As our longtime readers know, TUAW usually scoffs at rumors, so we've been avoiding any mention of the iPad(s) that will most likely be unveiled on Tuesday, October 22. However, when a reputable case manufacturer provides exact dimensions of a device a few days ahead of an Apple product launch, it's hard to ignore. Not surprisingly, the dimensions show a thinner design that should make holding the device a bit easier. Our source revealed that the case dimensions are 240.10mm (9.45 inches) tall x 169.60mm (6.68 inches) wide x a "wafer-thin" 7.5mm (0.295 inch) thick. By comparison, the existing fourth-generation iPad is a tad taller at 241.2mm (9.50 inches), quite a bit wider at 185.7mm (7.31 inches) and thicker at a chunky 9.4mm (0.37 inch). The change in the width and thickness are the most significant features of the new design. Making the device 16.1mm (0.63 inch) less wide means that the bezel on either side of the Retina display has been made much thinner, similar to the iPad mini design seen in the post image. That, and the extra little bit of thickness shaved off, should make the new full-sized iPad more comfortable to handle for long periods of time. It's widely expected that the new iPad(s) and possibly some refreshed/updated Macs will be unveiled at the Apple event on Tuesday. Red alert! Red alert! For anyone who has been anticipating a new iPad or perhaps a Retina display iPad mini, holding out for the release of the new Mac Pro or dreaming about the mythical iWatch -- the wait may soon be over. AllThingsD is reporting that Apple is holding an event on Tuesday, October 22 -- primarily for iPad announcements. John Paczkowski reports that the new Mac Pro and OS X Mavericks are probably on tap for the meeting, but the focus will be the fifth-generation iPad, rumored to have a thinner and lighter design similar to that of the iPad mini. And of course, the iPad mini might finally see that Retina display we've all been wishing for. Will those new iPads feature Touch ID for fast unlocking? We'll only know when the event takes place. Paczkowski also notes that October 22 is one day after Microsoft's new Surface 2 begins shipping -- so we're sure to hear some good snark from the Apple executives. It is also the same day as Nokia's Innovation Reinvented showcase. Fun abounds! Your TUAW metaliveblog team will be on hand to provide you with information and commentary as the announcements unfold. [Update: This was foretold to the world back in September, it seems]

  • Alleged 'iPad 5' case spotted in Hong Kong, hints at slimmer and narrower body

Rumors of an upcoming iPad sporting a similar design as the iPad mini go as far back as late January this year, when our reliable friends at 9to5Mac shared some clear photos of a leaked chassis (check them out at the "More Coverage" link below). This was followed by an alleged photo of the front panel sent around earlier this month. But as before, cases for this unreleased "iPad 5" have also been making the rounds in China, and we've managed to get our hands on one at the Hong Kong Electronics Fair earlier today. It's the same old story according to a staff at the booth: the case is based on a leaked mold. Oops! Compared to a similar case made for the two latest generations of the bigger iPad, this case again suggests a slimmer and narrower iPad is in the works, which would mean that this mysterious tablet is likely to have the same screen size but thinner left and right-side bezels -- just like the iPad mini. Similarly, the straighter edges support 9to5Mac's earlier leak of the iPad mini-like body. Let's just hope that Apple will still have a few surprises up its sleeves then, eh?

  • Is this the front of Apple's next-generation iPad?

There's been plenty of murmuring that Apple is working on a retooled fifth-generation iPad that's sporting the same design language as the iPad Mini and iPhone 5. The folks over at nowhereelse think that they've snagged a picture of the white facia for the latest iteration of the slate -- and the site does have prior form in this department. The biggest difference compared to the third and fourth generation devices is the narrower bezel that runs down the sides and those chamfered shiny edges, Word of the Day fans.
