We haven't heard much from outspoken former Acer CEO Gianfranco Lanci since he left the company back in March of this year, but it looks like he's now ready to get back into the PC business in a slightly different role. Lenovo confirmed today that Lanci is joining the company as a consultant to "help develop and accelerate Lenovo's worldwide consumer business." Initially, those efforts will be mostly focused on Lenovo's integration of German PC manufacturer Medion, which it acquired in June for $907 million, but it sounds like this is more than just a short-term gig -- he does get to stay in Italy, though. Head on past the break for Lenovo's complete statement.

Continue reading Ex-Acer CEO Gianfranco Lanci joins Lenovo as a consultant

Ex-Acer CEO Gianfranco Lanci joins Lenovo as a consultant originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 16 Sep 2011 20:33:00 EST. Medion enjoyed a pretty eventful weekend at this year's IFA in Berlin, where the German PC maker unveiled a new Android tablet and a rather obtuse Gingerbread smartphone. Known as the Lifetab P9514, the company's 32GB, 1.6-pound slate is powered by a 1GHz NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor, runs Honeycomb 3.2 and features a capacitive multitouch display with 1280 x 800 resolution. The device also supports both quad-band 3G and WiFi connections, along with the usual smattering of HDMI, microUSB, and microSD ports. Medion's new phone, meanwhile, remains decidedly more mysterious. At this point, we know that the 4.3-inch handset rocks a five megapixel shooter and comes pre-loaded with the manufacturer's GoPal satnav app, but further details remain murky. Both devices are expected to ship within Europe during Q4 of this year at unconfirmed prices, though rumor has it that the LifeTab will run for €399 (about $564). No word yet on whether we can expect to see either product hit the US anytime soon, but you can catch a glimpse of the freshly unveiled smartphone, after the break.

It looks like you can expect to see a lot more of Lenovo in Deutschland. The company is buying German consumer electronics maker Medion -- a deal worth up to €629.4 million ($907 million), according to The Wall Street Journal. That makes it the company's biggest acquisition since it bought IBM's PC business back in 2004. Lenovo's end game: to boost its market share in Germany, which happens to be Europe's largest PC market. All told, it hopes to own 14 percent of the PC category there -- roughly double what it commands now -- and expects its share of the Western European computer market to hit 7.5 percent. Lenovo's announcement comes at a time when it seems to have some strong upward momentum -- just last week, the company reported that its fourth-quarter profit more than tripled year over year (much to Wall Street's surprise) and that it generated $21 billion in revenue thanks to growth in every product line and every region where it does business. PR chock full 'o numbers after the break.
Continue reading Lenovo buying Medion for up to $907 million, expects to double its German PC market share

Lenovo buying Medion for up to $907 million, expects to double its German PC market share originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 01 Jun 2011 20:39:00 EST. You might have hoped that NVIDIA's introduction of the 400M series of mobile GPUs would bring about a slew of hot new laptops to drop into our gaming boudoirs, but we are in fact left facing more of the same. Externally, anyhow. The chipmaker rolled out the green carpet for a set of upcoming machines in London today, but they were refreshes, rather than overhauls, of current hardware. The big news is to be found within, as the new GTX 460M has made a home inside the updated ASUS G53, Toshiba Qosmio X505, and MSI GT663. The common thread among these three is that they're all big and hefty, and all emit a subtle vroom sound every time you touch them. What we learned from NVIDIA today is that the GTX 480M will remain an exotic (you might even call it quixotic) GPU reserved for large-screen gaming stations, the GTX 470M will similarly be an enthusiast part, and the GTX 460M will be the company's big play for the mainstream performance market. It also became clear that even the third GPU in the company's mobile hierarchy will need quite a bulky cooling setup (and a proportionately huge charger) to do its job, but NVIDIA's promises of much-improved performance might just make it worthwhile.

As to the more sane among us, there was a selection of pleasingly thinner machines, like the ASUS N53 and Acer Aspire 5745, which make do with the lower-specced GT 420M and GT 425M graphics chips. Those are expected to be NVIDIA's biggest sellers, and the video demo after the break of the 425M churning through StarCraft II is certainly appealing. We should note, however, that the latest (though definitely not greatest) Prince of Persia game was also on tap on one of these machines and its frame rate gave us a delightful old-timey feeling any time we entered combat with its emulation of stop-motion animation. So, as ever, it's looking like great graphics will require great rigs, but we can probably expect a decent -- not game-changing (get it?) -- leap in performance among the lighter options as well.

