  • Portable SNES vs. portable SNES

Earlier this year, we featured one of the above SNES mods (the one on the right), and now, one of our favorite modders has thrown his hat into the portable SNES ring. The SNES on the left, by kotomi, is the latest in a long line of great-looking mods featured on his site. But unless you're some sort of ambidextrous, giant-handed mutant freak, you probably can't play two of these at once, and that means you have to choose. Which one do you prefer: kotomi's, or, uh, the other guy's? Unfortunately, we don't know his/her name, though we wish we did!%Poll-22088%

Genius modder Kotomi is at it again. A couple of years ago, he redid a DS Phat in the old Famicom colors -- his favorite console, apparently -- but as he recently came into some free time, he realized it was time to live in the now. At least, as "now" as you can be when doing a modern system over in the colors of a retro console. With a black DS Lite as his base, the modder worked his magic, and the result is simply stunning (and shiny!). Kotomi says he's got some more projects in the pipeline at present, so we'll be keeping an eye on this master. Want more? We've got a few of his other, older projects in the gallery below. %Gallery-25220%

  • NES cart becomes NES system

If you don't think this is awesome, you should have the nearest human being check you for a pulse. French modder Kotomi, who you might recall made some pretty awesome DS and Wii-based stuff, has put his skills to the test and managed to fit the guts of a NES into a Super Mario Bros. cartridge. Pretty impressive, if we may say so.But, Kotomi, buddy, pal, couldn't you have gone with a game that was, oh, a bit crappier? Sure, Super Mario Bros. is a fairly common NES game, we get that, but if it were us, we'd probably find the worst NES game we could and rip the innards out of that. It sure would be satisfying to rip out the guts of a crappy NES game. But, hey, that's just us.[Via Technabob]

So let's say that you're a Nintendo fan to the end, but you just really like the look of the Playstation 2. We're gonna guess that you're not alone, since French modder extraordinaire Kotomi fused the functionality of the first with the look of the latter. The original NEStation was shown in February of 2006, but Kotomi's been going through his collection of late, so we thought we might show this one off. Even if you've seen it before, it's worth a moment of ogling time.

It's been a while since we've seen anything from one of our favorite modders, the French Kotomi, but there's been a re-emergence ... along with a chance to get your hands on one of the spectacular original mods. And by original, we mean original, as in early in his DS-modding career. Don't expect it to be cheap, though -- this 1UP mushroom mod is going for €150, which translates to about $217 in U.S. terms. For that kind of money, we're not sure we want to do more than just admire it from afar.

Promotional Consideration is a weekly feature about the Nintendo DS advertisements you usually flip past, change the channel on, or just tune out.Gunpei Yokoi, the same engineer who would eventually go on to father the Game Boy and Metroid, was riding home one evening on a bullet train when he spotted a bored businessman randomly pressing buttons on an LCD calculator to entertain himself. Believing that commuters would enjoy passing the time with handheld video games, Yokoi soon developed a set of portable gaming systems which also doubled as watches/alarms -- the Game & Watch. This week, we'll take a look at several ads for the fourth Game & Watch series, the Multi Screen, whose clamshell case and vertically stacked screens would later serve as inspiration for the Nintendo DS's design.

  • Forget Virtual Console, try the Wii SNES mod

We've blogged about French case modder Kotomi before, but this one is special. It's not just a fresh coat of paint on an aging console -- a temporary elixir of gaming youth -- but rather a conceptual reimagining. Kotomi has crammed a Super Nintendo into the diminutuve and distinct stylings of Nintendo's latest console, the Wii. If you've been gobbling up Virtual Console titles faster than you can say "how many Wii points?" we'd recommend yard sale bounty coupled with a classic console. The Wii case? While not necessary, it has a certain je ne sais quoi, no?[Via Wii Fanboy]

While the Virtual Console has certainly been a big part of the Wii's success, it wasn't enough for crazy DS modder extraordinaire Kotomi. His "Nintendo Super Nii" is one part Wii shell, a couple parts SNES guts, and a big ol' scoop of blue LED goodness. All you need now is the real classic controller (none of this new-school Wii stuff) and you'll be rocking some of that Mode 7 magic in no time. Peep the read link for another shot of this totally sweet mod. The Super Nii does not support DVD playback.[Via Wii Fanboy]

  • Wii-SNES mod: take that, Virtual Console!

Kotomi, the French mod master we've featured many times on DS Fanboy has finally turned his sights onto the Wii, and the result is beautiful to behold. Forget the Virtual Console -- you can just snap your old SNES carts right in there and throw down. All you need is a classic controller and a lot of extra time. Kotomi has been working on this mod since February, and it was originally planned as an NES mod, but along the way, he gave in to the pervasive allure of the Super NES.

  • Five things to do with your Phat

February must be the official month when we compile lists of DS Phat mods, since they're just busting out all over, continually tempting us to break out the sandpaper and the paint. Today's list, courtesy of TechEBlog, details their choices for the top five Phat mods ... but it's mostly the Kotomi show. Though most of these aren't new, the gorgeous Zelda mods always give us pause. Are these the kind of mods you guys prefer, or do you like something with a little more light or personality? Or are you into making your DS more useful instead of more attractive?

  • Kotomi's Ninty case mods are the cat's pajamas

Kotomi is a French case modder, and the above are three of his more recent creations. First, a pair of DS Phats so beautiful, you'll forget all about their new, slimmer sibling. The Zelda DS features a custom paint job, and a Triforce etched in relief on the cover. The next is a Sega Mega Drive-themed DS painted in black featuring the defining "16-BIT" text on the front, strange, ugly font intact. Most impressive is his NES casemod. Now, before you all start screaming about how he used an Imperial Japanese flag and how insensitive it was of him, hear the guy out. Clumsy machine translated text follows:"Inspired by Japan and the famous flags of the kamikazes, it takes again the graphic style of it..."Entirely smoothed, it is seen cut out of a circle covered with a red plate above, a small vent to replace the original and thus to air the system. The circle, which represents the sun, is illuminated when the machine is on by a circle of light manufactured for the occasion."Sacrebleu! This guy's console canvases are beautiful! What's next, Kotomi?[Via Aeropause and TechEblog]
