Last year's iPhone 4 launch brought more than 600,000 pre-orders <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/16/600-000-iphone-4s-pre-ordered-apple-apologizes-for-issues/">within the first 24 hours</a>. This year, that number nearly doubled, topping one million within one day of the device's pre-order availability through AT&amp;T, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/04/sprint-iphone-officially-announced-on-sale-october-14/">Sprint</a> and Verizon. Those that haven't pre-ordered the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/04/iphone-4s-officially-announced-with-a5-cpu/">iPhone 4S</a> can line up at Apple stores beginning at 8 a.m. on October 14th, or you can try your luck at pre-ordering now, though you may need to wait <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/08/apple-iphone-4s-now-shipping-in-one-to-two-weeks-over-200-000/">an extra week or two</a> to get your hands on Apple's new iOS smartphone. Jump past the break for Apple's PR.<br />
<br />
<strong>Update:</strong> Maybe not a huge surprise considering the numbers Apple announced earlier today, but Sprint has just let us know that it has sold out of the 16GB iPhone 4S in both black and white for pre-orders, and that it's not taking backorders. 32GB and 64GB models are still available in both colors, however, as is the 8GB iPhone 4.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/10/apple-iphone-4s-pre-orders-exceed-one-million-in-first-24-hours/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Apple iPhone 4S pre-orders exceed one million in first 24 hours (updated)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/10/apple-iphone-4s-pre-orders-exceed-one-million-in-first-24-hours/">Apple iPhone 4S pre-orders exceed one million in first 24 hours (updated)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 10 Oct 2011 08:46:00 EST. It's been a tumultuous week for Apple followers, but the earliest opportunity to snag the company's new slab opens up in just a few hours. Without an extended review, we've done what we can by <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/04/iphone-4s-hands-on/">asking Siri to understand our most random queries</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/06/how-much-will-the-iphone-4s-plans-set-you-back-on-sprint-verizo/">breaking down the costs / benefits</a>, and even <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/05/poll-will-you-be-getting-an-iphone-4s/">leaving it up to the masses</a>. Decision time is upon us, so if you've just got to be first to order an <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/iPhone4S/">iPhone 4S</a> then either make it a late night or set an early alarm for 3AM ET -- we'll do you one more solid by linking up the US and Canadian carrier pages below (other international providers have only listed notification sign ups so far, but don't worry, we've got them here too.)<br />
<br />
<strong>Update</strong>: And they're off! As of a few minutes after 3, all the US carrier's sites are taking preorders as well as Vodafone in the UK, although word is AT&amp;T and Sprint's servers are overloaded so be patient. The Apple store went down for updates around midnight (ET) and is still down, but we'll update again once it's open for business.<br />
<br />
<strong>Update 2</strong>: At 3:43AM, Apple.com is finally back up although you'll still need some luck getting through at this point.<br />

The second coming of the iPhone 4? Sure enough, Tim Cook just pulled the covers off of the hotly-anticipated <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/02/is-this-apples-cheaper-iphone-4/">iPhone 4S</a> here in Cupertino, making 2011 the first year in the company's current stint in the smartphone business that it chose to launch three new handsets (Verizon's CDMA iPhone 4 included, of course). On the outside the 4S looks exactly like its predecessor, but on the inside it's "all new." Apple has jammed a dual-core A5 CPU inside alongside a new dual-core GPU that supposedly boosts graphics performance by up to 7x. Up front is the same 3.5-inch Retina display we've all come to know and love, and around back is a glass plate. Those antennae around the sides (which caused many users so much trouble) have been revamped and iOS will intelligently switch between two different sets on the fly to avoid dropping calls no matter how you hold it. Those antennae are connected to a dual-mode GSM and CDMA radio that will let Apple's handset roam the globe while enjoying either 14.4Mbps HSPA+ or EV-DO Rev. A.