We're live from CEATEC 2012 in Chiba, Japan!
Japan's annual electronics expo is about to kick off in the Tokyo suburb of Chiba, and we've settled down for the week to deliver a peek inside Makuhari Messe, where local carriers will demonstrate their R&D wares, a fair share of robots are expected make their debut and component manufacturers will provide a hint of what's to come. And, because the Tokyo Motor Show is held only once every two years, that winter exhibition will make a smaller appearance within these Chiba halls, with vehicle designers showing off their latest contributions to the automotive industry. The fun begins in just a few minutes, when dozens of diligent guards will lift the gates to the show. As always, you can follow along from home without spending a single yen. Arduino hacker conjures NES and Etch-a-sketch wonderment (video)
You never know when that creative spark will ignite in your brain and compel you to sketch out some ideas. But when that genius moment finally arrives, you might consider grabbing your original Nintendo controller, quickly wiring it up to an Arduino board, connecting that to some motors and then using those to drive the dials on an Etch-a-Sketch. Modder Alpinedelta32 tries it in the video after the break and it turns out to be a breeze -- and so much more tactile than other idea-capturing devices.
Frankfurt Motor Show 2011 wrap-up
The 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show is still rolling, but as the throngs of eager German motor enthusiasts fill the halls we're grabbing our passports and fleeing back to the States. This year's show had more EVs and infotainment-stuffed cars than ever before and, if what we saw here is any indication, the car of the future will have at least one smartphone or tablet built in there somewhere -- maybe two.
