  • Officers' Quarters: Are you Napoleon?

    by

Every Monday, Scott Andrews contributes Officers' Quarters, a column about the ins and outs of guild leadership. He is the author of The Guild Leader's Handbook. Napoleon once said, "I can no longer obey; I have tasted command, and I cannot give it up." It's not a reassuring sentiment, but I respect the guy for being honest about it. The launch of Mists approaches in just a few short weeks. Many guilds are in a holding pattern right now, waiting for new content, new raids, new battlegrounds, and new achievements. It's the calm before the storm, and in that calm I would like every officer reading this to ask themselves, honestly, whether or not they should still be an officer when the expansion goes live. Would Illidan fire you? Think about your role in the guild from a business management perspective. Imagine you had a WoW boss. For no specific reason, I like to imagine Illidan as my WoW boss: wearing a suit, reading glasses delicately perched over his blindfold, reviewing Black Temple budget reports. If Illidan were paying you to be an officer, would he be satisfied with your contributions? Are you doing enough to earn a paycheck? If Illidan had reports of all the work that you've done on the guild's behalf lately, would he give you a raise, or would he fire you?

  • Daily iPad App: Tiny Places HD

Tiny Places is the latest title from Big Fish Games, which typically releases games on PC (mostly casual stuff like find-an-item and puzzle games), but lately has been making a big push on iOS as well. What's interesting about Tiny Places is that it borrows from from iOS games rather than Big Fish's PC catalog. Specifically, from Cut the Rope. Tiny Places is similar to Chillingo's other physics title (the one that's not about angry birds), in that it features a cute little protagonist trying to reach a goal in a colorful 2D level while using real-time physics to move around. In this case, you play as a chameleon who uses his tongue to hang from various objects, trying to collect "starflies" while moving towards a hole in the wall that kicks off the next level. To start, you can fling the little chameleon around, but as the game progresses, there are other objects to interact with. Tiny Places is harder than Cut the Rope as precise, airborne is required. Especially if you want to get all of the stars and extras, you'll need to make some pretty tough jumps. But resetting the level is quick and easy, so the game encourages replaying to get things just right. The polish isn't quite as good as Cut the Rope, but if (like me) you've already run through all of the levels of that one, Tiny Places offers a worthy alternative and a fun time in and of itself. The iPad version is US$1.99 while the iPhone version is just a buck, and there are free versions of each to try out as well. Tiny Places isn't a classic, but if you enjoy physics games, the many levels on display here (with lots of updates to come, according to the app itself) will provide plenty of entertainment.

  • Motorola Napoleon lives, still on track for a Verizon release?

The Q11's more or less a complete bust, so the Q fans of the world deserve something -- anything -- to hold their interest and reward their loyalty, don't they? We first saw the so-called "Napoleon" for Verizon eons ago, and by now, we'd pretty much assumed it'd been canned somewhere along the way -- but phoneArena has new shots of the thing in the wild that gives us hope that it might yet be released. Considering that it's a GSM / CDMA dual-mode set, it should garner particularly intense interest since Verizon's range of world-compatible phones is limited by nature, and truth be told, the thing doesn't look half bad. We could do without the biometric sensor -- and Windows Mobile 6.1 has us pretty bummed out at this point with 6.5 around the corner -- but it'll see a few sales if they can get it out the door soon. Sadly, it's still anybody's guess when that may be.

  • Nintendo planning a game about Napoleon?

Nintendo of Japan recently registered one of its more intriguing trademarks: the right to use the name "Napoleon" in a game. What on earth could Nintendo want with one of the most renowned French military leaders in history [insert French military joke here]? Are we about to receive Napoleon Bonaparte's Military Training? Super Napoleon Kart? Guess what: it's probably neither of these.Siliconera's Spencer, who also found the trademark, predicts that Nintendo could be preparing a title based on a popular card game in Japan, also called Napoleon. A second, more tantalizing possibility: this is a remake of/sequel to the GBA strategy title of the same name. That was developed by Genki, but was published by Nintendo in Japan and France. Nintendo isn't adverse to publishing the odd strategy title, and we hear those turned out okay!

  • Civilization Revolution comes with a mini-poster surprise

What's better than a pin-up of Izuna? Well, a pin-up of Napoleon, for starters. Bow chicka wow wow. In all seriousness, we do like this Civilzation Revolution DS poster better (although this blogger isn't exactly in hormone-crazy young male demographic that the Izuna pieces are meant to appeal to). Hormones aside, though, Napoleon is looking pretty badass here, and we're confident he could even conquer the Ziggy Pig looking like he does. So, how do you get one? As with Izuna, this mini-poster comes as reversible cover art, so all you have to do is buy the game. We're starting to get spoiled here, though, and soon we're going to demand that every DS title comes with such an awesome feature.[Thanks to ChristianBK for the tip and picture!]

  • Motorola's worldly Q9: "Napoleon" breaks cover for Verizon

It looks like Motorola and Verizon are getting ready to take a third crack at the Q9 form factor, following up the Q9m and Q9c -- and this time around, there's a little something extra in store. On top of the EV-DO Rev. A radio, the so-called "Napoleon" (codename, of course) features GSM, because -- surprise, surprise -- businesspeople who use Windows Mobile devices tend to do just a bit of traveling. It looks like Moto has taken this opportunity to give the Q9 meme a little nip-tuck job, too, with a rounded body and a tastefully-applied ring of chrome around the top edge. They've even tossed in a fingerprint scanner for good measure, a tip o' the hat to the suits who'll undoubtedly populate the upper 90 percent of this sucker's client base. No word on a release date or price, but can we cautiously submit a thumbs-up for the design direction here?