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/iphone-4s-0/">iPhone 4S</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/iphone-4s-0/#4500034"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/10/apple-letstalkiphone2011-10-04i4s1-0_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/iphone-4s-0/#4500036"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/10/apple-letstalkiphone2011-10-04i4s1-1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/iphone-4s-0/#4500037"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/10/apple-letstalkiphone2011-10-04i4s1-2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/iphone-4s-0/#4500039"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/10/apple-letstalkiphone2011-10-04i4s1-3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/iphone-4s-0/#4500040"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/10/apple-letstalkiphone2011-10-04i4s1-4_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/iphone-4s-the-camera/">iPhone 4S: The camera</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/iphone-4s-the-camera/#4500593"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/10/camera_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/iphone-4s-the-camera/#4500263"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/10/ca1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/iphone-4s-the-camera/#4500253"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/10/ca15_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/iphone-4s-the-camera/#4500255"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/10/ca12_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/iphone-4s-the-camera/#4500261"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/10/ca2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/meet-the-new-iphone-family/">Meet the new iPhone 4S</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/meet-the-new-iphone-family/#4500840"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/10/jrv1iphone4s3upphotosirisprgbdprint_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/meet-the-new-iphone-family/#4500841"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/10/jrv2iphone4suspfwhtphotocropprint-2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/meet-the-new-iphone-family/#4500842"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/10/jrv3iphone4suspfwhtremindersprint_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/meet-the-new-iphone-family/#4500843"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/10/jrv4iphone4suspfhrzwhtcameravideoprint_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/04/iphone-4s-officially-announced-with-a5-cpu/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>iPhone 4S officially announced: lands October 14th starting at $199 in sizes up to 64GB, coming to Sprint</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/04/iphone-4s-officially-announced-with-a5-cpu/">iPhone 4S officially announced: lands October 14th starting at $199 in sizes up to 64GB, coming to Sprint</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 04 Oct 2011 13:54:00 EST. It looks like the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/27/apple-ipads-micro-sim-explained/">Micro SIM</a> (announced with Apple's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/27/the-apple-ipad/">first iPad</a> last year) is destined to shed a few more grams, an <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Orange/">Orange</a> spokeswoman said -- contradicting <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/10/bloomberg-apple-working-on-cheaper-smaller-and-dual-mode-iph/">an earlier rumor</a> claiming that Apple is trying to kill off the chip altogether. SIM cards in their current form have been in use for over a decade (a Micro SIM is simply a standard chip without the extra plastic), and today's devices look nothing like the cell phones of 2001, so it's no surprise that the SIM we've come to love and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/22/official-apple-now-offering-iphones-unlocked/">loathe</a> has run its course. If adopted only by Apple devices, however, a new form factor would be an incredible setback for <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/iphone+unlock/">iPhone unlockers</a>, since an unlocked device is useless unless multiple carriers offer a compatible SIM. Apple has submitted its proposal to <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/ETSI/">ETSI</a> with support from Orange, which says we may even see the smaller SIM sliding into devices next year.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/17/apple-proposing-smaller-sim-standard/">Apple proposing smaller SIM standard?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 17 May 2011 17:37:00 EST. Choices, choices. Do you get the 16GB or 32GB iPhone 4? The black one now or the white one <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/14/white-iphone-4-likely-not-available-at-launch/">a little later</a>? We can't tell you which variant of Apple's next phone will hold its value best over the coming months, but we can try to clear up a bit of the fogginess surrounding price plans on offer from UK networks. <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/16/orange-uk-announces-iphone-4-pricing/">Orange and O2</a> are the first to drop handset pricing and full contract details, but they haven't made it easy for the discerning buyer, with each carrier offering more than a dozen options. Vodafone, T-Mobile, Three, and even Tesco Mobile are set to follow suit in the coming days and weeks, but we thought we'd get the ball rolling with the pair we have now.<br />
