We praised its excellent image quality, generally consistent performance, overall solid design and, best of all, its $600 price tag -- including an 18-55mm kit lens. Since then, the landscape has shifted drastically for this particular type of compact shooter, with the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/05/01/olympus-om-d-em-5-micro-four-thirds-camera-review/">Olympus OM-D E-M5</a> raising the bar for focusing performance, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/03/nikon-1-j1-review-video/">Nikon's cute J1</a> winning the hearts of many (likely due to a heavy marketing budget and adorable design) and the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/04/27/fujifilm-x-pro1-mirrorless-camera-review/">Fujifilm X-Pro1</a> pushing the envelope when it comes to price and body size. For its part, Sony also attracted plenty of attention with its flagship <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/02/06/sony-nex-7-review/">NEX-7</a>, which appears to have been the inspiration for the company's brand new NEX-F3.</p><p></p><div class="follow_this_in_post"> <img alt="" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/11/more_info_header_1.gif" /><br /> <div class="ftip_links"> <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/05/17/sony-nex-f3-and-a37-hands-on-and-sample-shots/">Sony NEX-F3 hands-on and sample shots</a></div> <div class="ftip_links"> <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/07/20/sony-alpha-nex-c3-review/">Sony NEX-C3 review</a></div> <div class="ftip_links"> <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/02/06/sony-nex-7-review/">Sony NEX-7 review</a></div></div><p> Based on its price tag and release schedule, you might have assumed that the NEX-F3 is here to dethrone Sony's NEX-C3. That may or may not be the case (we're hoping for the latter) -- the F3 is much more a scaled-down version of the NEX-7 than an update to the C3. Sure, designs can change drastically from one year to the next, but we were quite fond of last year's model, and many of you were, too. From a specification perspective, the F3 has a new APS-C sensor (though resolution remains unchanged), with a higher top ISO setting of 16,000, a 3-inch LCD that can flip 180-degrees to face completely forward, a new NEX-7-esque pop-up flash and a bulkier design. But does bigger mean better in this case? Click past the break for our take.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-nex-f3-review/">Sony NEX-F3 review</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-nex-f3-review/#5054509"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/05/sonynex01eng_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-nex-f3-review/#5054510"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/05/sonynex02eng_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-nex-f3-review/#5054511"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/05/sonynex03eng_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-nex-f3-review/#5054512"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/05/sonynex04eng_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-nex-f3-review/#5054513"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/05/sonynex05eng_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div></p><p></p><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/05/31/sony-nex-f3-review/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Sony NEX-F3 review</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/05/31/sony-nex-f3-review/">Sony NEX-F3 review</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 31 May 2012 12:00:00 EST. It was just yesterday that a corner of Sony's 16.1 megapixel <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/04/27/first-image-of-sony-nex-f3-leaked-outs-16-1-mp-sensor/">NEX-F3</a> leaked onto the interwebs and now more photos have surfaced, along with a previously unannounced shooter, the Alpha A37 SLT. The pictures come courtesy of <em>Yang Canggih,</em> which says it had a chance to demo the two devices yesterday at Sony's Partner's Conference in Jakarta (curiously, the NEX-F3 post isn't live as of this writing, but <em>Sony Alpha Rumors</em> has the images up). Starting with the F3, the mirrorless camera has lost a smidgen of the curves found on its older sibling, the C3, adopting a slight bit of the angular edges that once made the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/02/06/sony-nex-7-review/">NEX-7</a> the <strike>badass</strike> standout in the lineup. You'll notice that the shutter button and grip have an uncanny <span>resemblance</span> to the 7's, not to mention that it's clearly gained a pop-up flash -- a first for the lower-end NEXs. Past that, the rumored -- and self-portrait friendly -- 180 degree tilt-screen is also present, which'll likely give the C3 an edge over its siblings when it comes to composing shots. Also worth note, some of the buttons on back have been slightly repositioned.</p><p> Moving along, those hoping for a successor to the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/08/sony-announces-nex-c3-and-alpha-a35-cameras-new-macro-lens/">A35</a> will apparently have their wish granted with the 16.1 megapixel A37. According to <em>Yang Canggih, </em>it features the articulating display from the last generation of NEX cams,<span><span> </span>Auto Portrait Framing (first introduced with the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/03/13/sony-alpha-a57-official/">A57</a>), four more effect modes than the A35 (up from 11)</span> and an ergonomic grip in the vein of the A77. Sadly, that's about all that's currently known, so hopefully we'll get an official introduction to the cameras soon. Head past the break for a shot of the A37 and then check out the links below for even more of both.