Do you remember that crazy Super Mario Bros. 3 fan remake we posted about late last year? Well, creator SKJmin has finished a sizeable update to his ambitious remake, one you'll be able to download on June 16. If you plan on doing so, we'd suggest making sure you actually own New Super Mario Bros. DS -- you know, for legal reasons. The update adds enhanced graphics to each level, including new block sets and backgrounds, plus 84 bonus rooms, a new final castle and over 30 different cameos. For now, we must be content with 14 minutes of footage, which we've gone and tucked just past the break.

  • DS Lite drops to $99 on June 5

The 3DS just got more competition. Not from Sony or another competitor, but from another, now impulse-buy-priced, DS. Nintendo just announced that the DS Lite has been officially dropped in price from $129.99 to $99.99, effective June 5. Perhaps the old SKU at the old price was what GameStop was clearing out? The same month, six Mario games (New Super Mario Bros., Mario Kart DS, Super Mario 64 DS, Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story, Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Mini-Land Mayhem!, and Mario Party DS) will be re-released in red boxes, to " make it easy for [consumers] to find their favorite Mario titles." Not that anyone ever had trouble finding any of these -- Nintendo announced that more than 9.25 million copies of New Super Mario Bros. have been sold in the US. No price drop was announced for the games. Just fancy new boxes.

  • New Super Mario Bros is first six million seller on DS

Our friends in Japan often have ... peculiar tastes when it comes to their gaming passions. Specifically, they are taught from a young age to despise any game in which they don't capture monsters. Fact: The nation's most popular T-shirt actually reads, "I'd rather capture a monster than my next breath of oxygen." It's true! It's an even more impressive accomplishment, then, that the country's first game to sell six million copies on DS doesn't feature any monster capturing to speak of. No, it's New Super Mario Bros., which hit 6,015,255 units as of December 26 according to the latest Enterbrain data. Congrats, Mario. Now, if science ever figures out a way to put monster catching into one of your games ... well, let's just pray it never comes to that.

If you're anything like us, you've got a serious affinity for the third Super Mario Bros. NES game. However, there's no way you have the same amount of love that GBATemp.net forum user SKJmin does for the decades old game. SKJmin tirelessly remade Super Mario Bros. 3 in the New Super Mario Bros. (DS) engine. Just yesterday, the final, totally bonkers trailer for the patch went up, which we've dropped after the break. As both properties are wholly owned by Nintendo, the mod is offered for free and the creator doesn't pack the NSMB ROM with the download. Additionally, repeated warnings are given to would-be thieves, such as "Please remember, don't download this if you don't have the original game from Nintendo! You have been warned!!" As of right now, the patch isn't available, but is said to be coming at some point tomorrow, just in time to make your weekend way, way more awesome.

  • April Fools: Nintendo games coming to iPad June 15

Nintendo has recognized how big this App Store thing has become, and, as such, has decided to just play nice and offer its games to iPad users starting June 15. PlaySwitch broke the news earlier today and, as you can see above, the games barely skip a beat in the graphics department from Wii to iPad -- DS games will also be made available. What? Oh, it's April Fools, so you think this is all a joke? Look, we understand your skepticism, but guys, this can't be a lie. It's too good to not be true, right? RIGHT?!

  • DS sells over 30 million in Japan

The same day it chose to announce the 3DS, Nintendo officially hit a ridiculous milestone for the existing DS platform(s) in Japan: 30 million units sold. Enterbrain estimates that, through March 21, the handheld has sold 30,030,434 units. The last reported worldwide total, in January, was around 125 million. Unsurprisingly, the best-selling game is New Super Mario Bros., with 5,767,262 copies sold. 30 million is indeed a record for the best-selling console ever in Japan; however, every time anyone in Japan buys a DS, it's a new record, because the DS became Japan's best-selling console as soon as it passed the PS2 at around the 21 million mark. There are people in line at electronics stores now, each of whom is about to bring the DS to a record sales total. [Via IGN]

  • Nintendo celebrates DS, Wii, software sales milestones in Europe, U.S.

Across two of Nintendo's biggest markets, the US and Europe, the house that Mario built has managed to get a lot of its hardware and software into customers' hands, reporting huge sales milestones and a very prosperous December. In Europe, the DS is now the best-selling video game console of all time, surpassing the 40 million mark in the region. The Wii now tops 20 million, becoming the fastest-selling console in the region since its release three years ago. There's also some data on Nintendo's games to chew on, including Wii Sports Resort, which sold five million since releasing in July, and New Super Mario Bros. Wii, which just reached 2.5 million units sold. As for the States, Nintendo's been raking in equally impressive amounts of cash here. In December, three million Wii consoles were purchased and the DS set "a new all-time calendar-year U.S. sales record for any console or hand-held system." You know, just like the company did last year. Also, New Super Mario Bros. Wii had quite the stellar showing in the U.S., achieving lifetime sales of four million units in the region. In short: Nintendo is pretty much the same as always. Source - Nintendo UK press release Source - Nintendo of America press release

It seems as though every day there's more mainstream saturation for Nintendo products. Why just the other day, we spotted Drew Carey offering a decently tasty Nintendo DSi bundle during the "Showcase Showdown" portion of his (well, not really his) gameshow, The Price is Right -- should the contestants guess the right price, of course. Though titles like Lord of the Rings: Conquest and, unsurprisingly, The Price is Right game were among those offered, DS staples like New Super Mario Bros. and Ninja Gaiden Dragon Sword also made their way into the fray. We know, we know, the question on all your minds is of course: Did the contestant win? You'll have to see yourself over at the CBS website, folks! [Via GoNintendo]

  • Nintendo adding Mario Red, Ice Blue DS bundles this week

In what has become a holiday tradition as beloved and predictable as your Uncle Jack tipping a few (or 17) back and daring you to punch him in the stomach, Nintendo is releasing two new DS bundles just in time for the shopping season. Beginning on Black Friday, you can look for a red DS emblazoned with Mario's trademark "M" and packaged with New Super Mario Bros., as well as an Ice Blue model that's packing Brain Age and a custom carrying case. Well, you can look for the $149.99 bundles beginning on Black Friday, but don't be surprised if it's mid-February by the time a soccer mom decides against cutting your brake lines for buying one out from under her.

