President Obama recently took some time out of the APEC Summit in Yokohama to meet with a few of Japan's finest automatons, and as always he was one cool cat. Our man didn't even blink when confronted with this happy-go-lucky <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/HRP-4C/">HRP-4C</a> fashion robot, was somewhat charmed by the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Paro/">Paro</a> robotic seal, and more than eager to take a seat in one of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/toyota,mobilityrobot">Yamaha's personal transport robots</a>. But who wouldn't be, right? See him in action after the break.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/11/15/president-obama-takes-a-minute-to-chat-with-our-future-robot-ove/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>President Obama takes a minute to chat with our future robot overlords (video)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/11/15/president-obama-takes-a-minute-to-chat-with-our-future-robot-ove/">President Obama takes a minute to chat with our future robot overlords (video)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 15 Nov 2010 14:28:00 EST. You may not be able to build an <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/HRP4C/">HRP-4C</a> fembot in your average garage, but the programming would practically take care of itself -- not only does the AIST humanoid <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/10/08/yamahas-singing-robot-quietly-trolls-slyly-frightens-at-ceatec/">sing</a> using off-the-shelf Yamaha Vocaloid software, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/10/19/hrp-4c-dances-and-sings-in-the-uncanny-valley-video/">its dance moves</a> are click-and-drag, too. Roboticist Dr. Kazuhito Yokoi gave <em>IEEE Spectrum</em> an inside look at the HRP-4C's motion trajectory software, which works much like 3D animation tools: you position the limbs where you want them to start and when you want them to end up using <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/07/12/videomocap-creates-3d-animation-from-any-2d-clip-video/">keyframes</a>, and the software takes care of the rest. The system's intelligent enough to generate a 6.7 second sequence from just eight keyframes, and it compensates for hazardous instructions, too -- if your haphazard choreography would tip her over or send limbs flying, it'll automatically adjust her moves. See how it works in a video after the break and hit up our source link for the full interview.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/11/03/choreographing-a-humanoid-robots-dance-routine-is-as-easy-as-cl/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Choreographing a humanoid robot's dance routine is as easy as click and pull</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/11/03/choreographing-a-humanoid-robots-dance-routine-is-as-easy-as-cl/">Choreographing a humanoid robot's dance routine is as easy as click and pull</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 03 Nov 2010 09:48:00 EST. AIST's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/hrp-4c">HRP-4C</a> fashion robot has dramatically improved since we first saw "her" strut her stuff on the runway. She's so mesmerizing in fact, that we bet you'll barely notice the quartet of scantily clad dancers around her. Watch her tear it down in a pair of videos after the break. Shame about the man-hands.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/10/19/hrp-4c-dances-and-sings-in-the-uncanny-valley-video/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>HRP-4C dances and sings her way into the Uncanny Valley (video)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/10/19/hrp-4c-dances-and-sings-in-the-uncanny-valley-video/">HRP-4C dances and sings her way into the Uncanny Valley (video)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 19 Oct 2010 04:32:00 EST. As with most <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/28/tone-deaf-robots-teach-each-other-to-sing-passionately-butcher/">robots that sing</a>, Yamaha's demonstration at <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/CEATEC/">CEATEC</a> was nothing short of terrifying. Oh sure, it's sort of impressive that the modified <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/07/23/video-hrp-4c-model-robot-is-getting-married-wont-shut-up-ab/">HRP-4C</a> could take requests from a pre-selected list of jams on an iPhone, but after witnessing actual artists perform at Club Quattro in Shibuya, we'd say this chick has aways to go before she's accepted into the blossoming Japan music circuit. Judge for yourself after the break, Simon.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/10/08/yamahas-singing-robot-quietly-trolls-slyly-frightens-at-ceatec/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Yamaha's singing robot quietly trolls, slyly frightens at CEATEC (video)</em></a></p><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/robots/" rel="tag">Robots</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/10/08/yamahas-singing-robot-quietly-trolls-slyly-frightens-at-ceatec/">Yamaha's singing robot quietly trolls, slyly frightens at CEATEC (video)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 08 Oct 2009 03:19:00 EST. Ok, ok, "she" isn't <em>really</em> getting married, that would be illegal outside of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/10/16/sex-with-massachusetts-robots-by-2050-wicked/">Massachusetts</a>. Besides, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/hrp-4c">HRP-4C</a> is already hitched, apparently, to her creator Kazuhito Yokoi who appeared at the Osaka fashion show dressed in a tuxedo. Looking wobbly, perplexed, and creepy as hell, HRP-4C bravely slipped on a helmet of taffeta and lace in what's being called her first professional runway appearance. The crowd seemed to enjoy it until HRP-4C turned on them with her green lasers. Really, see for yourself in the unsettling video embedded after the break.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://news.cnet.com/8301-17938_105-10293197-1.html?part=rss&amp;tag=feed&amp;subj=Crave">Crave</a>]<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/07/23/video-hrp-4c-model-robot-is-getting-married-wont-shut-up-ab/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Video: HRP-4C 'fashion robot' is getting married, won't shut up about it</em></a></p><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/robots/" rel="tag">Robots</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/07/23/video-hrp-4c-model-robot-is-getting-married-wont-shut-up-ab/">Video: HRP-4C 'fashion robot' is getting married, won't shut up about it</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 23 Jul 2009 02:34:00 EST. While that perv in the back is busy shooting HRP-4C's firm buttocks shaped from a glossy Stormtrooper alloy, the rest of us can marvel at the fact that Japan has produced a walking, talking fashion robot. Standing at just over 5-feet tall and 95-pounds, HRP-4C, developed by Japan's National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology, will make its catwalk debut next week at the Tokyo fashion show. The she-bot features 30 motors spread throughout its body with an additional eight motors in its face for expressing general boredom and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2006/03/31/naomi-campbell-in-court-for-chucking-another-phone-at-maid/">disgust with the help</a>. Its main purpose is entertainment and to attract crowds much like its fleshy counterparts -- so don't expect home cooked meals and laundry service should you take the $200,000 robot home. Unfortunately, HRP-4C didn't function as planned today. Reports say that the robot, "kept looking surprised, opening its mouth and eyes in a stunned expression, when the demonstrator had asked it to smile or look angry." Hmm, sounds like a fully functional model-slash-actress to us.<br /><br /><strong>Update</strong>: Video posted after the break that's equal parts creepy and uh, creepy.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.straitstimes.com/Breaking%2BNews/Lifestyle/Story/STIStory_350809.html">Straits Times</a> and <a href="http://www.pinktentacle.com/2009/03/video-hrp-4c-fashion-model-robot/">Pink Tentacle</a>]<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/03/16/japans-hrp-4c-fashion-model-robot-unveiled-already-harassed/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Japan's HRP-4C 'fashion model robot' unveiled, already harassed (update: video!)</em></a></p><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/robots/" rel="tag">Robots</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/03/16/japans-hrp-4c-fashion-model-robot-unveiled-already-harassed/">Japan's HRP-4C 'fashion model robot' unveiled, already harassed (update: video!)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 16 Mar 2009 09:33:00 EST.
