In addition to the new PSP Legend of Heroes game, the Vita remake of Ys IV, and another mysterious PSP project, Nihon Falcom has another game in store -- a Vita update of the PSP Legend of Heroes: Zero no Kiseki (the second game in the PSP trilogy that started with Trails in the Sky). Zero no Kiseki Full Voice Version will have voice acting (obviously), though the new site specifies only "event scenes." It's likely to have other enhancements as well, as it's a collaboration between three companies: Falcom, Chara-Ani (which sells tie-in goods for games and anime), and Pyramid (a company that appears to assist with game development, with roles in the creation of the Patapon games and El Shaddai). Neither version of Zero no Kiseki has been announced for North America yet; hopefully Trails in the Sky publisher Xseed will just go ahead and license them both at once.

Nihon Falcom, creator of the Ys and Dragon Slayer series, has ardently supported the PSP with games, and will continue this trend into the next generation. According to an interview with Dengeki PlayStation magazine summarized by Andriasang, Falcom is developing a new role-playing game for the NGP, for release in that system's launch window. Dengeki also announced a sequel to Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky, a game that happens to be coming out on PSP in North America. The sequel's name translates to Legend of Heroes: Trails of Blue. If you'd like to read more -- a lot more -- about that series, we can help with that. [Image: The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky]

PSP owners have a lot of RPGs to look forward to. XSEED has announced a new partnership with Nihon Falcom that promises to bring six new games for the North American audience. Ys Seven, Ys: The Oath in Felghana, and Ys I & II Chronicles will all arrive on PSP, with Ys Seven the first title to be released under this new agreement. According to the press release, Ys Seven is the first iteration of the long-running JRPG franchise to be built "specifically for the PSP system," promising "virtually no load times" -- a problem that has plagued many of Falcom's previous PSP efforts. In addition to Ys, XSEED will also be publishing the next three chapters of The Legend of Heroes saga (known as Sora no Kiseki in Japan). "I couldn't be more pleased to announce a partnership with a development studio as renown by gamers for consistently putting out quality titles as Falcom," Jun Iwasaki, President of XSEED Games, said in the press release. "Their titles have always been some of the most requested titles so it is going to be our pleasure to oblige the North American fans by delivering an amazing line up of in-depth and gripping RPGs."%Gallery-93055%

Unlike in America, the Legend of Heroes franchise in Japan is quite popular. So much so that a new collector's UMD is coming out to satiate the series' hardcore fan base. Included on the bonus UMD are cutscenes, wallpapers, background music and themes. Officially dubbed Sora no Kiseki: Material Collection Portable, we guarantee this will never, ever get a release outside of Japan.[Via PSPHyper]

While some critics have panned the Legend of Heroes franchise, I know many PSP owners love Falcom's RPG series (including my fiancee). Fans of the series should be pleased then to know that the next installment is going to be a huge affair. How huge? Two UMDs huge. You read that right. The next Legend of Heroes will be the first non-golf game to span multiple UMDs. Not a whole lot else is known, other than it seems like the game will feature some 3D elements, will have new characters, and will hit Japan in September. So who among our readers is a Legend of Heroes fan? Do you think this is just the start of multi-UMD releases? For those interested, screens after the jump ...

The number of RPGs scheduled to come out this year on PSP would not be able to be counted on two hands. In fact, you'd need more than three hands to count them and then you're in Goro territory. Point is, if you're an RPG fan, PSP is the system to own this year. Don't believe me? Well here's the list of RPGs coming out in 2007 according to IGN's release list: JanuaryLegend of the Heroes III: Song of the Ocean FebruaryGurumin: A Monstrous AdventureMonster Kingdom: Jewel Summoner MarchValhalla KnightsDungeons & Dragons: Tactics AprilThe Elder Scrolls Travels: OblivionRiviera Quarter 2Alien Syndrome Quarter 4DC Universe RPG TBA 2007Legend of the River KingFar East of Eden: The Fourth ApocalypseLandstalkerHarvest Moon Boy & GirlCrisis Core: Final Fantasy VIIJeanne d'ArcFinal Fantasy Tactics I don't even want to know what the collective amount of hours all these RPGs would take to beat. Which of these are you looking forward to playing most?

Just like Bleach on the PSP, some franchises seem to get new versions on a much too frequent basis. Such is the case for Namco Bandai's upcoming US release of Falcom's latest RPG, Legend of Heroes III: Song of the Ocean. The series hasn't been too strong at earning critical acclaim, but it doesn't seem like most PSP RPGs can. Considering how PSP owners will have to wait quite a while before either Crisis Core or Final Fantasy Tactics come out, will the latest Legend of Heroes be able to satisfy the RPG urge? We'll find out when it comes out in January.See more screenshots after the cut.See also:Legend of Heroes trailer

The Legend of Heroes series keeps on coming back for more on the PSP, even though the previous ones haven't met critical acclaim. The upcoming Sora no Kiseki, the sixth game in the Legend of Heroes series, hits Japan in September, and it looks a lot like all the other games that Falcom makes. It's currently not headed towards the States, but I'm sure Bandai Namco will bring it over here one day or another.
