The Bond 50 set will include 23 discs -- one for each movie and its bonus content, plus an extra containing two Bond featurettes digging into the world of James Bond and the six actors who have played him, plus videoblogs from the upcoming flick Skyfall (there's an open slot in the specially designed case for it as well). The set ships September 24th in the UK and September 25th in the US with other countries getting it the same week. While no price is mentioned in the press release, Amazon currently is taking preorders for $199. That's a hefty price but if you absolutely must have all of Connery, Lazenby, Moore, Dalton, Brosnan and Craig in one box this is it. The release with all the details follows after the break, plus the same trailer for the boxed set, a video reveal of the box itself, and the just revealed trailer for Skyfall, which is due to hit theaters October 26th in the UK and November 9th in the US.

Continue reading 'Bond 50' 22 movie Blu-ray collection details revealed, ships in September (video)

'Bond 50' 22 movie Blu-ray collection details revealed, ships in September (video) originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 21 May 2012 08:41:00 EST. Check out this phenomenal one from the University of Pennsylvania starring a number of nano quadrotors playing the James Bond theme by banging percussion, hitting the piano and strumming a guitar. The room in the video has infrared lights and cameras and the 'copters are outfitted with reflectors, making it possible to plot their position. The result is technical wizardry worthy of Q himself. Reenacting the car park chase from Tomorrow Never Dies is one of the principal ways to let off steam on a weekend. Even in the FCC's secret Washington bunker, our boys in lab-coats like to spread a little festive cheer. When this new HP Envy 14 Spectre was released into the streets, we found it wrapped in tinsel. We'll expect to learn more about this dual-band Wireless-N packing laptop in January, where we figure it'll be the last model to carry Intel's Sandy Bridge, since successor Ivy Bridge isn't due to arrive at OEMs for another couple of months. We're not sure about naming your laptop after a James Bond villain organization, but it wouldn't be the first questionable decision to come from the House of Meg this year, would it?

HP Envy Spectre arrives at FCC, next year's model probably called HP Envy SMERSH originally appeared on Engadget on Sat, 24 Dec 2011 02:12:00 EST. Warding off assassins while saving the environment just became a cake walk with the Jo-Mojo, an upcoming creation by Lativian armored vehicle company DARTZ. This two seat convertible roadster brandishes an 80 horsepower electric engine capable of pushing zero to 60 mph in 9.5 seconds and a top speed of 125 mph -- yet most of its "mojo" is outside the hood. Custom seating, color-changing chameleon paint finish, bulletproof tires, and others are just a few of the many "drooling" features. The sunroof is given a task with flexible solar panels built-in, good for juicing up the batteries while idle or on the go. Aimed to hit the market at the end of Q2 2012, its estimated price tag starts at 30,000 euros (~ $40,000), within range of most low-end luxury automobiles. Check past the break for a video slideshow of this snazzy piece of metal by Gray Designs, DARTZ's partner in the venture.

Continue reading Has James Bond gone green? Sorry film diehards, another ally has bitten the dust -- and this one's a biggie. After years of dismissing digital cameras over quality concerns, Roger Deakins, the cinematographer behind The Shawshank Redemption, Revolutionary Road, and pretty much every Coen Brothers movie, has made the jump to digital. The-nine time Oscar nominee confessed to The Hollywood Reporter that he shot the forthcoming sci-fi thriller Now using an Arri Alexa digital camera and is leaning toward using one for his next film, a Sam Mendes-directed James Bond flick. I'm sure Q would approve -- not to mention James Cameron and Peter Jackson, assuming they can put down their respective RED EPIC cameras for long enough.
Alright, gamers -- time to fess up. Even if you're a self-proclaimed new schooler, there's no way you're passing up the option to flash back to yesteryear in order to play GoldenEye 007 the way it was meant to be played. The Wii remake of the game actually doesn't look all that different than the original when it comes to polygon count, but for those who aren't keen on taking control of Pierce Brosnan (let us dream, okay?) with a Wiimote, there's the gilded Classic Controller Pro. The limited run controller itself is a familiar beast, but rather than being coated in a standard black hue, this one will be doused in much the same color as 007's Golden Gun. It'll reportedly ship later this year within a "Classic Edition" game + accessory bundle for $69.99 (a $20 upcharge over the software alone), but it's still unclear if it'll be available as a standalone peripheral. Not like it matters -- you know you're buying this game, anyway.
Continue reading Wii Classic Controller Pro gets gilded for revamped GoldenEye 007

Wii Classic Controller Pro gets gilded for revamped GoldenEye 007 originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 11 Aug 2010 12:22:00 EST. Just that quickly, DirecTV's come through with some of the 1080p video on demand promised earlier, debuting Quantum of Solace in both HD and 1080p today. Seven other Bond movies in the "007 Collection" are also available (in HD) until May 7: Casino Royale, Diamonds Are Forever, Die Another Day, Dr. No, From Russia With Love, Goldeneye and Goldfinger. The services is still claiming "the highest HD resolution format available for HD video enthusiasts" and one of the easiest to use on demand interfaces, let us know if they're getting any co-signs from the audience.

