#2283832"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/09/msmart-pr-05_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hp-mediasmart-ex490-and-ex495-home-servers-press-shots/#2283831"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/09/msmart-pr-06_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div> <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hp-mediasmart-ex490-and-ex495-home-servers-hands-on/">HP MediaSmart EX490 and EX495 Home Servers hands-on</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hp-mediasmart-ex490-and-ex495-home-servers-hands-on/#2283823"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/09/mediasmart-hands-102_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hp-mediasmart-ex490-and-ex495-home-servers-hands-on/#2283822"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/09/mediasmart-hands-103_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hp-mediasmart-ex490-and-ex495-home-servers-hands-on/#2283821"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/09/mediasmart-hands-104_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hp-mediasmart-ex490-and-ex495-home-servers-hands-on/#2283818"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/09/mediasmart-hands-105_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hp-mediasmart-ex490-and-ex495-home-servers-hands-on/#2283817"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/09/mediasmart-hands-106_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/09/15/hp-mediasmart-ex490-and-ex495-home-servers-beef-up-mac-support/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>HP MediaSmart EX490 and EX495 Home Servers beef up Mac support</em></a></p><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/storage/" rel="tag">Storage</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/09/15/hp-mediasmart-ex490-and-ex495-home-servers-beef-up-mac-support/">HP MediaSmart EX490 and EX495 Home Servers beef up Mac support</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 15 Sep 2009 02:20:00 EST. Keen eyed <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/mediasmartserver">HP MediaSmart server</a> fans peeped a new version number in a test software update package, 3.1.0.00000. There's no indication what that possible software update might contain, but that hasn't stopped speculation focusing on the possibility of this either being the EX and LX series update promised a few months ago, or a hint towards all new hardware on the way. In lieu of any hard information, we'll let your hopes, dreams and desires fill in the blanks of what the next iteration of these home servers might contain.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/media-pcs/" rel="tag">Media PCs</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/hp/" rel="tag">HP</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/08/12/test-update-could-indicate-new-hp-mediasmart-server-in-the-works/">Test update could indicate new HP MediaSmart server in the works, or nothing at all</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 12 Aug 2009 16:24:00 EST. This whole global economic crisis, and its resulting massive loss of jobs got us thinking. We here at Engadget didn't want to stand helplessly by, announcing every new round of misery without giving anything back -- so we decided to take the opportunity to spread a little positivity. We'll be handing out a new gadget every day to lucky readers until we run out of stuff or companies stop sending things. Today we've got an <a href="http://www.shopping.hp.com/product/computer/categories/home_servers/1/accessories/FL702AA%2523ABA">HP MediaSmart Server LX195</a> on offer, perfect for storing and streaming your growing multimedia collection. Read the rules below (no skimming -- we're omniscient and can tell when you've skimmed) and get commenting! Hooray for free stuff!<br /><em><br />Big thanks to <a href="http://www.shopping.hp.com/product/computer/categories/home_servers/1/accessories/FL702AA%2523ABA">HP</a> for providing the gear!</em><br /><em><em><br /></em></em>The rules:<br />
<ul>
    <li><strong>Leave a comment below.</strong> Any comment will do, but if you want to share your proposal for "fixing" the world economy, that'd be sweet too.<br /></li>
    <li><strong>You may only enter this specific giveaway once.</strong> If you enter this giveaway more than once you'll be automatically disqualified, etc. (Yes, we have robots that thoroughly check to ensure fairness.)</li>
    <li><strong>If you enter more than once, only activate one comment.</strong> This is pretty self explanatory. Just be careful and you'll be fine.<strong><br /></strong></li>
    <li><strong>Contest is open to anyone in the 50 States, 18 or older! </strong>Sorry, we don't make this rule (we hate excluding anyone), so be mad at our lawyers and contest laws if you have to be mad.<br /></li>
    <li><strong>Winner will be chosen randomly.</strong> The winner will receive one (1) <a href="http://www.shopping.hp.com/product/computer/categories/home_servers/1/accessories/FL702AA%2523ABA">HP MediaSmart Server LX195</a>. Approximate retail value is $399.99.<br /></li>
    <li>If you are chosen, you will be notified by email. Winners must respond within three days of the end of the contest. If you do not respond within that period, another winner will be chosen. </li>
    <li><strong>Entries can be submitted until Monday, July 20th, at 11:59PM ET. </strong>Good luck!</li>

