Remember the good old days with your <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/virtual+pet">virtual pets</a> on your keyring? Well, how about an injection of life that actually roams around inside your phone? Some dude in China had this exact idea -- probably inspired by the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/08/08/lg-gd900-crystal-gets-handled-dipped-in-water/">waterproof LG GD900 Crystal in a fish tank</a> -- and popped open the hollow keypad of his own <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/lg+gd900/">Crystal</a>, slapped in two unfortunate little neon tetras, squeezed in some water and snap! There's no mention on how long the poor things can survive in there for, but chances are PETA will be after your backside well before something goes wrong. We also went through the warranty paperwork, and honestly, we think this gentleman might be in a fishy area here. Video of the mod after the break, if you dare.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/10/17/lg-gd900-crystal-makes-a-very-portable-fish-tank-peta-magnet/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>LG GD900 Crystal makes a very portable fish tank, PETA magnet</em></a></p><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/lg/" rel="tag">LG</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/misc/" rel="tag">Misc</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/10/17/lg-gd900-crystal-makes-a-very-portable-fish-tank-peta-magnet/">LG GD900 Crystal makes a very portable fish tank, PETA magnet</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Sat, 17 Oct 2009 01:42:00 EST. It's really a shame this isn't an out of box feature, but some ingenious modder has graced LG's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/GD900/">GD900</a> Crystal phone -- you know, the one with the gesture-based transparent keypad -- with a custom water-resistant case that renders it perfect for swimming with the fishes. And so they did just that, dipping it into a fish tank. It'd make for one insanely hip charging dock, but we digress. Meanwhile in Russia, <i>mobile@mail.ru </i>has delivered some impressions on the device, with good words to say for the keypad's gestures but lamenting it's $899 suggested price tag, a figure higher than even the super sexy BL40 Chocolate. Aquatic footage is six feet under after the break, and hit up the read link below for the machine-translated impressions.<br />

<div align="left">We've been fairly intrigued about LG's <a href="http://www.engadgetmobile.com/tag/GD900/">GD900</a> since we had a glimpse of it behind glass at <a href="http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2009/02/19/lg-gd900-eyes-on-now-with-video/">Mobile World Congress</a> this year. We were finally treated to a proper tour by LG's Martin Valdez who not only did a bang up job of demonstrating the set but covered up what may be an early build firmware bug with such aplomb he deserves an award for his performance. Notable here is the clear keypad that acts as input device for typing, text recognition, gestures, and the full-on gorgeous UI. While we wouldn't expect this to be a monster seller at the carriers, it will get LG some attention. So sit back, relax, and enjoy a few minutes with LG's transparent beauty and a great showman, Martin Valdez.</div>

There's not a whole lot to look at with the <a href="http://www.engadgetmobile.com/tag/GD900/">GD900</a> slider, but in this case, that's <em>exactly</em> the effect LG was shooting for. The high-design phone was being carefully guarded by plastic and metal not its own at MWC this week, making a true hands-on impossible -- but the good news is that we were able to get a good look at the phone's headline feature. That nearly transparent keypad has a glow applied around its edges to illuminate etched numbers, but with tactile feedback hovering near zero, this is a situation where you've really got to value form over function (and in this case, we just might). Interestingly, documentation by the GD900 says it'll start launching in May, though LG's press documentation claims we won't see it until the second half of the year -- so it's unclear when you'll be able to get one imported. Question is, do you really want people to see your cheek while you're on the horn?<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/we-kinda-see-lgs-transparent-gd900-in-the-flesh/">We kinda see LG's transparent GD900 in the flesh</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/we-kinda-see-lgs-transparent-gd900-in-the-flesh/#1363363"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/02/gd900-mwc09-1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/we-kinda-see-lgs-transparent-gd900-in-the-flesh/#1363364"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/02/gd900-mwc09-2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/we-kinda-see-lgs-transparent-gd900-in-the-flesh/#1363365"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/02/gd900-mwc09-3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/we-kinda-see-lgs-transparent-gd900-in-the-flesh/#1363366"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/02/gd900-mwc09-4_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Via <a href="http://es.engadget.com/2009/02/16/un-vistazo-fugaz-al-lg-gd900-mwc-09/">Engadget Spanish</a>]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/cellphones/" rel="tag">Cellphones</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/02/16/eyes-on-with-the-well-camouflaged-lg-gd900/">Eyes-on with the well-camouflaged LG GD900</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 16 Feb 2009 18:57:00 EST.