</p><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/04/28/sony-alpha-a37-slt-nex-f3-ilc-cameras-leak/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Sony's Alpha A37 and NEX-F3 pose for the camera, reveal more angles, details</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/04/28/sony-alpha-a37-slt-nex-f3-ilc-cameras-leak/">Sony's Alpha A37 and NEX-F3 pose for the camera, reveal more angles, details</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Sat, 28 Apr 2012 21:03:00 EST. Try $9,000. That's the expected price of Sony's rumored NEX-FS700E, which could launch at NAB next month with a June ship date. <em>EOSHD</em> reports that the camera will pipe 4K video to a dedicated external recorder over 3G HD-SDI. It will reportedly use the same NEX E-mount as its predecessor, the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/26/sony-nex-fs100-review/">FS100</a>, and may include a trio of neutral density filters to increase versatility. We haven't been able to track down an image of the rumored cinema cam (the model in that image above looks identical to the FS100), but we wouldn't be surprised to see another detail or two leak out before the broadcast community's annual Vegas gathering kicks off in a little over two weeks. For its part, Canon is also <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/03/09/canon-teases-exclusive-screening-at-NAB/">expected to announce</a> a 4K EOS-format DSLR at NAB, as a less-expensive alternative to the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/03/canon-c300-cinema-camera-hands-on-video/">$16,000 C300</a>, while <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/03/red-makes-the-scarlet-dsmc-official-5k-stills-and-4k-video-for/">RED's Scarlet</a> already has 4K capabilities, and a $9,000 price tag.<br /><br />[Thanks, Andrew]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/03/30/sony-nex-fs700e-4k-nab/">Sony to launch NEX-FS700E 4K cinema camera for $9,000 at NAB?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 30 Mar 2012 13:36:00 EST. Have you been holding out on that <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/NEX/">NEX</a> purchase because of the currently limited E-mount lens selection? Well, Sony's got some good news for you -- there will soon be eight additional lenses to choose from (for a total of 15), with all models making it into circulation by the end of 2013. That's still no match for the hundreds of optics available for <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Canon/">Canon</a> or <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Nikon/">Nikon</a> DSLRs, but you'll at least be able to build a collection that covers (almost) all of your bases. Sony hasn't detailed any of these upcoming models, but the company's chart above lists a few categories, including a High Performance Standard Zoom in the pricey Zeiss category, along with High-magnification, Standard, Wide Angle and Mid-magnification Zooms. There will also be a trio of prime lenses, including a Large Aperture Standard lens, a Middle Telephoto and a "Snap" (pancake) optic. We're just as anxious as you to find out exactly what Sony has in mind for each of these categories, but you should at least take some comfort in knowing that the E-mount collection is far from complete.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/02/09/sony-promises-eight-more-nex-e-mount-lenses-by-the-end-of-2013/">Sony promises eight more NEX E-mount lenses by the end of 2013, doesn't elaborate</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 09 Feb 2012 00:11:00 EST. Ever since a days-long shooting session <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/09/15/sony-alpha-nex-7-hands-on-preview-video/">back in September</a>, Sony's prized mirrorless cam has eluded us -- and the rest of the world. As you may recall, the flagship Alpha ILC was hit by the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/20/thailand-flooding-forces-sony-to-postpone-alpha-nex-7-release-c/">Thailand floods</a>, resulting in delay after delay, eventually missing the holiday shopping season entirely before resurfacing <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/24/sony-alpha-nex-7-emerges-from-the-waters-ready-for-action/">late last month</a>. Another week later and our beloved Sony Alpha NEX-7 has finally arrived, ready to take on the streets of New York City. So what exactly is the NEX-7, and why does it cost as much as a mid-range DSLR? First off, the 24.3-megapixel APS-C ILC captures, well, 24.3-megapixel images, offering the highest resolution of any mirrorless model on the market. Its APS-C sensor is identical to the one found in <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/24/sony-alpha-a77-hands-on-preview-video/">Sony's A77 DSLR</a>, measuring larger than Micro Four Thirds and on par with most full-size digital SLRs.<br /><br />If having the ability to capture mural-size images ranks fairly low on your digicam wish list, you may take comfort in some of the NEX-7's other features, such as its gorgeous and durable magnesium alloy body, built-in XGA OLED electronic viewfinder, 3-inch, 921k-dot articulating LCD and unique tri-navi control interface that enables direct access to key settings adjustments, including both aperture and shutter speed in manual mode. There's also 1080/60p HD movie capture with full manual control and microphone input support, a 10 frames-per-second continuous shooting mode (with exposure and focus locked) and a BIONZ image processor that's capable of delivering low-noise images all the way through ISO 16,000. These features combine to make the NEX-7 one of the most powerful mirrorless cameras to date, but are they enough to justify the $1,200 body-only price tag? Join us past the break to find out.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-nex-7-review/">Sony NEX-7 review</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-nex-7-review/#4798074"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/02/sonynex701eng_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-nex-7-review/#4798075"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/02/sonynex702eng_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-nex-7-review/#4798076"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/02/sonynex703eng_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-nex-7-review/#4798077"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/02/sonynex704eng_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-nex-7-review/#4798078"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/02/sonynex705eng_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/02/06/sony-nex-7-review/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Sony Alpha NEX-7 mirrorless camera review</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/02/06/sony-nex-7-review/">Sony Alpha NEX-7 mirrorless camera review</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 06 Feb 2012 15:00:00 EST. Thankfully, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/tamron/">Tamron</a> today announced its latest zoom lens, the BO11 18-200MM F/3.5-6.3 DI III VC, which is made specifically for E-mount shooters. The BO11 weighs in at just over a pound and features a built-in stepping autofocus motor, along with Tamron's moving coil-equipped Vibration Compensation technology -- a must given that Sony's NEX shooters rely on their lenses for image stabilization. While there's no mention of price, the lens will be shipping to dealers starting December 15th and you'll have your choice of either black or silver. Of course, we'd be remiss not to point out the option of lens mount adapters, but if you're set on dedicated solutions you'll the full press release just past the break.<br />