After being <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/04/29/hp-mediasmart-lx195-boasts-640gb-hdd-1-6ghz-atom-400-msrp/">introduced to the world</a> late last month, we've heard little else about HP's lower-end MediaSmart Server LX195... until now, obviously. This little media streamer made its way into the <em>HotHardware</em> labs for a little Q&amp;A, and it managed to escape with lots of praise, a mild amount of criticism and a price tag that'll likely be too steep for most to swallow. As for performance and features, the LX195 was found to shine; the Media Collector, iTunes server and Time Machine backup functionality all worked great. Unfortunately, the "endless loop of updates" seen during the initial setup and the lack of an <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/04/13/firmware-update-brings-file-conversion-iphone-access-to-hps-me/">April update</a> -- which was sent out to the EX series <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/04/22/hp-mediasmart-ex485-ex487-v2-5-update-now-available/">last month</a> -- left somewhat of a bitter taste in reviewers mouths. Overall, the system delivered and worked as advertised, but the $360 to $400 street price is apt to turn all but the hardest of hardcore HP fans away, not to mention that the aforesaid EX update (which will hit the LX195 this fall) will require users to completely wipe their HDD and start over from scratch. Yearning for more info on the HP MediaSmart <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/LX195/">LX195</a>? Here's some new concrete details for you to go along with the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/04/13/hp-mediasmart-server-lx195-lights-up-in-leaked-images/">leaked images</a> from earlier this month. As previously suggested, it's got a single 640GB internal SATA drive with 7200RPM, with the only option for expansion being via the four USB 2.0 ports in the back. We're also looking at a 1.6GHz Atom 230 processor, 1GB RAM, Windows Home Server software and support for Apple's Time Machine. Mum's the word on price, but if you're looking to start saving early, suggested retail price is just under four Benjamins.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hp-mediasmart-lx195-boasts-640gb-hdd-1-6ghz-atom-400-price-tag/">HP MediaSmart LX195 boasts 640GB HDD, 1.6GHz Atom, $400 price tag</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hp-mediasmart-lx195-boasts-640gb-hdd-1-6ghz-atom-400-price-tag/#1526975"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/04/hp-mediasmart-server-lx195_image-3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hp-mediasmart-lx195-boasts-640gb-hdd-1-6ghz-atom-400-price-tag/#1526976"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/04/rmenglx195a_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hp-mediasmart-lx195-boasts-640gb-hdd-1-6ghz-atom-400-price-tag/#1526977"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/04/rmenglx195ab_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/media-pcs/" rel="tag">Media PCs</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/04/29/hp-mediasmart-lx195-boasts-640gb-hdd-1-6ghz-atom-400-msrp/">HP MediaSmart LX195 boasts 640GB HDD, 1.6GHz Atom, $400 MSRP</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 29 Apr 2009 20:39:00 EST. HP's MediaSmart Server ex487 (1.5TB) and ex485 (750GB) both received copious amounts of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/12/29/hp-mediasmart-server-ex487-gets-hands-on-love-and-full-blown-rev/">praise</a> when launched late last year, but considering just <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/07/29/hp-responds-to-mediasmart-issues-offers-no-real-solution-at-all/">how many issues</a> the original two had (the ex470 and ex475), it wouldn't take much to best 'em. Today, HP is issuing its second <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/23/hp-issues-software-update-for-mediasmart-server/">firmware update</a> of the year for the series, but the first ever for the newest duo -- and make no mistake, it's a big one. The v2.5 update adds in loads of new features, far too many to cover in this space, in fact. Now that you've had a few months a stream all manners of media throughout your home and backup your small cadre of computers via one of HP's new <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/mediasmart">MediaSmart Servers</a>, we're interested in seeing just how you'd change this bad boy. HP popped in a faster processor and a bit more RAM in order to make sure these, um, actually <em>worked as advertised</em>, but we're certain even that hasn't satisfied the hardcore critics in attendance. Have you been totally satisfied with your <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/12/29/hp-debuts-mac-compatible-mediasmart-ex485-ex487-home-servers/">ex485 / ex487</a>? Has the server handled all the Windows Home Server functions with ease? Are you noticing any lag? Are you happy with the file support, heat output and overall styling? Feel free to rant uncontrollably in comments below -- just keep it under control.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/storage/" rel="tag">Storage</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/networking/" rel="tag">Networking</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/04/10/how-would-you-change-hps-mediasmart-server-ex485-ex487/">How would you change HP's MediaSmart Server ex485 / ex487?