Mobee's no stranger to the world of Mac peripherals these days, and you would've <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/mobee">already come across</a> the brand if swapping batteries is too much for you. Following its <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/11/16/mobee-magic-charger-review-wirelessly-juice-up-your-apple-magic/">Magic Charger</a> (for Apple's Magic Mouse) and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/12/mobees-magic-bar-brings-inductive-charging-to-your-apple-blueto/">Magic Bar</a> (for Apple's wireless keyboard and Magic Trackpad), at <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/CES+2012">this year's CES</a> the company's decided to dish out an all-on-one charging station that features a second inductive charging pad plus four USB ports. But of course, there's a trade-off for this big daddy: in addition to the USB connection to your Mac, the Magic Feet also requires an AC adapter. However, given that each device has a battery life of up to 10 days only, this external power will actually come in handy for night time charging.<br />
<br />
Alternatively, if you're not a fan of clogging up desk space with a charging station, then you can consider Mobee's Power Bar. Unlike its inductive-charging counterpart, this stick simply adds a 10-day battery and a micro-USB port to the Magic Trackpad, thus letting you plug-and-charge when needed. Oddly enough, Mobee doesn't say whether the Power Bar is also compatible with Apple's wireless keyboard, but the response we received was that it isn't a matter of technical limitation; but rather, it's simply that the company believes the Magic Bar is the better solution for owners of the wireless keyboard. Well, we'll let you be the judge.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/08/mobee-magic-feet-and-power-bar-inductive-charging/">Mobee's Magic Feet and Power Bar juice up Mac peripherals, no more battery swapping for you</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Sun, 08 Jan 2012 13:22:00 EST. Could the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/magicmouse">Magic Mouse</a> be replaced by an even more "magical" input device? It might, if a just-published Apple patent application ever results in an actual product. Described simply as a "computer input device including a display device," the application clearly details a mouse that would have both a touch-sensitive surface and a built-in display. That, the application suggestions, could open up a whole range of new input possibilities, including using the mouse as numeric keypad, a phone, a personal digital assistant, or a graphics pad, to name just a few. What's more, the nature of the collimated glass used for the mouse would also apparently allow it to display a magnified image of anything underneath, and the images displayed would seemingly appear to be directly on the surface on the mouse, and not appear to be under the glass (we're not talking about a regular capacitive touchscreen on a mouse here). Of course, all of this is still just a patent application, and Apple has a long, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/apple,patentapplication">long</a> string of those that have yet to result in anything -- still, something about this one strikes us a bit more likely than, say, a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/04/apple-contemplates-head-mounted-iphone-display-america-cringes/">head-mounted iPhone display</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/21/apple-patent-application-details-magical-mouse-with-a-built-in-d/">Apple patent application details magical mouse with a built-in display</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 21 Jan 2011 17:12:00 EST. How's about a flattened version, sans Bluetooth? That's exactly what we're being presented with here, as Sanwa's MA-TOUCH1 looks like the lovechild of Apple's own multitouch critter and Logitech's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/08/04/logitechs-usb-unifying-receiver-one-dongle-to-serve-multiple-i/">M505</a>. In truth, the only real design cue this guy snags from the Logi is its Unifying Receiver, signifying that it relies on wireless USB rather than BT. The design scheme is definitely of interest -- rather than being curved to fit the shape of a relaxed palm, it's totally flat up top, supporting four-direction scrolling and two-finger swipes. She's on sale now in four different colors (red, white, black and silver), with &yen;4,300 ($52) standing between you and something you may or may not ever actually use to control your cursor.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/12/28/sanwa-trots-out-a-multitouch-mouse-of-its-own-the-ma-touch1/">Sanwa trots out a multitouch mouse of its own, the MA-TOUCH1</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 28 Dec 2010 19:31:00 EST. Aww, look at that cute little mouse cuddling up in its nest. Wait a tick... an <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/inductive+charging">inductive</a> charging mat for the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/magic+mouse">Magic Mouse</a>? You won't currently find the Magic Charger at the Apple Store (something that could change soon) but the good folks at Mobee are finally taking orders for this intriguing product on its website. To mark this occasion, the Swiss company sent us a review unit for some sweet wireless charging action. Read on for our full review after the break.