  • 2K Czech shake-up, resources shifted to US

2K Czech, home of the Mafia series, is being restructured, a fancy business term equatable to how mob movies end with a bunch of bodies and a few survivors. Eurogamer reports 2K Czech will shut down its Prague office – where Mafia 3 was rumored to be in development – with the remainder being centralized in Brno (location of the other 2K Czech studio) and "transferring some development resources" to 2K headquarters in Novato, California. "This transition will both strengthen the integration of the 2K Czech team with our award winning development teams, and better align cross-functional business practices. As part of this realignment, we are adjusting our staffing levels, resulting in the elimination of some positions," Eurogamer was told in a statement by 2K. Eurogamer also reports "10 key developers from 2K Czech are also said to have been relocated" to Novato. The obvious conclusion is it has something to do with whatever former Epic and Irrational development head Rod Fergusson is up to with his new 2K studio.

Warhorse Studios delivered a teaser trailer and name for its upcoming RPG today, now known as Kingdom Come: Deliverance. The indie Czech developer, founded in 2011 by Mafia and Mafia 2 designer Daniel Vávra, noted that the game is expected to arrive in 2015 for PC and unspecified next-gen consoles. Kingdom Come: Deliverance will take place in the "Holy Roman Empire during the late Middle Ages," in which players can engage in first-person hand-to-hand combat, sieges and large-scale battles. Unlike other games that draw inspiration from the era, Warhorse Studios promised "no magic, high fantasy or mythical overtones" in its description of the game, but will instead focus on "historically authentic characters, themes and warfare." Among those themes is the struggle for the right to sit on the throne and hold power over the kingdom, which will be central to the game's plot. The developer also recently issued a blog that described its lengthy trials in finding a suitable publisher for the open-world RPG and where it stands currently in its endeavors.

Mafia 2 and Top Spin 4 developer 2K Czech has laid off up to 40 from its Brno arm and less than 10 from its Prague branch according to a report from Develop. The cuts represent a loss of between 20-25 percent for the formerly 200-strong 2K Czech. The studio told Develop the cuts are more about slimming down than changing directions, saying it "has realigned its resources to streamline the development process, reduce costs and maximize studio performance." You always hate to hear about job cuts of any kind, and you can count on staffers from 2K Czech to have plenty of colorful ways to express their frustration.

Viktor Bocan, designer of Operation Flashpoint, and Mafia animator Zbynek Trávnivký complete the fearsome foursome.Combined, the Warhorse crew's games have sold more than 11 million copies. They are hiring now for work on this mysterious RPG, requesting people who are willing to move to Prague to work with talented, successful, laid-back developers, which we're sure will be nearly impossible to find.

If you're of the opinion that the respective, already-pretty-massive worlds of BioShock 2, Borderlands and Mafia 2 could use a little expanding, you can do so on the cheap this week. Xbox Live Marketplace has discounted select DLC for the three titles as its current Deal of the Week.

We'll probably never be able to realize our vision for a video game based on a crime syndicate that operates solely out of subaquatic tunnels. However, Amazon's offering the next best thing: BioShock 2 and Mafia 2 are marked down to $11 and $15, respectively, as the Deal of the Day promotion.

A week after being ratted out by Amazon, 2K Games has officially announced the Mafia 2 re-release. While the PC version will retain the "Director's Cut" branding, as seen on Amazon, the console re-releases will be labeled as part of the "Greatest Hits" series for PS3 and "Platinum Hits" collection for Xbox 360. All versions will include the same bonus content: the "Betrayal of Jimmy," "Jimmy's Vendetta" and "Joe's Adventures" DLC, plus the four, once-retail-exclusive style packs. The best part: These editions are available at "select retailers" right now -- and for $30 apiece -- with more retail availability to follow next month. %Gallery-120034%

Some compelling evidence that we just can't fuhgeddabout has surfaced over on Amazon, suggesting a re-release of Mafia 2 impends. As you can see in the cover art above, Mafia 2: Director's Cut for PS3, PC, and Xbox 360 includes the original game and some additional DLC: three story packs and four car and clothes packs. The story packs are most likely Joe's Adventures, Jimmy's Vendetta and The Betrayal of Jimmy, while the car and clothes packs sound like those retailer pre-order exclusives that were later offered separately. We've contacted 2K Games for comment. [Thanks, No Name]