	<a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/09/16/sony-alpha-nex-5n-makes-clicking-sound-when-moved-renders-captu/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/09/2011-09-16-sony5nclick.jpg" style="border-width: 0px; border-style: solid; margin: 4px;" /></a></div>
We've spent a few <strong><em>click</em></strong> days shooting <strong><em>click</em></strong> with <strong><em>click</em></strong> Sony's new <strong><em>click</em></strong> <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/24/sony-nex-5n-replaces-nex-5-adds-16-1-mp-sensor-25-600-max-iso/">NEX-5N</a> <strong><em>click</em></strong><strong><em> click </em></strong><strong><em>click</em></strong> and were very <strong><em>click</em></strong> impressed with its <strong><em>click</em></strong> still image performance <strong><em>click </em></strong><strong><em>click </em></strong>but <strong><em>click </em></strong>noticed some... Oh man, we've <em>gotta</em> hit Stop. As you can see, the camera suffers from a rather significant yet-to-be-diagnosed condition that outputs a mysterious clicking sound whenever you move it about. Since it's quite faint, this is little more than a minor nuisance when shooting stills, but when you go to playback video <strong><em>click</em></strong> it's impossible to ignore, rendering the audio component of your video virtually useless.<br />
<br />
We've been able to isolate the sound to the camera body itself, so it's completely independent of the lens and other accessories. We also happen to be testing a variety of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/09/15/sony-alpha-nex-7-hands-on-preview-video/">new Sony products </a>this week in San Diego, and had Sony reps on hand to acknowledge and confirm the issue, which seems to plague every NEX-5N that we've tried. This is still very fresh, so Sony doesn't have a fix or even a statement to issue, but because 1080/60p video is one of this camera's headline features, we're going to recommend holding off on your purchase until the company can confirm what's causing the issue. Jump past the break to hear it for yourself in our demo video.<br />
<br />
<strong>Update: </strong>To clarify our experience, we've only tested four cameras, all of which were likely manufactured at the same time. All four cameras presented the same clicking sound, but Sony is still investigating the issue, and has by no means implied yet that all NEX-5Ns are affected. We will of course share any updates as we receive them from Sony.<br />

There are some cameras that we would be willing to use in a bind, some that we wouldn't hesitate to shoot with, and a very select few that would motivate a cross-country journey, just for the chance to spend a few days behind the lens. Sony's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/24/sony-unveils-nex-7-24-3-mp-sensor-oled-viewfinder-1199-price/">Alpha NEX-7</a> falls within that incredibly unique final category -- in fact, we've done just that, flying from New York to San Diego to go hands-on with one of only a half-dozen pre-production samples to have landed on American soil. After seeing a very early NEX-7 prototype a few months ago, it didn't take much convincing to get us on a plane.<br />
<br />
Sony's 24.3 megapixel APS-C masterpiece represents a giant leap forward for the interchangeable lens market, theoretically capable of capturing images identical in quality to its much larger <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/24/sony-alpha-a77-hands-on-preview-video/">Alpha A77</a> counterpart, but in a body only slightly larger than the NEX-C3. Pair that image quality with an XGA OLED electronic viewfinder, a revamped tri-navi interface, standard hot-shoe, 1080 / 60p AVCHD video, microphone input, and a built-in flash, and you have one very worthy compact DSLR replacement. That said, the NEX-7 kit's $1,350 price tag is far more than many are willing to spend on a camera. But is that premium pricing justified? The electronics giant debuted the NEX-VG20, the followup to the admittedly snazzy <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/07/15/sony-nex-vg10-hd-camcorder-preview/">NEX-VG10</a>. The new interchangeable lens camcorder does full HD video and can capture 16 megapixel stills (including RAW support). The Handycam also rocks a three-inch LCD that can be rotated 270 degrees and a mic that supports stereo and 5.1 <span id="intelliTxt">channel surround </span>recordings. The camcorder will hit stores in November for $2,199 with an SEL18-200 F3.5-6.3 E-mount lens and $1,599 for just the body.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/24/sony-debuts-the-handycam-nex-vg20/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Sony debuts the Handycam NEX-VG20</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/24/sony-debuts-the-handycam-nex-vg20/">Sony debuts the Handycam NEX-VG20</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 24 Aug 2011 10:26:00 EST. Sony's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/NEX/">NEX</a> line of mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras (ILC) deliver quite a lot of bang for your buck, but a diminutive lens selection reduced appeal for advanced shooters. Today, the company is growing its E-mount family of lenses by three, now offering a total of seven compatible lenses. Shipping in October, the Carl Zeiss SonnarT E will take the helm as Sony's flagship optic, delivering a 24mm fixed focal length and f/1.8 aperture, with a minimum focus distance of 16 cm and a sky-high $999 price tag. Also packing a speedy f/1.8 aperture, the $300 E 50mm OSS doesn't sport Carl Zeiss branding, but it does include built-in image stabilization and a circular aperture, promising smooth defocus. Both lenses will ship in December. Hitting stores in October, a new telephoto lens, the $350 E 55-210mm compensates for its sluggish f/4.5-6.3 maximum aperture with optical image stabilization while offering 3.8x magnification. And finally, Sony's LA-EA2 A-mount adapter lets you use your full-size Alpha lenses with the NEX cameras without losing functionality, thanks to built-in Translucent Mirror Technology and a dedicated AF motor. <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/NEX3/">NEX-3</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/NEX5/">NEX-5</a>, and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/NEXC3/">NEX-C3</a> owners will need a firmware update to take advantage of the adaptor, but if you already have a collection of A-mount lenses, $400 may be a reasonable price to pay for full compatibility when it ships in November.