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 10 Apr 2009 22:54:00 EST. HP <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/mediasmart/">MediaSmart</a> Server enthusiast skeeter has uncovered what looks like the latest addition to the line, the LX195. Sporting a mere 640GB, MediaSmartServer.net speculates this edition could be a single drive model, slotting in below the EX475 and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/12/29/hp-debuts-mac-compatible-mediasmart-ex485-ex487-home-servers/">EX485</a> with additional hard drive space added via USB. It's been forever and a day since HP issued a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/03/hp-mediasmart-server-getting-security-media-streaming-updates/">MediaSmart Server update</a>, but now -- at long last -- owners can suck down some more new software in order to implement a few minor changes. The HPMSS-1.3-R1 update adds in a Rollback feature, improves image processing performance in HP Photo Webshare, corrects error messages displayed using SSL and TZO certifications and removes unnecessary temperature sensor displays. HP's 1.5TB MediaSmart Server ex487 (and its smaller 750GB sibling, the ex485) were just <a href="http://www.engadgethd.com/2008/12/29/hp-debuts-mac-compatible-mediasmart-ex485-ex487-home-servers/">announced</a> hours ago, but that hasn't stopped a few lucky reviewers from putting their hands-on pictures and impressions online for the world to pore over. The biggest knocks that seemed to really grate the nerves of critics were that the single eSATA port was not port-multiplier aware, and despite the bump to 2GB of RAM, the TwonkyMedia and Remote Media Streaming software were still deemed "quirky and in need of some polish." Those gripes aside, the newfangled unit was pretty well adored. HP's 1.5TB MediaSmart Server ex487 (and its smaller 750GB sibling, the ex485) were just <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/12/29/hp-debuts-mac-compatible-mediasmart-ex485-ex487-home-servers/">announced</a> hours ago, but that hasn't stopped a few lucky reviewers from putting their hands-on pictures and impressions online for the world to pore over. In fact, <em>WeGotServed</em> flat-out called the device "stunning," praising HP for its tightly integrated applications that worked fairly well on top of Windows Home Server. It's been a long, long while since we've heard the words <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/mediasmart/">HP MediaSmart</a>, and in fact, the last mention that was made <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/07/29/hp-responds-to-mediasmart-issues-offers-no-real-solution-at-all/">wasn't exactly positive</a>. HP's looking to put the past away and forge ahead with two new ones in the line: the Mac-friendly ex485 and ex487. Both devices are (of course) based on Microsoft's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/whs/">Windows Home Server</a> platform, and just like their <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/01/07/microsoft-announces-hp-mediasmart-server-powered-by-windows-home/">predecessors</a>, these are meant to automatically backup machines around the home and act as a network-accessible repository for all things media. The pair features HP's Media Collector (used to schedule, copy and centralize digital files from networked PCs) and also acts as an iTunes server and an external backup device for Macs running Leopard and using Apple's Time Machine software. As for specs, you'll find a 2GHz Celeron CPU in each with 2GB of DDR2 RAM, gigabit Ethernet, four USB 2.0 ports, one eSATA jack and four internal HDD bays. The February-bound duo can be pre-ordered on January 5th for $599 (ex485; 750GB) / $749 (ex487; 1.5TB), and each can be scaled up to 9TB. Full release is after the break.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/12/29/hp-debuts-mac-compatible-mediasmart-ex485-ex487-home-servers/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>HP debuts Mac-compatible MediaSmart ex485 / ex487 home servers</em></a></p><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/media-streamers/" rel="tag">Media streamers</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/hp/" rel="tag">HP</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/12/29/hp-debuts-mac-compatible-mediasmart-ex485-ex487-home-servers/">HP debuts Mac-compatible MediaSmart ex485 / ex487 home servers</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 29 Dec 2008 00:42:00 EST. Chalk this one up as rampant speculation for now, but word on the street has it that HP may be fixing to axe its LCD TV business and kill the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/05/07/hp-brings-youtube-to-mediasmart-connected-products/">MediaSmart HDTV</a> while it's at it. In taking a step back, it's easy to see how logical this move seems -- HP has never been a giant in the LCD HDTV arena, and its <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/03/hp-intros-sl4282n-sl4782n-connected-hdtvs-updates-media-center/">MediaSmart line</a> serves an even smaller niche. Couple those facts with <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/28/global-tv-pricing-sinks-22-year-over-year-in-september/">plummeting LCD prices</a> and diminishing margins, and you've got yourself a pretty strong case to hit the eject button. If all of this pans out, it'll surely hurt Microsoft's chances of getting even more TV manufacturers to sell sets with <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/04/17/vista-media-center-update-for-hps-mediasmart-hdtvs-now-availabl/">Media Center Extenders built in</a>, but at least those still on the hunt for a MediaSmart HDTV on the cheap would have an opportunity to find just that.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.electronichouse.com/article/hp_dumping_mediasmart_tvs/C157">ElectronicHouse</a>]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/industry/" rel="tag">Industry</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/displays/" rel="tag">Displays</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/media-streamers/" rel="tag">Media streamers</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/hp/" rel="tag">HP</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/28/hp-exiting-lcd-tv-biz-killing-mediasmart-hdtv-line/">HP exiting LCD TV biz, killing MediaSmart HDTV line?