<br />
<strong>Update:</strong> And just as we publish this, Voda has gone official with <a href="http://shop.vodafone.co.uk/iphone/pricing.html">its tariffs</a>. We've now broken them down into a more digestible format as well. Just for you.<br />
<br />
<strong>Update 2:</strong> Tesco Mobile has also <a href="http://www.macworld.co.uk/ipod-itunes/news/index.cfm?newsid=3227889">outed its pricing</a> and it's by far the best of the bunch. Check out the full chart inside the post.<br />

<strong>Update 3:</strong> Three's <a href="http://www.three.co.uk/Phones/iPhone">iPhone 4 pricing</a> has now also been made known.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/18/how-to-figure-out-the-best-value-iphone-4-contracts-in-the-uk/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>How-to: figure out the best value iPhone 4 contracts in the UK (updated)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/18/how-to-figure-out-the-best-value-iphone-4-contracts-in-the-uk/">How-to: figure out the best value iPhone 4 contracts in the UK (updated)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 18 Jun 2010 06:49:00 EST. UK carrier Orange has already <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/07/iphone-4-confirms-june-24-date-with-o2-uk/">confirmed</a> that it'll be joining in on the iPhone 4 party on June 24th, and it's just now revealed exactly how much the phone will cost you depending on the service you choose. As with the 3GS, the iPhone 4 is available on both monthly or pay-as-you-go plans, and actually starts as low as free for a 16GB iPhone 4 on the highest monthly plan (&pound;75 per month) and goes all the way up to &pound;570 (or $845) for an off-contract 32GB iPhone 4 on a pay-as-you-go plan. There's literally no less than twenty different price points in all, however, so be sure to hit up the source link below to see exactly what's available before you go line up.<br />
<br />
<strong>Update</strong>: Hey, O2 has <a href="http://shop.o2.co.uk/new-iphone/tariffs.html">followed suit</a>. Imagine that!<br />

Good news for non-America: O2 UK has become the first international carrier to confirm it'll have the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/07/iphone-4-first-hands-on/">iPhone 4</a> ready for purchase and adoration on launch day, <a one.="" hands="" their="" get="" to="" customers="" existing="" and="" new="" for="" easy="" it="" making="" including="" overall="" best="" the="" with="" device="" support="" placed="" well="" are="" we="" iphone="" selling="" in="" experience="" years="" o2.="" of="" executive="" chief="" uk="" ronan="" said="" bar="" raised="" again="" once="" has="" apple="" href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/07/iphone-4-announced/">June 24</a>. After the iPad gave preferential treatment to the US with its <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/14/ipad-international-launch-delayed-until-the-end-of-may/">release schedule</a>, some might have feared the similarly hot piece of tech Apple just <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/07/steve-jobs-live-from-wwdc-2010/">announced today</a> will also suffer from a tiered launch. It's looking like Brits won't have to worry about that particular pain, but it's also curious that Vodafone and Orange -- the other local carriers of the iPhone -- are remaining mum tonight. Is Apple lending a hand to its old partner by allowing it early stock? That wouldn't be entirely unfathomable, though it would be pretty unpleasant for impatient types who fancy some carrier choice.<br />
<br />
<strong>Update:</strong> Never mind that whole conspiracy theory: we've just seen that Orange is also throwing its hat <a href="http://newsroom.orange.co.uk/2010/06/07/orange-uk-to-launch-iphone-4/">into the June 24 ring</a> -- let's keep this momentum going, guys! [Thanks, Blizzard]<br />
<br />
<strong>Update 2:</strong> And now <em>Tech Radar</em> has heard <a href="http://www.techradar.com/news/phone-and-communications/mobile-phones/vodafone-announces-uk-availability-of-iphone-4-694757">direct from Vodafone</a> that June 24 is a go, giving us a complete Brit pack.<br />
<strong><br />
Update 3</strong>: Hey, what do you know? T-Mobile UK's <a href="http://www.t-mobile.co.uk/services/about-t-mobile/media-centre/media-releases/">getting it too</a>. We've seen <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/11/29/artsy-citrus-clock-turns-lemons-into-time-of-day/">lemons power a digital clock</a>, and we've seen an <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/06/16/oranges-recharge-pod-tent-to-keep-mobiles-juiced-at-glastonbury/">Orange tent</a> energize a gaggle of Apples. But have you ever wondered how many oranges it would take to charge just a single Apple? Name games aside, we have to hand it to Imperial Leisure, the company that executed a new iPhone-centered advertisement aimed at raising awareness for Jaffa oranges. We won't spoil the whole thing for you, but we <i>will</i> say that you'll be far hungrier after watching than you are right now. Video's past the break, per usual.<br />

