  • When carebears attack

CrazyKinux from The Drone Bay podcast, and of course one of Massively's EVE Online columnists, had an interesting find which he recently shared on his site. "When Carebears Attack" isn't the newest video out there, but given the absolute hammering that miners have been taking in Empire space over the past few months, it's quite timely. Here we see an exhumer pilot named 'JNB' who's fed up with ore thieves and being griefed in general, simply for being a miner. While not technically griefing as it's considered a fair use of game mechanics, 'can flipping' is the time-honored tradition of a thief sneaking up on a mining vessel and replacing the floating cargo container (being mined into for greater efficiency) with his own, bearing the same name. When the miner or his hauler unknowingly removes ore from the thief's can, the innocent party becomes criminally flagged -- ironically, for being a thief himself -- and then is predictably blown apart by his antagonist. Concord, i.e. 'the police' in EVE, takes no action against the can flipper. Tired of this use of game mechanics, the carebear in this video snaps and starts hunting down griefers in a repurposed Hulk, which is little more than a fancy mining vessel; it's completely unfit for PvP... or is it? The footage shows the miner racking up a respectable kill count by using his normally defensive drones as vicious little attackers. It turns out some carebears have teeth after all.

This week's release list looks pretty healthy, if you ask us. We've got some games for just about everyone, including an RPG, along with some action/adventure titles. Oh, and some licensed titles, for good measure. So, what will you be playing this weekend? New game, or something in your collection? How do you plan on getting through this weekend with your DS?

This week's releases only show one title that we're particularly interested in (hint: it's pictured in the post above), but that's not to say other notable titles aren't releasing. Some of you have been following The Incredible Hulk, we're sure, as its promise to let you destroy tons of stuff will be enough to get you on board. Actually, reading that last sentence, we're kind of interested, too.Anywho, what will you be playing this weekend? Going to pick up LEGO Indiana Jones? Going to pick something else up, perhaps a WiiWare game? What are you playing?%Gallery-15539%

  • Gamestop offers an incredibly sunburned Hulk

For comic book gamers who just gotta experience everything Hulk related and will be picking up The Incredible Hulk on June 6th, you may want to head to Gamestop for an exclusive goodie. They're the only retailer who is offering an Xbox 360 exclusive in-game red Hulk character that's so darn red that we'd almost recommend he make a doctors visit to be sure that it isn't the result of over exposure to the sun. Not that the Hulk's normally green hue is any healthier, we just get concerned when we spot anyone who resembles a cooked lobster. [Via Binge Gamer]

  • The Incredible Hulk features incredible voice talent

SEGA just announced the voice talent behind the upcoming (and totally movie based ) game The Incredible Hulk and, wouldn't you know, the actors from the movie are playing their video game roles. Odd. Among those listed are stars like Edward Norton, Liv Tyler, Tim Roth, Tim Blake Nelson and William Hurt who will all lend their voices and physical likeness to The Incredible Hulk video game. You can read the completely complete press release after the break. We also figured it would be rather humorous to point out the glaring typo that was present in the press release's subject line that read "SEGA ANNOUNCES VOICE TALENT FOR THE INCREDIBLE HULKT VIDEO GAME AND RELEASES NEW SCREENSHOTS". A mistake like that would make the "HULKT" green with anger.

True story: We were originally going to call this post "The Incredible Hulk on Wii looks like The Incredible Hulk on 360 and PS3, but worse," but we realized that if we did that, we would be hitting the nail so squarely on the head that we wouldn't have anything to say in the actual post. So ... these screenshots from The Incredible Hulk on Wii look like the ones from The Incredible Hulk on 360 and PS3, but, you know, worse.Looks aside, all we actually want from the Wii version is really good Wiimote implementation, like being able to slam both 'mote and 'chuk down at the same time and destroy everything within a city block. Don't worry, we're not holding our breath. Check out all the screens below, we've added the next gen pics after the jump for your comparing pleasure.%Gallery-20007%

  • The Incredible Hulk trailer looks incredibly bland

We all heard the resounding groan that resulted when fans of 2005's well received Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction learned that Radical Entertainment and Vivendi would not be creating the video game adaptation for the upcoming cinematic stab at the muscle-bound, chartreuse hothead. Well, after watching this debut trailer for The Incredible Hulk, we'll see your groan, and raise you an extremely disappointed sigh. Throwing Ultimate Destruction's havoc-wreaking formula to the wind, the adaptation will apparently focus on our favorite lesser-known pastimes of the green meanie: moving very slowly, getting repeatedly knocked over, and being stomped on by robots. If this trailer is any indication of what we can expect from the final product, we think we'd rather spend $60 to have Lou Ferrigno pummel us for a few hours. It would be much less painful, and he could probably use the cash.(We're joking, of course. We love you, Lou. Please don't hurt us.)

