Apple's agenda to be more kind to the planet isn't just about getting Friends of the Earth off its back, it's also about saving bucketloads of cash. The company published its environmental responsibility report for last year that reveals that recovering precious metals from old iPhones is worth plenty of money. The firm pulled 61,357,800 pounds of raw materials out of discarded devices, including 2,204 pounds worth of gold. Cult of Mac consulted the day's metal prices and found that the gold alone was worth $40 million. In addition, the company pulled out 3 million pounds of copper (worth $6.4 million) and 4.5 million pounds of aluminum ($3.2 million).

Apple has come under fire for its use of conflict minerals in iPhones (so have many other device manufacturers, to be fair). Today at its "Loop You In" event, the company revealed how it aims to reduce its environmental impact. It comes by way of "Liam," a robot that disassembles old iPhones into their core components. The tungsten from the device's alert module will become a cutting tool, for example, while the silver contained therein is used for solar panels -- possibly including the ones powering the company's Thailand operations.

We've seen so much stuff flowing from BoyGenius about what Vodafone is up to that we almost missed this, the Symbian roadmap for 2008. Nothing too mysterious can be gleaned from the roadmap, we just see that the previously leaked Nokia Dora and Nokia Liam are set for release in the second half of this year. Enjoy the pretty pic.

Okay, next up from Boy Genius Report's Vodafone breakdown comes the Nokia "Liam," the phone we just saw in the wild being called the E71. No word from this slide whether the E71 name is gonna stick, but Liam is pretty obviously a codename so it'll pick up an "E" number of one sort or another by the time it launches in the second quarter. Looks like all the features we'd heard so far are holding strong: HSDPA, 3.2 megapixel cam, WiFi, GPS, video call support, and pretty much all the S60 you can handle. No word from this slide whether US 3G's in the mix, but we're crossing our fingers.
