Daily iPad App: Marvel vs. Capcom 2 is gonna take you for a ride
After quite a while, Capcom has finally released Marvel vs. Capcom 2 in the App Store, and you probably know right away if you want it or not. This Dreamcast-era fighting game might be a little silly and colorful, but it offers up some insane, excessive action that other fighting games have yet to match. Those on full consoles are already playing version 3, of course, but version 2 is a masterpiece of 2D animation, with all of Capcom's and Marvel's heroes decked out with great graphics and animations. Unfortunately, the game suffers from the same issues that most fighting games on the iPad and iPhone do: The virtual controls aren't the best for this type of gameplay. Capcom's dealt with it as best they can with something called the "flick button," but still, for games like this, nothing's going to substitute for a real joystick and buttons. The app description doesn't mention iCade support, but that would be nice. The title does have local multiplayer over Bluetooth, however, so you and a friend can face off locally, and all 56 characters are here and playable out of the game. If you have a new iPad, the graphics aren't yet compatible with the new Retina Display, but that's not too big a bother, and an update might fix that anyway. For its launch sale price of $2.99 (until May 6), Marvel vs. Capcom 2 is definitely a great title for those who love fighting games. It's so Pringles!
Marvel vs. Capcom 2 HD video compares upscaling methods
We've already had a peek at the various sprite filtering modes that can be optionally employed on Capcom's Marvel vs. Capcom 2 port for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, but as usual, one truly need to get a look at the game in motion to judge. Check out Joystiq's YouTube HD footage (embedded after the break) and see if that type of thing has any noticeable effect on the action.

Making us a little more comfortable with the slow death of S-Video is the news that the Sega Dreamcast version of Marvel vs. Capcom 2 is coming to the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. With its introduction to the HD console era, Capcom's had to make some changes to the classic, although it isn't getting a full frame by frame rework like Super Street Fighter II HD Remix, producer Rey Jimenez blogged about some of the updates, including the three options for sprite filtering seen above to keep things sharp in 1080p. Also new for 2009 is widescreen support (the stages are still the same size) with notes from two prominent player promising "the same game, only prettier." The only real question now is which game is next?
EVO2K7 Championship Series line-up revealed
As the definitive fighting game tournament (for the Western world that is), the EVO2K series is always one of the years hottest events. This year will be no exception as the final line-up of games has been decided.Returning for yet another headlining act will be Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike. It will be joined by Marvel VS Capcom 2, Guilty Gear XX Slash, Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection, Capcom vs SNK 2 and the immortal Super Street Fighter II Turbo. New to this years competition are Virtua Fighter 5 and Nintendo's Super Smash Bros. Melee. The latter of the two isn't all that surprising as Mario Kart DS was thrown into the fray last year for both fun and profit. Virtua Fighter 5 on the other hand will be interesting. The last time Sega's flagship fighter graced the stage of EVO was in 2004 and the turnout weren't favorable to say the least. While a new game could help strengthen the community, we'll have to wait and see if it can generate better results.If you're interested in throwing down with some of the best in the world, check EVO's website for information regarding qualifiers in your area. If not, you can always qualify at the main event itself in Las Vegas.
