Come January 13 - more than two years after it debuted on Xbox Live - Hello Games' stunt man-focused action-platformer Joe Danger 2: The Movie will appear on Sony's Vita handheld. As we mentioned last April, the leap to the Vita brings a few new faces to Joe Danger's vibrant world including Tearaway protagonists Iota and Atoi and LittleBigPlanet mascot Sackboy. These characters join existing cameos from earlier versions of Joe Danger 2 featuring the whimsically murderous Team Fortress 2 cast and Minecraft's generic block of a protagonist Steve. According to developer Hello Games, the Vita version of Joe Danger 2 is the largest incarnation of the game to date. "Hours and hours of play await across 85 levels, including 15 from the Undead Movie Pack, which comes included in the Downloadable Tours section - plus a total of 35 playable characters," states the developer's official description. Like the Vita version of the first Joe Danger, which appeared in September, the handheld Joe Danger 2 runs at 60 frames per second and features both online leaderboards and downloadable ghost racer data. Side-scrolling stuntman Joe Danger debuts on Vita as a freebie for PS Plus subscribers, and he's due to land on September 2/3 in North America and Europe. The handheld port of the Hello Games' PS3 puzzler-trickster includes all the original's levels, plus ghost replays and the Laboratory dev challenges from other versions. It also has "slightly tweaked" controls including a touch interface for level creation, all of which sounds sensible to us. There's no word yet on a price for Plus non-members - the PS3 version is priced $15. Joe Danger's mix of Trials-like puzzling and ridiculous stunts caught the eye back in 2010, as did Joe Danger 2: The Movie with its near-Joystiq levels of punny titles for levels. On that note, Hello Games says the follow-up is still on its way to Vita, and the No Man's Sky studio expects to have more news on that "soon-ish." [Image: Sony Computer Entertainment]

Hello Games revealed plans to bring Joe Danger and Joe Danger 2: The Movie to PS Vita in August, and now it is offering more details on the games' portable versions. Namely, Joe Danger 2 will include cameos in the form of three playable characters courtesy of Media Molecule. Sometime this year, players will be able to perform tricks on Joe's motorcycle using Sackboy from the LittleBigPlanet series as well as Atoi and Iota from Media Molecule's latest game, Tearaway. Joe Danger 2 will include the 15 levels originally added to the game's PS3 version in the Undead Movie Pack DLC in October 2013. Additionally, both games will include online leaderboards and will automatically download ghost racer data for players to compete with asynchronously. Joe Danger first arrived on PSN in June 2010 and both games landed on Steam in June 2013. [Image: Hello Games]

Both Joe Danger and Joe Danger 2 are making their way over to Mac and Linux. Developer Hello Games has announced the new platforms in a blog post, which details both platforms will be added to the Steam versions of each game "real soon." The Linux version is particularly exciting to Hello Games as it'll be compatible with Valve's SteamOS, whenever that launches. Joe Danger is a side-scrolling racing series where players assume the role of titular stuntman, Joe Danger. He navigates various obstacle courses in pursuit of setting the best time possible. In our review of Joe Danger 2, we found the game doesn't stray too far from the foundation set by the first game – and that it doesn't really need to. Hello Games is also currently porting both Joe Danger and Joe Danger 2 over to the PS Vita. Both ports are due some time in the new year.

Joe Danger's latest daredevil stunt is to ride both his games, Joe Danger and Joe Danger 2: The Movie, onto PCs via Steam. UK indie studio Hello Games told us a number of tweaks are coming to the PC versions, including Big Picture Mode and Steamworks support. The latter is for the games' level editors. which on PC feature "all the secret controls" Hello Games used to build both tricksters. Both games will support gamepad, mouse and keyboard controls. Other tweaks and additions include ghost records of other players for both games, and new levels. Prices and release dates are still to come. "It's weird, PC is actually Joe Danger's birthplace," Hello Games' Sean Murray told us. "We couldn't get hold of devkits when we started out, so I coded my first ever PC engine for the original Joe Danger, and we ended up developing the entire game on PC. I feel like the PC version has been brewing forever - but only played by four of us here in the office." We expect a few more people will be playing it when it comes to Steam. We gave the XBLA version of Joe Danger 2: The Movie a wheelie good four stars in our review, saying that it does the two things puzzle-racers should do: " tug at your need to beat them, and then tug at your need to beat them better." %Gallery-189935%

European PlayStation Plus subscribers can rub their hands and smack their lips at another decent haul of Instant Collection games in March. For PS3 there's Mass Effect 3, Dead or Alive 5, and Joe Danger 2: The Movie, while on the way to Vita are Puddle and Metal Gear Solid HD Collection, which includes MGS2: Sons of Liberty and MGS3: Snake Eater. The newbies start rolling out on March 6 with a triple substitution: Mass Effect 3, DOA5, and Joe Danger 2 are in, while Sleeping Dogs, Vanquish, and Limbo depart the service. Next up are the two Vita games, with MGS HD Collection swapping in for Wipeout 2048 on March 13, and Puddle for Lumines Electronic Symphony on March 20.Those are some very brief runs for Sleeping Dogs, Wipeout 2048, and Lumines ES, which all came to PS Plus in February, so now's the time to snap them up.