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-nex-e-mount-lenses/">Sony NEX E-mount lenses</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-nex-e-mount-lenses/#4376785"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/08/2011-08-11-2011-08-11-dsc08026_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-nex-e-mount-lenses/#4376786"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/08/2011-08-11-2011-08-11-dsc08032_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-nex-e-mount-lenses/#4376787"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/08/2011-08-11-2011-08-11-dsc08033_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-nex-e-mount-lenses/#4376788"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/08/2011-08-11-2011-08-11-dsc08039_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-nex-e-mount-lenses/#4376789"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/08/2011-08-11-2011-08-11-dsc08051_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/24/sony-announces-three-new-nex-e-mount-lenses-la-ea2-a-mount-adap/">Sony reveals three new NEX E-mount lenses, LA-EA2 A-mount adaptor with translucent mirror</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 24 Aug 2011 01:00:00 EST. During our trip to Sony HQ <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/11/sony-nex-c3-hands-on-video/">earlier this summer</a> to check out the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/07/20/sony-alpha-nex-c3-review/">NEX-C3</a>, company reps hinted that the best was yet to come -- and held true to their word. Today's NEX-7 release breaks a handful of digicam records, becoming not only the first mirrorless camera to pack a 24.3 megapixel APS-C sensor, but the first APS-C cam of any shape and size to smash through this notable barrier -- potentially delivering unparalleled image quality for a camera of its size. Sony's new flagship mirrorless interchangeable lens camera (ILC) also features the same OLED viewfinder included with its brand-new <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/24/sony-alpha-a77-hands-on-preview-video/">Alpha A77</a>, delivering XGA (1024 x 768-pixel) resolution directly to your eye. There's also 1080 / 60p AVCHD video capture, a full-size hot shoe, and a completely redesigned "Tri-Navi" interface. We spent a few minutes with a pre-production NEX-7 earlier this month -- jump past the break for our initial impressions.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-nex-7-hands-on/">Sony Alpha NEX-7 (hands-on)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-nex-7-hands-on/#4376643"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/08/2011-08-11-2011-08-11-dsc08064_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-nex-7-hands-on/#4376645"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/08/2011-08-11-2011-08-11-dsc08065_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-nex-7-hands-on/#4376646"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/08/2011-08-11-2011-08-11-dsc08067_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-nex-7-hands-on/#4376647"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/08/2011-08-11-2011-08-11-dsc08070_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-nex-7-hands-on/#4376648"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/08/2011-08-11-2011-08-11-dsc08073_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/24/sony-unveils-nex-7-24-3-mp-sensor-oled-viewfinder-1199-price/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Sony unveils NEX-7: 24.3 MP sensor, OLED viewfinder, $1199 price tag (video)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/24/sony-unveils-nex-7-24-3-mp-sensor-oled-viewfinder-1199-price/">Sony unveils NEX-7: 24.3 MP sensor, OLED viewfinder, $1199 price tag (video)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 24 Aug 2011 01:00:00 EST. Having previously caught a glimpse of Sony's upcoming <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/07/21/sonys-a77-continues-to-tease-brings-a65-and-nex-7-along-for-th/">NEX-7</a>, it was only a matter of time before we saw the whole enchilada. Purported to carry the same 24.3 megapixel Exmor sensor rumored to be in the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/a77">A77</a>, the compact camera will also allegedly feature an OLED viewfinder and a 3-inch TruBlack LCD. Ostensibly, the 1080p / 24fps shooter also wields a magnesium alloy body, integrated flash and a new auto locking hot shoe. We have a feeling it won't be <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/13/sony-announcing-three-nex-lenses-on-august-24th/">too long</a> before this puppy becomes official, but until then feel free to leer at more specs and pics at the source link below.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/20/sonys-nex-7-exposed-again-spec-list-in-tow/">Sony's NEX-7 exposed (again), spec list in tow</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Sat, 20 Aug 2011 23:59:00 EST. <div>
