That's to say that a diminished form factor often doesn't bring the "best things" with it. For example, Sony's NXT family members, revealed between <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/09/sony-xperia-arc-s-hands-on/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">CES</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/02/29/sonys-2012-xperia-series-gets-together-for-awkward-family-portr/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">MWC</a>, gifted consumers with the choice of three new handsets: the Xperia P, S and U. The last one in that list is by far the smallest, and in congruence with the general trend of mobile technology, the most lightly armored.</p><p> However, we're not ones to make assumptions, and heaven forbid we pre-judge something based on size alone. We're as willing to be surprised as anyone, and the new baby of the Sony bunch is as likely a candidate as any to throw us a curveball. Our <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/02/26/sony-xperia-u-hands-on/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">initial impressions</a> in Barcelona were largely positive, so this review -- as the firm says on its marketing material for the phone -- is all about (the Xperia) U.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-xperia-u-review/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Sony Xperia U review</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-xperia-u-review/5061436?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/06/jtmg4525800_thumbnail.jpg" alt="Sony Xperia U review" title="Sony Xperia U review" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-xperia-u-review/5061437?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/06/jtmg4522800_thumbnail.jpg" alt="Sony Xperia U review" title="Sony Xperia U review" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-xperia-u-review/5061438?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/06/jtmg4521800_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-xperia-u-review/5061439?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/06/jtmg4520800_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-xperia-u-review/5061440?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/06/jtmg4519800_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div></p>

Fortunately, those brave boys down in the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/fcc?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">FCC's</a> underground bunker decided to dissect the handset and delve into its internals, where we can still see some of that Ericsson branding -- presumably it doesn't see any harm in using up some of its old parts if they're hidden from view. Old-timey livery issues aside, the appearance of the handset bodes that all is on schedule for arrival in the second quarter of the year. <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-xperia-u-internal-gallery/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Sony Xperia U internal gallery</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-xperia-u-internal-gallery/4986094?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/04/screen-shot-2012-04-25-at-14.35.55_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-xperia-u-internal-gallery/4986095?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/04/screen-shot-2012-04-25-at-14.35.59_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-xperia-u-internal-gallery/4986096?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/04/screen-shot-2012-04-25-at-14.36.02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-xperia-u-internal-gallery/4986097?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/04/screen-shot-2012-04-25-at-14.36.05_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-xperia-u-internal-gallery/4986098?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/04/screen-shot-2012-04-25-at-14.36.09_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div></p>

The 3.5-inch phone offers up a Reality Display, a 1GHz dual-core processor and five megapixel camera. According to Sony, the handset should get up to six and a half hours of talk time and will, sadly, be rocking Gingerbread at launch, though for what it's worth, a planned upgrade to ICS has been announced. The <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/09/sony-xperia-arc-s-hands-on/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Xperia S's</a> younger sibling will be hitting shelves some time in Q2. We'll be sure to give some hands-on impressions of the forthcoming phone as soon as humanly possible.

Sixteen crystal-clear images show the new sibling -- none other than the previously seen <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/22/leaked-sony-image-st25i-kumquat/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">ST25i</a>, aka <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/25/sony-st25i-kumquat-leaves-fruity-name-behind-becomes-xperia-u/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Xperia U</a> or Kumquat -- snuggled up to the Xperia S. As it appears, the handset will likely be a lower-end offering in the Xperia lineup: it's said to feature a 3.5-inch FWVGA (854 x 480) Reality Display, a 1GHz dual-core CPU, Exmor R sensor with 720p video capture and a tiny user-replaceable 1,290mAh battery. Oh, and Android 2.3.7 is rumored, though the rumor specifically mentions it will soon be upgraded to ICS. If these whispers turn out to be accurate, the U will likely be pitched as a smaller and less expensive option for fans of the Xperia S's design. Also, we don't foresee the device's Sony Ericsson branding to make an appearance at the show, given the two companies' <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/02/15/sony-finalizes-divorce-with-ericsson-renames-itself-sony-mobile/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">recent divorce</a>. A document found on the website of Indonesia's FCC equivalent lists the handset as the Xperia U ST25i, which lines up nicely with Sony's existing <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/09/sony-xperia-arc-s-hands-on/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">LT26i Xperia S</a> nomenclature. Of course this also makes us wonder if Sony's planning to follow in Samsung's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/24/samsung-debuts-new-galaxy-lineup-refines-naming-strategy-along/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Galaxy-branded footsteps</a> by creating an orchard of Xperia models. We'll just have to wait and see, right?

If this is true, it looks like one of the jilted partners in the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/19/sony-ericsson-317-million-loss/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Sony Ericsson</a> split is doing all it can to ruin the nice surprises planned for next month's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/MWC?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">MWC</a>. An image has appeared at <em>Xperia Blog</em> that purports to be of the ST25i Kumquat, which, if you've been paying attention is the cheapest of the three phones due in April listed on the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/18/leaked-sony-2012-smartphone-roadmap/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">leaked roadmap</a> from a few days ago. The design language matches the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/06/sony-ericssons-nozomi-gets-handled-something-awfully-similar-g/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Nozomi</a> and the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/09/sony-xperia-arc-s-hands-on/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Xperia S</a> we played with at <a href="http://www.engadget.com/ces/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">CES</a>, but the on-screen icons are clearly bigger: pointing us in the direction of this having a cheaper display (with a worse resolution) than its brothers. Don't let that Sony Ericsson logo fool you either, the company's producing versions that bear both branding, at least for this set of releases. We're off to grab a microscope and see if we can't glean any more facts from the snap.<br /><br />[Thanks, Joseph]