Click to embiggen. That's right, we said "embiggen." It's a Banner year for Sega, with the publisher getting ready to unleash The Incredible Hulk this June alongside the Edward Norton-starring film and franchise reboot. Marvel's green goon will be gleefully smashing things on just about every platform imaginable (sorry, PSP!) in what we hope will be similar gameplay to that found in 2005's The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction. Sega promises that no building will be left unscathed as you do battle with classic Hulk villains such as Abomination, Bi-Beast and, judging by the background of the above screenshot, Mister Clip. • Marvel Universe Online: how would it have worked?

Here's a question I haven't heard anyone ask. I'm a dyed-in-the-wool Marvel Comics geek; I know what both MODOK and AIM stand for; I remember Wolverine from when he wore those silly little eye-wings and whiskers on his mask; heck, I recall Nick Fury heading up the Howling Commandos. So I was pretty excited to hear about the Marvel Universe MMO. I had fantasies of playing as my favorite character (Adam Warlock, in case anyone's interested) until I realized that the game couldn't possibly work that way.Think on it for a second: how many players would want to be Gambit, or the Hulk, or the Punisher? If even just two people, then there's a problem with identity. Even if you were to get around the problem with a suffix, i.e., Punisher213, then the brand has been diluted, and it no longer means anything. So, how would this MMO have worked?

Just about every other high-definition disc player out there is attached to some "free movie" promotion, so it's not all that shocking to hear that Venturer's UK-bound SHD7001 won't be any different. Aside from hearing that the still unpriced player will indeed be available initially in the UK through QVC on December 29th, those with this atop their must-have list can also look forward to quite a few extras. Reportedly, the package will include HD DVD titles Hulk and Troy, a free HDMI cable and a voucher that allows buyers to receive five additional movies gratis courtesy of the European HD DVD Promotional Group. It's noted that customers will have until January 31, 2008 to select their flicks from a predetermined list, but we suppose we'll have to wait until a price tag gets attached to this thing before figuring out if it's worth picking up.[Via Pocket-Lint, thanks HD4ME]

For common Hulk collectors, performing "plastic surgery" on one of your favorite figurines may not sound reasonable, but then again, not too many of 'em have tried to make a 13-inch poseable monster lug around a PC. Enter the Hulk PC mod, which ranks up there pretty high among the most astounding rigs we've ever seen. The project began with a simple store-bought Raging Hulk, a micro-ATX motherboard, lots of tools and a vision. Some 14 months later, the final creation was complete. We can't begin to describe how much work was actually put into this thing here, but feel free to click on through for a couple more shots and hit the read link to visit the beast's dedicated site.[Thanks, John]

We've already let you know that SEGA was having an Incredible Hulk game, but what we didn't know was that it would be based on the upcoming movie. We also didn't know who was developing it. The PSP edition is being worked on by Amaze Entertainment (Shrek the Third, Eragon). Movie tie-ins (like the previous titles developed by Amaze) usually suck harder than a wet/dry vac on max, but the last Hulk game was good, and we're hoping that trait follows Hulk to his latest outing. We'll find out for sure when The Incredible Hulk smashes into stores June 2008. [Via IGN]

Sega sent us a note, letting us know that the publisher is again working on a Marvel franchise, this time it's the video game for next year's The Incredible Hulk. They've announced that developer Edge of Reality – who are also working on the new-gen Cipher Complex due for PS3 and Xbox 360 later this year – are handling console development duties while Amaze Entertainment – known for recent licensed games like Eragon and Pirates of the Carribean – will be handling handheld duties. The announcement answers what Edge of Reality's mystery project was and, considering Sega's Iron Man game isn't looking too shabby and Hulk has had some video game success previously, we're more hopeful than we might otherwise be. According to a Sega representative, the game "will be released in the same timeframe as the film," due to smash theaters on June 13, 2008.