Gallery: NVIDIA trots out GeForce 400M series laptops

Continue reading NVIDIA trots out GeForce 400M series laptops, shows off StarCraft II gameplay (video)

NVIDIA trots out GeForce 400M series laptops, shows off StarCraft II gameplay (video) originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 10 Sep 2010 16:14:00 EST. Finally a product that integrates an MP3 player with a Flip-style digital video camera! Of course, we're talking about Medion's S47000 Digital HD Sports Camera, which counts among its many charms: h.264 video recording, 2x digital zoom, a whopping 1MP still camera, HDMI out, and 90MB storage (though there is an SD card slot, for what it's worth). Tempted? Didn't think so. As for us, we're not shelling out £100 ($165) on anything without a pedometer.
Medion has never really been our go-to manufacturer for new hotness, but we're really digging this new X9613 all-in-one model it's showing off. Even better than the sexy, the computer is fronting a 24-inch multitouch display, a miniature SideShow screen, a gloriously large physical volume knob, and a bunch of convenient media controls along the bottom. Internals aren't bad either, with a Core 2 Quad Q9000 processor and GeForce GT240M graphics. The price range, unfortunately, is rather steep at 1,499 to 1,900 Euro (about $2,142 to $2,714 US). Lucky for us, US prices are usually quite a bit lower than straight-up conversion, though there's no promised roll-out just yet to bank on. Video hands-on is after the break.

Continue reading Medion's 24-inch X9613 multitouch all-in-one PC actually looks pretty hot

Medion's 24-inch X9613 multitouch all-in-one PC actually looks pretty hot originally appeared on Engadget on Sat, 29 Aug 2009 17:50:00 EST.
The AMD-based netbook train may have been a little slow to get out of the station, but it looks like it's finally starting to pick up a bit of steam, with Medion the latest to roll out an offering of its own. That comes in the form of the company's new Akoya Mini E1312, which opts for a low-power AMD Sempron 210U processor and ATI Radeon Xpress 1250 graphics instead of the usual Intel combo. Otherwise, you can expect to get a 16:9 11.6-inch display, 1GB of RAM, a 160GB hard drive, HDMI out, and a six-cell or nine-cell battery. No word on a release 'round here just yet, but folks in the UK will apparently be able to pick this one up exclusively at Aldi stores starting July 12th for £339.99 (or just under $550).

There are little HTPCs that hum indiscreetly amidst your home theater equipment, and then are there behemoth multimedia PCs that gobble down all the HD content you can shove at them while playing Crysis at 80fps and folding proteins in the background. Medion's Akoya P7700 D looks to fall somewhere in between, featuring a strong Intel Core 2 Quad processor, a middling NVIDIA GeForce GT 230 with HDMI output, 1TB of storage to start, and a Blu-ray drive all in a case that has pleasant enough looks but won't be squeezing into many entertainment centers. The system hits Europe this week for a reasonable €699 (about $970), and if you get lucky could be appearing in local Aldi circulars soon.

[Via Pocket-lint]

Medion's Akoya P7700 D PC will do your multimedia right on a budget originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 28 May 2009 08:06:00 EST.
If you're a resident of the European Union (or just a big fan) you might like to know that Medion's back with another nondescript, low-priced laptop or two. Understated sequels to the Mini E1210, both the E1211 and E1215 sport a 10-inch display, Intel Atom processor, 160GB hard drive, Windows XP Home, webcam, Bluetooth, and WiFi, and weigh a mere 1.25 kilograms -- and the latter also rocks integrated UMTS. According to Portable Gear, these guys are expected to fall into the €400-500 price range, rearing their heads in retail outlets such as Aldi, Hema, Action, Gamma and Karwei. This one is aimed squarely at those looking for a media center in laptop form, with it boasting a 1,680 x 945, 18.4-inch display, a 2GHz Core 2 Duo T5800 processor, 4GB of RAM, a 320GB hard drive, a 512MB GeForce 9600M GS graphics card that can operate on its own or in hybrid mode, a Blu-ray drive, and a 5.1 Dolby audio system, among other media-friendly features. This being Medion, it also won't completely break the bank, with it setting you back a fairly reasonable £800, or just over $1,100.