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/mobee-magic-charger-review/">Mobee Magic Charger review: wirelessly juice up your Apple Magic Mouse</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/mobee-magic-charger-review/#3574078"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/11/magicchargerrev2010-11-15-0_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/mobee-magic-charger-review/#3574079"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/11/magicchargerrev2010-11-15-1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/mobee-magic-charger-review/#3574080"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/11/magicchargerrev2010-11-15-2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/mobee-magic-charger-review/#3574081"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/11/magicchargerrev2010-11-15-3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/mobee-magic-charger-review/#3574082"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/11/magicchargerrev2010-11-15-4_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/11/16/mobee-magic-charger-review-wirelessly-juice-up-your-apple-magic/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Mobee Magic Charger review: wirelessly juice up your Apple Magic Mouse</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/11/16/mobee-magic-charger-review-wirelessly-juice-up-your-apple-magic/">Mobee Magic Charger review: wirelessly juice up your Apple Magic Mouse</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 16 Nov 2010 21:18:00 EST. Honestly, while Apple's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/MagicMouse/">Magic Mouse</a> is a bit of a pioneer in its application of a multitouch surface on a "regular" tracking mouse, it's not exactly easy or comfortable to perform multitouch gestures with it. Plus there's the little problem of no official driver for Windows. Speedlink's Cue mouse looks to be solving at least one of those problems, maybe even both. The wireless 1000 dpi optical mouse is naturally PC-compatible, with software to allow you to configure your own gestures, and it has a somewhat flatter and more extensive touch surface than the Magic Mouse, which might make gestures a bit more doable. Basically, it's somewhere in between the Magic Mouse and the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/MagicTrackpad/">Magic Trackpad</a>, minus the hyperbole, and plus clear demarcation of right and left click. It'll retail for &euro;40 when it ships in November (about $56 USD).<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/10/22/speedlink-cue-does-the-multitouch-hybrid-mouse-thing/">Speedlink Cue does the multitouch hybrid mouse thing</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 22 Oct 2010 15:07:00 EST. Do you dream at night? Do you stare at your ceiling pondering questions that no other Earthling could possibly ponder? Contrary to popular belief, you aren't actually alone in this nightmare, and we too have wondered what would happen to our universe if a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/10/20/apples-magic-mouse-multitouch-gestures-bluetooth-four-month/">Magic Mouse</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/iPhone/">iPhone</a> collided. Look up. Now down. Now back up again. That greenish, devilish device you see above is the iPhonc, a "<a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/KIRF/">KIRF</a> of all KIRFs," if you will. It's hard to pinpoint who exactly thought to shove a dumbphone into the body of a Magic Mouse, but in some strange way, they've managed to make our souls smile. Best of all? Even the source here admits that it's meaningless to wonder over the specifications and price, noting that the shell alone should attract sufficient attention. If you look deep enough into the halls of IFA, if you can see through the 3D television murk and tablet hype, you might be lucky enough to find a few gems. Like the Mobee Magic Charger for Apple's Magic Mouse making its worldwide debut today. So, what's the "magic?" Well, if you own a wireless Apple Magic Mouse then your biggest complaint is without a doubt battery life. That means you're either purchasing (and tossing) alkaline after alkaline or you're constantly swapping in a fresh pair of rechargeables to keep the juice flowing. The Mobee Magic Charger does away with that nonsense with its inductive charging mini-USB base station and battery pack that slots into Apple's mouse -- no special sleeve or bulky appendage required unlike many after-market inductive charging solutions. Oh, and the 1.30oz / 37g battery pack -- developed in-house by Switzerland-based Mobee -- is actually lighter than a pair of AAs thereby reducing the overall weight of the mouse. <br />
