Crytek is closing studios and paying employees late again
Crytek, the developer behind the technically impressive CryEngine toolset, and most recently Robinson: The Journey, is laying off employees and closing studios. Workers' paychecks have reportedly been extremely slow to arrive as well. No, you aren't imagining things -- the company faced similar circumstances a few years ago. But the bloodletting appears much worse this time out: All of the company's studios will be shuttered but two.
Ukraine blames Russians for a cyberattack on Kiev's airport
Ukraine's problems with cyberattacks aren't over -- far from it. The country reports that intruders attacked the network for Kiev's main airport, Boryspil, last week. Officials aren't accusing any specific party just yet, but they note that the attack originated from a server in Russia. Moreover, there are hints that this might be linked to the power grid attacks from December, which leaned on a common trojan (BlackEnergy) to get in.
Ubisoft opens up new studio in Kiev
Ubisoft has expanded its reach once more, this time establishing another Eastern European studio in Kiev, Ukraine. According to a GameDaily report, the studio is currently working with Ubisoft Bucharest on the PC version of the previously announced Tom Clancy's HAWX. Wasting little time, Ubisoft has staffed up the studio with a "core team of 12 developers," led by Blazing Angels: Secret Missions of WWII dev Vitalii Blazheiev. The studio is expected to eventually employ 50 people over the next 12 months, with more than 800 working for the company's numerous Eastern European studios by 2009. Clearly Ubisoft has found something special in the region that it can't ignore. Germknödel perhaps?
