  • Scattered Shots: New Year's Resolutions for Hunters and for Blizzard

Welcome to Scattered Shots! This week, your author has managed to take a break from lamenting that the stores about to stop selling eggnog to make a few Hunter-specific resolutions. The New Year is considered by many people to be the time for a fresh start, a time to wipe the slate clean of past missteps, or just to make some changes to your life to make it even better. In that spirit, I'd like to propose some Hunter-related resolutions for both Blizzard and for Hunters in the spirit of promoting peace, harmony, and understanding in the new year for all Survivalists, Marksmen, and Beastmasters.

  • Happy New Years video from Champions Online

Many of the Massively crew have been hoping for more Champions Online updates, waiting with bated breath. Of course, Cryptic loves to tease us with little tidbits of information - and this video is certainly no exception. Starting out with a news reporter on the scene, the video gives us a quick peek at Monster Island and Force Station Steelhead, then winds up in Millennium City (Champions Online's eventual Atlas Park?) where a countdown to midnight is captured and celebrated. While it's certainly not the most in-depth piece we've seen, it does give some tantalizing flyover views for those hungry for more. For those curious, you can check out the low-res version behind the cut, or download the higher-res version from the Champions Online site. In either case, Happy New Year, future heroes!

Happy New Year, everyone! It's 2009, and this marks our first post of the year! I specifically locked everyone else out of the WoW Insider HQ so I would have the honor of writing it. Not before I asked them an important question, though. What were their New Year's resolutions for 2009? No, no, not those boring resolutions like "don't drink soda" or "watch less TV" or "stop eating babies." Nobody cares about that stuff. I mean their WoW resolutions! My resolution? Get better at PvP. I'm shooting high and want an arena title. I've never really been into PvP, whether it be battlegrounds or arenas, but it's really the one area of play I haven't had much success in. So I'm gonna give it my all, and I'm not going to do things halfway. I'll settle for nothing less than Gladiator. Okay, okay, I'll accept Duelist, but that's as low as this fella goes. As for the rest of our team...

Another twelve months have gone by, the earth has revolved around the sun once more, and a brand new year stretches out before us. And while the rest of the world may be thinking up new year's resolutions of a more practical nature, this is Massively and you can't expect a conversation with us not to involve MMOs. So what are your MMO resolutions for 2009? Planning on playing less? Playing more? Diversifying your MMO portfolio? Leveling an alt of each class? For our part, we plan on playing as much of as many games as possible -- or to the extent we can get away with telling our significant others, friends, family, and household pets that, though it may look like we're killing giant lizards, we're actually working. Have any resolutions for 2009 you'd like to share?

Some of us were too impatient to wait for the Nintendo DSi, forking over good money to import the sexy handheld. But, with 2009 fast approaching, we're going to see a lot of great DSi content hit the market. And, for those of us in North America, we're actually going to see the DSi itself hit the market. We're sure it'll sell truckloads, there's no disputing that. There's also no disputing that 2009 will be the year of the Nintendo DSi. Agree? What are you looking forward to? Can't wait to pick one up?%Gallery-33263%

As we say goodbye to 2008 and welcome a new year, the popular thing to do is make resolutions. We're pretty sure the large majority of folks making resolutions usually give up eventually, but some people follow through with it. Are you making any? Could they be gaming related? Your resolutions, show us them!

This year's joyous non-denominational festive season (to borrow a phrase from our own Tateru) has come to a close -- and there's probably more than one unfortunate reader out there who has trudged into the office today. (To those readers, we offer our greatest sympathies. At least the greatest sympathies we're capable of offering while grinding the rest of the way to level 80.) But as 2008 winds down towards the new year, we have a question to pose you, whether you find yourself at home, at work, or anywhere in between: with this year mostly behind us, what are you looking forward to in the future? We have an array of exciting games on the horizon: SWTOR, DCUO, and STO just to name a few of the easily acronymized options. Are you looking forward to any juicy new releases in the next year or is your new year's wish something that's not on our radar?

  • Gamers on the Street: This year, I resolve ...

Gamers on the Street logs into U.S. servers to get the word from the front on what's going on in and around the World of Warcraft. With Wrath of the Lich King already blipping away on many guilds' radars, a lot of players are plotting their way through existing content (or figuring out how to get into it in the first place and then pick their way through what they feasibly can) before the new content hits. Back in town on a peaceful early morning, you'll find players with a broad view of the things they want to accomplish in the weeks and months ahead – New Year's resolutions for a very Warcraft year. Gamers on the Street popped into Ironforge on the Warsong server early one frosty, cold morning this week to see what the early birds were planning for 2008. Their ideas, after the break.

A guildmate drew my attention to this interesting video of the New Year celebrations outside of Ironforge on the US Proudmoore server. Apparently, a GM appeared as a fire-spewing gnome and had some fun with the players gathered to see the fireworks. Check out the video above to get a complete look at his antics.

Veronica Belmont recently thought of some New Year's resolutions she felt would be firmly within reach. (If you remember, she was the lovely lady who interviewed Leeroy Jenkins at Blizzcon). Number 2 on her list was to reach level 70 in WoW. Have you made any New Year's resolutions related to WoW? Or are resolutions a "strictly real-life" sort of thing to you?

