Apple hits HTC with third ITC dispute, One series goes under the gun
Apple chief Tim Cook might have said that he doesn't like lawsuits, but he must have left a loophole open for International Trade Commission disputes. His company quietly filed a third challenge against HTC on June 4th (just now coming to light) that -- surprise -- claims HTC is still violating patents that it supposedly worked hard to avoid. If successful, Apple would slap down 29 devices that include a much more modern set of hardware than the first two disputes, including the One X (and EVO 4G LTE), One S and One V. Apple had success in December with the final results of its first ITC complaint and may simply be rolling the dice to try for more. Whatever throw Apple lands, there's no doubt that HTC and its fans are exasperated at the thought of more launch delays, or worse.

T-Mobile myTouch 4G designer Donn Koh unveils the process, how he brings the heat
Have you ever wanted a look inside the mind of a mobile handset designer? Of course you do, and so do we, for that matter. Donn Koh, lead designer of smartphones like Sprint's Evo 4G and T-Mobile's myTouch 4G as an employee of One&Co, has posted in-depth breakdowns of the design process on his personal website for our perusal. Official Android Updates: Remember the Gingerbread update that's rolling out to the T-Mobile myTouch 4G? If waiting for the OTA download doesn't mesh with your level of patience (or lack thereof), you'll be able to head to a corporate-owned retail store starting August 5th to receive the update manually. [via T-Mobile] The Kyocera Echo's rollout of Gingerbread may be starting tomorrow and getting pushed out to customers over a four-day period. The new refresh also adds Swype 3.0 and security enhancements. [via SprintFeed] Gingerbread is also currently heading to Verizon's Motorola Droid X2. [via AndroidCentral] Sony Ericsson announced that users of the Xperia X10 won't be left off of the Android 2.3 bandwagon either -- it's been confirmed that global and carrier-unlocked versions are receiving the update, though it's up to specific carriers to decide if they want to push the update out as well. [via MobileBurn] Verizon's Droid Incredible 2 is the recipient of a minor software update that aims to improve server connection for email and contacts. The OTA download can be yours by going into settings and having the phone check for updates. [via AndroidCentral] The original HTC Desire's getting its turn for Android 2.3, but the OTA update is currently going out to unbranded devices only. [via HTC Desire Portal] Users have been reporting an issue with their Samsung Fascinates receiving incoming calls after the latest update, and the latest update, called ED05, will be pushed to phones over the next few days to help resolve that concern, while fixing a couple SMS bugs as well. [via Droid-Life] Unofficial updates, custom ROMs, and misc. hackery: A new leaked Gingerbread update for the Samsung Epic 4G, EG22, can be had now. The leak bumps the device up to Android 2.3.4. [via PPC Geeks Forum] The Motorola Triumph hasn't even been out for ten days, but it already has ClockworkMod Recovery. [via AndroidForums] Peter Alfonso's released Android 2.3.5 as a custom download for the original Droid. Follow the via link for instructions on how to download and install it. [via Droid-Life] The Revolutionary S-OFF tool has now been released as an early developer preview. The tool will give you full access to download and install custom ROMs for several devices, including the HTC EVO 3D and Sensation. [via AndroidCentral] Other Platforms: T-Mobile pushed out a firmware update to the HTC HD7 this week, though no change log was provided. If you didn't receive a notification on your phone informing you of the update, connect it to your Zune Desktop and check for updates. T-Mobile myTouch 4G Slide glides into pre-sale for $200
Blessed be the patient ones, for thy reward will be a myTouch 4G Slide. After what seems like an eternity of Mr. Blurrycam shots, press renderings, and an official announcement, it's time to get one ordered. Both black and khaki varieties are available on T-Mobile's website for $200, in advance of the handset reaching store shelves on July 27th. If you're eager to check out "the most advanced camera of any smartphone," with its f2.2 wide-aperture lens, now's your chance -- throw Gingerbread and HTC Sense 3.0 into the mix, and you certainly have a tantalizing phone to consider. Gingerbread heads to T-Mobile myTouch 4G starting today, won't stop anytime soon
Looking to spice up your myTouch 4G? Don't move a muscle. Starting today, T-Mobile will begin taking Gingerbread out of the oven, so to speak, for a limited number of users, with the majority of owners to see it in the weeks ahead. Included in the update is the latest Swype build and compatibility with Exchange 2010 -- along with fixes for Bluetooth, a more stable and responsive display, improved domestic roaming, saving from the messages inbox, and the usual "other" software improvements. The company also reminds subscribers that it's unable to push the update manually, so you'll just have to wait your turn. But in the meantime, you can get all those awesome cookie decorations ready. Huzzah!