  • Send a tiny DS wishlist in Mario's voice

    by

    11.24.2008

Nintendo has offered two resources for compiling and sharing your Nintendo DS holiday wishlists. The first allows you to select a DS color and up to three games, along with a few other details, and send the list to someone's phone or email as a voice message from Mario. The second allows you to compile a wishlist and send it as an E-card. Both suffer from the same problem: the list of games is extremely limited, comprising Nintendo's big hits, new releases, and a few E-rated third-party titles. Some of the games, like New Super Mario Bros., are way old. These "gift guides" actually make the DS look worse than the super-awesome system it is. We understand the E rating restriction, but why limit the selection to 25 games? And why include Disney's Bolt in that selection? The one salvation of either of these services would be the hilarious and adorable Mario voice messages (they are very cute and enjoyable), but Mario can't say "JC." How could Nintendo forget to record this crucial word?

  • New DS Lites add color to Black Friday

In 2007, Sears offered ravenous Black Friday shoppers a pink Nintendogs Lite and an eye-catching gold Phantom Hourglass console. This year, to help you forget the fact that you're not rich enough to import a DSi, two further hardware bundles will be made available: an Ice Blue Lite with Brain Age and a case that looks like a Filofax, and a Mario Red model with an "M" stamped on it that ships with New Super Mario Bros., both priced at $149.99. It prints money, etc. If you take away that "M," these are basically two of Nintendo's newest European Lites. We admit to harboring mixed feelings about the "M." Would anyone else just prefer the plain red Lite? %Gallery-26441% [Via Kotaku]

We all love Nintendo. And they've shown a ton of support for their handheld system, offering up great Nintendo titles for us to play. Whether it's New Super Mario Bros. or The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass, or even Elite Beat Agents, they've provided us with hours of entertainment. Given that, which is your favorite Nintendo game on the platform? Do you absolutely love Electroplankton (we do)? Is Animal Crossing your favorite? Out with it!

Hey, guess what? You can buy Super Smash Bros. Brawl on Amazon today (and today only) for $25.99! What a minute -- why are we posting about a Brawl deal on DS Fanboy, of all places? Because, friends, that's just the tip of the iceberg. Amazon is offering up nine Nintendo deals today, which (if our guesses are correct) includes five DS games. Since all of the said games are published by Nintendo you might own most of them already, but if not, they're games that are definitely worth getting for cheap. So, all you stingy folks that are able to order from Amazon.com should check past the break to see what Gold Box sales are in store for you today.

Not all of us are blessed with the talents needed to bake an edible cake, much less a video game cake with an identifiable shape. More often than not, the desserts we've pulled from the oven look like something you'd shoot and put out of its misery. As you turn your head and watered eyes to the side, pulling back the hammer on your heavy, shaking pistol, you sometimes catch the cakes looking up at to you, wishing they had more time to spend with you. For those of you left in depressed states after having to euthanize so many cakes, there might still be hope for you, an opportunity to make things right. Flickr user Neko Joe spotted this pre-made Nintendo DS and New Super Mario Bros. layered sponge cake at Sainsbury's, a UK supermarket chain. It comes with a janky cardboard top screen, but you can add your own custom message: "It's-a-me, Mario Cake!" or "Sorry we didn't buy you a real DS!" or "You're adopted!" We don't suggest you bring this sponge cake to any birthday parties, however ... Watch the NSFW video past the break to find out why! %Gallery-25835%

  • Another exhaustive list of Japan's best-sellers of 2007

Remember that haaauuuuge list of Japan's 500 highest-selling games of 2007? Well, sorry, but you'll have to forget them all. Yep, every last one of 'em. That's because we now have a new list which is also claiming to feature the 500 best-selling games of 2007 in Japan. This one has been compiled by Enterbrain (the original was from rival data-gatherers Media Create), and it's ever so slightly different. The good news is that, despite the origins of each list being different, the overriding message is still the same, and that message is: DS rules all yaaay. Both lists agree that Wii Sports was top dog, but the top DS games have been jumbled about. Now, for example, it is the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon Explorers games that are top of the DS pile, while Mario Party DS drops to second. The changes are subtle, but definitely exist. Hit the break to see the top ten DS games!

Well, okay, you can do that by just playing Donkey Kong, but there's also another way. You can take these Nintendo wall decals from Blik and create a Donkey Kong, Super Mario Bros. or New Super Mario Bros. mural right on your wall. We won't tell you how we're getting some for our office, as you should have already figured that out by now. What's really cool about these, though, is that the user has some level of creativity. It's not just one standard piece you slap on the wall. It comes in many pieces, meaning you can create a design all your own. Want it to look like an exact level from the game? Want it to be completely unrealistic? It's all up to you. Of course, there is a catch. Each set costs $75, which means you'll need to spend a bunch of Mario's coins if you expect to send your walls back to the 8-bit era. [Via Game Set Watch]

With Nintendo dominating both the console and handheld markets, their key franchises have installments on both platforms. Focusing on the DS, which key franchise do you believe has the best entry? Phantom Hourglass? It would probably be New Super Mario Bros., for us. That game is pure Mario Bros. fun. But, what do you all think? Of all the entries in Nintendo franchises on the DS, which one is your favorite? Pokémon Diamond & Pearl? Let's hear it!