<br />
Regarding specs, we're told that a Mobee charged Magic Mouse will last for 6 days under constant use. After that, it requires 6 hours to reach a full charge. Otherwise, the idea here is to park the mouse on its dock when not in use. While the company has considered an inductive charging mouse pad, they opted against it so that people can mouse on the surface of their choice and to keep the whole package portable and inconspicuous. The Magic Charger itself matches the materials, look, and feel of Apple's Magic Mouse perfectly. Oh, and the blue charging light you see above will be green once the product ships worldwide in mid-October for &euro;49.90 (with tax) / $49.90 (before tax). At that price, it offers a 6-8 month break-even for the typical Magic Mouse user relying on disposable batteries. Honestly, the Mobee Magic Charger is an idea so good that it makes you wonder, <em>why didn't Apple think of that?</em><br />
<br />
Expect to see a "few more" Mobee products launch for Apple products before the end of the year and into 2011. While Mobee wouldn't tell us exactly what products are coming, it did admit to looking at Apple's new Track Pad, the iPhone 4 (we expect to see a case), and wireless keyboard. We look forward to it.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/mobees-inductive-magic-charger-for-apples-magic-mouse-really-is-magical/">Mobee's inductive Magic Charger for Apple's Magic Mouse really is magical</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/mobees-inductive-magic-charger-for-apples-magic-mouse-really-is-magical/#3328169"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/09/mobee-magic-charger-dsc4427-engadget_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/mobees-inductive-magic-charger-for-apples-magic-mouse-really-is-magical/#3328170"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/09/mobee-magic-charger-dsc4422-engadget_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/mobees-inductive-magic-charger-for-apples-magic-mouse-really-is-magical/#3328171"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/09/mobee-magic-charger-dsc4420-engadget_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/mobees-inductive-magic-charger-for-apples-magic-mouse-really-is-magical/#3328172"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/09/mobee-magic-charger-dsc4417-engadget_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/mobees-inductive-magic-charger-for-apples-magic-mouse-really-is-magical/#3328173"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/09/mobee-magic-charger-dsc4416-engadget_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/mobee-magic-charger-packaging-press-pics/">Mobee Magic Charger packaging press pics</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/mobee-magic-charger-packaging-press-pics/#3328290"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/09/mobee-magic-charger-front_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/mobee-magic-charger-packaging-press-pics/#3328291"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/09/mobee-magic-charger--back_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/mobee-magic-charger-packaging-press-pics/#3328292"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/09/mobee-magic-charger--opened_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/03/mobees-inductive-magic-charger-for-apples-magic-mouse-really-i/">Mobee's inductive Magic Charger for Apple's Magic Mouse really is magical</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 03 Sep 2010 05:19:00 EST. <em><strong>For over thirty years the computer mouse ruled over the kingdom of computer navigation. Despite losing its rubber ball and cord over the years, the </strong></em><em><strong>peripheral</strong></em><em><strong> lived a long, full life of being pushed across desks and tables </strong></em><em><strong>getting the cursor where it needed to go</strong></em><em><strong>. It died today from neglect as it was abandoned en masse for touchpads and touch-based computers. </strong></em><br />
<br />
Many tech pundits have already started drafting an obituary of the computer mouse like the one above, but let's be clear: we think the death of the mouse is greatly exaggerated. In fact, we're so convinced the mouse isn't dead that we've been testing some of the best on the market for the last couple of months. Click on below to find out why we think the lowly mouse has more than a few good years left, and which ones out there deserve your attention.