Are any of your many, many 2K Games or Rockstar titles for Xbox 360 in need of a little expansion? Maybe you'd like to have an Undead Nightmare on the Zombie Island of Dr. Ned? Perhaps a visit to Minerva's Den to settle Jimmy's Vendetta? Itching to sing The Ballad of Gay Tony in ... um, the Underdome? These analogies are escaping us, but our bloodhound-esque nose for value is not: All the aforementioned DLC, as well as quite a few other BioShock 2, Mafia 2, Borderlands and Red Dead Redemption expansions are on sale through Xbox Live until January 31. There are also a few avatar items discounted, not to mention a few full classic games such as Sid Meier's Pirates and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. To celebrate the holidays, we're having twelve straight days of giveaways up through Christmas day. And while we say it's to celebrate, really ... we're simply getting rid of some of the larger packages around the ol' office. Here on day five, it's time to unload this gun-shaped Mafia 2 lamp. The more astute amongst you may be thinking, "Hey Joystiq ... didn't we already do this one?" Well, yes. Four months ago. But we've got another lamp and, with only 200 made, that means ol' Joystiq commanded a full 1% of the limited run. And like before, we're giving this away to one of you, along with a copy of the game on either Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3. Find the full rules after the break, then make with the commenting. Capisce?

The third DLC pack for Mafia 2, entitled "Joe's Adventures," will open up more of Empire Bay on November 23. It'll set back wannabe wiseguy types a cool $10 across the board -- $9.99 on PSN and 800 MS Points ($10) on Xbox Live and Windows PC. Now, we know what you're thinking: sorry, it's not about how Joe had a falling out with Mac, found himself frozen for centuries only to be thawed out in Empire Bay and within the employ of the mob. In fact it's about Joe Barbaro, protagonist Vito Scaletta's best friend, and follows the events of Joe's life while Vito finds himself in prison. While the former sounds amazing, if there's one thing Encino Man taught us, it's that recently thawed cavemen are too pre-occupied with wheezin' the juice to commit any crimes. %Gallery-105827%

Mafia 2's rap sheet now includes a Guinness World Record for "most swearing in a video game." The mob saga surpassed House of the Dead: Overkill's 189 permutations on the word "f*ck" by ... well, they're still counting. Seriously. A representative for Guinness World Records tells Joystiq that at the moment the company has accepted that there are over 200 f-bombs in the game. He elaborated, "The number associated with the record is liable to change in the next few weeks, as 2K have promised to supply us with a copy of the game's full script under NDA so we can count the number of f-bombs ourselves and update the record with a complete figure." The company hopes to get the record into the 2011 Gamer's Edition that will be available in January. The prolific profanities were first noticed by Achievement Hunter and compiled into a video. Take a listen to the NSFW montage after the break.

Halo: Reach took the top spot on the UK all-formats sales chart last week. According to Chart-Track, Reach's first-week sales were 20,000 units ahead of Halo 3 and 200,000 more than Halo 3: ODST. The members of Noble 6 also had the fifth biggest launch ever in the UK, with the top four belonging to Modern Warfare 2 (Xbox 360 and PS3), GTA: San Andreas (PS2) and GTA IV (Xbox 360), respectively. Likely a distant, but still impressive, debut at the number two spot is PlayStation Move's Sports Champions. The only other Move-required games in the top 40 were Start the Party! (#29) and Ubisoft's Racket Sports (#32). Rounding out the top three was Mafia 2, which held the top sales spot for the three weeks prior. Ubisoft's Prince of Persia: Forgotten Sands turned back time and went up the charts to fifth place last week, likely due to the movie's home video launch and retail promotions. Also, Ubi's Just Dance made it back into the top ten in eighth place. It gave us a good scare last week when the stalwart Wii-exclusive slipped to 11. Check out the UK top ten after the break.

Mafia 2's third major piece of downloadable content will be "Joe's Adventures," available on PS3, Xbox 360 and PC later this year. Take-Two will announce pricing and an exact date at a later time. The DLC will expand the story of Joe Barbaro in the crime epic by ... wait -- "Joe's Adventures?" Madonn' that's a clunker! You chose that over "Barbaro's Badda-bing Bash?" C'mon! Oh, you want more? How about "Barbaro Shop 2: Back in Business" ... or "The Barbaro of Empire Bay?" Heck, "Joe the Barbaro-ian" is better than "Joe's Adventures." At least spice it up a bit -- make it "JoJo's Bizarre Adventure" or something. No, wait -- that's taken. Okay, we got! "Barbaroella." Done. %Gallery-102457%