	Last month we fell in love with a camera. Specifically, the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/07/20/sony-alpha-nex-c3-review/">Sony NEX-C3</a>. We were so enamored with its lilliputian body and stunning image quality that we gave it a "9," declared it nearly perfect and promptly began recommending it to everyone we know. But if there's one thing we thought needed improvement, it was the selection of lenses. Well, it looks like we had nothing to fret about -- a series of leaked shots suggest the outfit's had at least three in the works all along. According to the shots, originally posted in <em>DPReview</em>, we're looking at a 55-210mm / F4.5-6.3 zoom lens and fixed 50mm / F1.8 and 24mm / F1.8 numbers. Though the poster stopped short of revealing any pricing info, he seems confident Sony will announce them on August 24th. Now, while we typically take rumors with a grain of salt, it turns out that the tipster who posted these shots is none other than "Eddieaus," the same guy who <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/25/is-this-the-next-sony-vaio-z/">splattered</a> forums with pictures of the VAIO Z next to its external Power Media Dock -- the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/27/sony-ultra-slim-13-inch-vaio-z-laptop-revealed-in-europe-packs/">same press photos</a>, in fact, that Sony unveiled days later. So we're inclined to believe NEX loyalists are about to get a few new pieces of glass to play with. And if that rumored August 24th launch date is also on the money, you won't have to wait <em>too</em> long to find out how many pretty pennies they'll cost.</div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/13/sony-announcing-three-nex-lenses-on-august-24th/">Sony announcing three NEX lenses on August 24th?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Sat, 13 Aug 2011 18:14:00 EST. Hey Sony, you hear that? Sounds like you might have another leak on your hands. We got our <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/12/sony-alpha-a77-caught-sunbathing-on-a-beach-courtesy-of-mysteri/">fourth unofficial look</a> at Sony's Alpha A77 this morning, and now it's time for a little accessorizing. What you see above is reportedly a shot of a new lens adapter called the LA-EA2, which would apparently bring the outfit's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/24/sony-alpha-a55-and-a33-official-translucent-mirror-full-hd-vid/">translucent mirror technology</a> to its range of little NEX shooters. As you might recall, that mini-mirror brings with it continuous <em>phase-detect</em> autofocus. Of course, this is just a rumor, but it does lines up with previous reports of a forthcoming <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/07/21/sonys-a77-continues-to-tease-brings-a65-and-nex-7-along-for-th/">NEX-7</a>. You know we enjoy a leak as much as the next guy, but we like hard facts even more. So what's it going to be Sony?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/13/sony-la-ea2-lens-adapter-gets-ready-for-its-close-up-in-leaked/">Sony LA-EA2 lens adapter gets ready for its close-up in 'leaked' render</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Sat, 13 Aug 2011 10:11:00 EST. But their enormous size and weight, lofty price tags, and intimidating design have forced casual photographers to focus on compact and superzoom point-and-shoot cameras instead, often leaving those bulky, confusing monstrosities to the pros. Enter mirrorless models, which scrap an optical viewfinder in favor of shrinking both body size and price tag, have provided the rest of us with a welcome mat to the world of powerful sensors, high-speed shooting, and swappable lenses -- with relatively little sacrifice along the way.<br /><br />The 16-megapixel <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/11/sony-nex-c3-hands-on-video/">Alpha NEX-C3</a> builds upon the successes of its predecessor -- the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/10/sonys-nex3-5-cameras-priced-june-release-date-leaked/">NEX-3</a> -- sporting a slimmer body and redesigned APS-C sensor. It also adds a reported 20-percent boost in battery life, improved low light performance, and a slimmer, more attractive design. We spent well over a month using the NEX-C3 as our primary camera for product shoots, trade shows, hands-on videos, and vacations, and were blown away by its performance as both a versatile still snapper and a powerful video camera. It's important to note that while the C3 does capture 720p video, it can't shoot in 1080p, so you'll need to look elsewhere if you need full HD. Like all mirrorless cameras, there's also no optical viewfinder, nor is there a traditional hot shoe. Instead, Sony included the same propriety connector found on the NEX-3 and NEX-5, enabling connectivity with a dedicated external microphone and a limited variety of external flashes, including the compact strobe that ships in the box. While some photographers may find the NEX-C3 inadequate for their needs, we absolutely loved shooting with it, and we think you will too. Jump past the break to see why.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-nex-c3-review/">Sony NEX-C3 review</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-nex-c3-review/#4305232"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/07/2011-07-20-dsc07756_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-nex-c3-review/#4305233"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/07/2011-07-20-dsc07758_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-nex-c3-review/#4305234"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/07/2011-07-20-dsc07761_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-nex-c3-review/#4305235"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/07/2011-07-20-dsc07763_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-nex-c3-review/#4305236"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/07/2011-07-20-dsc07767_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/07/20/sony-alpha-nex-c3-review/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Sony Alpha NEX-C3 review</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/07/20/sony-alpha-nex-c3-review/">Sony Alpha NEX-C3 review</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 20 Jul 2011 08:00:00 EST. There's no question that <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Canon/">Canon</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Nikon/">Nikon</a> still dominate the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/ilc/">interchangeable lens camera</a> (ILC) market, but with <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/30/olympus-pen-e-p3-pen-e-pl3-and-pen-e-pm1-hands-on/">Olympus</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/29/panasonic-lumix-gf3-sample-photos-and-video/">Panasonic</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/11/sony-nex-c3-hands-on-video/">Sony</a>, and now <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/23/pentax-releases-q-worlds-smallest-interchangeable-lens-digital/">Pentax</a> all launching compact, inexpensive, mirrorless models in recent years, the legacy manufacturers have some catching up to do. In an interview confirming the restoration of pre-quake production levels in Japan, Canon camera division head Masaya Maeda told <em>Reuters</em> that the company is "considering the technical aspects" of creating a mirrorless camera, following up by saying "we will launch an interesting product next year." The comment doesn't exactly make a mirrorless Canon a sure thing, but it's as solid a commitment as we can expect for now.<br />