DirecTV on Demand adds Quantum of Solace in 1080p originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 23 Apr 2009 11:56:00 EST.
We like weeks like this when there is little doubt what the biggest title is. In fact we'd go as far as to call this the James Bond week with MGM releasing the latest addition to the franchise with the Quantum of Solace, as well as some of our favorite classics like Goldfinger and The World Is Not Enough. Also this week Universal has The Fast and the Furious Trilogy box set -- although we're not sure why we mentioned it -- while Paramount has Things We Lost in the Fire, The Kite Runner and A Mighty Heart. Next week the top Oscar winner finally hits Blu as Slumdog Millionaire hits the streets.

Well this is a nice little project for a lazy Sunday. The folks over at Instructables have given us the step-by-step how-to on making a James Bond style "laser weapon" -- though it's not actually a gun for killing people (thankfully), and it's not really very much like 007's weapon, either. Using a CO2 pistol, a laser guide, an Xbox 360 HD DVD drive, a housing for the laser and a circuit board, you too can build a blue laser gun that'll do things like light matches and pop balloons. Like we said, it's not going to help you achieve your goal of taking out all those who've wronged you, and it probably won't get you a date with Strawberry Fields, but you might impress your friend(s). Incredibly smooth video of the project after the break.

We know that some of the James Bond classics on Blu-ray have had issues playing back on certain BD players (Samsung BD-P1500 and LG BH200, we're looking at you), but at this price, we're almost willing to take the risk. Amazon's Gold Box Deal of the Day (read: this won't exist tomorrow) offers up all six of the 007 hits that were recently released on Blu-ray for a whopping 64% off of MSRP, or $64.95. We're too embarrassed to share our Calculus III grade here, but we're pretty sure that makes each film right around $10.82 given that shipping is free. We know money's tight, but seriously, how could you possibly resist whipping out the plastic for this? Who's in?

[Via HighDefDigest]

Amazon goes looney: James Bond Blu-ray Collection six-pack for $64.95 originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 14 Nov 2008 14:32:00 EST. We've been hearing of complications surrounding playback of the new suite of 007 Blu-ray classics since last week, but we suspected the issues were contained. Apparently we were badly mistaken. A week later, we're still hearing reports that players from nearly every manufacturer are having one issue or another, with no real rhyme / reason as to what's going on. It seems as though deck manufacturers are aware of the issues and are working towards a solution, but we're just curious to see how many of you are experiencing problems. Are your new Bond discs causing headaches, or is everything humming along nicely?

[Via CDFreaks, thanks Anthony]

Sir Bond's Blu-ray classics aren't slated to ship until October 21st, but apparently, the box sets have found their way into at least one particular store. It seems as if the six films are split between two box sets (though we imagine you'll also be able to purchase them individually), and one lucky poster over at AVS Forum finally decided on Volume Two. Packed within was For Your Eyes Only, From Russia With Love and Thunderball. Lookin' good, James, and that pair of e-Movie Cash Certificates for Quantum of Solace is much appreciated as well.

[Via CommanderBond]

James Bond Blu-ray classics seen early originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 13 Oct 2008 14:30:00 EST. Someone over at Gadget Review has finally got their hot hands on the James Bond Quantum of Solace laptop -- and contrary to reports, it hasn't exploded, shot poison darts or been used to defuse a bomb... yet. Believe it or not, this machine isn't actually a piece of high-tech spy gear -- it's a garden variety Sony Z series with the usual kit: Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 128GB SSD or 320GB hard drive, 3G connectivity, 4GB RAM, 13.3-inch LED backlit LCD, fingerprint reader, Motion Eye camera and Blu-ray drive. This piece of cinematic history will be limited to 700 units, and it's expected to set you back a cool $4,000 -- but hey, check out that 007 logo! If that doesn't get you some action, nothing will. This babe / danger magnet ships at the end of October, we suggest employing Odd Job to help you nab one.

