The Metroid Mod is an impressive recreation of Nintendo's NES classic within punishing roguelike, Spelunky. The mod isn't out yet, but that can't stop you from watching Samus Aran explore Zebes-inspired caverns and avoid giant Metroids, speedy Skrees and even Ridley.

Lwelyk, the Lego mosaicist (mosaician?) behind some truly excellent Nintendo block art, has posted his latest masterpiece, a large-scale model of Metroid's final-boss-in-a-jar. This Mother Brain is "about the size of (Lwelyk's) torso" and took "four or five hours." We can only imagine that part of that time was spent shooting little flying rings so he could get back up on the tiny platform on which he was building the sculpture. Can you imagine how upsetting it would be to walk in and see something like this, especially if you weren't familiar with Metroid? Or, even worse, to wake up in the middle of the night and see this ... mass ... in your house?

The Nintendo Short Cuts film contest has been great for us. We didn't make any films, nor are we giving away any prizes, but we still get to reap the benefits and share lots of Nintendo fanworks with you. The two we're highlighting today are probably our favorites yet.The first video retells the plot of one of our favorite NES games, StarTropics, in a much more subdued style than the original version. It kind of looks like some college dudes were bored one afternoon and decided to go enter the Nintendo thing or whatever. It's astoundingly deadpan, and the total opposite of yesterday's Zelda video. The second video comes from TheTanooki.com, and is a special-effects packed action adventure that mashes up reality and the World of Nintendo. It's got Mother Brain in it, so it's awesome.
