Selfies, cardboard boxes, cuddly toys, balloons, robots, Kiefer Sutherland and tons of violence. No, it's not the 24 Christmas party but in fact the video premiere for the new Metal Gear Online, as showcased during last week's Game Awards. If you missed it over the weekend, you can check it out now below the break. And yes, that is who you think it is in the photo above. Konami also released a bundle of new screens this morning which you view in the gallery, along with some info about MGO. As per last generation's edition and Metal Gear Solid 4, MGO is Konami's name for the online multiplayer mode in Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain. While it gets its own fancy title like Grand Theft Auto Online, like Rockstar's offering it's included with The Phantom Pain at no additional cost. Konami also revealed players can expect a class system in the new multiplayer mode, along with appearances from familiar faces like, yup, Ocelot. Also, it's confirmed MGO is going live and online with the launch of The Phantom Pain, which remains due for sometime in 2015.

Just because legendary super spy Solid Snake tends to fly solo doesn't mean you have to: Metal Gear Online is coming back, reintroducing the deadly game of cats-and-also-cats to the Metal Gear series. To go along with this revelation, there's some good news and bad news. The bad news is we don't know anything else about this new version of MGO yet. The good news is we won't have to wait long to find out more, as series creator Hideo Kojima will premiere Metal Gear Online at The Game Awards, which will air December 5. We assume there will be plenty of ! in the audience. [Image: Konami]

Bad news, fraudulent network connectors: Your days of slowing down Metal Gear Online are over! Konami has issued a -- way past-due -- patch for the online component of MGS4, which detects "fraudulent" connections and (we assume) blocks them, freeing up all kinds bandwidth for ... hello ... anybody?

  • Metal Gear Arcade mixes 3D glasses with head-tracking for this season's hottest new look

Despite a few harrying run-ins with some large white tents at Manhattan's Fashion Week-hosting Bryant Park, we can honestly say we have no idea what's "in" this year for arcade gaming headgear. Still, even with Konami's lack of zebra print or a sly celebrity endorsement, we've got to hand it to them for this fashionable new "Metal Gear Arcade" number. The arcade game is based on Metal Gear Online, but the head gear adds 3D and head-tracking to the experience. There's also a physical gun controller, and the sit down arcade cabinets pump out your gunplay in huge 5.1 sound. This new arcade incarnation of the game will be playable at the AUO Expo in Japan this week, but we have no idea how long it will be until we can look this badass from the comfort of our own couch. Hit up the source link for a riveting video in Japanese that details this exclusive, outside-the-house experience.

Metal Gear Arcade, which has been sneaking under the radar since its unveiling last June, is playable at Japan's AOU Expo this week. To mark the occasion, Konami has released a new trailer and two new screenshots of the Metal Gear Online–based arcade cabinet. The trailer is available on the game's website. Konami has also provided a first look at the 3D glasses used to enable the game's "Integral Vision" effect. It's going to be totally worth putting on those goofy glasses, even after some sweaty guy just used them: not only do they create a 3D effect, the glasses also enable head-tracking. Where you look, Snake looks. To further immerse you in the experience, Metal Gear Arcade also has a mic for voice chat and a giant speaker system surrounding your head. !. %Gallery-86026%

Konami has a whole week of "surprises" lined up for the one-year anniversary of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots' release. So, surprise: Metal Gear Online has received an unlikely update in the form of bikini-clad babes. Rather than draw form the series' pool of female characters, the pack lets players roll their own originals, complete with sultry -- even scandalous! -- "taunts."The DLC is free for players who already have the GENE expansion pack purchased and installed. No amount of money will get your dignity back after friends catch you testing the ladies' over-the-top "jiggle simulation." (Or simply watching the video of others doing it after the break.)

Konami has released a new trailer of its coin-op Metal Gear Online spinoff Metal Gear Arcade, showing us not only gameplay footage, but a few shots of the sit-down arcade cabinet that houses the game, including one shot of four cabinets connected. The machine uses a 3D display combined with 3D glasses for what the trailer calls "Integral Vision." See the trailer after the break. And to see Integral Vision for yourself -- kinda -- check our gallery for a few 3D stereograms of the game. You're free to print them out and look at them through a stereoscope, or make animated Wiggle Vision images out of them. %Gallery-65709%[Via GameSetWatch]

  • Metal Gear Online 'Race Mission' detailed, 'Patriot' perk sounds like a cheat

    05.11.2009

Konami has released more specifics on the new "Race Mission" mode and "Patriot" feature for Metal Gear Online we first told you about last week. First up, the Race Mission is aptly titled, as it sees two teams attempting to pass through racing game style checkpoints after tracking down their oh-so-adorable frog and duck KEROTAN and GA-KO items. The mode's rules state that if the item is dropped and not picked up in time, its team will have to seek it out at a random spawn point. We're only guessing that the match is won by whichever team passes through the most checkpoints with cuddly mascot in-hand, as Konami oddly left that bit out. All will be revealed come May 12.Not forgotten in today's update was word of the Patriot system, which -- at least at first -- sounds like a cool reward for the game's best players. Basically, the game will select a random set of top players each week as "Patriots," granting them access to a Patriot .56mm "hand rifle" ... which has infinite ammo and doesn't require reloading. Let's see: MGO's best players with infinite ammo and no need to reload. Sounds fair, right? We'll find out how it works out starting May 26.

