<p>During CES, Redbox and Verizon <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/01/09/redbox-instant-ces-2013/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">mentioned Google TV</a> among the platforms getting an app and now they've delivered. The <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/03/14/redbox-instant-launches-to-the-public/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Redbox Instant</a> app for Google TV is in the Google Play market, however only owners of second gen hardware will be able to make full use of it. As the folks at <em>Google TV Friends </em>found, it can be side loaded on the Logitech Revue for example and even play previews, however it won't rent any movies. At Google I/O Redbox explained to <em>GigaOm</em> that support would be restricted, while showing off a newer version of the app that will be released after the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/05/15/google-tv-android-chrome-update/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Jelly Bean Google TV update</a> hits and mentioning a Roku version on the way. Redbox's support page explains the lack of support for first generation hardware is because only newer devices have the necessary DRM support, owners of those boxes can install the app from the link below.</p>

<p class="image-container" style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/05/31/watch-abc-app-kindle-fire/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img alt="Watch ABC app with live TV streaming comes to Kindle Fire, skips Google Play" data-src-height="363" data-src-width="620" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2013/05/watch-abc-amazon.jpg" /></a></p>

<p>ABC dipped its toe into live network TV streaming with the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/05/14/watch-abc-launches-live-tv-streaming-philadelphia-nyc/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Watch ABC app on the web and iOS</a> earlier this month, and now it's followed up with a version for Amazon's Kindle Fire and Kindle Fire HD tablets. Unfortunately, despite the Amazon Appstore listing it's still not in Google Play so other Android devices can't get easy access yet. At launch the press release mentioned Samsung Galaxy hardware will also be supported this summer, but there's no word beyond that.</p>

<p>Of course, the same location restrictions still apply no matter what platform, with Watch ABC currently available in NYC and Philadelphia only. Through the end of June anyone in those areas can tune into the live streams, however after that it will require authentication with a participating cable or satellite company. Viewing areas will also start to include into other markets throughout the summer and fall based on ABC's agreements with its affiliates. The Watch strategy has worked well so far for Disney's cable networks (ABC Family is up next), whether its push to bring live network TV to the internet is spurred by <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/05/14/aereo-atlanta-rollout-june-17/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Aereo</a> or <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/04/30/nielsen-preparing-digital-program-ratings-pilot-program/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Nielsen's new ratings</a>, we hope more can watch it soon.</p>

<p>Remember how <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/TVGuide/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">TV Guide</a> relaunched <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/08/23/tv-guide-mobile-ipad-iphone/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">its mobile app</a> for iOS last summer? Well the company's Android app, TV Guide Mobile, is finally catching up with the iOS version thanks to a complete redesign. The app includes TV Guide's popular Watchlist feature, a personalized profile which lets you find different ways to watch shows -- from sources like TV, on-demand, streaming and DVD. TV Guide Mobile automatically links to the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/HBOGO/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">HBO GO</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/HuluPlus/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Hulu Plus</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/TheCW/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">The CW</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/MAXGO/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">MAX GO</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Crackle/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Crackle</a> apps, allowing you to access shows instantly. Another new feature, New Tonight Trending, provides a "social hot list" of what others are watching. But wait, there's more! The app gains a heavy dose of social networking integration plus content filtering, curated watchlists (including topics such as celebrities and sports) and original editorial content. Want to try it out? Follow the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/PlayStore/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Play Store</a> link below, then check out the PR after the break.</p>