Sony's 'Quantum of Solace' VAIO laptop revealed as expensive, deadly originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 02 Oct 2008 08:02:00 EST. Obviously, we're a touch more concerned with the kit than the game, so we'll skip over those details and head right to the meat of it. The outfit will be offering up 100 limited run VAIO TT laptops that are emblazoned with a 007 logo on the palm rest and a matching leather protection case. Additionally, a Special Edition Bond bundle for the Reader Digital Book will feature an embossed cover with a 007 logo and coupon codes for free downloads of Ian Fleming's novels Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace. Lastly, we've got the 007 USB Micro Vault in 8GB and 16GB flavors, both of which come pre-loaded with the Quantum of Solace trailer and other miscellaneous "bonus content." Wild guesses as to price / release dates are being accepted now.

Sony reveals limited edition 007 VAIO TT, USB Micro Vault and Reader Digital Book originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 29 Sep 2008 23:31:00 EST. Not only are six Bond classics slated to hit Blu-ray on October 21st, but now one of Sony's best-selling 007 BD titles will be joining 'em. Yep, 007: Casino Royale will be re-released in a Collector's Edition with seven hours of new material, free e-Movie Cash to catch the aforesaid QoS in cinemas, Bonus View picture-in-picture visual commentary with Director Martin Campbell and Producer Michael G. It's Bond time again and that means the inevitable glut of merchandising tie-ins. First out of the gate is a limited edition Titanium silver Sony Ericsson C902 Cyber-shot which does the honor of promoting the release of the latest 007 exploit dubbed Quantum of Solace. Besides the color, 007-themed wallpapers, screen savers, and "spy-style" game demo, the C902 slider that actor Daniel Craig will sport during the November theatrical launch is just like the C902 launched way back in February. Oddly enough, no pictures of the new 007 model were provided by Sony Ericsson in the announcement. Fitting though, given Q's disquieting absence from the film we weren't expecting much. The special features and 4K Lowry transfers seen in the Ultimate Edition Bond DVDs return here, so if you've already got those the net benefit is 1080p and possibly better sound (and a Quantum of Solace movie ticket), although it wasn't specified. Still, if you're awaiting the best looking home editions of these Bond movies yet there's no doubt these are the ones you're looking for.

Six James Bond movies due on Blu-ray in October spec'd, priced originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 30 Jul 2008 18:39:00 EST. Before you rush off to theaters to catch Quantum of Solace this November, MGM and Fox are planning to keep you squarely planted on the couch for at least a few days in October. Announced today, the two studios have agreed to push out a half dozen Bond classics on Blu-ray this October (20th internationally; 21st in North America), each of which will be "restored and re-mastered." The films in question are Dr. No, Die Another Day, Live and Let Die, For Your Eyes Only, From Russia With Love and Thunderball. There's no mention of a price just yet, but judging by how extraordinarily well Casino Royale did, we're sure these will do just fine.

James Bond classics coming to Blu-ray this October originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 18 Jun 2008 12:40:00 EST. As if moving over 100,000 units wasn't enough, those involved with the making of The Departed have yet another reason to celebrate -- right alongside the equally successful crew involved with 007: Casino Royale, of course. At the first Entertainment Merchants Association's Home Entertainment Awards to hand out honors for high-definition titles, Scorsese's latest gem managed to take home the awards for HD DVD Title of the Year as well as DVD Rental Title of the Year, while the latest in the Bond series took home Blu-ray Title of the Year. Unfortunately, these two films (Casablanca notwithstanding, which nabbed the Hall of Fame Award) were the only notable winners residing on an HD format, but we'll be interested to see how all that changes on the next go 'round.

[Via HighDefDigest]
Filed under: Industry, Blu-ray, HD DVD

The Departed, 007: Casino Royale films snag more awards originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 19 Jul 2007 05:23:00 EST. We've seen some pretty sweet James Bond handsets in the past decade or so, with Sony Ericsson playing a central role in recent times. We'll hack up the latest Bondphone by saying that it looks absolutely retro compared to recent models. Get a glimpse of this unit in full after the break and you decide -- does it strike anyone as looking like the Motorola brick phone from the late 1980s? Although the keypad and display have been moved to the side and the "brick face" side now includes a 2 megapixel cam and speakers, we're torn on this device. Yes, it is nostalgic, but we doubt it will fit in that slim jacket pocket. Even the antenna reminds us of a Geiger counter more than a phone. Price? A reported $200, if you can find one.