We're just about a month away from the one year anniversary of Metal Gear Solid 4's release. In spite of a cumbersome Konami ID system, the game's packaged Metal Gear Online mode has seen a number of add-ons, with no end in sight. On May 12th, MGO players will be able to enjoy a new game mode, "Race Mission," which will be available to "all players, not just those who have purchased SCENE." In this mode, the two teams must protect a certain target while passing through various checkpoints. It looks as though some major updates are still in the works for the Metal Gear universe. Konami's Brandon Laurino teased PlayStation.Blog readers, stating that the team still has "even more awesome stuff" to celebrate the game's one year anniversary with. What could this entail? We'll let you cook up some conspiracy theories as we count down to June.

click to embiggen It's about time that Metal Gear Online got back on the scene with a brand-new expansion pack. As revealed by Famitsu, this third DLC pack from Konami, titled "Scene," brings more Metal Gear Solid 4 characters and new map locales into the online battlefield. Both Vamp and Raiden will be added to the playable roster in this expansion, and three new territories are available to explore: "Hazard House" (a countryside manor), "Outer Outlet" (a shopping arcade) and "Revaged [sic] Riverfront" (a riverside town). Though these first details currently only pertain to a Japanese release, we expect Scene to hit worldwide just like the Gene and Meme expansions that came before it. There are only two questions left that need answering: When should we expect Scene to arrive .... and what new word that rhymes with "spleen" will Konami use for the next expansion?[Update: Konami just sent out a press release stating that the Scene expansion will be available in North America by March. Those who pre-order the pack off Konami's shop one week ahead of release will get complimentary "cardboard man" headgear. We've also got new screen shots and some new details on the maps after the break.]%Gallery-45226%

"Come in, Colonel. This is Snake.""Read you loud and clear, Snake. Did you need me to tell you how to climb a ladder?""I KNOW HOW TO ... forget it. I hear there's a new mission available.""That's right. Top secret, black ops stuff. It's an OSWP MGO GTFO mission, lemming priority.""L -- lemming?! Colonel, what aren't you telling me?""I'm not not telling you nothing, Snake, so relax. Konami is releasing a free mode for Metal Gear Online on January 27th. It's called Bomb Mission.""Bomb Mission, huh? What is it that I'm infiltrating? Haze?""...""That's like a joke.""Be serious! This isn't single-player DLC, Snake! This is a mode for the online part of your game, where one team aims to detonate bombs before the allotted time runs out, while the opposing group attempts to freeze the bombs with coolant spray. Just like the Big Shell mission.""What do you mean, 'online mode?!' Is this one of those crazy plot twists!?""I'm afraid it's much worse than that. It's an asinine blog post that obfuscates a mundane news item by inserting popular characters and tedious humor into a contrived, vaguely informative situation.""Dammit, Colonel! This is worse than that time we found out we were living inside a computer!" Gallery: Metal Gear Online: Bomb Mission

Konami announced this morning that Metal Gear Online has enlisted its 1 millionth soldier. To celebrate, the publisher is launching an in-game "Commemorative Campaign" from November 25 to December 9. Anyone who logs into MGO during that period will receive 10,000 reward points (to be added after Dec. 9) that can be used at the in-game rewards shop. Additionally, 30 people (10 from Europe, North American and Japan) will win 100,000 reward points in a draw being held on December 16. We can't help but read this news as disappointing for Konami (we already know Kojima's unhappy). Metal Gear Solid 4 -- that is, the single player component of MGO -- shipped 3 million worldwide at launch and continues to sell. The publisher has announced a second expansions, MEME, due out later this year. A GENE/MEME bundle of both expansions will be available this "holiday season" for $14.99. Not included in the expansions: A Konami ID disintegration device. Gallery: Metal Gear Online "Meme" expansion

In honor of reaching a count of one million members worldwide for Metal Gear Online, Konami plans to celebrate and treat MGO players to an early Thanksgiving. Starting November 25 and running until December 9, Konami is awarding all MGO players with 10,000 reward points which they can use in the in-game online shop. Just log into MGO during the redemption period, and you'll get the points. Also, those who avail of the free 10,000 points may be one of the 30 lucky people to receive an additional 100,000 reward points. 10 people from each region (Japan, North America, Europe) will be selected on December 16, after the main Commemorative Campaign ends. If that's not enough, then there's always the special Gene/Meme bundle pack to grab at $14.99. This dual expansion bundle will be available sometime during the "holiday season."