<p class="image-container" style="text-align: center;"> <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/04/19/netflix-hemlock-grove/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img alt="Netflix's latest original series 'Hemlock Grove' now available for streaming" data-src-height="403" data-src-width="403" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2013/04/hemlockgrove.jpg" /></a></p><p> Netflix's original content assault continues today with the debut of<em> Hemlock Grove</em>, a "supernatural" series directed by Eli Roth. This series takes place in a small Pennsylvania town which has suddenly come down with a bad case of werewolf attacks. Previous releases <em>Lilyhammer</em> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/02/01/netflix-streaming-house-of-cards-premiere-free/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><em>House of Cards</em></a> chased viewers interested in quirky foreign humor and political drama, respectively, so this series represents a bit of a shift. Later this year, the streaming service will debut <em>Orange is the New Black</em> from <em>Weeds</em> creator Jenji Kohan and the second season of <em>Lilyhammer</em>. Cards is also due for a second season, and sci-fi fans have <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/03/27/netflix-wachowskis-sense8/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><em>Sense8</em></a> to look forward to in 2014.</p><p> We'll see if its data-based approach to picking series has found another quality option in <em>Hemlock Grove</em>, however early reviews suggest that may not be the case for all viewers. <em>Hitfix's</em> Alan Sepinwall referred to it as a "streakbuster" between <em>Cards</em> and the upcoming season of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/04/04/netflix-may-26th-launch-date-for-new-arrested-development/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><em>Arrested Development</em></a>, and a <em>New York Times</em> evaluation of the first few eps notes "<span>it barely gets around to telling its story." Of course, it may just be targeted to viewers with different priorities, who will appreciate its style more than they did, and the company's algorithms are just waiting to dig those people out of the crowd. Whatever the case, with Netflix's characteristic all-episodes-at-once release schedule you can power through all 13 episodes and find out for yourself right now.</span></p>

Drawing on a catalog of rare older (although not necessarily that old, there's a few 90s flicks in there) movies and TV shows from Warner's own history as well as other studios like MGM, RKO, and Allied Artists, the service promises a regularly updated bundle of selections for $9.99 per month. Now available to all after a few months in closed beta testing, there's a two week free trial available if you're not sure whether the selection fits your tastes.</p><p> Not all of the titles are remastered in high definition, but those lucky selections can be streamed to your <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Roku/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Roku</a> in up to 1080p resolution (the Silverlight player for PCs and Macs does not support HD at this time). That's currently the only connected TV device supported, although others are said to be on the way. Not sure what to watch? Hit the showcase section for curated playlists of highlight content based on various themes. For fans of classic cinema we can think of few ways to get your fix, although the (relatively) tiny library of a few hundred choices and focus on rare content may leave most mainstream viewers cold.</p>

Other than a new curvier design outside the Roku 3's main differences are a more powerful processor inside, the addition of dual band WiFi and a tweaked remote with audio out (headphones included) for private listening. Of course, hardware is only half the story and the new player debuts a reworked interface that will also spread to "current generation" players (read: Roku 2, new HD, LT and Streaming Stick) as an update in April. Roku 3 goes on sale tomorrow through Roku.com and Amazon.com for $99, taking the place of the current top of the line XS model. We'll go more in depth about what's new this time around, including a video preview of the new UI, after the break.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/roku-3-hardware-interface/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Roku 3 hardware, interface</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/roku-3-hardware-interface/5688193?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2013/03/roku-3topviewon-hand800_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/roku-3-hardware-interface/5688198?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2013/03/roku-3-frontelevationhigh800_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/roku-3-hardware-interface/5688186?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2013/03/mychannels800_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/roku-3-hardware-interface/5688194?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2013/03/roku-3remotewithheadphones800_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/roku-3-hardware-interface/5688185?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2013/03/searchresultactor800_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div></p>

Interestingly, it's included a key feature not currently available in the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/10/vudu-starts-streaming-movies-to-the-ipad-chooses-the-web-app-ro/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">iPad and iPhone Vudu Player app</a>: users can download videos for offline viewing <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/11/15/vudu-hdx-pc/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">just like they do on PCs</a>, not just streaming over WiFi in the browser. A free app ready for download to "select" Android tablets, there's no word on when or if it will appear on phones, but we're told the list of supported devices will continue to grow.</p><p> Vudu also notes in the press release (included after the break) that as of last month, its <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/12/20/microsoft-rolls-out-more-new-xbox-360-apps-including-ufc-and-vud/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Xbox 360 app</a> has been updated to support <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/02/vudu-goes-live-with-1080p-hdx-rentals-doesnt-charge-extra-for/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">1080p HDX</a> streaming video. Do you really need another reason to give it a shot? If so, try this one on -- all new users who activate an UltraViolet account between now and March get 10 free movies. There's still the pain of creating multiple logins for the virtual locker, but between Vudu and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/04/revamped-flixster-com-gives-one-stop-digital-movie-access-for-bo/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Flixster</a> offers you should be able to snag a bunch of free flicks watchable anywhere on your Android device without spending a cent (or hunting through torrents and the like, your choice).</p>

