Avalanche Studios will launch a new mod for Just Cause 2 on Steam December 16. The mod brings online multiplayer options to the game, which originally launched in March 2010. Development on the mod first began in 2010, and the developer has since hosted multiple public beta tests of Just Cause 2's multiplayer. The final beta test is scheduled to begin this Saturday, December 7 and run until December 14, available through the multiplayer mod's site. Update: As a clarification, while the Steam page for the multiplayer mod lists Avalanche as the developer, an independent JC2-MP team created the multiplayer mod. The team restarted development on the mod in June 2012 and launched public beta tests one month later.

  • Avalanche teaser images were steampunk sandbox game now 'on ice'

    05.16.2013

Avalanche Studios founder Christofer Sundberg's pictorial tweet teases – generally thought to be Just Cause 3 or a Mad Max game – were actually a steampunk sandbox game the studio was working on five years ago. Speaking to Edge, Sundberg explained it's a game the studio had in development but has now been "put on ice." Sundberg tweeted this morning, "The steampunk game was shut down in 2008. We lost ~90 [developers] in the process. Now, 5yrs later [Avalanche] is doing better than ever." "I really love that art style, and to combine it with sandbox gameplay is a dream of mine," he told Edge. "Fortunately, being an independent developer I can control my own destiny and we'll make something in that world sooner or later." Another "almost" Avalanche Studios project was a "massive, open world" Star Wars game, but that fell through and now is more unlikely than ever. Whatever Avalanche is really working on will hopefully be revealed by E3.

Avalanche Studios founder Christofer Sundberg is being a coquet, teasing what appears to be Just Cause 3 – or a modern Mad Max game.Sundberg tweeted out the above image yesterday, which came a couple weeks after the same character model was teased in an action scene on a bike.Although Just Cause 3 is the natural assumption from the images – since the character model has similar features and accessories to series protagonist Rico Rodriguez – there is still the outlying possibility it's the Mad Max game. We've known that game had been in production at Avalanche under God of War 2 director Cory Barlog until early last year.Sundberg told Eurogamer at the time of Barlog's departure, "I can't comment on our project, but all I can say is that the projects we've been working on for the last two years and the one we recently started up in NY are sailing along like never before."

Forgive us for the least cute post you'll see today with "dress up" and "dogs" in the headline. Instead of corgis in costumes, the topic of conversation is Sleeping Dogs, which offers some crossover costume DLC today, including a vaguely unsettling bald cap.The cap is attached to the Hitman suit in the "Square Enix Character Pack" launching today, which also includes a Deus Ex-inspired outfit and a Rico Rodriguez getup from Just Cause. It'll be available tomorrow on Xbox Live and Steam worldwide, and PSN in Europe, for two bucks or its local equivalent. North American PSN users will have to wait until November 20 to make their game look like other games.Check out the Deus Ex outfit above; you can see a vignette with the Hitman outfit after the break.

  • MMO Burnout: A weekend with Just Cause 2 multiplayer

    10.18.2012

Wait, what the heck is this? MMO Burnout? On an MMO site? Yes, kids, this is the scary part of the story where Massively strays from the straight and narrow, beating a path through the tangled underbrush of pseudo-MMOs and single-player games that are nonetheless related to MMOs by way of a crucial feature or two. If you've been following the site for a while now, you've probably noticed us reaching into the realm of MOBAs, shooters, and mobile/browser titles. MMO Burnout, then, is our latest branching opinion column, and as the title suggests, it's largely concerned with what to play when you tire of gear resets, rep grinds, and being your shard's 3,721st incarnation of "the One." Don't worry, though; we're not delving into Call of Duty or Angry Birds. Burnout will turn its all-seeing eye on RPGs and open-world action games primarily, and we'll do our due diligence when it comes to the PC modding community, too. Speaking of, won't you join us after the cut for a look at the crazy fun to be had on Just Cause 2's multiplayer server? %Gallery-168562%

Forget your piddly multiplayer matches that can be counted on two hands -- fans are taking the open-world adventure game Just Cause 2 and adding a little "massively" into it. The fan mod, Just Cause 2 Multiplayer, promises over a thousand people duking it out on the same large map. The mod was in development two years ago when it shut down due to "many obstacles," according to the devs. The team recently revived the project and has put it through several public beta tests. "Over the coming months, our aim is to polish the current build to a state that can be released to the public," developer Woet writes. Just Cause 2 Multiplayer features both ground and vehicular combat, grappling hooks, and cartoonish action.

If there's a better way of forming one last Summer Camp memory than a 2D, Minecraft-inspired sidescrolling goldmine of fun, we can't think of it.

  • Avalanche founder talks piracy, hires a lot of people with 'hacker' backgrounds

If you can't beat them, hire them, provided that they have the necessary credentials and skillsets required to achieve the task that you're hiring for. That's a little wordy to serve as a business motto, but it's a philosophy possessed by Just Cause 2 developer Avalanche Studios founder Christofer Sundberg. In a recent interview with CVG, Sundberg explained that though piracy is worrying, "50 percent of the people that work for me come from a hacker background." Sundberg added that though some pirates "see us as evil," that "in Sweden the [hacking] scene was huge... As a studio, we've found that there's definitely a lot of talent [in that community]." Also, it has the added bonus of cutting down on piracy, since all those hired pirates (privateers?) are probably going to get free copies of the game they made, anyways. That's just smart.