<br />
One possible concern for Canon is that entry into the new ILC category would cannibalize the company's higher-end point-and-shoot offerings, which likely offer higher margins. But if mirrorless models gain market share over traditional DSLRs and Canon doesn't have its own cam to match, the company could find itself racing to catch up, rather than dominating the ILC category as it has done in the past. Competition from Canon isn't likely to start a price war, since there isn't much elasticity at this point, but it could put pressure on other manufacturers to push the limits with image quality, accessory selection, and perhaps even lead to a future <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/MicroFourThirds/">lens standard</a> -- though we're probably more likely to see a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/23/pentax-releases-q-worlds-smallest-interchangeable-lens-digital/">Pentax Q</a> that can actually capture DSLR-quality images far before manufacturers decide to adopt a universal lens mount.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/07/05/canon-restores-camera-production-in-japan-hints-at-mirrorless-m/">Canon restores camera production in Japan, hints at mirrorless model in 2012</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 05 Jul 2011 11:01:00 EST. Sony announced the successor to its <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/NEX3/">NEX-3</a> digital camera <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/08/sony-announces-nex-c3-and-alpha-a35-cameras-new-macro-lens/">earlier this week</a>, so we decided to take a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/e3+2011">post-E3</a> road trip down to the electronics maker's US headquarters in San Diego to check out the $599 NEX-C3 for ourselves. We'll analyze the new sensor's image quality in a full review before the camera hits stores later this summer, but from our initial impressions, the new cam appears to offer fairly minor tweaks compared to its predecessor. It's incredibly small for a camera with an APS-C sensor -- perhaps even awkwardly so, when paired with the comparatively massive 18-55mm kit lens or Sony's enormous <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-nex-c3-hands-on/#4215321">18-200mm optic</a> -- but not small enough to be any less functional than the previous iteration. Like the NEX-3, the camera was designed to be held by resting the lens on your left palm, rather than by the grip, so size isn't likely to be an issue. Cosmetic changes include a magnesium alloy top panel, front microphone positioning, and a more efficient display hinge, which helped reduce the camera's thickness. We'll be posting a full review in several weeks, but jump past the break for more observations, and a hands-on video from Sony HQ, shot with the NEX-C3.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-nex-c3-hands-on/">Sony NEX-C3 Hands-on</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-nex-c3-hands-on/#4215304"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/06/2011-6-10-img1185_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-nex-c3-hands-on/#4215305"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/06/2011-6-10-img1187_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-nex-c3-hands-on/#4215306"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/06/2011-6-10-img1191_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-nex-c3-hands-on/#4215307"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/06/2011-6-10-img1197_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-nex-c3-hands-on/#4215308"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/06/2011-6-10-img1202_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/11/sony-nex-c3-hands-on-video/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Sony NEX-C3 hands-on (video)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/11/sony-nex-c3-hands-on-video/">Sony NEX-C3 hands-on (video)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Sat, 11 Jun 2011 13:00:00 EST. We've been (impatiently) waiting for Sony to update its NEX line of digital cameras since the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/NEX3/">NEX-3</a> was <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/24/sony-nex-3-discontinued-probably-has-nex-5-to-blame/">discontinued earlier this year</a>, and it looks like a worthy successor has finally been named. Announced today, the NEX-C3 appears identical to the model <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/22/sony-nex-3-successor-nex-c3-alpha-a35-images-leaked/">leaked in April</a>, and uses the same format APS-C image sensor as its predecessor, bumping resolution to 16.2 megapixels in a camera body smaller than the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/NEX5/">NEX-5</a>. Sony says the new entry-level cam is designed to fill the gap between point-and-shoot and DSLR cameras, and is the smallest body to pack an APS-C sensor, offering DSLR-level image quality -- the same 16.2 MP chip is also included in its new full-size Alpha A35, which replaces the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/A33/">A33</a>. Both cameras can shoot at up to 5.5 fps (the A35 adds a 7 fps mode at 8.4 megapixels), and include 3-inch LCDs, with the NEX keeping its hallmark tilt display, and the A35 adding Sony's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/TranslucentMirror/">Translucent Mirror</a> live-view mode, and an electronic viewfinder. We have plenty more to share, including a new lens and flash, along with pricing and availability for all, so jump past the break for the juicy details. <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-nex-c3-and-alpha-a35-gallery/">Sony NEX-C3 and Alpha A35 