Not impressed yet, are you? Neither were we, but there's some secret sauce to this one: you can actually launch apps on the <em>simulated </em>iPhone. That extra layer of interactivity makes the video after the break a lot more fascinating than it has any right to be, though it's worth pointing out that we don't think the apps are actually usable -- they just give the illusion of launching. Anyhow, don't wait around while all the cool kids are watching it, go have a gander yourself.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/12/23/iphone-in-iphone-app-is-useless-but-mesmerizing/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>iPhone in iPhone app is useless, but mesmerizing</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/12/23/iphone-in-iphone-app-is-useless-but-mesmerizing/">iPhone in iPhone app is useless, but mesmerizing</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 23 Dec 2009 06:01:00 EST. We're just about a week away from the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/iphone,orange">Orange iPhone</a> launch, and if you folks across the pond were wondering what the deal was going to cost you, you now have your answer thanks to a dizzying but thoroughly helpful series of tables that lay out the costs of the phones, plans, and the various accoutrement to be included. Those willing to sign up for 24 months can get an 8GB iPhone 3G for free for a minimum of &pound;29.36 ($48) per month, but step up to the &pound;122.34 ($200) monthly plan with unlimited everything and you'll get a 32GB 3GS gratis. Meanwhile, on a pay as you go plan that same 8GB 3G will cost you &pound;343 ($561), while the 32GB 3GS is a rather more painful &pound;539 ($881 -- haven't you figured out the conversion rate yet?). You know what that means: contract ahoy.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/handsets/" rel="tag">Handsets</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/orange/" rel="tag">Orange</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/announcements/" rel="tag">Announcements</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/apple/" rel="tag">Apple</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/11/02/orange-uks-iphone-contract-and-pay-as-you-go-pricing-plans-detail/">Orange UK's iPhone contract &amp; pay as you go pricing plans detailed</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 02 Nov 2009 08:29:00 EST. You know what that means: contract ahoy.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/cellphones/" rel="tag">Cellphones</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/11/02/orange-uks-iphone-contract-and-pay-as-you-go-pricing-plans-detail/">Orange UK's iPhone contract &amp; pay as you go pricing plans detailed</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 02 Nov 2009 08:29:00 EST. So you've been lusting after that spit-shined touchy-swipey device from Apple, huh? If you're in the UK, come November 10 you'll finally <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/09/28/iphone-3g-and-3gs-to-be-offered-by-orange-uk-official/">have a choice</a> of iPhone provider (both for 3G and 3GS flavors), with <em>The Guardian</em> confirming the date as Orange's launch of the coveted handset. O2's exclusivity runs out on the ninth of that month, but we shouldn't be too quick to rejoice, as Orange will seek to "add value" rather than undercut O2's pricing. Independent retailers Carphone Warehouse and Phones4U are also expected to stock the iPhone on behalf of Orange, and lest we forget Vodafone will be <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/09/29/vodafone-uk-nabs-iphone-in-prelude-to-uk-price-war/">joining in with its own offering</a> in early 2010. The CEO of 3 has also indicated a strong desire to bring Cupertino's baby onboard, though that's unlikely to happen before the midpoint of next year. So it'll get cheaper, just very... very slowly.