There are <em>netbooks</em> and then there's the HP Mini 5102. Or at least that's always been our impression of the 10-inch business and education targeted laptop, since it isn't every day that you see what's supposed to be a secondary system with a 7,200rpm hard drive, durable aluminum chassis, spill resistant keyboard and capacitive touchscreen options. Or you know, a $415 starting price. The Mini 5102 doesn't fall into the same class as those $299 netbooks -- considering our review unit rings up at $668 and all -- but does the extra dough really pay off in a noticeably better shrunken computing experience? We've been on a mission to find out just that over the last few days, so hit the break for our full review. <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hp-mini-5102-review/">HP MIni 5102 review</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hp-mini-5102-review/#2897863"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/04/hpmini5102gal01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hp-mini-5102-review/#2897864"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/04/hpmini5102gal02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hp-mini-5102-review/#2897866"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/04/hpmini5102gal03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hp-mini-5102-review/#2897867"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/04/hpmini5102gal04_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hp-mini-5102-review/#2897868"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/04/hpmini5102gal05_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/16/hp-mini-5102-review/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>HP Mini 5102 review</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/16/hp-mini-5102-review/">HP Mini 5102 review</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 16 Apr 2010 10:50:00 EST. Coveting a beautiful new netbook but can't <em>quite </em>manage the $399 for a new <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/mini5101|mini5102">HP Mini 5101/5102</a>? Maybe this knock-off would fit your budget, looking more or less indistinguishable from the real thing. The ports have a slightly different layout (with some of them looking a wee bit askew) and the red hue here doesn't have quite the same lustre of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hp-mini-5102-hands-on/#2583494">the real thing</a> -- but it is awfully close, right down to the chrome HP logo on the lid. How much would you pay for this piece of impressioned gadgetry? How about $337? Sure, the difference is enough to cover a copy of Heavy Rain, but could you live with yourself typing your e-mail every day on a <em>lie</em>? Beyond that, we have a suspicion this thing wouldn't last much longer than the Origami Killer's victims.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/06/keepin-it-real-fake-hp-mini-5101-knockoff-looks-as-good-as-the/">Keepin' it real fake: HP Mini 5101 knockoff is almost as good, almost as expensive as the real thing</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Sat, 06 Mar 2010 16:13:00 EST. HP's netbooks can have a tendency to really creep up in price as you pile on the specs, but you can't fault them for options. Particularly this new Atom N450-based Mini 5102, which is aimed at business and education use. You can tweak the 10-inch laptop with a WSVGA or WXGA screen, Broadcom HD video acceleration, and just about any OS you could think of: FreeDOS, SUSE Linux, Windows XP and Windows 7 (Starter and Home Premium). You can also squeeze a capacitive multitouch screen into the 0.9-inch form factor and take your pick from a 4-cell or 6-cell battery. Like we said, lots of options.<br />
<br />
As far as fit and finish, the laptop isn't that far divergent from the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/07/24/hp-mini-5101-ready-for-use-by-mini-executives/">Mini 5101</a>, which certainly isn't a bad thing. We love the quality, no-frills feel and look, and the optional handle (which has to be picked at the time of order, since it's integrated) is surprisingly nice and handy. If we had one gripe it would be the oppressive screen bezel, but at least it leaves room for a 95%-sized keyboard, and the brushed aluminum screen back is a nice touch. <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hp-mini-5102-press-shots/">HP Mini 5102 press shots</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hp-mini-5102-press-shots/#2583699"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/01/hp-5102-1-pr_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hp-mini-5102-press-shots/#2583700"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/01/hp-5102-2-pr_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hp-mini-5102-press-shots/#2583701"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/01/hp-5102-3-pr_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div> <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hp-mini-5102-hands-on/">HP Mini 5102 hands-on</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hp-mini-5102-hands-on/#2583494"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/01/hp-dsc_0001_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hp-mini-5102-hands-on/#2583495"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/01/hp-dsc_0002_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hp-mini-5102-hands-on/#2583496"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/01/hp-dsc_0003_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hp-mini-5102-hands-on/#2583497"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/01/hp-dsc_0005_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hp-mini-5102-hands-on/#2583498"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/01/hp-dsc_0009_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/06/hp-mini-5102-has-optional-handle-and-touchscreen-the-drive-to-s/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>HP Mini 5102 has optional handle and touchscreen; the drive to succeed</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/06/hp-mini-5102-has-optional-handle-and-touchscreen-the-drive-to-s/">HP Mini 5102 has optional handle