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 28 Oct 2008 12:38:00 EST. If you've somehow managed to <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/11/16/how-would-you-change-windows-home-server/">hold off</a> from buying one of HP's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/07/29/hp-responds-to-mediasmart-issues-offers-no-real-solution-at-all/">MediaSmart servers</a> (or, you know, just forgot about your plans to buy one), <em>MissingRemote</em> has a nice writeup explaining the benefits of picking one up versus building your own. The storage junkies over there pitted an EX475 against a "home brewed Frankenstein" and a server built with WHS-specific parts in order to see which of the three would emerge triumphant. In the end, HP's own unit managed to garner the most of their love, which was quite surprising to be honest. Sure, building your own can be a ton of fun, but the EX475 just delivered in every important area for right around the same price as the other two homegrown competitors. Don't believe us? Congratulations, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/03/hp-mediasmart-server-getting-security-media-streaming-updates/">HP MediaSmart Server</a> owners, you can finally undertake such drastic hardware modification as upgrading the RAM without voiding the warranty. A 2GB stick should help speed up the console and any particularly memory-hungry add ins you've loaded, but word is this can be slightly trickier than your average RAM upgrade and HP warns you're still on the hook for any damage incurred during an upgrade. Now, where'd we put that screwdriver?<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.ehomeupgrade.com/2008/09/25/hp-to-relax-warranty-terms-and-allow-mediasmart-server-owners-to-upgrade-system-memory/">eHomeUpgrade</a>]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/media-pcs/" rel="tag">Media PCs</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/others/" rel="tag">Others</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/09/29/hp-allows-mediasmart-server-memory-upgrades-still-wants-you-hom/">HP allows MediaSmart Server memory upgrades, still wants you home before the streetlights come on</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 29 Sep 2008 13:49:00 EST. Whoa, boy -- HP just went loony on us tonight, and in the midst of everything else, we found a new pair of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/HDX/">HDX</a> notebooks. Kicking things off is the X16, which boasts a woefully under-pixelated 16-inch 1,366 x 768 resolution display, a 2.26GHz Core 2 Duo P8400 CPU, NVIDIA's 512MB GeForce 9600 GT, 4GB of DDR2 RAM, a 320GB 5,400RPM hard drive, dual-layer SuperMulti optical drive and built-in WiFi / Bluetooth. As for the beastly X18, you'll find a lot of the same kit internally, but the 18-inch 1,920 x 1,080 display is one we can really salivate over; additionally, this one ups the ante with twin 250GB HDDs and a Blu-ray reader. Each unit includes the essentials: an Ethernet port, multicard reader, integrated Altec Lansing speakers, ExpressCard slot, four USB 2.0 sockets, audio in / out, HDMI / VGA and a 4-pin FireWire connector. Both units should ship later this month starting at $1,249 and $1549, respectively.<br /><br />

In our recent <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/06/19/the-media-center-extender-shootout/">roundup of Vista Media Center Extenders</a> we were very disappointed that <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/06/17/hp-mediasmart-connect-brings-digital-media-to-your-hdtv/">HP MediaSmart connect</a> wasn't available in time to go head to head with the rest. Now that the MediaSmart Connect is in hand, we were anxious to try it out and see how it compares and we have to say that with a MSRP of $350 and a street price at just under $300, we had pretty high expectations. Although there is no doubt that it has the nicest exterior and remote of any extender available, we're not sure if those two merits alone help it to live up to its premium price.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hp-mediasmart-connect/">HP MediaSmart Connect</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hp-mediasmart-connect/#991594"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadgethd.com/media/2008/08/hp-msc04lg_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hp-mediasmart-connect/#991595"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadgethd.com/media/2008/08/hp-msc16lg_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hp-mediasmart-connect/#991592"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadgethd.com/media/2008/08/hp-msc01lg_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hp-mediasmart-connect/#991580"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadgethd.com/media/2008/08/hp-msc02lg_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hp-mediasmart-connect/#991585"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadgethd.com/media/2008/08/hp-msc21lg_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/08/28/hp-mediasmart-connect-review/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>HP MediaSmart Connect Review</em></a></p><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/reviews/" rel="tag">Reviews</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/media-pcs/" rel="tag">Media