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/handsets/" rel="tag">Handsets</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/orange/" rel="tag">Orange</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/gsm/" rel="tag">GSM</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/hsdpa/" rel="tag">HSDPA</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/apple/" rel="tag">Apple</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/os-x/" rel="tag">iPhone OS</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/10/26/iphone-3gs-coming-to-orange-uk-on-november-10/">iPhone 3GS coming to Orange UK on November 10</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 26 Oct 2009 08:43:00 EST. Think of it from the perspective of the media relations team: after a two-year run <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/11/06/iphone-uk-set-to-roll-friday-at-6-02/">dating back to the original iPhone</a>, your network has <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/09/28/iphone-3g-and-3gs-to-be-offered-by-orange-uk-official/">just lost its exclusivity with Apple</a> -- perhaps the highest-profile company to do so. Do you pretend it didn't happen? And if you do decide to address it, how do you spin it? Well, sit back, ladies and gentlemen, and observe O2's PR gurus at work -- because they've just spit out a terse two-paragraph release on the matter that makes no mention of Orange whatsoever, and only a veiled reference to the exclusivity loss at all. Instead, they're boasting that they "always knew that iPhone exclusivity was for a limited period of time" and even throw in a mention of the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Pre/">Pre</a>, another high-profile model that's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/o2,pre">about to become an O2 exclusive</a>, closing on a high note: "We also offer award-winning customer service and benefits, which is why more people choose O2 than any other network in the UK." You just had to play the subscriber count card, didn't you, guys?<br /><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/o2/" rel="tag">O2</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/orange/" rel="tag">Orange</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/apple/" rel="tag">Apple</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/09/29/o2-issues-brief-cold-press-release-on-oranges-iphone-win/">O2 issues brief, cold press release on Orange's iPhone win</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 29 Sep 2009 07:56:00 EST. Well well, turns out <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/08/04/t-mobile-uk-sneakily-offering-iphone-3g-to-moneyed-customers/">rumors sometimes do come true</a>. The widely speculated end to O2's exclusivity of the iPhone is now upon us and Orange is the first competitor to throw its hat into the ring. The company has not yet released tariff pricing, but there's a tantalizingly small release window, as availability is promised "later this year." At least there's finally some competition when it comes to the iPhone in the UK, and we can also probably look forward to T-Mobile joining in on the fun. Free, unlimited live TV's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/03/26/slingplayer-mobile-for-blackberry-exits-beta-iphone-version-sub/">coming to the iPhone</a> for anyone who wants it one way or another, we just didn't necessarily expect carriers to be supporting the movement. Actually, it's a stretch to call Orange's new "TV from Orange" app "free" since you're only getting unlimited use on roughly 20 of the 60-odd available channels -- and even then, only if you subscribe to one of Orange's new Origami Star for iPhone plans starting at &euro;42 (about $55) per month -- but it's a start. French subscribers should find the app in their local App Store, and if they'd rather pay on an a-la-carte basis, there are add-on TV packages available for &euro;6 and &euro;9 a month, data usage at 1 cent per 10KB, and session usage at 50 cents per 20 minutes, depending on the plan you're rocking. Orange says it'll work on anything from EDGE up (though we doubt the experience is that great on EDGE) and boasts "high definition mobile quality," which feels like a sketchy phrase. Your mileage may vary, naturally.<br />

Retailer FNAC is now selling free-of-contract iPhones in France, apparently a result of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/12/17/oranges-iphone-exclusive-ruled-illegal-in-france/">this month's ruling</a> by the French competition agency that deemed <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/10/16/apple-and-orange-together-at-last-in-france/">Apple and Orange's</a> exclusive deal illegal. Though the injunction is just a temporary measure -- and has been appealed by France Telecom (Orange's owner) -- if you want to get one now, well, you can.. Those expecting a decent price will be sorely disappointed, however -- an 8GB model costs &euro;799 and the 16GB runs &euro;899 ($1,123 and $1,263, respectively). <br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/08/12/29/contract_free_iphones_on_sale_in_france_for_1100.html">Apple Insider</a>]<br /></div><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/handsets/" rel="tag">Handsets</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/orange/" rel="tag">Orange</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/apple/" rel="tag">Apple</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/12/29/iphone-on-sale-in-france-contract-free-tres-cher/">iPhone