It couldn't be that their bread used to contain the same chemicals as yoga mats. It certainly isn't the fact that their high-profile spokesman of 15 years is now serving 15 more in federal prison on charges of sex with minors and child pornography. No, no, no. Obviously the reason that Subway's sales have been in a three-year slump, one of the worst in company history, is that their restaurants aren't sufficiently high tech.

Mobile ordering is big in the UK, so it's surprising to see a big name like McDonald's is only now getting its own systems in order. As BuzzFeed News reports, it today pushed live a new feature in its iOS and Android apps that lets customers in selected locations order and pay for their meal before they go in store. The confirmation comes just days after the company enabled a similar feature in the US.

If you've ever thought that fast food wasn't fast enough, then it looks like McDonald's latest initiative has you covered. The takeout chain has begun trialling mobile ordering at restaurants in Monterey and Salinas, California. Hungry patrons will now be able to select their meal on the way to their nearest location for instant collection. The app will even use your GPS data to determine when your burgers start getting cooked, ensuring your food stays warm and fresh. When you arrive, you just pay through the app and grab that famous brown bag from the counter, drive-thru or curbside collection point.

You might have one more option to choose from if you don't feel like lining up for some fast food. Shake Shack has joined the growing list of food chains with mobile apps that give you a way to order and pay ahead of time. The restaurant has been testing the service in Manhattan for the past few months, but it's now available in multiple locations across the US. Sadly, it's not a full nationwide rollout -- the company left out some locations, including Austin, Dallas and Atlanta. Plus, only the iOS app is available for now, though according to Eater, Shake Shack is also developing an Android application.

  • Starbucks Mobile Order & Pay comes to Android and more UK stores

If there's anything Brits enjoy more than an orderly queue, it's skipping one. That's what the Mobile Order & Pay feature in Starbucks' mobile app is all about, allowing you to skip straight to the in-store collection point, much to the frustration of more patient patrons. The feature launched last autumn for iOS users, and was further limited in that it was only available in select London outlets. From today, however, Mobile Order & Pay is now baked into Starbucks' Android app and furthermore, customers can now order ahead in stores "nationwide" -- or at over 300 participating outlets across the UK, anyway. Perfect if you're late for work and still need an unseasonal mocha frappé to start the day, then.

The day when you no longer have to scream "No, you fool! I ordered a Venti Decaf Non-Fat Pumpkin Spice Latte!" at your barista is finally upon us. Starbucks has tweaked its Android app to bake-in both ordering and payments straight from your phone, saving you the drama of having to explain your arcane coffee needs to another human. The feature was originally tested last December in Portland, and was added to the iOS version of the app back in July. The app will work in the US, Canada and in the UK, although the mobile ordering will only work in stores that the company owns -- there's a big venti question mark over if it'll work in other locations. Oh, and don't shout at your barista, because it's both very rude and a one-way ticket to guaranteeing your coffee has something extra special inside.

  • Starbucks now lets you order and pay through mobile... if you're in Portland

The Starbucks app's mobile ordering feature is finally here after months of speculation and anticipation -- and it's landed first in Portland, Oregon. Naturally. If you want to buy, say, an eggnog latte, you merely have to scroll through or search the menu, pick your items and your store of preference (you can choose an outlet elsewhere instead of the one closest to you), and then pay for it through your phone. The app even lets you customize your drinks like you would in-store, because the company knows its customers' predilection for mixing things up (triple venti soy, non-fat, half-sweet, extra foam eggnog latte with caramel drizzle, anyone?). Once that's done, just swing by the Starbucks you chose, tell the barista your name and you've effectively skipped the mile-long line.
