If rhythm is a dancer, then <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/09/13/my-keepon-drops-by-for-a-brief-hands-on-we-cant-handle-the-cut/">My Keepon</a> is a goth. The adorable, Snowman-like (<em>yellow</em> snow, in this case) bot just recently received a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/02/keepon-robot-soon-available-to-the-masses-in-toy-form-as-the-40/">wallet-friendly retail debut</a>, so join us in the not-surprised-to-see-this-get-a-Kinect-hack (by way of Arduino) camp. Granted, the lil' guy's moves may be stilted, but he's clearly not the star of this YouTube show. We were more impressed with his gesture-cuing Gepetto's <span style="text-decoration: line-through;">discotheque</span> living room get down. So, do you think you can dance to industrial music <em>and</em> mod this $35 holiday hot toy? Then clearly you need to hit up the source for all the necessary coding bits. But first, be sure to take a gander at the industrial grind after the break.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/18/my-keepon-kinect-ing-hackers-and-goths-through-the-art-of-dance/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>My Keepon: Kinect-ing hackers and goths through the art of dance (video)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/18/my-keepon-kinect-ing-hackers-and-goths-through-the-art-of-dance/">My Keepon: Kinect-ing hackers and goths through the art of dance (video)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 18 Nov 2011 13:12:00 EST. <br />
<strong>Update</strong>: That's a wrap! We'll have it edited and up on the site as soon as we can!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/09/20/the-engadget-show-is-live-here-at-6-00pm-et/">The Engadget Show is live, here at 6:00PM ET! See that little dude up there? That's My Keepon, and it should look familiar if you're a fan of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/08/16/keepon-dancing-robot-featured-in-spoons-latest-music-video/">Spoon</a> or keeping up with autism and related human interaction research. It was just about four years ago when we glimpsed the original dancing research robot by BeatBots dubbed Keepon, and now the $50 toy version we'd been <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/02/keepon-robot-soon-available-to-the-masses-in-toy-form-as-the-40/">teased</a> is finally set to make its debut this holiday season. Considering its <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/02/keepon-dancing-robot-going-commercial/">Pro</a> sibling costs nearly $30k, we were curious to see how well this version made by Wow! Stuff would keep the original's essence in tow. To find out, we spent some time with a pre-production unit and had Marek Michalowski, co-inventor of the robot, walk us through it. <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/my-keepon-hands-on/">My Keepon hands-on</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/my-keepon-hands-on/#4441546"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/09/dsc0002-1315930902_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/my-keepon-hands-on/#4441547"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/09/dsc0003_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/my-keepon-hands-on/#4441548"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/09/dsc0005-1315930908_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/my-keepon-hands-on/#4441549"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/09/dsc0008-1315930910_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/my-keepon-hands-on/#4441551"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/09/dsc0009-1315930913_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div></div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/09/13/my-keepon-drops-by-for-a-brief-hands-on-we-cant-handle-the-cut/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>My Keepon drops by for a brief hands-on, we can't handle the cuteness (video)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/09/13/my-keepon-drops-by-for-a-brief-hands-on-we-cant-handle-the-cut/">My Keepon drops by for a brief hands-on, we can't handle the cuteness (video)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 13 Sep 2011 18:43:00 EST. It looks like <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/02/keepon-robot-soon-available-to-the-masses-in-toy-form-as-the-40"><em>somebody's</em></a> got some competition. So, Spazzi's probably not going to dethrone the reigning King of Cute, but judging from what we've seen of its moves, it could give Keepon some competition on the dance floor. This little, solenoid-packing robot, featured in the latest issue of <em>Make</em>, is actually kin to our boy Keepon, and uses an Arduino (<a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Arduino/"><em>holla!</em></a>) to control the solenoid's and springs that give it that special robot swag. If you've been pining after Keepon, and have some DIY skills, hop on past the source link for the full build, or just check out a video of Spazzi gettin' its groove on after the break.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/07/15/spazzi-dancebot-cant-teach-you-how-to-dougie-but-its-got-the/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Spazzi dancebot can't teach you how to Dougie, but it's got the robot on lock</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/07/15/spazzi-dancebot-cant-teach-you-how-to-dougie-but-its-got-the/">Spazzi dancebot can't teach you how to Dougie, but it's got the robot on lock</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 15 Jul 2011 03:07:00 EST. We've been having a torrid affair with the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/keepon">Keepon</a> robot since 2007, his simple yellow shape and unflappable adherence to the beat capturing our hearts. But, sadly, this has been an unrequited love, as the little guy has only been available to research institutions (and, apparently, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/08/16/keepon-dancing-robot-featured-in-spoons-latest-music-video/">rock bands</a>) at the tear-inducing price of $30,000. Now there's a version we can finally bring home to mother, the $40 My Keepon. It's being dubbed a "toy," so we have our doubts that it can bust the same sort of moves its Pro predecessor puts down (embedded after the break), but we're certainly going to be first in line to find out when they hit stores. No, we don't know when that is just yet, but we're told all will be revealed on February 14th. Yes, Valentine's Day.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/02/keepon-robot-soon-available-to-the-masses-in-toy-form-as-the-40/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Keepon robot soon available to the masses in toy form as the $40 My Keepon</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/02/keepon-robot-soon-available-to-the-masses-in-toy-form-as-the-40/">Keepon robot soon available to the masses in toy form as the $40 My Keepon</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 02 Feb 2011 09:29:00 EST. <div align="left">The <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/keepon">Keepon</a> dancing robot has already managed to win the hearts of most anyone that's seen it in action, and it looks like it could soon be winning plenty more, as the bot's creators have now formed a company, dubbed BeatBots, with the intent of commercializing it. While they eventually hopes to get the cost down to a reasonable level, they'll apparently first be marketing a $30,000 Keepon Pro model to research institutes studying human-robot interaction -- and anyone else with thirty grand to burn, we suppose. Somewhat curiously, it'll be built with the help of Japan's Kokoro Company, which is better known for its slightly creepy robots like the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2005/03/10/actroid-robot-greets-japan-world-expo-visitors-a-bit-too/">Actroid</a> than those of the cute and cuddly variety.<br /></div>

Developed by Carnegie Mellon's Marek Michalowski and Hideki Kozima of Japan's National Institute of Communications Technology, the little yellow bot uses a gimbal-based system to move through about as full a range of motions as two spheres are capable of, and is able to react to visual stimulation in addition to music thanks to some built-in cameras. Sadly, this dancing machine remains confined to the lab for the time being, although you can check out a couple of videos of it in action by clicking on the read link below.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.newscientisttech.com/article/dn11434?DCMP=Matt_Sparkes&amp;nsref=dance">New Scientist</a>]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/robots/" rel="tag">Robots</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/03/23/keepon-dancing-robot-busts-moves-hearts/">Keepon dancing robot busts moves, hearts</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 23 Mar 2007 03:14:00 EST.