on sale in France contract-free, très cher</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 29 Dec 2008 17:22:00 EST. After 13 months into a five-year exclusivity deal in France, the French competition agency has ruled the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/10/16/apple-and-orange-together-at-last-in-france/">Apple and Orange</a> (the mobile subsidiary of France Telecom) cartel illegal. Something that could have a knock-on effect throughout Europe. The agency criticized the Orange/Apple pact for having "grave and immediate" effect on the overall French mobile marketplace and thus, the French consumer, by introducing "a new flavor of rigidity in a sector that already lacks competition." The injunction, while temporary, is enough to allow other French carriers to distribute the iPhone 3G in time for the holidays. Shrug.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/handsets/" rel="tag">Handsets</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/orange/" rel="tag">Orange</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/apple/" rel="tag">Apple</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/12/17/oranges-iphone-exclusive-ruled-illegal-in-france/">Orange's iPhone exclusive ruled illegal in France</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 17 Dec 2008 08:19:00 EST. Folks, be honest with us here -- did you really expect Orange and / or Apple to say anything <em>other</em> than this? Amidst reports that iPhone 3G line sitters at Polish Orange stores were <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/08/21/orange-paying-actors-to-line-up-for-the-iphone-3g-in-poland/">actually paid to be there</a>, the carrier has shot back in order to defend its dignity. In an e-mail reply to an <em>Ad Age</em> inquiry on the matter, a spokeswoman proclaimed that as "part of the excitement around the launch of the iPhone, some of [Orange's] team has been joining customers outside [of the] shops." She also noted that "sales were strong" and that Orange "was happy," though actual numbers were not revealed. So there you have it, now make of it what you will.<br /><br />[Image courtesy of <a href="http://appleblog.pl/nietypowe-formy-reklamy-iphone-3g-wpolsce">AppleBlog]</a><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/handsets/" rel="tag">Handsets</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/orange/" rel="tag">Orange</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/misc/" rel="tag">Misc</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/apple/" rel="tag">Apple</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/08/28/orange-says-polish-iphone-3g-customers-werent-paid-actors/">Orange says Polish iPhone 3G customers weren't paid actors</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 28 Aug 2008 08:05:00 EST. The iPhone 3G hits <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/08/06/iphone-3g-to-hit-20-more-countries-on-august-22-15-confirmed/">20 more countries tomorrow</a>, and while we doubt the hype will match the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/07/11/iphone-3g-international-launch-lineblog/">craziness</a> of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/07/11/iphone-activation-servers-back-online-stock-updates-from-around/">launch day</a>, that's not stopping Orange from trying to re-create the madness in Poland -- it's hiring "dozens" of actors to line up at 20 stores around the country to "drum up interest." Yeah, that's just sad -- especially since there aren't any real customers in line at Polish T-Mobile stores, which is also carrying the phone. Good luck selling phones to your own actors, fools -- when will these companies ever learn?<br /><br /><strike>PS.- That's a pic from launch day in Chicago -- any Polish readers have a shot of the actors for us? When it comes to <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/04/29/3g-iphone-to-be-discounted-to-199-by-atandt/">subsidy rumors</a> for Apple's 3G iPhone, some are more believable than others. In this case, we'll leave the likelihood judgments up to you. Readers of French tech site PCInpact say that they are getting calls from Orange with offers of an upgrade to the upcoming Apple wonderphone. For only 50&euro;, readers say they have been told they can swap out their current-gen iPhone for the new one. Or, say the French, the upgrade will be offered at a "generous" discount. With Orange's recent <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/05/16/orange-lands-broad-iphone-distro-deal-too/">3G iPhone distro deal</a> in the books, we had to give this rumor some airtime. Either way, this could mean everything -- or absolutely nothing -- for those of you residing stateside and looking to bump your iPhone this summer.