Superhero games are nothing new, but like comic movies, the games seem to be of a higher quality lately. With that in mind, SEGA has announced a deal with Marvel to bring games featuring their beloved characters to PC, next-gen consoles and handhelds. But what can I say that SEGA PR can't say better? Here's what SEGA US president Simon Jeffery said:"As SEGA continues to create more games that are built from the ground up to appeal to Western audiences it makes perfect sense to work with a powerhouse company like Marvel that has established and beloved characters like The Incredible Hulk, Captain America, and Thor. These are icons that people are already familiar with and love, so our goal is to give gamers the ability to play out their fantasies by actually becoming these Super Heroes."I think I'm personally looking forward to a Thor game the most, if for only because he hasn't hit the gaming space quite as often as the other heroes. How about you? Which of these Marvel characters would you most like to play with on your PSP?[Via IGN]

  • New goodies, and baddies, coming to Marvel: Ultimate Alliance

Xbox 360 owners, traded in your Marvel: Ultimate Alliance disc yet? If you did, then you'll be missing out on the opportunity to fork over your Microsoft points in exchange for some additional characters. In April you'll be able to purchase either a 'Heroes' pack or a 'Villains' pack for 500 points apiece, or both for 800. Whoever said that Activision doesn't like to make a deal and pass the savings along to you?The Heroes pack includes: Cyclops, Nightcrawler, Hawkeye, and The Incredible Hulk. On the flipside, the Villains group consists of Venom, Magneto, Sabretooth, and Doctor Doom ... which sounds like an 80s hair-band mega-metal tour. Both packs will include new achievements as well, breathing some life back into this game. Hopefully this is a trend that'll continue for awhile, because we like adding some shelf-life and playability to our games. Of course, we're still waiting on additional achievements for Whacked!, but that's a different story.

  • Stan Lee: games trump movies

As significant as Hollywood has been in reviving the Marvel brand, Stan Lee believes video games can have an even bigger impact on the growth of the comic book label. "Video games are more exciting, more colorful and more complex than motion pictures," says Lee, ""In a movie, you just sit and watch. [In a game] you're not only seeing the story but you're participating in the story."Despite Lee's enthusiasm for the games medium, he admits he doesn't have the time or the skill to play video games. Lee is certainly not alone, which explains why Marvel movies have grossed billions of dollars, while the games have managed only hundreds of millions in sales (hardly insignificant, but nonetheless paled by the film industry's results). Still, Lee remains optimistic about the future dominance of Marvel games, hoping to become more involved with game makers' efforts by contributing to the content and narration of future titles.

Marvel Universe Online caught the attention of many true believers at X06, and now the MMO's trailer is available on the web. Microsoft and Cryptic Studios haven't included any gameplay sequences, but the extended CGI clip teases us with the usual suspects from the House of Ideas. Everyone seems to be grabbing a piece of the Marvel pie these days, with Activision handling the Spider-Man, X-Men Legends and Ultimate Alliance games, and EA attempting to rebound from the dreadful Nemesis fighter. Read more about how Marvel and City of Heroes developer Cryptic decided to play nice in the IP sandbox.

Gamespot has just went hands on with Jean D'Arc, the strategy RPG based on Joan of Arc, at the Tokyo Games Show. Although they couldn't read a lick of any text due to the game being in all Japanese, they did play enough to tell the main game will be similar to other grid-based games, like Nippon Ichi's insane library of great SRPGs. One aspect of the game that seems pretty interesting is when Jean receives damage, she, at times, will take a page out of the Hulk's book by transforming into superpowerful Jean and inflicting major damage upon her enemies. After a few turns, Jean returns back to her normal self. They go on to say all the basic elements of an SRPG are here and graphically, is much better than any other similar game on the PSP to date. Unfortunately for us, there's no definitive information on whether we'll get this game stateside. Keep your fingers crossed boys and girls. (Via Gamespot)

UGO recently interviewed Activision producer Matthew Paul to get some background details on Marvel Ultimate Alliance. Paul discussed the creative process he and Marvel games writer C. B. Cebulski used to craft the Alliance plot, and also talked about how the reworked X-Men Legends technology allows for a greater range of combat moves. Look for alternate costumes and unique gameplay with the Wii controller when Alliance ships in October.