Here's some of the other stuff that happened in the wide world of wireless for the week of July 11, 2011: Samsung launched an ad campaign for the Infuse 4G which claims its colors are "so good, they fool Mother Nature." Each ad features a different animal that mistakes the Infuse's Super AMOLED Plus screen for real nature. [via Gottabemobile] T-Mobile's MyTouch 4G is now available on Cincinnati Bell as the HTC Panache 4G for $200 with two-year agreement. [via MobileBurn] We got a sneak peek at some of Symbian Belle's UI changes, thanks to the refreshed Design Guideline docs on Nokia's developer website. [via All About Symbian] Inductive charging battery covers are now available for the HTC Thunderbolt and Incredible 2, Motorola Droid 3, and the LG Revolution. [via Droid-Life] Motorola officially announced the Fire, aka XT316. It's a portrait QWERTY handset with Gingerbread and is currently available in China. In the coming months it should work its way to Taiwan, Latin America, and Europe. The XT316 is going for $230. [via Unwired View] The popular GroupMe messaging app is now available for Windows Phone and can be downloaded for free in the Marketplace. Hulu Plus Android app is now playing on Evo 4G, Thunderbolt, myTouch 4G and G2
Last month Hulu Plus finally arrived on Android however support was unfortunately limited to just six devices, but tonight the official blog has announced the count has reached double digits. Four HTC phones are on the list -- the Evo 4G, Thunderbolt, myTouch 4G and G2 -- bringing the total to ten models supported, featuring a mix of first and second gen Snapdragon chips clocked at varying speeds. Given shared architecture with some phones already on the list it's not clear why these had to wait, but Senior Product Manager Lonn Lee is quick to point out that the streaming video site isn't done yet. Even as it's on the auction block, there's at least some chance to pick up disgruntled Netflix subscribers and adding a few underserved handsets is as good a way as any to reach out.
T-Mobile announces myTouch 4G Slide, aims to take smartphone photography to new heights
Well, we'd seen plenty of pictures of T-Mobile's new myTouch 4G Slide over the past couple of weeks, and now it's official. T-Mo officially pulled the wraps off its newest handset, and it's packing a 1.2 GHz dual-core Snapdragon processor and a 3.7-inch WVGA Super LCD screen. As for software, the slick slider comes with some tasty Gingerbread slathered in Sense 3.0. There's also an 8-megapixel shooter that does low-light photos with a wide-aperture lens capable of f2.2 -- just like that new Nokia N9 that has us all hot and bothered. The camera also has burst mode for snapping rapid fire photos, takes HDR pictures, and does 1080p videos, too. It's slated for a July release, so we won't have to wait much longer until we can indulge our inner Ansel Adams. Such fantastic smartphone photography is all yours for $199.99 on a two year contract, and there's a video of the phone and a smattering of other details in the PR after the break.
T-Mobile myTouch 4G Slide spotted in the clear, sans case
We've already seen it turn up in a few blurry shots, and seen it pictured a bit more clearly inside a case, but we now finally have our first good, unobstructed look at T-Mobile's still unannounced myTouch 4G Slide. What's more, the tipster that provided the shots to TmoNews also offered up a few quick impressions, saying that the keyboard was "amazing" and roughly comparable to the T-Mobile G2, and that the phone itself is "surprisingly fast" but a bit heavier than the G2. T-Mobile G2 not long for this world, per leaked document
We'd like to think that good phones -- like soldiers -- don't die, they just fade away, solemn and proud, with a faint tear rolling down the cameraside cheek. This appears to be the case for T-Mobile's G2, which seems content to quietly disappear as younger and fresher handsets are prepped to take its place in the near future. It's no longer anywhere to be found on the carrier's site, and a leaked document (shown above) has surfaced that mentions the phone's inevitable demise. If the G2 is truly nearing EOL status, we suspect T-Mobile is ditching it to make room for newer QWERTY Android phones like the MyTouch 4G Slide. Regardless, if you have any inkling to get the G2 before it completes the path to obscurity, now would be an ideal time to lace up the running shoes.
