"Pond will be back..." is the aspirational conclusion to the failed James Pond reboot Kickstarter, which was canceled earlier today after earning £16,000 of a £100,000 goal. "We came into this with little game to show. We appreciate we were asking for a lot of faith from you guys, and our mantra from the start has always been to keep the game design as open as possible, with the fans calling the shots," wrote project manager and producer PJ Belcher about the battered and fried campaign. "This was a risk, and it didn't work out, but I will say a huge thank you to everyone who pledged." Belcher says the team learned a lot from the campaign. "We believe it'll only take the right game and the right campaign to make James Pond 4 a reality. So stay tuned and we will be back with more news soon," he wrote, concluding they plan on keeping the game's Twitter, Facebook and YouTube channels going. James Pond was a series that saw success in the '90s across three games: James Pond, James Pond 2: Codename RoboCod and James Pond 3: Operation Starfish. Looks like Pond needs a better hook to catch a fresh audience. [Image: View Apart via Shutterstock]

Pond, James Pond. The fishy secret agent is set to have a Skyfall-esque existential crisis when the masses are asked to support a comeback Kickstarter next week. Eurogamer reports the crowdfund campaign will kick off on September 20. The financial goal of the campaign has not been announced. Chris Sorrell, one of the original designers of Pond, made a short video on YouTube announcing the Kickstarter and expressing his uncertainty about whether people cared enough to support a new installment. The original series included James Pond, James Pond 2: Codename RoboCod and James Pond 3: Operation Starfish. Codename Robocod was the most popular of the school, being re-porpoised to several other platforms during the 90s. Oh, there was James Pond in the Deathly Shallows in 2011, but discussion of it rarely goes above the volume of a whisper.

Can you believe it? There's a new James Pond game out today! He hasn't had his own game since 1993! ... Oh, right, some of you weren't born then. James Pond is a series of British platformers published by EA, starring a goldfish secret agent who walks upright and wears a tuxedo. It was mostly an excuse for lame fish-themed 007 puns. So why are we excited? We don't know! Anyway, the new James Pond is for iOS -- it's called James Pond in the Deathly Shallows, which updates the gimmick with a Harry Potter pun. James must navigate an underwater maze to find and cover leaking oil pipes, to stop Doctor Maybe from ruining the oceans. James has a bubble gun that uses his own air supply, which must be replenished from item pickups. James Pond is on the App Store today for 099 cents.