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/25/the-mouse-aint-dead-yet-five-of-the-best-mice-reviewed/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The mouse ain't dead...yet: five of the best mice reviewed</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/25/the-mouse-aint-dead-yet-five-of-the-best-mice-reviewed/">The mouse ain't dead...yet: five of the best mice reviewed</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 25 May 2010 14:44:00 EST. The pun is so obvious it practically insults your intelligence, but we just can't help ourselves -- the iPad has just gotten a little more <em>magical</em>. Using the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/04/iphone-and-magic-mouse-linked-up-by-btstack-video/">BTstack</a> application that brought Bluetooth mouse support to iPhone, enterprising individuals discovered the same technique works on a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/02/iphone-ipad-spirit-jailbreak-released-to-the-world/">jailbroken iPad</a> as well, and hooked up Apple's own Magic Mouse to show it off to the world. Mind you, while this implementation does look quite useful, we do detect the barest hint of lag -- so it may not be your weapon of choice for pixel-doubled <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/08/11/apples-iphone-yes-it-plays-doom/">Doom</a> sessions. Apple haters, cherish the moment while you can. The Magic Mouse's odd ergonomics aren't exactly everyone's cup of tea -- including some of us at Engadget -- so we were more than a bit stoked when our <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/13/make-your-magic-mouse-oh-so-ergonomic-with-this-pasty-silicone-g/">silicone lump from MMFixed</a> arrived in post today. Installation was straight-forward and mess-free thanks to the small suction pad underneath, and despite the fairly strong attachment, we were able to easily slide or rotate the soft cushion on the mouse for adjustments. We've had no problems with multitouch input thus far, and the old wristache-after-prolonged-usage seems to now be a thing of the past. So yeah -- it's safe to say that this squidgy fix was well worth the $10 investment (although it has gone up to $12 now, which is hardly the end of the world). You could say that it's rather silly to fix something that's supposedly magical, but we suppose even the best tricks could stand to be improved.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/magic-mouse-fix-hands-on-literally-0/">MMFixed's Magic Mouse fix hands-on, literally</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/magic-mouse-fix-hands-on-literally-0/#2889283"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/04/mmfixed2010-04-13-1271156323_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/magic-mouse-fix-hands-on-literally-0/#2889272"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/04/mmfixed2010-04-13-1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/magic-mouse-fix-hands-on-literally-0/#2889273"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/04/mmfixed2010-04-13-2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/magic-mouse-fix-hands-on-literally-0/#2889274"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/04/mmfixed2010-04-13-3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/magic-mouse-fix-hands-on-literally-0/#2889275"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/04/mmfixed2010-04-13-4_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/13/mmfixeds-magic-mouse-fix-hands-on-literally/">MMFixed's Magic Mouse fix hands-on, literally</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 13 Apr 2010 11:16:00 EST. While it's hard to say if Apple's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/magic+mouse">Magic Mouse</a> really needs "fixing" -- it depends somewhat on your grip -- it's not a huge stretch to say that the slender multitouch device doesn't quite fit in the <em>palm</em> of one's hand. Sensing a market opportunity, Will of MMFixed.com recently decided to come to our collective rescue. For $10, he offers a simple silicone block that matches the mouse's contoured surface nicely, with an integrated suction cup that keeps it securely fastened. While it's not quite a one-size-fits-all solution, it's certainly a lot cheaper than buying one of the new <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/10/jelfin-ball-shaped-mouse-hands-on/">whacky</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/07/mad-catz-cyborg-rat-hands-on-true-customizable-mouse-madness/">adjustable mice</a> we've seen recently; and if the idea of ergonomics via marshmallow doesn't appeal to you, you can always try the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/12/09/white-bread-wrist-rest-is-non-organic-yet-ergonomic/">white bread</a> variety. Even though you probably still can't figure out what good the ability to connect your <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/12/24/want-to-connect-your-iphone-and-bluetooth-keyboard-theres-a-j/">Bluetooth keyboard to your iPhone</a> will do, the BTstack project is steaming ahead with this demo of a connected <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/10/29/apples-magic-mouse-now-shipping-seeks-mighty-revenge/">Magic Mouse</a> twirling its pointer all over Apple's handset. The driver code is still unreleased, but we get to see some nice lag-free interaction between the two devices, suggesting it shouldn't be too far away from public consumption. As if to answer your earlier quandary, the video also features a Celluon CL800BT virtual keyboard, which projects onto and responds to your touch of any flat surface. A gimmick most likely, but a fun journey into the dream of nomadic computing nonetheless. Check out all the action after the break. <br />