HTC Doubleshot slides through the FCC
Rumor has it that the HTC Doubleshot, aka the MyTouch 4G Slide, will be popping up in T-Mo shops across the country on July 6th. But, before consumers can turn in that paper they've been stackin' for one, the handset has to make it by The Man. Well, the FCC just cleared an HTC phone with a QWERTY keypad and a 1700MHz radio inside, and there's a good chance it just so happens to be that Sensed-up, dual-core Gingerbread slider we've been waiting for. Sadly, regulators don't have any teardown pics for you to ogle but, hey, we've got an FCC tag -- that's gotta count for something... right?
Android 2.3.3 leaks for G2x and myTouch 4G, gives us a taste of T-Mobile's Gingerbread future (video)
When LG's mighty G2x shipped with Froyo, it seemed like a paradoxical pairing to say the least. Of course, this news was softened by T-Mobile's announcement that its flagship phone would soon be transported to the land of Gingerbread, and we're now given a spicy preview. While this is by no means a final build, our friends at This is My Next have received LG's development copy of Android 2.3.3, and like you'd expect from any self-respecting techie, it's been installed and taken for a spin. In particular, scrolling and touch sensitivity were found to be significantly improved, with swipes to the screen responding as intended. In addition, the G2x scored better in the Quadrant test with the new OS version, jumping up more than 200 points. Whatever developers have sprinkled into this recipe sure is tasty. If there's a T-Mobile myTouch 4G in your pocket, grab a fork and sit down for a Gingerbread sampling. Even though it's not quite fully baked, the folks at 911Sniper have released a development version which hints at what's to come. Most notably, users will appreciate a new Quick Settings tab that's accessible from the pull-down notification area, providing an easy way to control which of the phone's radios are active. While many report getting along just fine with this build, others are experiencing problems with WiFi and overall stability. HTC Doubleshot outed as T-Mobile's MyTouch 4G Slide?
When 911Sniper posted the ROM for HTC's Doubleshot, Android enthusiasts began digging for signs of the speculated product name. In the process, a whole slew of specs were outed, and yes, it appears we're looking at none other than T-Mobile's MyTouch 4G Slide. In addition to the dual-core 1.2GHz processor we already reported, the data suggest we'll see a 3.7-inch screen, an 8 megapixel camera (with a lowly VGA shooter up front), and 768MB of RAM. Interestingly, codecs for 3D support were also found in the ROM, and while there's no indication these will make their way into the final build, it sure would add a whole new meaning to "double shot". While the original 3G Slide left us mostly indifferent, what we see here has the potential to be a winner for T-Mobile. Let's just hope they leave the user interface in HTC's capable hands this time around.
HTC Doubleshot appears in XML file, brings dual-core QWERTY handset to your future
When this curious bit of XML crossed our news desk today, we were immediately intrigued by the coyly-named HTC Doubleshot -- an 800 x 480 device that packs Gingerbread into a QWERTY slider. After further digging, it looks like the handset gets its distinction from a dual-core 1.2GHz Qualcomm MSM8260, which immediately elevates it into the realm of superphone. Given the resolution and form factor, look for a screen size of 3.6 to 4 inches. While others have hastily speculated the inclusion of a 6+ megapixel camera, we've noted the widescreen aspect ratio, and suspect we'll see the same 8 megapixel shooter on this device that's found in some of HTC's other phones. Basically, think of it as a sliding Sensation, but with a lower resolution screen. We've taken note of the coffee allusion, and suspect the Doubleshot involves more than one quietly brilliant company from the Seattle area (think magenta). If we're right about the T-Mobile connection, look for an HSPA+ handset that could potentially take life as the MyTouch 4G Slide. Care to join us in the speculation?