Gallery</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-nex-c3-and-alpha-a35-gallery/#4188960"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/06/2011-06-08-sonycam9_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-nex-c3-and-alpha-a35-gallery/#4188962"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/06/2011-06-08-sonycam11_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-nex-c3-and-alpha-a35-gallery/#4188961"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/06/2011-06-08-sonycam10_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-nex-c3-and-alpha-a35-gallery/#4188963"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/06/2011-06-08-sonycam12_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-nex-c3-and-alpha-a35-gallery/#4188965"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/06/2011-06-08-sonycam14_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/08/sony-announces-nex-c3-and-alpha-a35-cameras-new-macro-lens/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Sony announces NEX-C3 and Alpha A35 cameras, new macro lens</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/08/sony-announces-nex-c3-and-alpha-a35-cameras-new-macro-lens/">Sony announces NEX-C3 and Alpha A35 cameras, new macro lens</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 08 Jun 2011 00:00:00 EST. Do you feel constrained by the drabness of silver and black cameras? Well its time to let your fashionable freak flag fly, because Sony has announced that it'll now offer its NEX-5 camera in <i>gold</i>. The camera remains otherwise unchanged since its <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/12/sony-alpha-nex-cameras-now-up-for-pre-order-start-at-549/">debut this past summer</a>, and unfortunately the company hasn't released the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/21/sony-reveals-color-variation-concept-models-of-nex-5-and-nex-3/">other colors seen at Photokina</a>, but hey, a little bling is better than none.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/14/sonys-nex-5-now-available-in-gold/">Sony's NEX-5, now available in gold!</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 14 Jan 2011 06:12:00 EST. <div style="text-align: left;">We've already gotten our hands on Lensbaby's basic <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/15/lensbaby-composer-fisheye-and-soft-focus-review-creativity-abo/">Composer lens</a>, but the company has now gone and expanded its bag of tricks even further with its new Composer with Tilt Transformer kit. The key bit there is the Tilt Transformer (also available separately), which can also accommodate any Nikon mount lens and tilt it up to twice the amount of standard <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/tilt-shift">tilt-shift</a> lenses. Have a Panasonic Lumix G Micro System or Olympus PEN Micro Four Thirds camera? Then you can get the kit now for $350 or just the Tilt Transformer for $250 -- Sony NEX camera users will have to wait until October 28th to get in on the act. Full press release is after the break, and our hands-on from the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Photokina/">Photokina</a> show floor is just below. Enjoy. <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/lensbaby-tilt-transformer-kit-for-micro-four-thirds-sony-nex-cameras-hands-on/">Lensbaby Tilt Transformer kit for Micro Four Thirds, Sony NEX cameras hands-on</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/lensbaby-tilt-transformer-kit-for-micro-four-thirds-sony-nex-cameras-hands-on/#3393808"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/09/lensbaby-mft-adapter-photokina-20101568_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/lensbaby-tilt-transformer-kit-for-micro-four-thirds-sony-nex-cameras-hands-on/#3393807"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/09/lensbaby-mft-adapter-photokina-20101569_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/lensbaby-tilt-transformer-kit-for-micro-four-thirds-sony-nex-cameras-hands-on/#3393806"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/09/lensbaby-mft-adapter-photokina-20101571_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/lensbaby-tilt-transformer-kit-for-micro-four-thirds-sony-nex-cameras-hands-on/#3393805"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/09/lensbaby-mft-adapter-photokina-20101572_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/lensbaby-tilt-transformer-kit-for-micro-four-thirds-sony-nex-cameras-hands-on/#3393804"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/09/lensbaby-mft-adapter-photokina-20101573_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div></div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/23/lensbaby-rolls-out-composer-with-tilt-transformer-kit-for-micro/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Lensbaby rolls out Composer with Tilt Transformer kit for Micro Four Thirds, Sony NEX cameras (hands-on)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/23/lensbaby-rolls-out-composer-with-tilt-transformer-kit-for-micro/">Lensbaby rolls out Composer with Tilt Transformer kit for Micro Four Thirds, Sony NEX cameras (hands-on)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 23 Sep 2010 08:23:00 EST. In typical Sony Style, the outfit's booth was comically large at this year's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Photokina/">Photokina</a>. Not that we're complaining or anything, particularly when it's using the show to demonstrate an eight-pack of colorful new mirrorless concepts. Tucked away in the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/NEX/">NEX</a> corner were four <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/07/sonys-nex-3-nex-5-interchangeable-lens-cameras-get-reviewed/">NEX-3</a> and four <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/16/sony-nex-5-preview/">NEX-5</a> cameras, all doused in colors that aren't available anywhere at the moment. We're guessing that Sony's doing its best to beat <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Colorware/">Colorware</a> to the punch here, and a kind booth representative noted that these were simply "ideas" and that the company wasn't yet committed to making any of them. If you're accepting opinions, Sony, the whole red-black-silver thing is getting a bit tired, so why not throw out a few more options for the style-conscious among us? We'll take two -- an orange and a white. Well, that was quick. Right after yesterday's surprising <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/07/14/sony-issues-nex-vg10-first-interchangeable-lens-hd-camcorder/">announcement</a>, Sony flew its yet-to-be-released NEX-VG10 camcorder into London just in time for today's showcase event. Naturally, we had to get our hands on this shiny baby, and boy we were impressed. In case you missed the news, this snazzy device is the world's first consumer HandyCam with interchangeable lens, meaning you can share E-mount lenses with your young <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/nex,sony">NEX DSLRs</a>, or take advantage of the abundant A-mount lenses with the help of an adapter (which will cost you extra, mind you). Likewise, there are also hot and cold shoe mounts on the mic shaft to cater your current camera accessories. Read on for our thoughts on the rest of the camcorder -- we've put together a little sample clip for you at the end as well.