Medion has been cramming fingerprint scanners into its GPS units for a little while now, but it looks like it's now firmly committed to the technology, with its latest batch of models each packing the extra level of security. Those include the GoPal P5235, P5435 and X5535, which each boast a 5-inch touchscreen display, voice recognition, and live traffic updates, plus a nearly identical appearance. The P5435 one-ups things slightly over the P5235 with some handsfree Bluetooth calling, while the X5535 goes all out with a built-in gyrometer that promises to pick up some of the slack when the GPS signals drop out. No word on a price or release date for any of 'em just yet, unfortunately, but we wouldn't expect the base model to be too far off the $269 that the nearly identical model that just hit Europe demands.

[Via Electronista]

It's been a nice little while since we've seen any new navigators from Medion, but the outfit's hitting back with its relatively forgettable GoPal P5430. The European PND sports a 5-inch touchscreen display, integrated TMC antenna, fingerprint sensor, text-to-speech functionality, an inbuilt FM transmitter and pre-installed NAVTEQ maps of Western and Eastern Europe. Like we said, forgettable -- but you should know it's priced at £175 ($269) just in case you're tempted.

[Via NaviGadget]

Medion launches 5-inch GoPal P5430 GPS in Europe originally appeared on Engadget on Sat, 29 Nov 2008 04:18:00 EST.
It may be small change compared to the batches of Centrino 2 laptops some other manufacturers are trotting out, but Medion apparently isn't about to let the launch go by without throwing its hat in the ring, and it's now debuted its first entry: the 15.4-inch Akoya S5610 laptop. This one looks like it'll be able to hold its own, however, with it packing a 2.0GHz Core 2 Duo P7350 processor, ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3470 graphics with 256MB of RAM, a 320GB hard drive, and 3GB of RAM as standard, plus the usual perks like a 1.3 megapixel webcam and a fingerprint reader. No word on a release 'round these parts, but those in the UK will be able to get their hands one on by the end of this month for £600 (or about $1,200).

Just days after going on sale in Europe for €399, the Wind-esque Akoya mini laptop has been acquired and unboxed for all to see. As it stands, we're still not certain if this thing will ever head to US soil, but judging by the remarkable similarities to a few other low-cost lappies, we reckon we'll survive if it decides to stay put. Head on to the read link for a look at the shots.

[Via SlashGear]

Medion Akoya E1210 netbook gets unboxed originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 01 Jul 2008 12:56:00 EST. Here's a peculiar one. Medion's Akoya Mini -- you know, just one of the legions of low-cost laptops you've barely heard of -- is finally on sale after being showcased at Computex. But it's not the mere fact of being on sale that's intriguing; for whatever reason, Medion has decided to offer the unit up in Austria's Hofer, which is the foreign equivalent of America's Aldi. So you know, while you're browsing around picking up a few bits of produce and a 20-pack of Fun Dip, why not snag a 10-inch netbook for €399 ($628) to round things out?

[Thanks, hondosan]

Medion's Atom-powered Akoya Mini laptop now on sale originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 27 Jun 2008 19:49:00 EST. The last time we saw this downsized Atom-based laptop, it was looking staid and proper in a press shot. Finally someone has gotten their hands on this thing, and we've got to say -- it looks pretty handsome (even if it is a rebadged, recolored MSI Wind, and a dead ringer for the Mini-Note). Specs seem unchanged, with a 10-inch 1024 x 800 display, 80GB hard drive, 1GB of RAM, and a 1.3-megapixel webcam, and the price appears to be holding at €399 (or about $630) as well. Still no word on when or if this is going to hit the states, but we've got our fingers crossed.

Medion's Akoya Mini laptop gets pictured at Computex originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 09 Jun 2008 11:07:00 EST. Chances are, you didn't really need another option for a pink travel guide, but if that rosy nüvi just isn't as sparkly as it once was, Medion's lookin' out for you. The outfit has just released its GoPal E3215 Glamour Edition, which reportedly features a perfectly average 3.5-inch color touchscreen, 1.7-centimeter thick frame, speed camera database and maps of Western Europe. Of course, a pink GPS wouldn't be a pink GPS without a matching carry case, but all things considered, we still can't see spending £149.99 ($296) on a cute-but-ho hum piece such as this.

[Via TechGadgets, thanks Yossi]

Medion GoPal E3215 Glamour Edition comes in pink and pink originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 23 May 2008 03:23:00 EST. The Eee-sparked trend towards smaller, cheaper laptops continues unabated -- which is good news if you like small, cheap things. The latest entry into the ultraportable market comes in the form of the Medion Akoya Mini, a handsome looking entry that clearly aims to compete with ASUS' wunderkind. The 10-inch laptop scores big points right out of the box due to its inclusion of Intel's infamous Atom CPU. The system will feature a traditional hard drive, with some form of Linux on-board, 1GB of RAM standard, two USB ports, a memory card slot, VGA out, and a 1.3 megapixel webcam. No word on if we'll see this in the States, but it's hitting Europe soon with a starting price of €399 (or about $638).