and touchscreen; the drive to succeed</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 06 Jan 2010 00:01:00 EST. The Mini 5101, or Mini Executive as HP would have it, is now available to purchase, with prices starting at $399.99. While still a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/netbook">netbook</a> at heart, the 5101 has an impressive array of accoutrements: aluminum and magnesium shell for lightweight (2.64 lbs) sturdiness, flat chiclet keyboard, 10.1-inch LED-backlit display, and at an extra cost, 128GB SSD and 1366 x 768 resolution upgrade options. The build quality and keyboard <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/24/hp-mini-5101-cleans-up-nice-shows-the-serious-side-of-netbooks/">got high marks</a> from us when we handled the machine back in June, and now a couple of online scribes have put together timely in-depth reviews of the device. They share the impression that HP has a strong business product on its hands, highlighted by a class-leading WiFi signal of 37.7 Mbps at 15 feet, though they were also concerned that neither pricing nor battery life (between 5 and 7 hours) are the best available. Hit up the read links for all the delectable details.<br /><br />[Thanks, Knifex4]<br /><br /><a href="http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/us/en/sm/WF05a/321957-321957-64295-3841267-3955550-3973865.html">Read</a> - HP product page<br /><a href="http://www.laptopmag.com/review/laptop/hp-mini-5101.aspx">Read</a> - Laptop Mag review<br /><a href="http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2350657,00.asp">Read</a> - PC Mag review<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/laptops/" rel="tag">Laptops</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/07/24/hp-mini-5101-ready-for-use-by-mini-executives/">HP Mini 5101 netbook approved for use by mini executives</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 24 Jul 2009 04:23:00 EST. Yes, that's the one and only MJ to open the podcast -- this one was recorded just shortly after the Engadget crew had learned the news. Join Josh, Paul, Nilay and special guest Chris Ziegler as they deny the Nokia N97, get angry at the HTC Hero, bargain with Windows 7, depress themselves over the fate of the netbook, and finally learn to accept the Zune HD's Tegra processor. We won't lie -- Engadget Podcast 152 was a struggle, but in the end we all learned a little something about life, love, and forgiveness.<br />

<strong>Update:</strong> Any further tasteless MJ jokes will be met with a swift ban. Be nice!<br />

Just when you thought you were <a href="http:// http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/23/entelligence-netbooks-r-i-p/">safe from the netbook horde</a>, along comes HP's new Mini 5101 to tempt you with the same basic specs once again, but this time with a slick aluminum and magnesium chassis to appeal to the "mobile professional" or anyone else with a bit of class. In a crazy twist, HP has <em>finally</em> moved the mouse buttons below the trackpad (because only professionals like clicking), and has included other perks like a 7200 RPM hard drive, Bluetooth 2.0, 2 megapixel webcam, and options of either a WSVGA (1024 x 600) or "HD" (1366 x 768) 10.1-inch LED screen. There are also options for 80GB or 128GB SSD drives, four-cell or six-cell batteries, with the latter rated at an improbable eight hours of runtime, and of course WWAN. There's a start price of $449, but with some of these options we could see that shooting up pretty fast -- especially if you pick the optional USB-powered external disc drive, external speakers or port replicator. It's not cheap being cheap. The Mini 5101 goes on sale in July.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hp-mini-5101-press-shots/">HP Mini 5101 press shots</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hp-mini-5101-press-shots/#2102733"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/06/hp-mini-5101-pr-2sb_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hp-mini-5101-press-shots/#2102732"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/06/hp-mini-5101-pr-3sb_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hp-mini-5101-press-shots/#2102731"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/06/hp-mini-5101-pr-4sb_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />We got a quick hands-on with the netbook, and were fairly impressed. The square chiclet keys are much easier to hunt down than Mini 1000-series flush keys, and the proper trackpad configuration is naturally a huge bonus. We'd much prefer multitouch scrolling to the side-scrolling action, of course, but at least it's an improvement. The overall build quality is near the top of any laptop or netbook we've played with in this price range -- it's not perfect, and there's some of that telltale keyboard flex, but it's a big improvement over its largely plastic competitors and predecessor.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hp-mini-5101-hands-on-shots/">HP Mini 5101 hands-on shots</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hp-mini-5101-hands-on-shots/#2102723"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/06/hp-mini-5101-002_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hp-mini-5101-hands-on-shots/#2102714"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/06/hp-mini-5101-003_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hp-mini-5101-hands-on-shots/#2102724"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/06/hp-mini-5101-004_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hp-mini-5101-hands-on-shots/#2102722"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/06/hp-mini-5101-005_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hp-mini-5101-hands-on-shots/#2102708"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/06/hp-mini-5101-006_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/laptops/" rel="tag">Laptops</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/24/hp-mini-5101-cleans-up-nice-shows-the-serious-side-of-netbooks/">HP Mini 5101 cleans up nice, shows the serious side of netbooks</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 24 Jun 2009 00:02:00 EST.
