You won't have to wait until March to get your hands on Lenovo's 10-inch Miix 2; much to our surprise, the budget-friendly convertible tablet is already on sale. Just be prepared to pay extra for early access. The company is offering only higher-end versions of the Windows 8.1 slate, which currently starts at $699 for a WiFi model with 128GB of storage. The promised $499 variant isn't listed on Lenovo's site as of this writing. While it's hard to complain too much about the higher price given the unexpectedly quick launch, those who want the cheapest edition of this mid-size Miix 2 will have to be patient. [Thanks, Augustus]

Well, this is a little confusing. After releasing the Miix 2, an 8-inch Windows tablet, Lenovo is announcing two more products called the Miix 2, except these aren't even tablets, but rather, detachable laptops. True to their name, the Miix 2 10 and 11 have 10.1- and 11.6-inch screens, respectively, and come with both a tablet and keyboard dock. In particular, as you can see in the photo above, you can insert the tablet with the screen facing either in or out -- yep, just like on last year's ThinkPad Helix, not to mention Lenovo's growing Yoga line. Either way, you get a 1,920 x 1,080 IPS display, an eight-hour battery, dual 5MP/2MP cameras, optional 3G, a microSD slot, micro-HDMI, JBL speakers and a full-sized USB port on the dock. Aside from screen size, the biggest difference is in processing power: The 10-inch model uses a low-power Intel Bay Trail processor with up to 128GB of storage, whereas the bigger guy packs a more powerful Core i5 chip. What's more, that model goes up to 256 gigs of space, not 128. The Miix 2 10 is slated to arrive in March, starting at $499, with the 11-incher following in April for $699.

  • Hands-on with the Lenovo Miix2 8-inch Windows 8.1 tablet

Yesterday, we welcomed into the world the Miix2, Lenovo's fresh entrant into the eight-inch Windows 8.1 tablet market. So when we spotted this newborn slate at a recent Pepcom event in San Francisco, we decided to take it for a spin. Our initial impressions veer positive. We admired the colorful 1,200 x 800 HD display and the 178-degree viewing angle certainly seemed sufficient to our eyes. There might be little too much bezel at the top and bottom for some, but that's a minor quibble. Measuring 8.48 inches x 5.18 inches x 0.32 inch, the Mixx2's all-plastic build doesn't feel quite as premium as metal, but its glossy front and smooth rear finish prevents it from feeling cheap. On the right side are the microUSB charging port, a microSD slot that accommodates up to 32GB cards, the volume rocker and the power button. Other specs of the Miix2 include GPS, Bluetooth 4.0 LE, 802.11 b/g/n WiFi and up to 128GB of eMMC onboard storage. Baked inside the Miix2 are Intel's quad-core Bay Trail-T Atom processor -- the same chip you'll find in the current wave of similarly sized Dells and Acers -- along with integrated Intel HD graphics. There wasn't too much lag when swiping through the tiled Start screen or the app menu, but we did detect a bit of a delay when launching apps and snapping pics. Typing with the on-screen keyboard seemed smooth enough. Though it's difficult to tell from such a short experience, photos from the 2-megapixel front-facing camera appeared rather grainy and we weren't exactly blown away by the low-light performance of the 5-megapixel rear shooter (That said, we're guessing most people don't choose tablets based solely on the camera). As for the Miix2's optional cover case or capacitive stylus, they were unavailable for us to test. Still, at first blush, the Miix2 seems like a decent offering if you want full fat Windows 8.1 tucked in a slim package for a not unreasonable price. For a closer look at the Miix2, check out our hands-on gallery below or simply wait until later this month to pick one up for a starting price of $299 each.

Remember when we reviewed Acer's (sorta crappy) W3 tablet, and assured you it wouldn't be long before we saw more 8-inch Windows 8.1 tablets? Well, with that latest Windows update due out tomorrow, you'd better believe the smaller Windows tablets are about to start pouring in. Now that we've heard from Dell, Lenovo is also getting in the game: it just debuted the Miix2, its first 8-inch Windows 8.1 tab. Like pretty much every other 8-incher that's about to be announced, it runs on one of Intel's new quad-core Bay Trail processors, rocks a 1,200 x 800 display, and comes with Microsoft Office installed. Even the camera specs are on par with other models: you get a 2-megapixel webcam in the front, and a 5MP shooter around back. If you're feeling fancy, you can also buy a cover case and a capacitive stylus. Expect to see it on shelves later this month, with a starting price of $299 -- though if money is no object, there's also going to be a tricked-out version with a full 128 gigs of storage inside.