[Via le Journal du Geek; Thanks, Anh]

Medion's Akoya Mini takes aim at the Eee originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 23 Apr 2008 09:56:00 EST. Microsoft's Windows Home Server is saying balls to its dicey launch year and rallying the troops for a holiday hardware blitz. Its original hardware launch partner HP's on-sale-again-off-sale-again MediaSmart Home Server is officially back and on sale (huzzah!), and multiple hardware partners are (re)announcing their own boxes.

Up to bat with new and "new" WHS hardware: Fujitsu-Siemens, Gateway, Iomega, LaCie, Leo Computers, LifeWare, Maxdata, Medion, and Tranquil. Sure, some have already announced, but those named today will either be introducing new WHS gear in short order, or at least intend to in the next quarter. Also getting official and on sale today: Velocity Micro's NetMagix (previously VMHS). Expect it with a Core 2 Duo, 1GB of RAM, eSATA, gigabit Ethernet, front / rear USB, and up to 4TB of storage (starting at $1000 for 1TB).

P.S. -We're sure Microsoft would like us to remind you of the burgeoning WHS software add-on scene, with the dozens of apps now written for the platform. That's all well and good, but we'll worry about getting that hardware first, then take a look at that software.

Gallery: Windows Home Server launches hardware blitz for holidays

Windows Home Server launches hardware blitz for holidays originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 05 Nov 2007 00:00:00 EST. Additionally, you'll find a 4.3-inch widescreen display, a rechargeable Li-ion that's good for four to five hours before needing a boost, and full western Europe maps complete with "a preloaded safety camera database with major route speed limit warnings." Looks like IFA had a bit of a Windows Home Server bonanza this year, with four models being demoed from the likes of HP, MaxData, Fujitsu-Siemens, and Medion. Fujitsu-Siemens were showing off their 1TB Scaleo Home Server 1900 and 500GB Scaleo 1500 at the launch event, which features 4 internal drive bays, 30db operation, and 256MB of on-board flash for support in case of a "critical error." MaxData was also ready to enter the WHS fray with its o.Center, an orange and white affair with four drive bays and an expected ship date of late October. Finally, there was HP and Medion with their respective offerings -- the MD 90110 for Medion, and the MediaSmart for HP -- on show and in the flesh. Not long to wait now, you home media hosting addict you.

[Thanks, Terry W.]

New HP, MaxData, Medion, and Fujitsu-Siemens Windows Home Servers demoed originally appeared on Engadget on Sat, 01 Sep 2007 15:18:00 EST. Just as HP reportedly delayed its own Windows Home Server-based device, Medion's iteration is getting all fleshed out, so let's get right down to the dirt, shall we? Apparently, the MD 90110 will feature an AMD Sempron 64 or Intel P4 LGA 775, an AMD RS-690 / Intel 945GC chipset, be based on a MicroATX motherboard, and include 1GB of RAM, between 500GB and 2TB of RAID storage space, an eSATA port, gigabit Ethernet, and four USB 2.0 connectors. Additionally, users can look forward to "screwless internal hard drive bays," a recovery button, HDD status LEDs, and a variety of configurations to fit your needs (and budget). Per usual, there's no hard data available just yet in regard to pricing or release dates, but we'll keep you posted.

[Via WeGotServed]

Medion's Windows Home Server-based MD 90110 gets detailed originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 31 Aug 2007 03:25:00 EST. While he didn't offer any updates to the ambiguous "later this year" release date, he did mention that Gateway, LaCie and Medion will join HP to delivery their own hardware products based on WHS. Specifically, the DLNA-compliant Medion Home Server will offer up to 2TB of storage and should ship before the year is up. Oh, and in case you're responsible for the corporate IT budget and staff allocation, you'll be interested to know that Gates and co. are on track with Windows Server 2008 -- formerly known as Windows Server "Longhorn" -- release for the second half of 2007.