Hey Windows users: what would you risk for a mouse of such mystical persuasions that it has the word "magic" right in the product name? How about $69 for the mouse followed by a few sleepless nights after installing a .exe found in the murky shallows of the internet? That's what it'll take to install some hacked drivers, said to enable Apple's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/magic%20mouse">Magic Mouse</a> gestures, on your Windows rig. The drivers were extracted from the latest Bluetooth update targeting Mac owners running Windows under Boot Camp, but now there's nothing stopping you from trying them too. Let us know how this dark elixir works out in the comments below.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/11/21/windows-drivers-for-apples-magic-mouse-conjured-from-the-ether/">Windows drivers for Apple's Magic Mouse conjured from the ether</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Sat, 21 Nov 2009 16:53:00 EST. Apple's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2006/07/31/apples-bluetooth-mighty-mouse-reviewed/">Mighty Mouse</a> was one of the most loved <em>and loathed</em> rodents of all time. When it worked, it was a magnificent productivity booster for Mac users. Unfortunately, over time, even after hours and hours of vigorous rubbing, the top-mounted trackball would become so ensnared in hand-jam that owners were left with two options: delicately splay the mouse for a bit of X-acto home surgery... or smash it with a vengeance hammer until justice was served. So maybe now you can understand all the hopeful fuss made over its successor: the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/10/20/apples-magic-mouse-multitouch-gestures-bluetooth-four-month/">Magic Mouse</a>. It's now shipping to those of you who ordered it separately from its iMac bundle. Snow Leopard (and Leopard) users can even download the software update now so that all those multi-touch and gestural features will be enabled once the bluetooth mouse arrives. Then we'll see if this is the mouse that rights all those wrongs.<br /><br /><strong>Update</strong>: Added 10.5.8 Leopard download link.<br /><a href="http://support.apple.com/kb/DL950"> <br /> Read</a> -- Wireless Mouse Software Update 1.0 (Snow Leopard)<br /><a href="http://support.apple.com/kb/DL951">Read</a> -- Wireless Mouse Software Update 1.0 (Leopard)<br /> <a href="http://www.macrumors.com/2009/10/28/apples-multi-touch-magic-mouse-now-shipping/">Read</a> -- Magic Mouse now shipping<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/10/29/apples-magic-mouse-now-shipping-seeks-mighty-revenge/">Apple's Magic Mouse now shipping: seeks mighty revenge</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 29 Oct 2009 05:34:00 EST. Were you expecting unicorn tears or something? <em>iFixit </em>keeps working to finish its list of <a href="http://www.engadgetmobile.com/tag/teardown/">teardown</a> to-dos, this time with Apple's new <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/MagicMouse/">Magic Mouse</a>. It probably comes as no surprise, but just under the top surfaces lies a considerable number of capacitive sensors, and other than that, there really isn't a lot to gaze upon. Then again, if you tend to fancy the ins and outs if gears and gizmos, this should be right up your alley.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/peripherals/" rel="tag">Peripherals</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/10/22/magic-mouse-post-teardown-loses-some-of-its-dark-arts-charm/">Magic Mouse post-teardown loses some of its dark arts charm</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 22 Oct 2009 00:43:00 EST. They're in the house! The brand new ultra-wide all-aluminum <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/10/20/imac-line-updated-with-16-9-displays-quad-core-core-i5-model/">iMac</a> has been unboxed inside the hallowed halls of the <em>Engadget</em> HQ, and inside was a real scarcity of wires, a keyboard (which now requires one less battery but otherwise looks exactly the same), and of course that brand new multitouch <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/10/20/apples-magic-mouse-multitouch-gestures-bluetooth-four-month/">Magic Mouse</a>. It feels much thinner than its predecessor, and the whole front of the unit provides a satisfying, unified click. The runners on the bottom make the mouse seem almost more appropriate for sledding than mousing, but it glides around just fine on a solid surface. Pics galore in the gallery below.<br />
<br />