PCs</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/media-streamers/" rel="tag">Media streamers</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/hp/" rel="tag">HP</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/08/28/hp-mediasmart-connect-review/">HP MediaSmart Connect Review</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 28 Aug 2008 16:00:00 EST. PlayOn wants to make sure you can get your daily dose of Barackrolls and <em>Airwolf </em>episodes beyond the desktop, while <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/hulu">Hulu</a> might not have a slick <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/05/21/roku-netflix-player-hands-on-first-impressions/">streaming set-top box</a> of its own, this media server software turns flash video RSS streams into easily browsed folders for your <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/dlna">DLNA-compliant</a> hardware. PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/mediasmart">HP MediaSmart</a> HDTVs being at the top of that list (with Nintendo Wii support planned by year-end) owners can grab the beta release of the software and stream low-res episodes of <em>Psych</em>, or any assortment of YouTube video they please. With Netflix support "just down the road" this could provide an end around for PS3 owners looking for streaming love, or Xbox 360 owners <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/07/14/microsoft-and-netflix-announce-partnership/">without Xbox Live Gold</a> (we know you're out there.) Bad news is the beta only lasts 60 days and there's a $30 pricetag waiting at the end of the free lunch highway. Our experience was good, with no stutters in a <em>Psych</em> episode streamed via Wi-Fi to the PS3 (albeit with no choice of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/08/05/hulu-refreshes-hd-gallery-with-720p-tv-shows/">HD clips</a>), but we'd wait for confirmation on the whole Netflix bit before dropping any dough.<br /><br /><strong>Update</strong>: Getting 69-C00D36C4 / folder could not be accessed errors on your PS3 or Xbox 360, or waiting for 64-bit Vista support to dive in? PlayOn CTO David Karlton updated the official <a href="http://www.themediamall.com/blog/?p=33">blog</a> to let users know fixes and additional support is in the works, so keep an eye out for more news shortly if things aren't working just yet.<br />

It's no secret that <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/06/15/hp-mediasmart-server-hands-on/">HP MediaSmart Server</a> owners have been <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/07/28/power-pack-1-and-hps-add-ons-make-windows-home-server-a-real-gr/">having an awful time</a> getting their device to operate correctly, er, at all since HP loosed its most recent <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/03/hp-mediasmart-server-getting-security-media-streaming-updates/">software update</a> on July 21st. In order to <strike>make sure owners have a solution</strike> implement its best damage control tactics, HP's own Director of Marketing for the Connected Entertainment group has put out a statement informing users that the problems (slow console shown above) are more than a figment of their imagination. Furthermore, the so-called solution is to simply "install each update one at a time, independently," because clearly HP cannot be bothered to fix a problem it helped create. Oh, it gets better. HP is also aware that PacketVideo (bundled with the update) "no longer supports media streaming to Sony's PlayStation 3," so it simply encourages owners to surf on over to a third-party website and hack up the PV database in order to get things back to normal. Jump on past the break for the patently ridiculous letter in its entirety.<br /><br />[Image courtesy of <a href="http://www.withinwindows.com/2008/07/27/whs-power-pack-1-add-ons-unusable-server/">Within Windows</a>]<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/07/29/hp-responds-to-mediasmart-issues-offers-no-real-solution-at-all/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>HP responds to MediaSmart Server issues, offers no real solution at all</em></a></p><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/homeentertainment/" rel="tag">Home Entertainment</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/storage/" rel="tag">Storage</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/networking/" rel="tag">Networking</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/07/29/hp-responds-to-mediasmart-issues-offers-no-real-solution-at-all/">HP responds to MediaSmart Server issues, offers no real solution at all</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 29 Jul 2008 15:43:00 EST. Yeah, you may be burning that midnight oil, but your weariness isn't the reason you're certain you've seen this thing before. Touted at CES as the <a href="http://www.engadgethd.com/2008/01/03/hps-new-mediasmart-receiver-does-media-center-extender-and-mor/">MediaSmart Receiver</a>, the re-dubbed MediaSmart Connect is finally available for pre-order. Just as we heard before, this unit takes full advantage of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/09/06/microsoft-debuts-extenders-for-windows-media-center-adds-divx-a/">Extender for Windows Media Center</a> technology, and although it possesses no internal storage space, it will pull in digital media from around your home (and a variety of online media outlets) and pipe it straight to your HDTV. The unit plays nice with other UPnP- and DLNA-compliant devices and includes 802.11a/b/g/n WiFi, an Ethernet port, HDMI / component jacks and support for MPEG2/4, DivX, XviD, WMV, MP3, WMA, AAC, JPEG and BMP files (among others). Prospective buyers can get their order in today for $349.<br /><br />