Gateway, LaCie and Medion join the Windows Home Server party originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 16 May 2007 09:04:00 EST. The GoPal S2310 and X4510 (pictured after the jump) purportedly utilize NAVTEQ maps and come in a trio of flavors, including ME (Medium Edition), AE (Advanced Edition) and PE (Premium Edition). The smaller S2310 touts a 3.5-inch LCD, curvaceous design, shock-resistant casing, route tracking system, and an ability to export to Google Earth in order to scrutinize just how lost you ended up. The Windows CE-powered X4510 ups the ante with a four-inch screen, electronic compass, microSD slot, 324MHz Atlas II processor, 256MB of integrated RAM, handsfree Bluetooth capability, built-in RDS / TMC receiver in the Premium iteration, an MP3 player, and an image viewer to boot. No word just yet on release dates, but the S2310 should hit for right around €299 ($398), while the beefed up X4510 will likely demand €499 ($664).
Continue reading Medion unveils GoPal X4510 / S2310 navigation units at CeBIT

Medion unveils GoPal X4510 / S2310 navigation units at CeBIT originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 20 Mar 2007 20:22:00 EST. The UMPC is a relative no-show here at CES compared to its viral, CeBIT 2006 origins. Still, we managed to track down and get up close and personal with devices like the Kohjinsha SA1F00A, Samsung PH-P9000, OQO Model 02, and Medion and even checked a preview of the new Origami Experience UI for Vista. HTC's UMPC, which may or not be the Athena, is absent but there's still hope for a formal announcement in March at the CTIA wireless show. In a surreal moment, we even witnessed a visibly shaken Intel exec demonstrating "Yahoo! Go for UMPC" to Yahoo's CFO while a VIA exec (Intel's biggest competition on this platform) quietly snaked through the crowd nearby. Only at CES, friends. We also managed to extract the UMPC v2 reference designs from the recessed bowels of Intel -- displayed almost as an afterthought, not a highlight. The verdict? Vista on these new UMPCs coupled with the new Origami Experience UI is a big step in the right direction. The "Yahoo UMPC" reference design we saw at Intel's IDF felt very solid in the hand, and features a well positioned thumbpad we found easy to use while holding the device two handed -- a design which might have a chance of success if picked up by an OEM. Intel also has a few new reference designs under glass: a chubby, slim-screened slider and another perched in a fat brown media dock with integrated DVD and AV outs. The Medion? Forget it, the keyboard is plain and simply, unusable and the device felt poorly engineered. Word is that Intel will have their new, ultra-low power mobile processor for these v2 UMPCs ready before the end of Q2. That, coupled with Vistagami might finally give the platform a fighting chance this summer. Check the gallery for plenty of UMPC action.

We've started seeing UMPCs crop up everywhere. At Via's booth at ShowStoppers, there were about seven different UMPCs, but the Medion caught our eye. We hear from some other folks it's got pretty good battery life for a UMPC, and you should be able to get it in your own hands for under ten benjamins. After we stopped by Intel's booth to give it a more thorough run through, the keyboard was frankly crap, so caveat emptor. Download it below, or watch the usual flash video above.

[MP4] Download the video

Video: Medion's UMPC originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 11 Jan 2007 13:41:00 EST. The last we saw or heard about a UMPC from Medion was way back in September when a grainy image of such a device was leaked at IFA. Turns out that the grainy image was real, as Bill Gates recently demonstrated a UMPC device from Medion at his CES keynote in order to tout a new version of Microsoft's Origami Experience user interface. In a move sure to please readers interested in the impressive specs list of the MD RIM 1000 -- 6.5-inch touchscreen, 802.11b/g WiFi, Bluetooth 2.0, onboard GPS, DVB-T tuner and webcam -- Medion's first UMPC is to be made available on Jan 30, which happens to be the same date that Microsoft plans to release this other piece of software you may or may not have heard about.

Medion UMPC confirmed, coming January 30 originally appeared on Engadget on Sun, 07 Jan 2007 21:31:00 EST. We're not really sure why anyone needs a crystal-encrusted LED belt buckle, nor an iced-out Xbox, but Medion clearly thinks that a sparkly (with 300 Swarovski crystals) laptop is the best way to attract female users, despite our skepticism. Looking beyond the exterior, the SIM 2060 laptop packs a 1.73GHz Core Duo chip, a 12.1-inch screen, 1GB of DDR2 RAM, a 100GB hard drive, WiFi, Bluetooth, gigabit Ethernet, a SD/MMC/Memory Stick card reader, an ExpressCard 54 slot, and a dual-layer DVD burner -- all of that will set you back £1,000 ($1,900). Not a bad deal considering that a fridge with 7,000 such crystals went for 10 times that price.