When we flicked the mouse on it was easy enough to spot it over Bluetooth on our regular Mac, but it only worked with tracking and single click -- none of this capacitive nonsense without a software update, naturally. On the iMac's first boot it was able to pick up the mouse and keyboard without a problem, even letting us use the capacitive scrolling to work through the setup wizard. We quickly spotted our first usability problem: coming from a trackpad heavy workflow, our fingers were expecting a capacitive tap-to-click action, instead of having to physically click the mouse. It's not a huge problem, but there's no 1:1 usability model between an Apple trackpad and this mouse. Scrolling is single finger, with a two finger left or right swipe doing back / forward in a browser or the finder. Right clicking requires a lifting of the left click finger, just like the Mighty Mouse, though all-in-all it feels much less frustrating to use than the Mighty Mouse, which almost seems to rage against the click at times. Like we said before: no pinch to zoom, but given the shape and texture of the surface, we're not sure we could pull it off even if the software allowed for it. <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/new-imac-and-magic-mouse-unboxing-and-quick-hands-on/">New iMac and Magic Mouse unboxing and quick hands-on</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/new-imac-and-magic-mouse-unboxing-and-quick-hands-on/#2378366"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/10/imac-unbox-00_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/new-imac-and-magic-mouse-unboxing-and-quick-hands-on/#2378365"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/10/imac-unbox-01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/new-imac-and-magic-mouse-unboxing-and-quick-hands-on/#2378364"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/10/imac-unbox-02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/new-imac-and-magic-mouse-unboxing-and-quick-hands-on/#2378363"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/10/imac-unbox-03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/new-imac-and-magic-mouse-unboxing-and-quick-hands-on/#2378362"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/10/imac-unbox-04_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/desktops/" rel="tag">Desktops</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/peripherals/" rel="tag">Peripherals</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/10/20/new-imac-and-magic-mouse-unboxing-and-quick-hands-on/">New iMac and Magic Mouse unboxing and quick hands-on</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 20 Oct 2009 12:57:00 EST. Ready for some more <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Apple/">Apple</a> news? Good. Say goodbye to the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2005/08/02/mighty-mouse-review-roundup/1">Mighty Mouse</a> (for reasons beyond those <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/10/07/mighty-mouse-trademark-awarded-to-man-and-machine-mister-trouble/">legal entanglements</a>) -- the Magic Mouse has arrived. Hate buttons or moving parts? So does Apple, and nothing exemplifies the company's march towards a buttonless future more than this "two button" laser mouse, which has one button and no scroll wheel -- just a multitouch surface (a hard acrylic) across the top. With the Magic Mouse you're able to do familiar gestures from the Mac trackpad playbook such as two-finger swipes, but you can also do single-finger horizontal and vertical scrolling, complete with a software-based inertia (see a video <a href="http://apple.com/magicmouse" target="_blank">here</a>). Sorry kids, no pinch zoom. The wireless device boasts a four-month battery life, and will be available <em>today </em>for $69. Full press release is after the break.<br />

And here we go: the Apple Store is down, presumably to update it with all the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/10/19/apple-to-introduce-host-of-new-machines-new-multitouch-input-de/">new gear we're expecting</a> today. New iMacs, plastic MacBooks, multitouch input peripherals, maybe a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/10/19/apple-3x3-access-point-hits-the-fcc-with-5-8ghz-bands/">new Airport Express</a> -- we could get everything, we could get nothing. You'll know as soon as we do.<br /><br /><strong>Update:</strong> Kasper from <em>AppleInsider</em> just hit us up with some <a href="http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/09/10/20/sources_reveal_part_of_apples_new_mac_product_lineup.html">last-minute leaked part numbers</a>, which reveal a new iMac with a 21.5-inch display, some new mini configs including a server with two hard drives and no optical drive, new AirPort gear, and yes, a new 60W MacBook power supply. See? Dreams do come true. Oh, and that's apparently just part of the list, so we'll see what else happens when all this stuff actually hits.