[Via Just Another Mobile Phone Blog]

The retro-ish James Bond mobile phone originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 14 May 2007 19:46:00 EST. A Blu-ray player was featured in the movie as a result of the close ties so we're not very surprised, but new Bond Daniel Craig is actually hitting Blu-ray twice in one day. The studio is releasing another film of his, the previously delayed Layer Cake, the same day. Both are on dual-layer 50GB discs and feature uncompressed soundtracks, which make up a large part of SPHE's early 2007 lineup, while Casino Royale is encoded in MPEG-4 AVC. Also of note is Resident Evil: Apocalypse, the second Blu-ray movie featuring Blu-Wizard technology to custom select special features that can then play during the movie. Hopefully this combination of high profile movie and 50GB disc works out better than on the universally panned transfer of Talladega Nights. Check the press release for complete special features details or after the break for a list of movies and release dates.
Continue reading Sony Pictures reveals first quarter Blu-ray release schedule

Sony Pictures reveals first quarter Blu-ray release schedule originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 08 Jan 2007 22:34:00 EST. Looking to leave no corner of your gadget bag untouched by its license to cash in, Sony is following up its Bond-themed laptop/digital camera bundle with a 007-branded Micro Vault USB drive. Available in only a 1GB model (Q would definitely not approve), the drive sports a sleek piano black finish and comes pre-loaded with the Casio Royale movie trailer, as well as four 1,920 x 1,080 Bond-related wallpaper images. Other than that, however, it's a standard Sony flash drive, with the trademark retractable USB connector and Virtual Expander compression software to squeeze as much data as possible onto the drive. No word on how much of a premium it'll cost you over a regular Micro Vault, if any, but it should be available sometime before the movie's premiere later this month.

[Via Photography Blog]

Sony announces 007 Micro Vault USB drive originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 06 Nov 2006 22:46:00 EST. Stepping up to the oh-so-dodgy challenge is Sony's own 007 Edition VAIO TX ultraportable, slimmed down to just 1-inch thick and weighing 2.8 pounds in order to fit comfortably in the matching Attaché briefcase. The 11.1-inch machine touts a carbon fiber enclosure, WXGA XBRITE display, 1.2GHz Intel U1400 Core Solo processor, 1GB of DDR2 RAM, 80GB 4200RPM hard drive, Intel's GMA950 integrated graphics set, dual-layer DVD burner, and a snazzy "privacy screen" that blurs all on-screen content to curious enemies not looking head-on. The Casino Royale-approved device also touts audio in / out, Ethernet, 56k modem, a pair of USB 2.0 ports, 4-pin FireWire, MS / MSPro reader, PCMCIA, and the wireless tools (read: WiFi / Bluetooth) no undercover assassin could function without. For snapping up those incriminating reconnaissance photos, Sony bundles in a DSC-T50B (the "B" is for Bond, presumably) which rocks the same bevy of specs found on its less-secretive sibling, but sports a sleek, black finish and the obligatory 007 logo. While you may have got turned down when looking to become Pierce Brosnan's sure-to-be-legendary successor, you can live vicariously through Sony for just $4,299.99 -- but those desirable silhouettes are unfortunately not included.

[Thanks, Will]

Sony kicks out 007 Edition VAIO TX / DSC-T50B Cybershot originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 20 Oct 2006 12:20:00 EST. The name's Ericsson, Sony Ericsson. Everyone's favorite purveyor of Walkman and UIQ-based phones seems to have paid good money to get their kit into the latest James Bond flick, Casino Royale -- and they intend to take full advantage of it, coming to the table with limited edition James Bond versions of the 3.2-megapixel K790 and K800 Cyber-shot phones. Truth be told, we think that diehard 007 fans might come away a little disappointed with the offerings, seeing how the only thing that makes them special is their new color -- silver -- and some bundled Bond-themed media (wallpaper, ringtones, and the like). Frankly, we'd expect a Bond phone to be lethal, but we suppose there might be some legal implications involved in putting that kind of thing on the market. At any rate, if silver cameraphones are your thing, better hurry: Sony Ericsson only plans on making them available through the fourth quarter to line up with the movie's release.

[Via Mobiledia, thanks Allen]
Filed under: Handsets, Sony Ericsson, GSM, GPRS, EDGE, UMTS

Sony Ericsson gets its licence [sic] to kill originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 13 Oct 2006 13:53:00 EST. Although we reported last fall that Bond wouldn't have any delicious spy toys in the upcoming Casino Royale, it looks like the movie won't, however, be entirely devoid of gadgets. Here's what we've heard thus far: Bond will get a new Nokia 8800 Aston Martin branded cellphone and his love interest, Vesper Lynd, will get a white Sony Ericsson K618 (or possibly a Sony Ericsson M600). Furthermore, Bond will have a very tense scene that involves an unreleased Sony Vaio, accompanied by a Sony Memory Stick Duo (are we sensing a theme here, Sony?). And yes, Bond gets a new ride (as always), rumored to be the new Aston Martin DBS. After we see the movie, we'll be sure to spill a <strike>40</strike> martini for our man Desmond Llewelyn.

[Thanks, Juna]