It launched its assault on the old grid-style layout last month, and an update rolling out is adding listings for more content from Amazon VOD and Prime streaming, plus support for new gestures like two finger swipe between show cards, pinch to hide and more. The "Your Picks" algorithms that attempt to figure out what else you may like before you do have been tweaked, and it can also pull up more information about any show or movie with saved searches and Wikipedia bio lookups. Hit iTunes to give the free app a shot, and see if this is a push in the right direction for your TV watching experience.</p>

ToysrusMovies.com is a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/rovi?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Rovi</a>-powered digital storefront currently available to PCs, Macs and other Flash compatible devices, with an app planned for the Tabeo soon, as well as Blu-ray players, HDTVs and other mobile devices including iOS and Android. The content consists of "more than 4,000" titles from big names like Disney, Fox, NBCUniversal and more, available for 24-hour rental starting at $2.99, and $5.99 for download or streaming. Right out of the gate its scored an early release of <i>Madagascar 3</i> two weeks before the disc release, currently a $16 purchase with "unlimited" streaming to activated devices, with downloads to up to 5 devices. Now of course, all it needs is some compatible devices, but building an ecosystem is a process, and may be key to separating Toys R Us' offerings from the competition. Check out more details in the press release after the break or at the site.</p>

Previous info indicated the service would focus more heavily on movies than the back catalog of TV shows that is a part of Netflix Watch Instantly and Amazon Prime Instant Video, and <i>Bloomberg</i> reports Redbox will break with their models by paying its content providers per subscriber cable TV-style, instead of a flat rate decided up front. What customers will get is a monthly subscription and allotment of disc rentals from <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/redbox?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Redbox's</a> kiosks, as well as access to VOD movie rentals and downloadable purchases through the service. The alpha test is currently in the hands of about 500 Verizon employees, with plans for a short public test before launching in a late November / mid-December time frame. The main unanswered question however is how much it will all cost, but knowing what we do now -- how much are you willing to pay?</p>

Just days after the mobile apps for <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/14/hulu-plus-hbo-go-max-go-ios-closed-captions/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">HBO, Cinemax and Hulu added closed captions support on iOS</a>, a similar slew of upgrades have come to their <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/hbogo,android?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">apps</a> on Android. Unfortunately, there doesn't appear to be any change in the number of supported devices for any of them at this time. <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/huluplus,android?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Hulu's upgrade</a> also adds on the option to share videos via Twitter, Facebook and other services, although the 10 second rewind button added on iOS does not appear to have made the cut. As usual you should see the new versions rolling around in the app store, hit the source links for more info.</p>

Priced the same as as the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/07/19/roku-2-hd-xd-and-xs-officially-launch-same-price-smaller-siz/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Roku 2 XS</a> set-top box, it brings the same feature set but in a smaller package designed to work directly with your HDTV, thanks to power, remote control and data signals fed through an MHL-compatible HDMI port. While it will work with other MHL-ready host devices, manufacturers with Roku Ready stamped and certified HDTVs on shelves this fall will include Apex, Insignia and Hitachi -- Onkyo plans to ship receivers early next year. If you pick up an otherwise dumb flat-panel with the stick bundled along with it the price is set by that manufacturer, but the standalone plan means buyers savings are focused on the two cables they won't be needing, and simplified remote capability since their TV remote can talk to the Stick directly. Like the Roku 2 XS, the Streaming Stick also includes the motion control capable game remote.</p><p> A separate move will benefit many existing Roku owners, as it is also announcing that Walmart-owned <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/vudu?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Vudu</a> is launching on the platform today. You will need a Roku HD (2500), LT or Roku 2 box (or the Streaming Stick, once it launches) to take advantage of the Vudu app and its streams that bring quality of up to 1080p and 7.1 surround sound. That also means access to <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/vudu,ultraviolet?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Vudu-compatible UltraViolet</a> movie titles on yet another set-top box, if that's a consideration, and users score a $5.99 credit with Vudu just for linking the account to their boxes. All the details are in the press release after the break, and on the Roku blog.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/roku-streaming-stick-hands-on/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Roku Streaming Stick hands-on</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/roku-streaming-stick-hands-on/4735542?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/01/rokumhl101lg_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/roku-streaming-stick-hands-on/4735543?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/01/rokumhl102lg_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/roku-streaming-stick-hands-on/4735544?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/01/rokumhl103lg_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/roku-streaming-stick-hands-on/4735545?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/01/rokumhl104lg_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/roku-streaming-stick-hands-on/4735546?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/01/rokumhl105lg_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div></p>