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/08/05/27/orange_reportedly_offering_upgrade_deals_for_next_iphone.html">AppleInsider</a>]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/cellphones/" rel="tag">Cellphones</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/05/27/orange-france-calling-iphone-users-with-offers-of-subsidized-3g/">Orange France calling iPhone users with offers of subsidized 3G upgrades?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 27 May 2008 11:47:00 EST. Perhaps more interestingly, 48 percent of those sales went to Orange customers, implying that the other 52 percent sold were unlocked -- the only <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/12/18/orange-says-unlocked-iphones-are-in-fact-unlocked/">carrier-direct unlocked iPhone model</a> currently being sold anywhere. Now, by our calculation, this would've been about the crappiest thing Apple and Orange could've done and still be within the boundaries of French law requiring that phones be offered unlocked. We certainly wouldn't put it past the terrible twosome, but fortunately, it looks like the fears were a little overblown; iLounge is claiming that they've confirmed with Orange that the unlocked units are not country locked. We imagine it's not a big deal for the domestic market there either way, but for the good folks in surrounding countries, it makes the sitch a little easier.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/orange/" rel="tag">Orange</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/apple/" rel="tag">Apple</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/12/18/orange-says-unlocked-iphones-are-in-fact-unlocked/">Orange says unlocked iPhones are, in fact, unlocked</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 18 Dec 2007 19:41:00 EST. Granted, Apple sold <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/07/02/500-000-iphones-sold-so-far-but-can-apple-keep-up/">gobs more</a> iPhones on US soil during its inaugural weekend on shelves, but let's keep things in perspective here -- it's a smaller population, a smaller launch, and it's a society that's <em>far</em> more used to technologically advanced handsets. It still seems a bit too early to call the iPhone a commercial success or failure in the local market, but if O2's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/11/19/o2-claims-iphone-is-its-fastest-selling-device-ever/">wild claims of success</a> are any indication, we're guessing Orange'll end up going the same route. With Apple's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/09/28/orange-apple-at-loggerheads-on-iphone-deal/">cutthroat tactics at the negotiating table</a> in play, how could it not?<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/orange/" rel="tag">Orange</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/apple/" rel="tag">Apple</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/12/06/orange-30-000-iphones-sold-in-france-and-counting/">Orange: 30,000 iPhones sold in France and counting</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 06 Dec 2007 01:01:00 EST. Europeans are pretty used to paying through the nose for usage charges, whether it be by-the-minute charges for local calls in the landline days of yore, or per-KB charges for wireless data. The up side is that there are usually some pretty sweet prices on phones, since wireless companies know they can make it up on the back end, but for heavy users things can get expensive fast. And unfortunately, the glorious promises of "unlimited" data usage tacked onto iPhone plans offered by T-Mobile, O2 and Orange in their respective iPhone-exclusive markets aren't quite the revolution we might've hoped for. T-Mobile just posted its rate plans for the <a href="http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&amp;ct=res&amp;cd=2&amp;url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.engadget.com%2F2007%2F09%2F19%2Fiphone-confirmed-for-t-mobile-germany%2F&amp;ei=seolR5ovgrh6sumkwgI&amp;usg=AFQjCNHV6fTZmP_fX6KU73MKKz9-duD5gg&amp;sig2=5zZE2Ttk-oLVyq2SkLdQ3Q">November 9th iPhone launch</a>, though it quickly pulled them from the site. Eagle-eyed observers grabbed a screenshot of the rates (pictured), but what's notable is the fine print: depending on which plan you select -- M, L or XL -- you're limited to 200MB, 1GB or 5GB of data, after which your data speeds are limited to 64Kbps, instead of EDGE's traditional 220Kbps max. O2, whose rates have been up <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/09/18/apple-iphone-hits-o2-in-the-uk-on-november-9th/">since day one</a>, has a slightly vaguer "fair usage policy" that gives O2 the right to slap you with extra charges or change your rate plan if you exceed 200MB of use, though they claim this rarely happens. Details on <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/10/16/apple-and-orange-together-at-last-in-france/">Orange</a>'s rate plans for the iPhone haven't emerged yet, but Orange France has historically some of the priciest unlimited data rates, and has a standing policy to just go ahead and slap per-KB charges once the limit is crossed.