As YouTube slowly but surely <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/youtube/">sneaks</a> its way into the connected home, we just keep telling ourselves it'll support high-def content one day. If and when that day ever arrives, owners of HP <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/MediaSmart/">MediaSmart</a> connected entertainment products will definitely be ready to take full advantage, as a recent announcement has brought the internet video king's content to Hewlett-Packard wares. The deal will enable MediaSmart TV owners and those that purchase the forthcoming MediaSmart Connect digital media receiver to simply login to their YT account via the remote, but there's really no details beyond that. If you're cool with pixelated video blown up to 50 or more inches, give it a go and let us know how it turns out. As for us, we'll be waiting for <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/03/20/viddyou-takes-online-video-sharing-to-1080p/">YouTube HD</a>.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/displays/" rel="tag">Displays</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/media-streamers/" rel="tag">Media streamers</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/other-hardware/" rel="tag">Other hardware</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/set-top-boxes/" rel="tag">Set-top boxes</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/internet/" rel="tag">Internet</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/05/07/hp-brings-youtube-to-mediasmart-connected-products/">HP brings YouTube to MediaSmart connected products</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 07 May 2008 18:33:00 EST. The "<a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/09/06/microsoft-debuts-extenders-for-windows-media-center-adds-divx-a/">Extender for Windows Media Center</a>" field is getting more crowded by the day, but we've gotta say this <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/03/hps-new-mediasmart-receiver-does-media-center-extender-and-mor/">MediaSmart from HP</a> is sticking out in a good way. Not only is there a Pocket Media Drive bay built in, but you can also use HP's media interface if Microsoft's isn't doing it for you. It's all about the flexibility, and HP delivers here -- now let's work on the sexy.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hands-on-with-hps-mediasmart-extender/">Hands-on with HP's MediaSmart Extender</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hands-on-with-hps-mediasmart-extender/#567557"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2008/01/wmhpmediasmartreceiverx280n-0_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hands-on-with-hps-mediasmart-extender/#567561"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2008/01/wmhpmediasmartreceiverx280n-1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hands-on-with-hps-mediasmart-extender/#567563"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2008/01/wmhpmediasmartreceiverx280n-2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hands-on-with-hps-mediasmart-extender/#567562"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2008/01/wmhpmediasmartreceiverx280n-3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hands-on-with-hps-mediasmart-extender/#567558"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2008/01/wmhpmediasmartreceiverx280n-4_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/homeentertainment/" rel="tag">Home Entertainment</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/networking/" rel="tag">Networking</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/08/hands-on-with-hps-mediasmart-extender/">Hands-on with HP's MediaSmart Extender</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 08 Jan 2008 15:14:00 EST. For those who've <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/12/05/stay-at-home-servers-out-to-shatter-the-stereotype/">overcome the stereotype</a> and admitted HP's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/06/15/hp-mediasmart-server-hands-on/">MediaSmart Server</a> into your abode, we applaud you. Apparently, HP thinks pretty highly of you as well, as it's gearing up to beam out a number of software enhancements to its iconic Windows Home Server-based device. First up is the addition of integrated server-side anti-virus software, which will be provided by McAfee but will only remain free for the first seven months. More interesting, however, are the updates involving PacketVideo technology and 64-bit Vista support. Apparently, the former will "enhance the media streaming process from the server to other digital media devices in the home, such as the <a href="http://www.engadgethd.com/2008/01/03/hp-intros-sl4282n-sl4782n-connected-hdtvs-updates-media-center/">MediaSmart TV</a>," and it will also add "advanced graphics such as thumbnails of photos, in-menu browsing and album art." As for the latter, HP simply informs us that 64-bit Vista support will be added in. When can you expect the goods? Look for the whole lot to be delivered automatically sometime next month.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/mediapcs/" rel="tag">Media PCs</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/storage/" rel="tag">Storage</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/03/hp-mediasmart-server-getting-security-media-streaming-updates/">HP MediaSmart Server getting security, media streaming updates</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 03 Jan 2008 01:25:00 EST.