Dan O'Halloran, Turpster, and I all sat down for the 18th episode of the WoW Insider Show (and we got circular for the end of the year, since we had the same cast on the very first show), and it is now available for listening over on WoW Radio's website. We chatted about: Marcie's new raid healing column, and our new hardcore raiding content The big Ron Paul rally scheduled for tomorrow afternoon If summoning stones need neutral guards (they do not) and how mining will get easier We also talked about our suggested battle cries for the Alliance (my favorite is still "Grab Your Sword and Fight the Horde," and finally someone made a Tshirt for me-- thanks, Arek!-- but we found a lot of support for "You No Take Candle!" so I guess it's up to the Alliance what they like best). And we shared our New Year's resolutions for 2008-- Turpster's resolution is 1680x1050 (funny guy), Dan resolved to try some PvP, I resolved to play my good old Night Elf Hunter more, and see if I can't have a look at some high level content from the Alliance side.Definitely check out the show if you're bored while off work tomorrow, and don't forget-- we do this show live on WoW Radio every Saturday afternoon, so be sure to listen in again this coming Saturday at 3:30pm EST.

  • Texting delays a given on New Years, celebrate accordingly

    by

It probably doesn't come as much of a shock to you that plenty of texting goes down midnight-ish tonight, and naturally the carriers are gearing up for just such an onslaught. Palm isn't so optimistic about the proceedings: according to a study it commissioned in the UK with lpsos MORI, 70% of people who send messages at midnight experience a delay in delivery, with places like London experience 77% delays, and 23% of Britons waiting over six hours for their text messages to arrive. Palm suggests an IM or email might be in order, and smartphone users will have better luck getting their messages delivered over the comparably unclogged data networks. Verizon seems more excited about the prospect, expecting the 284 million text messages sent last year on its network between 12pm New Years Eve and 4am New Years Day to rise to 300 million. Telstra expects to process more than 53 million messages across Australia, and will have a "small army" of techs on hand to monitor network performance. Canadians are expected to send 50 million texts this year, according to Virgin Mobile Canada, with the average canadian sending two text messages each -- double that of last year. However and wherever you party, stay safe out there -- friends don't let friends drink and text their estranged exes.Read - Palm study warns of delays Read - Verizon predicts 300 millionRead - Canada doubles in textsRead - Telstra's small army in Australia

Still high on the success of Songs for Dogs, Barenger and Mirabell have created a New Years greeting for their guild, Dirt Dog! This time, they reminisce about dungeons that no one runs anymore. "For Old Alt's Sake" is an entertaining take on "Auld Lang Syne," a New Years Eve tradition. These guys are quite talented and have an amazing rapport. It doesn't look scripted at all. Hopefully they'll enter WoW Idol 2008. Happy New Years, WoW Insiders![Thanks, Infamy!]Previously on Moviewatch...Read on to see the lyrics ...

Each week, Robin Torres writes WoW, Casually for the player who has 2 hours or less to play at a time.I hope everyone's holidays have been relatively drama-free and that you are enjoying some downtime before the new year.Speaking of New Year's, along with the continuation of the Feast of Winter Veil, Blizzard is hosting New Year's festivities on December 31st and January 1st. There will be fireworks, booze and revelers to blow kisses at right along side the remains of the Winter Veil activities.Have you picked up your presents yet? The trees in Ironforge and Orgrimmar have gifts with exclamation points over them for you to take and open. They range from meh to awesome and some are even BOU for your reselling profits if you aren't into keeping the fun stuff. I was hoping to find a Dragon Kite, but that was before I discovered that it is from the TCG and not something from Greatfather Winter. Dragons are cool.

  • What's your CoX toon's New Year's Resolution?

Ex Libris, the official forums Community Coordinator for City of Heroes & Villains, wants to know what players have planned for their favorite toons in the New Year. What heroic feats will you attempt? Maybe trying to run all the Task Forces in record time? And what villainous deeds will you try and pull off? Perhaps trying to rob every bank in Paragon City - consecutively - is right up your alley. But if you're anything like me (and if you are I'm so very sorry), you have as many alts as there are players in WoW. OK, maybe not that many... but you (and I) have a serious problem. Which toon do we actually dedicate playing for long enough to actually carry out those resoultions? Ya, I know! There could be worse problems to address. Whatever the case, the folks at NCsoft want to know. So whether you're a spandex clad do gooder or evil doer, check out the forums and post your character name along with the nefarious plans you have for 2008.

Steve loves the PSP just as much as I do, and he'll ensure that breaking news always appears on the site, even if I become infected with the plague. Unlike our previous writer Chris, he isn't so enamored with the N-Gage, and that can only be a good thing, right?"When I'm not playing or writing about video games, I like to bore friends and family by talking about them. Someday I hope to make my own video game and I have big aspirations, just like David Jaffe. Except instead of crying, my PSP game will make them vomit."Expect his big PSP Fanboy debut later today!2. A new feature: "Ask PSP Fanboy"Confused about what your PSP can do? Need an update on a certain game or development? The PSP Fanboy team is here to help you!