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-nex-vg10-hd-camcorder-preview/">Sony NEX-VG10 HD camcorder preview</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-nex-vg10-hd-camcorder-preview/#3177119"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/07/sonynexvg102010-07-15-0_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-nex-vg10-hd-camcorder-preview/#3177120"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/07/sonynexvg102010-07-15-1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-nex-vg10-hd-camcorder-preview/#3177122"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/07/sonynexvg102010-07-15-3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-nex-vg10-hd-camcorder-preview/#3177123"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/07/sonynexvg102010-07-15-4_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-nex-vg10-hd-camcorder-preview/#3177124"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/07/sonynexvg102010-07-15-5_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/07/15/sony-nex-vg10-hd-camcorder-preview/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Sony NEX-VG10 HD camcorder preview</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/07/15/sony-nex-vg10-hd-camcorder-preview/">Sony NEX-VG10 HD camcorder preview</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 15 Jul 2010 20:34:00 EST. <div style="text-align: left;">Sony's new <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/nex-3">NEX-3</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/16/sony-nex-5-preview/">NEX-5</a> cameras may have a few limitations when it comes to their UI, but it looks like they won't be hurting for lens options -- Japan's Rayqual has announced that it'll be offering a series of lens adapters for the cameras starting next month. Those will let you attach any number of Leica, Nikon or Canon lenses to the compact shooter, although you'll expectedly have to make do without autofocus if you decide to venture beyond Sony's own lenses for the cameras. They also won't come cheap, with the adapters set to run &yen;19,950 to &yen;25,200, or roughly $220 to $275 -- although that could be a small price to pay if you've already invested in some serious glass.</div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/18/rayqual-adapters-bring-leica-nikon-and-canon-lenses-to-sonys/">Rayqual adapters bring Leica, Nikon, and Canon lenses to Sony's NEX cameras</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 18 Jun 2010 10:12:00 EST. Sony's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/nex3">NEX-3</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/nex5">NEX-5</a> cameras certainly boast the features to get any camera nerd excited -- interchangeable lenses in a form factor smaller than <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/microfourthirds">Micro Four Thirds</a> but with an image sensor 50% bigger -- but the big question remaining is how they'll actually hold up in use. Unfortunately, according to <em>Digital Photography Review</em> at least, the cameras seem to be a bit of a mixed bag. While the site says that they are unquestionably a "brave and interesting attempt to redefine the camera," it says that they also represent a "distinctly unsteady first step." The biggest problem with them, it seems, is that the much of the high-end capabilities of the cameras are hindered by "one of the strangest interfaces" seen in some time, which the site says is confusing at times and "actively unhelpful" at others. Both cameras are also said to suffer from poor startup and shot-to-shot times, lackluster battery life, and a video mode that offers high quality video but decidedly limited controls. On the upside, the cameras do apparently mostly deliver the goods when it comes to image quality (especially with their high ISO capabilities), and the build quality is said to be solid, particularly on the NEX-5. Talk about envy. One of our lucky tipsters just wrote in to talk about the training he did this week for -- and here's the kicker -- Sony's brand new <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/10/sonys-nex3-5-cameras-priced-june-release-date-leaked/">Alpha NEX-5</a>. Just to prove his conquest, he also managed a picture of the compact DSLR next to the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/05/16/sony-confirms-new-alpha-230-330-and-380-mainstream-dslrs/">Alpha 330</a>. Yep, it's still <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/11/sony-nex-5-is-small-really-really-small-video/">really, really small</a>. If that's not enough, the tipster apparently also will be able to use the SAM and SSM Sony lenses, both with functional autofocus. We know what you're probably thinking: the pre-order details are <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/12/sony-alpha-nex-cameras-now-up-for-pre-order-start-at-549/">right here</a>.<br />

Listen, you've had enough time to think on it -- <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/10/sonys-nex3-5-cameras-priced-june-release-date-leaked/">just over 24 hours</a>, to be less imprecise -- and now it's time to make a monetary decision on Sony's Alpha <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/NEX3/">NEX-3</a> / 5 interchangeable lens cameras. Pre-orders are now being accepted via the online Sony Style store; each camera comes as a kit with either the 16mm lens, or for an extra $50 the 18-55mm. Thus, we're looking at a minimum of $549.99 for the NEX-3 with 16mm, up to a penny under $700 for the NEX-5 with the more versatile eye. Lenses aren't yet sold separately, so make your choice wisely, and while you can gawk at the accessories -- optical viewfinder, A-mount lens adapter, and stereo mic, among others -- they're not yet taking your credit card details for anything but the kit right now. What's that... you <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/11/sony-teases-high-end-camcorder-with-exmore-apc-hd-sensor-and-int/">wanted the camcorder</a>? Keep dreaming, for now.<br />
