  • Konami ID portal breached, change your password

On July 8, Konami discovered numerous access errors through its Konami ID portal site and subsequently commissioned a report. Over 35,252 successful unauthorized logins were uncovered out of nearly four million attempts to gain access – similar to the Club Nintendo Japan hacks reported last week. The access was achieved through login information Konami believes leaked from "an external service provider." Konami suggests all users change their passwords as a precaution and will individually contact owners of affected accounts who may have had their username, password, address, telephone number, date of birth and email address information stolen from the third-party leak. In response to the breach, Konami says it has "strengthened its security and raised its monitoring level, and measures have been taken to ensure that IDs and passwords involved in these unauthorized logins can no longer be used to log in."

  • Konami producer: 'we gave up the Konami ID system'

While it's not clear if the jettisoning of Konami IDs extends beyond the confines of Pro Evolution Soccer 2010 and into Konami's corporate plans going forward, fans of the stalwart soccer franchise can breathe a sigh (of relief, this time!) as producer Shingo "Seabass" Takatsuka told G4 that Konami's much maligned authentication system would not be appearing in PES 2010. "We got so many feedback from the users saying the same thing as you said," Takatsuka said, referring to the poor experience relayed to him. "So, we gave up the Konami ID system." That they gave up the system on Pro Evolution Soccer 2010 is clear; whether all online-enabled Konami games in the future will abandon the redundant authentication system is still unclear. After a clumsy Metal Gear Online launch, thanks to the Konami ID servers crashing, and Kojima's impression that the system was "not working well," we're inclined to think we won't be seeing it on future Kojima Productions titles either. We've asked Konami to comment on Takatsuka's comment and clarify the status of the Konami ID system going forward.

"Come in, Colonel. This is Snake.""Read you loud and clear, Snake. Did you need me to tell you how to climb a ladder?""I KNOW HOW TO ... forget it. I hear there's a new mission available.""That's right. Top secret, black ops stuff. It's an OSWP MGO GTFO mission, lemming priority.""L -- lemming?! Colonel, what aren't you telling me?""I'm not not telling you nothing, Snake, so relax. Konami is releasing a free mode for Metal Gear Online on January 27th. It's called Bomb Mission.""Bomb Mission, huh? What is it that I'm infiltrating? Haze?""...""That's like a joke.""Be serious! This isn't single-player DLC, Snake! This is a mode for the online part of your game, where one team aims to detonate bombs before the allotted time runs out, while the opposing group attempts to freeze the bombs with coolant spray. Just like the Big Shell mission.""What do you mean, 'online mode?!' Is this one of those crazy plot twists!?""I'm afraid it's much worse than that. It's an asinine blog post that obfuscates a mundane news item by inserting popular characters and tedious humor into a contrived, vaguely informative situation.""Dammit, Colonel! This is worse than that time we found out we were living inside a computer!" Gallery: Metal Gear Online: Bomb Mission

Those of you still keen on Metal Gear Online's multiplayer scene take note: The MEME expansion pack will officially careen onto servers on Nov. 25 (pre-order it on Nov. 18, if you wish), priced at a not-too-obscene $9.99. It'll also be bundled with the previous GENE pack for $14.99, ideal for players still lean on downloadable content for Hideo Kojima's epic most Byzantine.Joining the battlefield (as seen in three new maps) are Mei Ling and perpetual source of mean, Liquid Ocelot. We look forward to shooting him in the, uh ... spleen? What a stupid, stupid post.

  • Kojima unhappy with Metal Gear Online, admits Konami ID 'not working well'

We recommend you read this entire interview with Hideo Kojima at 1UP -- it's filled with great revelations about MGS4 and Hideo's thoughts on the future (including MGS5).One thing did pop up in our readthrough: Hideo Kojima is unhappy with the number of people currently playing Metal Gear Online, the multiplayer portion of MGS4. Undoubtedly, the cumbersome Konami ID registration process, which requires players to write down multiple IDs and passwords simply to get into the game, became a significant barrier of entry."Honestly, officially, I can't say anything on Konami ID and Game ID. It's a company policy. But frankly speaking, the idea wasn't a very good one. The fact is that Konami's direction was that we create a Game ID and Konami ID for the online components, and now we're seeing that it's not working so well, and we have to think about how to turn it around. It was a concept of an online Konami group thinking, so there's not much I could do at the time."[Via Joystiq]

  • Konami ID site stabilized, Metal Gear Online beta registration commences

There's nothing "quick" about having to register three unique IDs to play the Metal Gear Online beta. But, assuming most would-be participants have already got a PlayStation Network account, the real pre-game obstacle has been the Konami ID and its supplementary Game ID. Since the beta (with its laggard update patch) was released for download last Wednesday, the Konami ID registration site has been a case study in how not to prepare for a traffic spike. Thankfully, the site is now back online with a temporary "quick registration" option for those of you eager to push past the bureaucracies and land in some actual gameplay, um, rather, return to the waiting room...[Via PS3 Fanboy]

  • Konami ID site retooled for speed

The most frustrating thing about the Metal Gear Online beta hasn't been the broken beta keys, the huge patch and client download or even the delay. It's trying to get a Konami ID from a website that simply refuses to work. Thankfully, that's in the past. Konami has retooled the ID registration website to be much more streamline and, as a result, much faster for all involved. So if you haven't managed to get your hands on a Konami ID, now's your chance. Make sure you get one before Friday the 25th so that you can jump straight in once the beta begins. So long as it doesn't get delayed again, that is.