That pain was lessened by Google's promise of a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/08/06/youtube-app-removed-from-ios-6-ios-5-confirmation-official/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">standalone app</a> to replace it, and now Big G's version has arrived, ready to be installed on the legions of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/04/apple-announces-presumed-iphone-5-launch-event-for-september-12t/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">new iPhones</a> to come. YouTube's touting the app's fresh channel guide -- that lets users swipe from left to right to reveal a screen with easy access to their channel subscriptions -- and better search features as the main attractions of the new software. Oh, and for folks with ten-inch Apple screens, YouTube has assured us that its engineers are back in the lab cooking up an iPad-specific version set to show up "in the coming months." Until then, the phone version will have to suffice, and you can grab it at the iTunes source link below.</p>

An update rolling out this evening brings a number of tweaks we saw hit its redesigned website in August, including the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/08/22/hulu-redesign/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">"tray-style" layout of shows, larger artwork, improved search</a> with results that appear in the dropdown and simplified player controls. Take a peek in the gallery for a few screenshots of the new UI or after the break for an intro trailer. Although other platforms weren't mentioned specifically Hulu said the PS3 is the first living room device to show off its new experience, which leads us to believe other devices should get a similar look eventually. Subscribers can take a look on the PlayStation Network to see if they find any improvements, non-subscribers can, as usual, jump in on a free seven day trial.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hulu-plus-ps3-app-september-2012/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Hulu Plus PS3 app September 2012</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hulu-plus-ps3-app-september-2012/5273133?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/1home_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hulu-plus-ps3-app-september-2012/5273134?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/2trays_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hulu-plus-ps3-app-september-2012/5273135?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/3search_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hulu-plus-ps3-app-september-2012/5273136?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/4showpage_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hulu-plus-ps3-app-september-2012/5273137?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/5playback_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div></p>

The refreshed site is available as an open beta starting today that focuses on making it the center of your digital movie watching. Still using Rotten Tomatoes' Tomato Meter as a method for ranking the quality of movies, the new site gives streaming and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/16/digital-downloads-bring-ultraviolet-one-step-closer-to-being-use/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">downloadable</a> access to flicks in your UltraViolet locker as well as direct access to copies from iTunes, Vudu, Amazon or Netflix for purchase, rental or subscription viewing. Of course, while the studio proclaims it to be retailer and studio agnostic, there are plenty of opportunities to start or expand your UltraViolet library through promotions that do things like give away free digital copies of movies for sharing a link to friends, navigating the UltraViolet signup process or downloading one of the apps, which should be getting their own redesign soon. It's not the only site in the business of making navigating the multiple online stores easier -- <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/19/clicker-tv-brings-streaming-internet-video-to-your-tvs-browser/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Clicker</a> immediately comes to mind -- but the backend of the Flixster database of movies in theaters and at home, plus any registered digital copies is a specific advantage. Hit the source link to give the beta a shot and see for yourself.</p>

It hasn't all been roses for the last twelve months, with a price drop in April -- and we're not seeing any celebration of subscriber figures in the blog post -- despite including things <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/29/hulu-japan-hbo/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">like HBO</a> that it seems unlikely we'll see on Hulu domestically. Just like the Apple TV app that <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/07/31/hulu-plus-app-live-on-apple-tv/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">popped up over here</a>, Japanese users should simply find it on their devices, while prospective subscribers are being enticed with one month free subscriptions if they sign up via their hockey puck.</p>