Joe Danger 2: The Movie flies onto North America's PSN on October 9, Hello Games confirmed to us. It's priced at $14.99, while Europe gets the puzzle-racer on October 10 for £9.99. Hello Games also filled us in on the PS3 version's '10 hours of extra content' as revealed last month, and it's something the British studio is calling 'Joe Danger Gaiden'."It's actually a throwback to when we made the original Joe Danger," Hello Games founder Sean Murray said, "As our guys sat in a room playing our own game, we fell into that classic trap of playing our own game too much. Our first prototype was this very tight, very challenging game that took about 10 hours to complete. No tutorials, no hand-holding, just fun arcade gameplay."The PS3 version of Joe Danger 2 features this ditched prototype, but revitalized into 25 tough new levels integrating the sequel's Pro medals and extra challenges. The extra content also sees the return of Team Nasty, this time letting you play as the stuntman's bitter rivals. Sadly, it doesn't feature the return of The Nasty Boys, the ill-mannered 90s WWF tag team who liked to shove opponents into their armpits.Oh, you're still here? Well, maybe you should check out our review of Joe Danger 2 on XBLA.

Joe Danger 2: The Movie is riding back to PlayStation Network, with Hello Games hopeful of a release within a couple of weeks. Despite the short turnaround from the Xbox Live Arcade version, which landed earlier this month, Hello Games tells us the PSN version has "10 hours of extra content."Hello Games says it's also working on tweaking the vehicles for the PS3 version, after some reviewers said they preferred the simplicity of the bike. While our review deemed Joe Danger 2 a four-star smash, the range of vehicles wasn't something that impressed. So it should be interesting to see just how Hello Games changes things up.%Gallery-166600%

  • Joe Danger 2 - The Movie review: High-ish voltage

    09.14.2012

Like a lot of film sequels, Joe Danger 2 sounds good on paper, in a bigger-better-more-explosions kind of way. Promoted from stuntman to star, Danger's garage and scenery are now fuller and more diverse. One minute he's skiing away from an avalanche, the next he's jetpacking through a jungle and breaking dinosaur eggs. With an action-packed variety of backdrops and vehicles, the 2D puzzle-racer never looks the same from one level to the next. This is a quality not to be sniffed at; many games would do well to break out of their beloved grey corridors and empty brown plains.Nonetheless, like a lot of film sequels, Joe Danger 2 proves that it's hard to expand on a winning formula without breaking it. Thankfully, rather than break the formula, the game simply garbs itself in a pretty new veil. The sceneries and vehicles are bright and beautiful diversions, when in fact the game plays much the same as before. What tempers this is that what came before is still a bit special. As are many sequels, Joe Danger 2 is a strong pretender to its predecessor, but no more than that.%Gallery-162157%

Joe Danger 2: The Movie is coming to an Xbox Live Marketplace near you on September 14. Hello Games confirmed the date to us today, along with the Admit One fare of 1200 MSP. The sequel to the 2010 side-scrolling racer sees our helmeted hero ride mine carts, police bikes, skis, and even a unicycle in his quest for daredevil glory. When we saw The Movie at this year's Gamescom, Hello Games founder Sean Murray told us the game had a more structured, Nintendo-like feel than its predecessor. Well, The Movie is only showing on Xbox at the moment, where this week you can find the first game on sale.

The only place Joe Danger hasn't ended up is on a Nintendo console. Which made Hello Games founder Sean Murray's statement on the game's inspirations distinctly confusing when he told me this last week during Gamescom: "What we always talk about is a kind of 'Nintendo-y' feel. The Nintendo thing for me is they make it look effortless – they just throw in things. If you're playing Mario Galaxy, you're like, 'That one five minutes, most people would make that an entire game.' That's what I really want so badly for people to play unicycle – or any of those ... we've got skis and it's only like two levels – you want someone to play that and think, 'This could've been a whole game and I would've played it. You know what I mean? But I've just had this one little nugget, and it's left me wanting more. And they move on to the next thing, and the next thing, and they feel like – when they unlock a level – 'I wonder what this one's gonna be.' So we've really stuck to that."Like Mario Galaxy, Joe Danger 2: The Movie is pocked by one-off (or perhaps "one or two-off") gameplay vignettes. "The unicycle has that unique lean thing to stay upright, and it's a really fun vehicle. But we just use it once, don't put it anywhere else, and it's a really cool thing when you find that," Murray said. Of course, if you're just way into the unicycle, you can always create levels just for it in the game's revamped, online sharing-enabled level editor.%Gallery-162157%

Joe Danger 2: The Movie from UK dev Hello Games is leaping to your Xbox 360 in the not-too-distant future. "We're pretty much complete," Hello Games head Sean Murray told us at Gamescom during a demo of the upcoming 2D Xbox Live Arcade racer. "We're showing the full game here, and hopefully people like it. Hopefully that means we're nearly finished," he said with a smile.Thankfully for fans excited for the new game, reception at Gamescom was very positive. "It's been good, so the game is actually probably gonna come out in the next month or so. Something like that," Murray said. There's only one thing standing between Joe Danger 2: The Movie and launch – certification. "That's where we're heading into now. We're doing the final, 'We shouldn't be changing anything, but we are.' Don't tell our QA!" And what about PlayStation 3 or PC versions? "At the moment, we're just showing and talking about 360. We kind of haven't made any other announcements or anything like that," Murray said. But? "But obviously the original came out on PS3 and 360, so ...," he trailed off. Take that as you will! You'll also be glad to hear that the game is a load of fun – expect a full writeup from Gamescom 2012 later today.