T-Mobile bumps myTouch 4G, G2 prices to $250
It started as a leak on TmoNews earlier today, and T-Mobile's now made it official -- the carrier is bumping the prices of both the T-Mobile G2 and MyTouch 4G from $200 to $250 on a two-year contract (with no mail-in rebate). That, of course, follows the T-Mobile's little "mistake" last week with its pricing for the Samsung Galaxy S 4G, which was first listed at $150 before being changed to $200 a few days later. A number of other more inexpensive phones have also seen some minor prices changes -- hit up the link below for the complete rundown on those.
AT&T and Verizon are the same bag of 3G hurt for iPhone owners, says T-Mobile (video)
Want some help with your newfound choice of iPhone carrier? Let T-Mobile break it down for you in an entirely unbiased and dispassionate fashion. The pink carrier's latest hit piece commercial highlights the fact that, whether on Verizon or AT&T, the iPhone only has recourse to 3G connectivity, painting the two carriers as a pair of grey suits distinguishable only by the color of their ties. It's a cute way to promote your own 4G network, sure, but it conveniently disregards the fact that Verizon's enriching its LTE (Lightning! Thunder! Electric!) network with some true superphones while AT&T is similarly committed to a 2011 LTE rollout. So, really, the only thing under critique here is Apple's rapidly aging 3G wonder. Radio Shack selling $99 EVO 4Gs with a trade-in, $80 myTouch 4Gs (update)
Hey, EVO admirer: got a crappy phone you wouldn't mind seeing disappear? You might want to consider bringing it down to Radio Shack, where a new promo running through Christmas will net you a shiny new EVO 4G for $99 on contract if you bring in "any working handset," which should presumably include that dirt-encrusted StarTAC that's stuck in that no-man's land between "usable" and "collectible." From an article over on TmoNews, looks like they're also hawking you're choice of a myTouch 4G or G2 or $79.99 on contract if T-Mobile's more to your liking than Sprint (or if you don't have WiMAX coverage in your neck of the woods). Even better, any new activation will apparently get you a free Bluetooth headset, so you'll walk out of the store with a shiny new smartphone and a reason to keep it off your greasy face. Score! Update: Did we say you needed a trade-in? You may be able to keep that StarTAC in the display case if you buy online, as we're seeing the same magical $99 price for an EVO 4G at Radio Shack's website. Yahoo! Messenger and ooVoo Mobile do video chat on Android, but only for a lucky few
Two video chats enter the ring, only one comes out. In this corner it's ooVoo Mobile, a portable version of the (somewhat) popular desktop video chat application that will let up to six users simultaneously swap bitrate over 3G, 4G, or WiFi -- but only if you have an HTC Evo or Samsung Epic. In the other corner it's Yahoo! Messenger, with version 1.3 adding video calls and similarly limited device support, though this time it's the myTouch 4G and the Evo getting the nod. So, Android owners, which of these is going to reign supreme? Or, are you going to tap out and stay cozy with Qik? Hit the Android Market now and place your bets. Update: We're told that Paltalk has also recently released an Android app to the Marketplace, giving you yet another way to say "hey."
T-Mobile ships Bluetooth Swivel Dock for myTouch 4G
Looking (and sounding) a bit like a more-advanced version of the Bluetooth dock that accompanied the Nexus One, it seems that T-Mobile has started shipping a so-called Bluetooth Swivel Dock for its recently-launched myTouch 4G -- and, well, you can get a pretty good idea of exactly what it is from the name. Indeed: not only does this bad boy charge your phone, it routes Bluetooth audio to a 3.5mm jack that you can leave connected to that bookshelf system of yours. Oh, and it swivels, which frees you of the arduous task of knocking the dock on its side should you wish to view some landscape material. TmoNews says this is starting to filters into stores for $49.99, so you should be able to try your luck at your local corporate-owned shop right now if you're interested.