<br /><br />MC207LL/A - K84 BEST BTR- USA<br /> MC238LL/A - MAC MINI 2.26/2x1GB/160/SD/AP/BT-USA<br /> MC239LL/A- MAC MINI 2.53/2x2GB/320GB/SD/AP/BT-USA<br /> MC340LL/A - AIRPORT EXTREME (SIM DUALBAND) - USA<br /> MC343LL/A - TIME CAPSULE 1TB (SIM DUALBAND) -USA<br /> MC344LL/A - TIME CAPSULE 2TB (SIM DUALBAND) - USA<br /> MC408LL/A - MAC MINI 2.53/2x2GB/1TB/NO ODD/AP-BT-USA<br /> MC413LL/A - IMAC 21.5"/3.06/2x2GB/1TB/4670-256MB-USA<br /> MC434LL/A - APPLE VESA MOUNT ADAPTER <br /> MC461LL/A - MACBOOK 60W MAGSAFE POWER ADAPTER - USA<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/desktops/" rel="tag">Desktops</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/laptops/" rel="tag">Laptops</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/peripherals/" rel="tag">Peripherals</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/software/" rel="tag">Software</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/10/20/apple-store-down-for-updates/">Apple Store down for updates, new iMac and more on the way? We're not sure why John Gruber and Dan Lyons are having some sort of megalomaniacal Apple super-pundit standoff, but we'll sit here and take the spoils: Gruber's just one-upped Lyons's <a href="http://www.fakesteve.net/2009/10/were-going-to-have-news-tomorrow.html">earlier vague tease</a> of new Apple gear tomorrow with a pretty specific list of things he's apparently heard we'll see, including new iMacs and plastic MacBooks, revved Mac Minis (including one that runs OS X Server), a new multitouch "Magic Mouse" (<a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/10/07/mighty-mouse-trademark-awarded-to-man-and-machine-mister-trouble/">ha!</a>) and some sort of multitouch desktop trackpad accessory. That pretty much covers <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/imac,rumor">every rumor</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/macmini,rumor">vague</a> <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/macbook,rumor">whisper</a> we've heard over the past few months, so it's actually a fairly conservative set of predictions, outside of that trackpad -- which itself may or may not be related to this <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/10/02/apple-seeks-to-take-multitouch-where-its-never-been-before-in-n/">multitouch input device patent</a> from a couple weeks ago. We'll see what happens tomorrow morning -- at this point we're half expecting a tablet, a pony, and some sort of multitouch waffle maker as well.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/desktops/" rel="tag">Desktops</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/laptops/" rel="tag">Laptops</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/peripherals/" rel="tag">Peripherals</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/10/19/apple-to-introduce-host-of-new-machines-new-multitouch-input-de/">Apple to introduce host of new machines, new multitouch input devices tomorrow?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 19 Oct 2009 20:51:00 EST. No doubt we've seen some snazzy takes on <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/mouse">mousing</a> instruments, but when Popular Science dubs your twist on the critter we couldn't do without an Invention of the Year, you've accomplished something. A team of WPI undergraduate students were able to win such an honor by crafting the MagicMouse, a "three-dimensional computer mouse" that allows users to "control and manipulate items on a computer screen just by pointing at the monitor." While we've seen similar ideas for <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2006/12/17/good-bytes-cafe-gives-internet-computer-access-to-the-disabled/">helping disabled</a> individuals interface with a computer, this wee iteration actually fits around one's finger and "uses an array of receivers to track the motion of a tiny ultrasonic transmitter." The cursor is moved by waving one's hand back and forth, while moving closer and backing away enables <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2006/11/15/buffalos-wiimote-knockoff-the-bomu-w24a-bl-spatial-mouse/">zooming</a> functions to be utilized, which should make handling those CAD drawings a good bit easier. Perhaps most notable, however, is the relatively low cost of assembly, as the entire contraption (rechargeable Li-ion and all) cost just $155, and we're sure you know how far that could fall if a bulk buying manufacturer brought it to commercialization. A few more pictures after the jump.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.popsci.com/popsci/technology/bd472ee32fb82110vgnvcm1000004eecbccdrcrd.html">Popular Science</a> and <a href="http://www.gizmag.com/go/7293/">Gizmag</a>]<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/05/21/wpi-students-create-wireless-3d-ring-mouse/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>WPI students create wireless 3D ring mouse</em></a></p><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/peripherals/" rel="tag">Peripherals</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/05/21/wpi-students-create-wireless-3d-ring-mouse/">WPI students create wireless 3D ring mouse</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 21 May 2007 23:37:00 EST.