It brings all the HBO current and catalog content you'd expect (subtitled for the local markets in Sweden, Norway, Finland and Denmark) and it's also tossing in content from other providers, like the popular Canadian show <i>Continuum</i>. CEO Herv&eacute; Payan says it will be available on "any" internet connected device, and says the decision to go over the top is because its target group of viewer have changed their consumption to multiple screens.</p><p> Netflix revealed its own <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/08/15/netflix-watch-instantly-streaming-scandinavia/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">plans to expand to the region</a> this fall on the same day HBO Nordic was originally announced, and CEO Reed Hastings welcomed the competition with a message on Facebook asking when HBO would bring the service to the USA, and joking that it expected the first match-up to be in Albania. In case you forgot, that last dig was a reference to Time Warner CEO Jeff Bewkes <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/12/13/ce-oh-no-he-didnt-time-warner-chief-likens-netflix-threat-to/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">2010 statement comparing Netflix to the possibility of the Albanian army taking over the world</a>. The battle is on this fall, we'll see if it's just a dry run for other regions soon.</p>

Like any good companion app in 2012 it also brings social networking features with check-ins and Twitter / Facebook integration and a trending social hot list based on what other users search for.</p><p> The downside compared to many of the apps from cable providers like <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/xfinitytv,ios?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Comcast</a> or <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/timewarnercable,ios?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Time Warner</a>, hardware manufacturers like <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/tivo,ios?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">TiVo</a> or even other third parties like <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/06/dijit-launches-remote-control-app-for-ipad-gives-you-something/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Dijit</a> is the inability to use it to directly change the channel, but perhaps that's in the next version. There's more details in the press release after the break, and screens in the gallery below, if you're willing to give another contender a shot at assisting your TV watching habits, the free app is available in iTunes at the source link.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/tv-guide-mobile-3-0-for-ios/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">TV Guide Mobile 3.0 for iOS</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/tv-guide-mobile-3-0-for-ios/5229732?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/08/watchlist-adage-video_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/tv-guide-mobile-3-0-for-ios/5229733?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/08/watchlist-adage-video-2columns_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/tv-guide-mobile-3-0-for-ios/5229734?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/08/watchlist-adage-video-2columnsgray_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/tv-guide-mobile-3-0-for-ios/5229735?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/08/watchlist-adage-videogray_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/tv-guide-mobile-3-0-for-ios/5229736?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/08/tvguidewatchlistnewsipad_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div></p>

Today, the site implemented TrueView in-stream ads for the mobile platform, and like you've become accustomed to on the desktop, you'll begin to notice these commercials on your smartphone and tablet. Now, we get the need for content producers to make some coin, but the move certainly represents the end of an era. Fortunately, just like on the desktop, you'll have the ability to <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/07/01/youtube-to-intro-skippable-ads-world-to-never-watch-another-int/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">skip these ads</a> after five seconds. Maybe now, you can take pride in making an independent producer rich beyond imagination -- or, at least helping them buy some lunch.</p>

Designed with a focus on making it easier to find preferred content, it features bigger artwork that highlights new programming and a "tray-style" UI that lets you flip through queues of similar content curated by its team of editors. Navigation has been tweaked with a browse function to jump from category to category including what's popular, what's new, or any other filter and an upgraded search bar that lets you immediately play matching content. Finally, the show pages themselves have been refreshed, making it easier to jump directly into the most recently watched episode of a series. There's a few screen grabs of the new experience in the gallery below, plus a video preview embedded after the break, but it's probably easiest to hit the source link and check out the new site for yourself. <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hulu-com-redesign/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Hulu.com redesign</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hulu-com-redesign/5226751?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/08/4browse-1345614419_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hulu-com-redesign/5226752?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/08/5search-1345614419_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hulu-com-redesign/5226753?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/08/1heronewgirl-1345614420_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hulu-com-redesign/5226754?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/08/2syw-1345614420_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hulu-com-redesign/5226755?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/08/3editorialtrays_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div></p>

The app has an improved search with suggestions and instant results while users type, the ability to pull in a user's subscribed channels and it allows for remote control from the YouTube app on your smartphone after a simple pairing process (shown in a screenshot after the break.) According to the official blog it should be arriving in North America now, check under the My Channels section in the PS3 store to download the free app and give it a shot.</p><p> <strong>Update</strong>: The new app should be available in the PlayStation store now (if you're in the US.) There's no word on when it will arrive in other regions, however Canadians can enjoy the Crackle app that popped up today and everyone can give<em> Madden 2013</em> a shot.</p>