[Via Reg Hardware]

Medion SIM 2060 laptop iced out with 300 crystals originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 06 Nov 2006 23:25:00 EST. Medion, better known for its low-end consumer electronics that blanket Europe, has just trotted out three new GoPal GPS navigation units on the cheap. Each device measures just 130 x 90 x 20mm (5.1 x 3.5 x 0.78 inches), and includes 2D and sorta-3D directions with the included Berlitz City Guides for 50 major cities on the continent. And if that wasn't enough, apparently Medion is also including "speed camera locations saved to the memory card" so you can attempt to avoid hefty fines while zooming down the autoroute. The trio of navigation units come in three flavors, the PNA 460, 465 and 470, which range from £200 ($371) to £300 ($557). The basic model, the PNA 460, comes with maps of the UK and Ireland on a 256MB memory card, while additional European maps will set you back £80 ($148). The middle-level gives your all those European maps pre-installed, and comes with a Traffic Message Channel receiver so you can get around those jams as you barrel down on somewhere like Geneva. Finally, the flagship of the bunch comes with standard maps but also has integrated Bluetooth so you can make hands-free calls in your car and keep your eye on navigating that treacherous autobahn.

Medion GoPal PNA 460, 465, and 470 bring inexpensive GPS originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 18 Oct 2006 05:35:00 EST. Medion is one of those low-end, consumer electronics manufactures whose products sell in the likes of Aldi, Woolworths, and Toys 'R Us around Europe. Still, they bring some design cred as demonstrated in this Akoya RIM 2550. This unspecified "Dual Core" all-in-oner brings Windows Media Center to that big 22-inch display and features 802.11b/g WiFi, Bluetooth 2.0, a DVD-burner, ExpressCard slot and suite of USB and Firewire jacks, Gigabit Ethernet, an integrated webcam in the bezel, and a dual analog/digital TV-tuner for good PVR'in fun. Yeah, the keyboard is wireless, but if you're a lefty just forget about using the touchpad, unless of course you bat from both sides of the plate. No drop date but expect the 2550 to pull €1,399 / $1,785 sometime before the sun burns itself out.

[Via gadgetzone (in Dutch)]

Medion's Akoya RIM 2550: 22-inches of all-in-one Media Center originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 08 Sep 2006 08:51:00 EST. All we've got to go on here is a grainy scan from some Medion press materials being handed out at IFA, but if this new MD RIM 1000 UMPC proves to be for reals we'll have another welcome contestant in the slide-out keyboard space -- which is where we've been at all along when it comes to UMPCs. The specs aren't bad neither, with a 6.5-inch touchscreen, 802.11b/g WiFi, Bluetooth 2.0, onboard GPS, DVB-T tuner and webcam. In fact, if this thing manages to weigh less than thirty pounds and cost less than twenty grand we're pretty sure Medion has got themselves a winner -- or should at least be able to give Sony's UX and Averatec's forthcoming AHI a bit of competition.
Filed under: Handhelds, Portable Video, Tablet PCs

Medion working on MD RIM 1000 UMPC with slide-out keyboard? originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 07 Sep 2006 10:51:00 EST. The company seems to make everything (or else their logo sure gets around), and this time the label appears by way of a new budget laptop. The MIM 2220 is a predictably average machine that sports a 15.4-inch WXGA display, a dual-layer DVD burner, WiFi, 256MB of RAM, 40GB HD, and a trio of USB 2.0 ports along with a FireWire connector. Surprisingly, the notebook is powered by a 1.7GHz Intel Pentium M processor, which is a notch above the Celeron we anticipated. But the run-of-the-mill specs are overshadowed by the bargain basement pricetag (just £400) and the option to have Medion (or whoever really makes this thing) emboss any picture onto the lid of the machine for another £45. While the uniqueness of the offering -- and the delightfully low price point -- may draw in a few customers, you may want to think twice about about completely ruining its (small) resale value by plastering your face on it. Might we suggest something a little more cheeky, perhaps?

While we can't vouch forthe quality of a 32-inch LCD making its debut at Toys 'R Us locations around the UK for under $1,100, the specs onMedion's upcoming MD 20099 don't look half bad. The Medion offers a 1,366 x 768 pixel display, 1000:1 contrast ratio,550cd/m² brightness, and even an HDCP-capable HDMI input, alongwith dual-tuner PIP, split-screen text, and built-in 20-watt sound system with five-band equalizer. Again, we're notsure what to expect from the performance of this model, but if you happen to be in a British Toys 'R Us at the end ofthe month when this model is debuted, make sure to leave your impressions in the comments.

Medion's UK-bound MD 20099 32-inch LCD originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 05 May 2006 11:55:00 EST.
